4 out of 5 stars Easiest Grammar Lesson in the World.......2007-07-11

When you learned your native language, what was the most effective grammar lesson? For most people, it had nothing to do with memorizing rules, reading grammar texts, and surviving grammar lectures. You learn the most grammar by repeatedly HEARING grammatically correct sentences. By the time you were old enough to read, you already instinctively understood most of the grammar rules you would now be taught in school.

That is why the Pimsleur method is the cornerstone of my Russian study program. Memorizing a grammar book is not my idea of a fun Saturday. However, listening to these Russians and being taught how to construct grammatically correct sentences without memorizing the rules is a fantastic way to begin learning a languange.

In addition, these CD's will train your ear to comprehend Russian words and accents. No book can train you in this way. To properly and thoroughly learn a language, you need to verbalize it, visualize it, and hear it. Pimsleur's CD's and booklet will give you the fundamentals to do all three from day one, and will continue to develop your skills to a respectable level.

My Listmania contains all the resources I have used or are currently using to learn Russian. There are several valuable resources out there. I believe Pimsleur is the most valuable, and it remains the guiding force of my Russian program.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Way to Start Learning.......2007-03-28

Pimsleur courses are the best way to start learning a language because they teach you useful stuff from the beginning, thus keeping you motivated to learn more. Sure, they are not enough to achieve real fluency, but neither is a grammar book without audio, especially when it comes to Russian, which is a rather difficult language to pronounce correctly. Besides, unless you are exceptionally self-disciplined, learning just from a textbook is very boring, in fact too boring for most, which means you will quit altogether. As to the price, I will only say it need not necessarily be expensive.

As to the suggestion made by someone that renting subtitled movies is a better choice than a good audio course, I must say that is the worst language-learning advice that has ever grated my ears. As someone who understands several foreign languages (French, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish), I can tell you that subtitles rarely correspond exactly to the actual dialogue, but are instead abbreviated versions of it, usually also cleansed of profanity, etc. Besides, when you hear a whole sentence in an unfamiliar language, it's impossible to make heads or tails of it: you can't tell what is a verb, a noun, etc. Neither will you realize it when a speaker uses non-standard pronunciation or grammar because of a lack of education or regional accent. And you won't even hear the phonemes (sounds) of the language correctly unless you first get your ears used to them, and it's much easier to do that through a specially designed medium, such as a Pimsleur course, than through material designed for native (or at least fluent) speakers, such as a movie.

Bottomline: you need an audio course to properly learn a foreign language and Pimsleur is the best. Get it!

1 out of 5 stars Order a good cd holder case as you order this set........2007-02-20

This is my third Pimisleur language. Great program. But cd case now has
a problem. The cd case for the 30 lesson editions were designed for the
user guide booklet and reading booklet to hold the cds in place. (My
earlier purchased language sets with this arrangement work great and do
not have a problem.) The publisher has changed the guide booklet to a
fold out. With this simple change they created a major problem for
protecting the cds. Now the first half of the cds will not stay in place. The
second half of the cds was designed to use clear plastic stays. They
work great. The first half of the cds will NOT stay in place and do fall
out. The act of carrying the case across the room will have the cds
sliding inside the case. Great care must be used opening the case or the
cds roll across the floor. Pimsleur will replace a damaged cd. The
plastic stay will not work on the front half of the set, only the back half.
They have no solution for the disks falling out. They suggested I buy a
cd case and move my cds into that case. My suggestion to them is they
fix the problem. I paid for a set that now has improper working storing
case.

5 star spoken language program. 1 star for case problem.

Any suggestion on how to hold the cds in the publisher's case is
welcome.

4 out of 5 stars Great way to learn a 6th language.......2006-07-01

I already speak English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and have studied Latin. I bought a Berlitz book some years back and tried to use it to study Russian but soon gave up. It was a good thing, too. The Pimsleur course taught me that the Berlitz book was teaching the WRONG PRONUNCIATION for at least half the words.

After 4 days with the Quick and Simple set of CDs, I was able to invite a Russian girl to go to a hotel with me. And she said I spoke Russian quite well. That was after 4 days with the Pimsleur course! I ran out and bought the 30 lesson course. Of course!

