A book for the midwest home owner........2004-02-08
This is a book for creating a good looking yard that does not take all of your time working on it, so you spend more time looking at & enjoying the results.
Provides you the information required, to decide if a plant will grow successfully in the habitat you are trying to establish. Gives you the need to know requirements of the plant and what will make it happy and flourish.
I live in Iowa and this book is about plants that we can grow Iowa. The TV shows and many other books are always showing Zone seven plant material. That is called an annual in Iowa.
Great book for anyone planting in the midwest region. The price makes it a true value for the home owner. This is not a "coffee table" book this is an owner's manual.
I didn't like it........2003-08-27
No color pictures, it has black/white "drawn" pictures, but the information about each plant has a lot of detail.
Very detailed and informative-no pictures.......2002-02-05
I have found this book indispensable since moving from the west coast to Iowa. My only criticism is that there are no pictures, just sketches, which makes it difficult to put together what you have read with what you have seen. I recently bought a small hand size plant encyclopedia to accompany it and I find it makes things much easier. It is a good read and works well for quick reference, too.
Getting ready for spring!.......2000-12-18
I loved the Duggan book and now use it to plan for spring plantings. I turned an ugly yard into a beautiful garden and haven for my family and friends using the helpful, down-to-earth advice contained in the book. Whenever I think about gardening, I always check Laara's book first to find her advice about planting in shade,or in full sun, for color choices or for hardiness. I take her book with me everywhere in a plastic bag so thatI have it while on plant shopping trips, out to the nursery and out to the garden. I bought copies for my friends, too.
Outstanding........1998-09-21
A great book. It tought me how to grow great vegetables with minimal fuss, while making a great looking garden.
Book Description
Ezra Haggard, author of the popular Perennials for the Lower Midwest (1996), literally takes landscape design to a higher level with this gorgeous book especially for Midwesterners. Trees and shrubs add mass and the all-important vertical element to a garden. If well chosen, they also contribute beauty, texture, and color all year long and for years to come, beautifying the home and adding to its value, screening out unattractive elements, providing privacy, and getting better as they get older.
Customer Reviews:
Tried & True.......2007-05-02
What I so enjoyed about this book was the very hands on, forthcoming approach the author has in dealing with his subject. He very much encourages the reader in a way that gives you the feeling you are in his garden with him.
No the book doesn't cover a million plants by any means...but those it does discuss provide intersting, precise & tried & true information.
I refer to this book often for inspiration..& sometimes just the pleasure of gleaning insight from another gardeners life experience with all these plants & their quirks etc.
Highly recommend this for any novice or veteran gardener in the Midwest!
More good reference from Ezra Haggard.......2003-03-13
This book is in the same good-looking and useful format as Haggard's first book on perennials. Each plant, tree or shrub has its own page of description, with a picture on the facing page. It's a personal book - these are the plants that over the years (and you can see how many by comparing the author picture on this book with his earlier one) Haggard has discovered really work. If you are making decisions about design, and know nothing about trees, this is very useful. It not only gives some interesting alternatives to the old standbys, it also contains good information on light, water, soil, and ultimate size (which can be critical for shrubs or trees). I've used his advice over and over, and he has never steered me wrong. I met him a while back when he gave a beautiful slide show (he does his own photography) and I was a novice. He was down to earth (so to speak), and equally kind to me as to the local gardening bigwigs.

Great Info.......2006-01-17
This book has great information on all the native plants of the Upper Midwest. I found it very entertaining and educational. The only thing I would change about the book is to add color pictures. The drawings are pretty good though.
Wildflowers.......2001-12-24
pretty good, but could be better with photos instead of drawings

Book Description
If ordering chicken chow mein from the corner Chinese takeout is not your idea of an adventurous ethnic dining experience, why not go the source? Hop on the subway or catch a cab to any of New York's twenty incredible ethnic neighborhoods and then let Eleanor Berman lead the way.
An award-winning travel writer and longtime New Yorker, Berman takes you on safe and fun walking tours through the world of food and culture that awaits in New York City's boroughs. You'll sample authentic Korean and Senegalese dishes plus 15 other ethnic cuisines; navigate like a native through Asian markets and Mediterranean groceries; learn the language of dim sum; shop in exotic emporiums; and visit intriguing historical sites.
From Little Italy to Little Odessa, find these and other hidden treasures: Astoria, the world's largest Greek enclave outside Greece, where you can stock up on delicious cheeses, sample charcoal-grilled seafood, and eat baklava to die for; and a corner of the East Village, where there's a tiny shop filled with crafts from the Ukraine and a delightful little Ukrainian museum; Arthur Avenue, where you'll find heavenly handmade pasta and the world famous Bronx Zoo; Greenpoint in Brooklyn, where you'll find borscht, pirogies, and other Polish pleasures.
Berman's helpful descriptions of the various cuisine, tips on what to order, specific directions and fantastic maps are other handy features of this unique guide.

Fair is fair.......2003-09-11
It is only fair to mention that Myra Sara Alperson is the author of a competitive title.
New York Neighborhoods: A Food Lover's Walking, Eating and S.......2002-07-26
There are many wonderful things about this book: the maps are beautifully designed and easy to read; the drawings are lovely and truly capture the spirit of the neighborhoods; and the food glossary is very good. But the content vastly oversimplifies the neighborhoods - and thus shortchanges the reader - and in some cases the suggested walking routes seem dubious. Since I also write about food and have led bicycle and walking tours in the neighborhoods since 1983, I am perhaps hypercritical about this type of information, but I feel that readers are entitled to accuracy and, for those intrepid enough to do the tours the author lays out, the best possible experience. Frankly, I had to wonder how thoroughly the author actually cased out the areas she wrote about; she often writes as if she is in a huge hurry! In some instances, she lists a few food items you'll find in a restaurant or market, but I was curious about whether she'd actually tried the items she mentioned! (No, it's not necessary to try everything - but it would be nice to have some anecdotes about the eating experience.) Her portrayal of Astoria, Queens, as a Greek neighborhood overlooks the fact that Astoria is much more ethnically complex (including south Asian, Eastern European and Latin American), and has several blocks of Egyptian cafes and markets - unique in NYC. Her recommended walking tour of Harlem includes two blocks of 124th Street - an ugly stretch in an otherwise landmarked area - and some wrong information, i.e. Apollo Theater is incorrectly marked. I don't know how much editorial oversight the author had on the maps, but these errors are misleading. Books like these are hard to do well - information changes even as the books are being written and are in production. But misinformation or inadequate information reflects less than thorough research.
Book Description
Also available for students of the markets, an interactive software and workbook toolkit filled with exercises for solving option pricing problems. The software (Windows and Mac compatible) contains all of the pricing models in Black-Scholes and Beyond and is programmed to allow ``numerical experimentation'' with the models. These detailed exercises will guide the reader through the ins and outs of options pricing and can be used with the diskette and/or calculator.

Not a good stand alone without Chriss' book.......1999-02-16
Not a good book unless you also have Chriss's book of the same title - too many references to it. Software is interesting.
