Two for the price of one.......2007-09-17
So they say you want a guide published recently and that makes this product just a little out of date, but it's a good guide.
Since it isn't the latest, newest thing it rang my chimes as the cheapest thing for a summer trip in 2007. Backpacking and trying to pack light I cut out the sections of the book I wanted. (Which works when you are essentially paying for the shipping.)
Budapest especially is going through some massive changes so if you want up to the minute buy something new. (The upcoming change to the Euro comes to mind.) It's a beautiful city, but beware, outside the tourist zones or say the mall or near the universities nobody really speaks English or German either.
Prague is, well, it's Prague. Who needs a guidebook anyway, just follow the masses and pay to enter everything. Wrong. There are some less-traveled gems in Prague and this book lists some of them. Not a bad buy at all.
Virtually 5 Star.......2001-05-20
This a very nice and comprehensive travel guide. I have no doubts of takeing it to my trip. The only BIG MISS in it, is that thera are no www pages or e-mail references for hotels, restaurants, museums, guideing services etc. etc.

Book Description
Now fully redesigned, this new edition of Cadogan’s unique three-city guide contains the most up-to-the-minute practical information and listings, along with color photographs and maps. Vienna, Prague and Budapest are growing in popularity as city break destinations thanks to their beautiful city centers and increasing number of trendy restaurants and hotels. Prague offers the ultimate romantic getaway with its stunning medieval Old Town, cobbled streets, gothic churches and magnificent castle, the largest ancient castle in the world. The center of Vienna is UNESCO-listed and is a cultural paradise, featuring several excellent museums, the stately Imperial Palace that once served as the residence to the powerful Hapsburg dynasty, and Sigmund Freud’s house. Meanwhile Budapest, a veritable fountain of medicinal waters, is home to dozens of swimming pools and bathing halls dating back to the Turkish Occupation and a wonderful place to relax in a spa after all that sight-seeing and shopping.
Customer Reviews:
A nicely succinct guide........2007-10-17
We used this guide for just Budapest and Prague, not Vienna. It was usefully succinct in its description of the importance of the sights it reviewed. Also, it helped those having a limited amount of time to identify the "must see" sights and gave a quick introduction to the money, culture, etc., of the country involved. The only reason it's not 5 stars is that it failed to lay out walking routes to hit the sights it mentions, something that would have been even more useful.
Complete.......2007-09-20
Is a complete book of information, not only basics, is really a guide to visit this 3 destinations. I recommend it.
Excellent Guide.......2007-06-12
We planned to visit these never before seen cities on a recent tour. We looked in libraries and bookstores for guides to them and found this one which had all the information we needed and more for our tour, and we would certainly look at these author's tour guides in the future for other destinations.

Customer Reviews:
Best travel guide ever.......2002-01-29
I also spent just 6 days visiting the city. I bought this guide after I arrived in Prague and it remains as one of my most cherished books. Incredibly witty, humorous, well-informed and useful. And so dead-on, it sometimes felt as if I was being teased (i.e. Mr Kadri describes a certain club as prone to "shoulder-brushing encounters"; I get there with my friends, go up to the bar to order and... someone's brushing his arm against mine! Seemed like a joke). Also, it made the most out of Prague's odd history and legends.
It's too bad it hasn't been updated, but even if you travel now to Prague, I'd still recommend it for the descriptions. You can get up-to-date phone numbers in other guides, but what Mr Kadri offers I've never seen.
By the way, who's this guy? I haven't seen any other guides by him.
Excellent, witty guide to understanding Prague.......2001-08-09
I read several other travel guides to Prague while planning my trip, but I used this one exclusively when wandering through the city because of its excellent and humorous commentary. Using this guide is like having a chatty, witty, and knowledgable guide who shows you the real Prague, not the tourist Prague. Not only does this guide contain pratical details such as using the transportation system, getting to the city from the airport, weather information, travel advice, places to find helpful info, etc., it contains an accessible and enjoyable overview of the history of Prague, excellent and well planned walks through the city (complete with detailed and witty commentary), restaurant and hotel recommendations, and a few necessary (and not so necessary) phrases in Czech. Also included is a chapter on moving to Prague as nearly everyone who goes there ends up wanting to live there. Unfortunately, due to new immigration laws the process of obtaining a residential visa is a long and exasperating process.