But I do have a few questions. Why in the Quick and Simple course do they pronounce "wine" as "vinnAH" and in the Russian I course do they pronounce it as "vinnOH"? In the Q&S they say "wee-pit" for drink, and in the Russian I they just say "pit". Why?

Seriously, y'all quit arguing over whether Pimsleur has a better linguistic theory, and just get the CDs and start listening to them. I did it in the car, and it works fine. Pretty soon you are answering the questions all by yourself and shocked at how fast you are learning. Buy a Russian dictionary so you can look up some of the words that may be hard to hear well because they have too many soft consonants, such as the word for "beer".

Then, after you have gone through all those lessons, you can tackle a heavier-duty study of grammar and vocabulary. But meanwhile, you can make Russian girls giggle and maybe even go out with you.

1 out of 5 stars Please Read a Negative Review!.......2006-06-06

I sure hope you've finished reading the positive reviews, and will now come to this review, and see the other side.

This CD set is garbage. It reminds me of the Diet Pill commercials on late night TV, where they say, who spends $200 on a diet pill? Someone who really needs to lose weight, and needs a pill that is effective.

Only the pill they are selling over the counter, is just some herbs you could get at the local health food store for $5.

People spend a lot, to show how much they really want to learn, and they really badly want a 'best' solution to be out there.

But Pimsleur didn't invent listening and repeating and you don't need these CD's to listen and repeat. You can go buy some Russian movies, with subtitles, and watch the movie. Hit pause every once in a while and repeat. Use Russian subtitles to read along with the speaker. You did learn Cyrillic right? If you didn't...you'll have to, YOU HAVE TO, if you want to learn Russian.

So get a book, read and listen every day, and don't spend this amount of money.

I went through this Pimsleur method, I wasted a lot of money to pick up a few words. The fact is you need thousands of words to speak in Russian, probably about 15 - 25, 000 words. At the rate Pimsleur teaches you words, you'll go broke.

Movies, on the other hand...can be as cheap as $10 each, and each of them has about 1,000 lines of separate dialogue... $10 buys you way more than you get in all 3 Pimsleur Courses.

What makes me so angry about Pimsleur, Rosetta Stone, and the others, is they sell you on a dream. You spend the money, because you would gladly spend $500 to acquire Russian.

But repeat after this, you won't learn Russian with this course. You won't learn it. You won't know it. You won't even be close. So congratulate yourself all you want...but at level III Pimsleur you are still a complete novice, who cannot hold a conversation that will last even a minute. Go listen to Crocodile Gena's Song...(the Russian happy birthday)...you won't even understand the simplest of Birthday songs.

So...In short, save your money. Buy the grammar books, and start immersing yourself in Russian. Don't bother with this expensive detour.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Berlitz Rush Hour Express French.......2007-06-27

An easy and excellent way to learn very basic French greetings and words for someone who has never ever taken French in school. For those who have had any French language lessons, it's too easy, so they should purchase a more intermediate cd.

5 out of 5 stars The best!.......2007-04-07

As opposed to another reviewer, I found the scenarios on the CD to be a helpful and fun way to learn about various situations I'd run into. The words and phrases learned in the "date" scenario work equally as well for any meal situation. And I LOVED the music! It seemed to make the words "sink in" more quickly for me. I listened to this multiple times before I went to France last Fall (my second trip) and felt very comfortable using the few words and phrases that I had learned. I'm headed to Greece soon and just wish they had one for Greek (they don't).

3 out of 5 stars Fine if you use a book or another CD..........2006-12-13

While I have a few gripes about this CD--it's too short, not enough of the basics, and while the date idea may be cute, it's not the only scenario you'll face while traveling :). The music was way too cutesy for me...

*However*, I did find that it's an inexpensive way to get back into speaking French. I did go to Paris after listening to this and was able to use some basic phrases. The music I found cheesy was probably a good way to memorize some of these phrases.

All in all, not a bad way to begin, but if you want to be able to count above 10 or ask more questions than name and where are you from, then you'll need another CD.

