5 out of 5 stars Art for Travellers Demystifys Complex Subject.......2006-03-16

I approached this book with some trepidation, since the Renaissance art of Italy is an enormous subject and all but the most intrepid travelers succumb at some point to museum fatigue. However, I was delighted to see that this guide gives very readable background information suitable for people with very little prior exposure to Renaissance art. At the same time it is authoritative and interesting for someone with a deeper knowledge. The fact that the author narrows down the focus to a shorter list of painters and sculptors is very helpful. The illustrations are beautiful. Diagrams of where to find particular works in particular museums, or how to "read" multiple panels in churches can be useful. My only concern is that the book weighs in a bit heavy for a traveler who is packing light. While I would like to have the book with me as a companion while walking through museums, I may have to content myself with notes or (gasp!) cut out pages of particular interest to take with me.

4 out of 5 stars Art for Travellers ; Italy.......2006-02-24

It is a very good guide for the amateur, even more remarkable considering that it was written by Australians.
I am an Italain national myself living in Hawaii for the time being and I know that I will put this guide to good use when I eventually decide to rediscover my own country.
    Highly recommended.

      Book Description

A Traveller's History of Venice offers a concise and readable overview of the history of Venice from the fifth century AD to the present day. The main theme is the unique place that Venice has occupied in the history of Europe in general and in Italy in particular. While Venice has been politically part of united Italy since 1866, its development tied it as much to the Eastern Mediterranean and the Levant as to the Italian peninsula. It is this rich cultural mix that has made Venice such a fascinating, magical place. With a historical gazetteer, chronology of major events, and special reference features on the islands in the lagoon, the history of the gondola, Venice's churches, museums and art galleries, this book is an invaluable companion to students and visitors to this unique city.

      Book Description

Bringing to life Florence's glorious history in first-hand accounts.

Reactions to Venice have been, throughout the ages, astonishingly different. Henry James wrote passionately: "You desire to embrace it, to caress it, to possess it..." whereas Mark Twain found St. Mark's "so ugly...Propped on its long row of thick-legged columns, its back knobbed with domes, it seem like a vast, warty bug taking a medieval walk." In this dazzling anthology, James and Twain along with the writings of Byron, Goethe, Wagner, Casanova, Jan Morris, Robert Browning, and Horace Walpole, among many others, are all featured. Ranging from the days of the sixth century, when the early lagoon-dwellers lived "like sea-birds, in huts built on heaps of osiers" to the exquisite city of eighteenth-century revelers and nineteenth-century art lovers-the city's many different guises are revealed as its inhabitants and visitors saw them.

This favorite volume from the Traveller's Companion series also contains maps, engravings, and notes on history, art and architecture, and everyday city life. Highly entertaining and informative.

      5 out of 5 stars A colorful anthology.......2007-09-26

I bought this anthology in the months prior to a trip to Venice, after reading editor John Julius Norwich's excellent "A History of Venice", to which it makes a terrific companion volume. These first-hand historical accounts present a colorful review of divergent viewpoints on "La Serinissima", from its distant origins in the Dark Ages up through the 20th century.

Though billed as a "traveller's companion", this is not a guide book in any sense of the phrase; rather, it serves to give one a sense of the history and character of the city and its most prominent features through letters, journals, and essays spanning the nearly 1400 years of its existence. Amongst the commentators are humorists like Mark Twain, great eccentrics like Thomas Coryat, litterateurs such as Henry James and aesthetes like John Ruskin -- and their contrasting views create a multifaceted portrait of this unique city, full of surprises and compulsively readable.

For those who want a sense of the hidden history and culture under the dazzling surface of Venice, who want to more deeply appreciate the city and its sights while experiencing them, this collection is highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars This should be required reader for any visitor to Venice!.......2007-03-11

Lord Norwich is a consumate storyteller with an incredible ability to weave various sources of information into a compelling narrative--or in this case, a serious of anecdotes. I can hardly recommend this highly enough. His choices of material are brilliant, his narration masterful, and the overall sense of place perfectly fitted to the Most Serene Republic.

Also not to miss is his A History of Venice and Paradise of Cities: Venice In the 19th Century. The letters written by Euphemia Ruskin inspired several characters in my second novel!

Venice for Pleasure is useful for the traveler or writer, as well, as is Jan Morris' The World of Venice.

      Book Description

A Traveller's History of Italy analyzes the development of the Italian people from pre-historic times right through to the imaginative, resourceful and fiercely independent Italians we know today.

All the major periods of Italian history are dealt with, including the Etruscans, the Romans, the communes and the city states which spawned the glories of the Renaissance, right up to modern times.

For travellers on the ground or students at their desks, this handy paperback will prove invaluable.

2 out of 5 stars Misnomer - nothing here for the "traveller".......2007-04-14

If this book had been called "A brief history of Italy", I'd have given it four stars. As a short but reasonably thorough overview of Italian history, it does a pretty good job.