The walks (maps and directions included) themselves are wonderful as they lead you through different sections of the city at a pace that allows you to really enjoy and deeply experience many aspects of this complex city.
The only drawback to this otherwise excellent guide is that it sorely needs an update or a new edition. Many of the phone numbers are wrong as the phone system undergoes frequent changes. Several of the businesses have closed or moved elsewhere. Other then that, this city guide stands above those that are ladened with only facts and impersonal descriptions.
Brings the city alive.......2000-01-21
This is one of the best city guide books I have ever used. Particularly good is the very detailed and enjoyable walks which bring the city alive, and the quirky history and cultural sections. Prague has such a strange and bohemian history it takes an unusual and observant writer to capture it in the written word. This book does it. Also worth noting is the Prague day trips. Visit all the towns the author mentions, they are fantastic.
The finest travel book I've ever used.......1999-08-24
As a relatively experienced traveler who had never been to Prague before, I wanted to make sure I covered all the bases and bought a series of travel guides: Rough Guide, Eyewitness, Let's Go, Fodor's, etc., and studied them all so that my brief (6 day) visit would be as broad and deep as possible. A friend lent me the first edition of the Cadogan Guide and I quickly ordered the 3rd edition. It arrived just before my departure. It is far and away the finest guide I have ever encountered. All of the other guides moved to the bottom of my suitcase back at the pension, and I conquered Prague, Cadogan in hand. Wry, insightful, fact-laden, and witty, I occasionally found myself laughing out loud in the street. The restaurant, bar, and store recommendations were spot on, and led laterally to other adventures. The walking tours were exceptionally well done. I am never travelling without a Cadogan guide again.
A must for anyone who takes a sense of humor with them.......1999-03-19
This was my main guide book when I lived in Prague for several months. The hotel and restaurant reviews are good, but buy it for the commentary and walking tours. Some of the details, secrets, and tricks that he knows are nothing short of amazing. Particularly noteworthy are the tours of museums, which proved invaluable when attempting to make sense of the odd museums in Prague.

Book Description
Lincoln on God and Country uses the 16th president's own words to demonstrate why he deserves to be called a man of faith, a friend of the slave, and a gaurdian of democratic goverment. The casual reader of history will find the book useful because it merges a short biography of Lincoln with his greatest writing and brief editorial comment.
Customer Reviews:
Words for the ages.......2000-11-27
We live in troubled times. The presidential candidate of one political p[arty is ridiculed for stating that Jesus is his favorite philosopher, and the vice-presidential candidate of the other political party is castigated for speaking about religion. What has happened to the moral tone of this country, which was founded by God-fearing men? Have we completely abandoned the idea that there is a Being who guides and guards us in all that we do? Abraham Lincoln, arguably our greatest president, believed that there was Someone watching over us at all times. He also believed vehemently that our governmental system was important, and that its structure was the best that could have been devised for the country. His words are eloquent, and call to us across the gap of 150 years. Reading this work, it is easy to restore some confidence in our governmental system, even though now it is being sorely tested by the eletoral events in Florida. This work could not have come along at a better time in our history, and it is well worth reading.

Book Description
The remarkable journey of Siamese twins from slavery to the courts of Europe
Born into slavery, joined at the lower spine, stolen from her parents in infancy, exhibited as a curiosity in North America and Europe, stripped naked and examined in every new town, freed from bondage on numerous occasions yet returned to her former circumstances nonetheless, Millie-Christine McKoy lived one of the most complex and difficult childhoods imaginable.
Even more remarkable is the way she turned out. Reunited with her family and brought under caring management, Millie-Christine became one of the most renowned performers of her day. While most African Americans were kept ignorant in slavery and destitute after the Civil War, she grew fluent in five languages and was an accomplished pianist, singer, and, yes, dancer who toured the world and entertained kings and queens.
Loved by most yet ridiculed as a monster by some, Millie-Christine was one of the most amazing people you've never heard of. Her story, told here in full for the first time, has the flavor of the side-show world in which she traveled-a world of giants, midgets, human skeletons, and bearded ladies, freaks with very human souls.