4 out of 5 stars Good Value...Fun!.......2006-08-29

This is another very reasonably priced language entry from Berlitz. It's just one CD. You can print the script from their website, but it's not necessary because the material is repeated clearly throughout the hour-long program. The strategy here is to set the key phrases to music over a sketchy narrative. It's like listening to a loony musical. You will find yourself singing the phrases and some will loop through your mind. Good idea. I have a little difficulty with the promise on the CD box: "Learn a new language in just one hour". Hardly. However, beginning students will hve fun learning some useful words and phrases.

1 out of 5 stars Love Pimsleur!.......2006-12-05

The only French I spoke before purchasing these tapes was to say my name is Melodee and I don't speak French. For those of us who know nothing of the language the repetition was great. I know how to ask for things such as food, drink, directions. I'm clever enough to apply the rules and make sentences using different combinations of the words I've learned. These tapes teach the way a child learns, completely through listening. Children are not taught I speak, you speak, he/she/it speaks. They simply listen and repeat. After listening to the tapes I went to other sources to read the actual words and was astonished at the differences in how I would say what I read and the actual pronunciation of the words. Seeing the words after learning how the French pronounce them gives you a clear idea of where the nasal sounds are. I've just purchased the lengthy version of French I and am very excited to get started. I'm only going to be in Paris for 5 days this visit but I want to have a few phrases under my belt. My current favorite is "I would like some wine, please." A French woman I know said she is impressed with my pronunciation and understanding of basic French. J'aime Pimsleur!

As some one who studied french 10 years ago in high school and college and looking to brush up for a week in france, book learning was easy but HEARING, PRONUNCIATIOn and SPEAKING were the hard parts. I broke down and purchase this at a store because my local library had NO audio books that weren't already checked out. The lessons are (8) 30-minute lessons. But the lessons are weird esp if you are using this to "brush up". The first lesson was a few sentences of speech. You then spent the next half hour of that lesson repeating EACH syllable of each word in each SHORT conversation over and over again.. No wonder they can easily package (8) 30 minute lessons. The lessons are strangely presented. It explains in what context you might use a particular phrase. For example, if you wanted to ask someone if they spoke french, you'd want to use the phrase "Est ce vous parlez l'anglais? (Do you speak English?)" Well DUH!!!! The lessons seemed geared to making you memorize key phrases, which is a bit difficult when you can't see the words that you're pronouncing, which then makes it only memorizing sounds you hear. For example the first lesson is only 7 sentences long, about two people going back and forth if they understand french or english. Bits and pieces of each sentences are recylcled over and over again in the the other sentences of this same lesson. 27 minutes devoted to this first lesson. You also need a good EAR to hear the subtleties of the french nasal pronunciation. Now I'm just mad that I tore the darn plastic off and the store won't let me return this garbage. Thank god I used a gift certificate that someone gave me as opposed to my own good money.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to the larger set, good teaser.......2004-03-20

I like the Pimsleur system. I have used it with Traveler's Spanish, the Spanish I, and this set for French. I prefer the cassettes to the CDs becasue of they are easier back up so as to retrace areas. The concept of listen/repeat in your car on the way to work without alot of book-study at the lower levels is effective, easy, fun.
The purpose of this particular French set of 4 cassettes is to provide an introduction into the Pimsleur system to see if you like the system and want to move directly up to the larger Level I set.
If you are planning to use this set to get ready for a trip to France, this may not be the correct set for you. If you will only be in Paris two days or less, this might be OK. But if you are going to be there 3 days or longer, or if you want to brush up on your high school French, then pass over this set and go for the Traveler's Edition set, which is specifically designed for those purposes.
It works, its fun, get the right one.
If you are not sure if you have any aptitude for French or if you want to go further, this is a good set to sample. If you know you want to go more deeply into the language, this will not be enough.

4 out of 5 stars Quick, but not enough content.......2004-02-11

Don't think that you are getting 8 different lessons. Each subsequent lesson spends about 70%-80% reviewing the previous lesson. The quality of the lessons are good though, but I wish I knew that the 8 lessons don't teach much French at all. I would save the money and buy the full French 1 Language Program which has 16 CDs (the first 4 are very similar to this one).

