4 out of 5 stars This book doesnt do much more than intended.......2007-07-05

In Romania hiking is somewhat hard for foreigners outside of the more populated areas due to the lack of signage as well as a lack of availability in directions in hiking from some sources in parts of the country. The book will tell you enough information if you want to go to main tourist hiking destinations and use forest/walker trails as well as some maps on finding your way around while trying not to get lost. While it is not quite high quality, think more of the late 80's early 90's street maps it will get you where you need to go in the designated areas. Some of the most scenic views are slightly off the beaten path and require distancing yourself from this book. Romania's mountains are beautifull and worth the hike this will tell you a little about what you can see and hopefully make you decide positively on your preplanned adventure. It is always a good idea however when hiking in Romania to know your surroundings as well as having someone who is Romanian with you so that you may explore more and have a more enjoyable time.

5 out of 5 stars Much practical info.......2005-09-25

Just came back from a few days hiking in the Piatra Craiului in Romania. Unfortunately I had three days of non-stop rain so I wasn't able to do any of the hikes from the guide that are on top of the ridge of the mountain. Instead I walked a few routes below the tree line. I did find the general info in the book very useful. It tells you about train travel, accomodation, mountain huts (cabanas), equipment, flora and fauna, useful words and phrases and useful addresses. Besides this guide I would also bring a detailed map of the area where you're hiking. The maps in the guide are too small and lack detail in case you want to trot outside the marked routes.

          Book Description

This volume contains the most relevant peer-reviewed papers presented at The First International Workshop on Vrancea Earthquakes, held in Bucharest on November 1-4, 1997. Strong earthquakes in the Romanian Vrancea area have caused a high toll of casualties and extensive damage over the last several centuries. With a moment magnitude of 7.4, the 1977 earthquake caused more than 1500 casualties, the majority of them in Bucharest. The contributions address key problems of seismotectonics of the Vrancea area and related strong ground motion, hazard assessment, site effects and microzonation, structural damage and earthquake resistant design, risk assessment and disaster management from an international and regional perspective. This list of topics shows the diverse contributions from the multidisciplinary fields of geosciences, geophysics, seismology, geology, civil engineering, city planning, and emergency relief practices. This book is of value for scientists interested in earthquake hazard and seismic risk research as well as for seismologists, geophysicists and Earth scientists. It is also useful for authorities responsible for public safety and natural hazard mitigation plans and for insurance companies.

              Description:
In the Retezat Mountains concentrations of O"3, NO"2 and SO"2 in summer season 2000-2002 were low and below toxicity levels for forest trees. While NH"3 concentrations were low in 2000, the 2001 and 2002 concentrations were elevated indicating possibility for increased N deposition to forest stands. More than 90% of the rain events were acidic with pH values <5.5, contributing to increased acidity of soils. Crown condition of Norway spruce (Picea abies) and European beech (Fagus sylvatica) was good, however, defoliation described as >25% of foliage injured increased from 9.1% in 2000 to 16.1% in 2002. Drought that occurred in the southern Carpathians between fall 2000 and summer 2002 and frequent acidic rainfalls could cause the observed decline of forest condition. Both Norway spruce and European beech with higher defoliation had lower annual radial increments compared to the trees with low defoliation. Ambient O"3 levels found in the Retezat did not affect crown condition of Norway spruce or European beech.

                        Book Description

This book surveys and summarizes the numerous approaches used to extract information on market expectations from option prices. The various approaches are thoroughly explained and many practical issues are discussed, including: data selection, data preparation, and presentation and interpretation of results. This enables the reader to easily implement these techniques in his own applied work.
Most studies concerning uncertainty in financial markets focus on actual uncertainty as represented by historical volatility measures, variances etc. In contrast, using option prices allows us to study uncertainty in expectations, i.e. to take a forward looking perspective. In some applications we study how ECB-council meetings affect uncertainty in money market expectations. Most interesting among our results is a number of event studies which compare how uncertainty in market participants’ expectations reacts to anticipated and unanticipated results of ECB-council meetings.

Overall, I found the book pricey given the quality... The layout is also not as user friendly as other textbooks in the field. For every topic it does give an example, but does not always clearly outline the steps obtained to achieve the displayed solution. Not to mention the fact that there is almost one error in every larger example.

                          Book Description

Public accountants are being attacked from all sides. Stock and bond holders, the United States Congress, the Securities and Exchange Commission, clients, and even members of the profession itself, all accuse accountants of failing in their watchdog duties as auditors and of approving financial statements that follow questionable accounting rules. Academic as well as other critics fault the profession for failing to innovate, particularly in respect to accounting for the effects of inflation. The attacks often take the form of litigation that has resulted in the payment of hundreds of millions of dollars in damages by firms and their liability insurers. This situation is not unique to the United States. Similar attacks can be observed in Canada, the United Kingdom, and other countries. Indeed, the viability of the external audit is today in question, as public accountants increasingly seek to avoid potentially ruinous engagements and diversify into other activities. Drawing on his long and extensive experience as both practitioner and academic, the author traces the history of accounting and auditing, analyzing the factors---domestic and international---that have led to the contemporary problems of the profession. He prescribes measures that can and should be taken in order to restore public accounting to its former status and esteem. He proposes major changes in federal and state legislation, the current system of accountancy education and training, accounting and auditing standard setting, and existing models of historical financial reporting. In addition, he presents a blueprint for a new type of financial report designed to improve the utility of financial statements for investment decisions.

                              Book Description

In a world of spiralling inflation and unemployment, three dozen eminent economists from America, Europe, and Japan, exchange views on the performance and future prospects of the present international monetary system of managed floating exchange rates. The contributors, from academic, banking, and official circles, reflect a wide range of viewpoints on the problems of restoring global monetary order.

'...the book is a welcome addition to the debate on international money.' -- International Journal of Development Banking, Vol 2 No 1, January 1984