Customer Reviews:
Recommended!.......2002-09-01
I'm so glad that this book was written! I read another book years ago about the freak show circuit in which that author dismissed Millie-Christine as an obscure act about which very little was known. Wrong!
Joanne Martel has found a rich trove of information about the conjoined twins, and she presents it in an interesting way. Photographs show the twins at different stages of their development. There are exerpts from newspaper accounts, handbills from their performances, family letters, etc. This author really did her homework to produce this solid work.
While exhibiting "human oddities" is distasteful to us today, this book shows how Millie-Christine's life was not entirely horrific. The twins led a dignified life in the show business world. Born as slaves in 1851, they were lifted up from that life and were educated and taught to perform pretty songs and light amusements for the benefit of their audience. They were adept in social chatter, and were able to converse with adults and children in all walks of life. They traveled through Europe at an early age and met famous people and nobility.
They were able to contribute to their family's support immediately after th Civil War, when the entire family found themselves free. Without the income provided by his twins, their father would not have been able to buy his parcels of land in North Carolina.
Their specialness did cause unfortunate events in their lives. When young children, they were removed from their mother's care and sold to a showman who later lost custody. They passed through several hands, and ended up the wards of a kind and generous man who cared for them and their entire family.
The constant prodding and poking of physicians, especially trying to the young girls as they approached womanhood, was a source of sorrow and embarassment.
This is a good, readable account of two girls born into an interesting situation during interesting times. Recommended!
Pretty good-informative without being dry........2001-12-01
I really enjoyed learning about another set of conjoined twins. I felt the author told a story and didn't just rehash facts.
Thanks.
"As God Decreed, We Agreed"--two hearts, one amazing life.......2001-08-12
Millie-Christine is a fascinating story. She/they managed to have a happy life, full of love and faith, despite their condition. They come across MUCH more sympathetically than do Chang and Eng in the recent novel about those Siamese twin brothers. Chang and Eng's degree of conjoinment was considerably less serious than Millie-Christine's, yet the Siamese Twins led a much more unhappy and depressing life, constantly bickering with each other. Millie-Christine chose to live by the philosophy "As God Decreed, We Agreed". They seemed to really love each other, and nearly everybody around them seemed to love them. They didn't let prejudice, slavery, or the ridicule of others get them down--they chose to cherish the unique advantages of their situation (what black girls in the 19th century would EVER have gotten to meet Queen Victoria)? They come across as truly inspirational.
I give this book 4 stars because the writing, although the research is commendable, doesn't quite "grab" you, doesn't seem to really bring out their personalities or to tell enough about Millie-Christine as people, especially as children. The first part is a bit confusing--too many people kidnap Millie-Christine, the girls are being tossed around like a hot potato and it's hard to figure out who's got them, or who should have them! But of course that really did happen to slaves and "freaks of nature" in those days. The use of both singular and plural ("she" and "they") for the girl(s) is also a bit jarring, although it is explained clearly at the beginning why this is done. I wish there had been more elaboration of their thoughts and feelings--but probably that kind of stuff just didn't really get recorded beyond the innocent songs/poems and sanitized mini-biography which they wrote for their show. More from their letters and family memoirs would be interesting.
All in all, though, a well researched portrait of one (or two, if you prefer, as I do) amazing, intelligent, and lovely and loving lady/ies.
Fascinating True Tale.......2001-01-22
This amazing, fascinating true tale deserves more attention than it has gotten from the press and review sources. Author Joanne Martel does a terrific job of not only telling Millie-Christine's story, but also of detailing the world she lived in.
Much more interesting than the original Siamese twings Chang and Eng, her life crossed theirs and they even exhibited together for a time. Why their story survived in popular culture and hers is largely lost is a mystery. This is a remarkable story.
A truly fascinating biography of Siamese twins........2000-03-03
Millie-Christine deserves ongoing recommendation, providing the remarkable story of Siamese twins who were born into slavery in 1851 and who moved from slavery to the courts of Europe during their lives. Twice sold and kidnapped as a child, Millie-Christine traveled throughout Europe and earned a fortune.