But as for being a "traveller's history"...it fails. I was planning a trip to Italy and wanted a book that would tell me the history behind the things I was seeing ("And on your left, you see a statue from the early 16th century..."). As such, this book is useless. Its historical content is in no way geared towards the traveler.

If you want a quick read on Italian history, great. But don't take it on your travels.

3 out of 5 stars Good background for those who know nothing about Italian His.......2000-09-15

It's a lot of information to absorb, but overview of the development of modern Italy is interesting. As someone who knew little of the history of Italy, the book enriched my travel experiences in Italy. The timelines are a good reference. There could be better maps for those of us who are unfamiliar with Italian geography. Unfortunately, the book is poorly bound and my copy fell apart almost immediately.

There are times and places that come back yet again, but that, when the brooding tourist puts out his hand to them, meet it a little slowly, or even seem to recede a step, as if in slight fear of some liberty he may take. Surely they should know by this time that he is capable of taking none. He has his own way--he makes it all right. It now becomes just a part of the charming solicitation that it presents precisely a problem--that of giving the particular thing as much as possible without at the same time giving it, as we say, away.

The chapters of which this volume is composed have with few exceptions already been collected, and were then associated with others commemorative of other impressions of (no very extensive) excursions and wanderings. The notes on various visits to Italy are here for the first time exclusively placed together, and as they largely refer to quite other days than these - the date affixed to each paper sufficiently indicating this - I have introduced a few passages that speak for a later and in some cases a frequently repeated vision of the places and scenes in question.

                5 out of 5 stars Book with a view..........2000-05-09

The films 'Room With a View' and 'Wings of the Dove' make one wonder about the Italy reflected in classical paintings executed before the destruction of WWII. My curiousity was heightened in an art history class when the instructor showed a photo slide of the Ponte Vecchio and told the amazing story of the Nazi pilot who disobeyed orders to destroy the last bridge the allies could cross on their advance north.

This beautiful book brings to mind the saying, "The Past is a Foreign Country." Italy of the 19th Century is a place none of us can know except through records left by one who witnessed it. The book consists of essays James wrote on his travels to various places in Italy including Venice, Rome, and Florence. He visited some places several times and the text reflects the changes he observed on revisits.

He records an Italy whose poverty for a time prevented the intrusion of developers, who later made many changes perhaps for the worse. James was not a worshipper of old buildings, he appreciated them, but he was also aware of the suffering of the Italians, many of whom existed in dire poverty. His reflections on various cathedrals, churches and other objects of artistic interest are humanized by his comments about the individuals he encounters. He muses on the morality of travel, "whether it has been worthwhile to leave his home [and] encounter new forms of human suffering." His awareness of the Italians themselves makes his writing a bit like that of Paul Theroux, a travler and writer in our times. James differs from Theroux however. My sense is that James is a little less likely to criticize and a little more willing to overlook unpleasantness. Perhaps that makes him less of a realist, or perhaps Italy was a more pleasant place in the 19th Century.

5 out of 5 stars Good comprehensive book.......2001-04-11

I would have given full praises for this excellent writing. It did help me to understand better the subjects in my degree courses. The explainations are clear and direct with interesting colourful examples. 'Feature story' on the start of each chapter section give an insight for real world examples and 'Accounting in action' do explore the critical thinking on the issue. 'Review It' and 'Do It' sections help the students to test their understanding before reading on further. Exercises and cases at the end of each chapter will enhance students' learning and knowledge abilities. My lecturer highly recommends this book since it is comprehensive and the illustrations give better pictures about the whole chapter. Since this book also includes theoretical aspect of accounting, it is excellent as a basic for students who would like to learn the accounting principles.

1 out of 5 stars Accouting Principles-too much text and not enough examples.......1999-08-17

This is a 27 chapter 1200+ page textbook. The main problem with this book is that there are plenty of questions at the end of each chapter, but there is no way to check your answers. There isn't even a book to buy in addition to this one that allows the answers to be reviewed. This in my opinion makes this a HORRIBLE text to learn from.

4 out of 5 stars Good Textbook but too many errors for a 5th edition.......1999-08-16

This Textbook is a good teaching book, if the instructor isalso good. The drawback of this book is it overcomplicates severalareas and has the chapters set up in a bad order. The the biggest thing wrong with this book is it has several errors in the book and even more in the working papers. The book does however make a good introduction of accounting and covers the subject well.

5 out of 5 stars This book really helps students learn accounting........1998-06-12

The authors of this book take a lot of care in anticipating where students will have trouble understanding the accounting concepts. They use many examples and worked out problems as well as real companies which can help you see what is happening in the real world of accounting. The book is full of pictures, illustrations and lots of color.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK FOR LEARNING GAAP FUNDAMENTALS.......1997-02-12

This book gives clear insite to the accounting cycle. Clear illustrations of accounting procedures make this the book helpfull to students developing accounting skills. I would recomend that all accounting proffesors to consider Kieso's boo