I wish I had had this book when my daughter was younger and we were struggling to understand her challenges! As we learned more about Asperger's Syndrome and the difficulties my daughter would experience, we stumbled through ways to process her emotions and tried to do our best. With "Let's Talk Emotions" we now have a comprehensive guide to not only understand our daughter's struggles, but also her point of view. We can see more clearly how she processes emotions and, most importantly, we have the tools we need to assist and teach her. Now we can see the "light at the end of the tunnel". As we have used the processes, exercises & information in "Let's Talk Emotions", we have seen remarkable growth in our daughter's abilities. We will always owe a debt to Ms. Cardon for the clarity & understanding she has brought to our daughter's life and to ours!!

2 out of 5 stars Pimsleur Express.......2006-11-05

I would not order the Express series again. The Quick and simple is much more geared toward learning. The Express CD mostly just gives you words to repeat and I ended up buying something else. I do recommend Pimsleur for language learning though.

3 out of 5 stars Italian: Learn to Speak and Understand Italian with Pimsleur Language Programs (Pimsleur Express).......2006-11-04

Very good CD's I put them on my I POD and was able to listen while out walking. etc. It could have been much better if it had a Book to follow looking at words sometime makes it a lot quicker to learn.

5 out of 5 stars Travel Language for Survival - Not Indepth Language Study.......2005-03-01

In reading some of the other reviews I am amazed at what people think a single CD course will accomplish. The Pimsleur Express courses (I've used Spanish, French, Italian, German and Russian) are not gimmicks, but merely an effort to provide a bit of comfort with spoken basics and travel expressions. If I want to learn a language well enough to survive several weeks in a foreign country I know I'll need a more indepth course than this. These do, however, give me enough to do one of those tours where I'm spending 2, 3 or 4 days in a country (or several countries), before moving on to another.

The only reason I give them a 5-star rating is that they do exactly what they say they will. Even though the second part is an oral listing of basic travel expressions, rather than fully developed Pimsleur lessons. I found that, when coupled with a great phrasebook (such as those published by Lonely Planet), Pimsleur gave me enough exposure to the phrases to be able to either read or say them correctly. Yes, I did have to review the travel phrases several times to learn them, but I think if Pimsleur took the time to develop separate travel lessons in the Pimsleur format I'd have had to pay a lot more for them, and I'd have had to spend a lot more time studying them.

If Pimsleur is guilty of any gimmick, it's the same gimmick others use by trying to tell us we can learn a language in several hours (or 10 minutes a day) -- and the Pimsleur Express doesn't make that claim -- just that it's a quick introduction to important phrases needed for travel. They haven't prepared me for deep philosophical discussions, but they have successfully gotten me through airports, train stations, in and out of taxis, stores, hotels and restaurants. I think that's exactly what they were created for.

3 out of 5 stars Marketing Gimmick, Only Decent Italian Speakers Should Buy.......2004-12-31

This Pimsleur Express CD contains a 25 minute conversation lesson followed by about 40 minutes of "scenes", or typical travel situations.

The conversation lesson is obviously the highlight of this product. Organized in the patented Pimsleur style, it stuck immediately.

The "scenes" contain many useful phrases, but I retained very, very little on the first listen. Several listens later, I have still not retained much. However, I do value the facts that (1) the vocab is topical, and (2) native speakers do the talking. Maybe by the 30th listen I will have this all down. This makes the "scenes" portion of the CD about on-par with Pimsleur's competitors (too much work!). The "scenes" are all about repition.

This product is a gimmick. I assume that Pimsleur wanted to create a low-priced product that would look attractive on the bookstore shelf next to the $20+ Michel Thomas, Berlitz, Living Language, etc. etc. products. People will buy this for the topical vocab and the low price. But they will keep buying Pimsleur because their conversation lessons work.

If I ever buy a Pimsleur Express CD again, it will be in a language I already speak pretty well, not in a language I am just starting to learn. A decent Italian speaker could get a lot more out of this product. In the meantime, I will try the Pimsleur Instant Conversation method that worked so well for me in other languages.

3 out of 5 stars Just a Taste.......2004-09-30

This is really just an introduction to the Pimsleur system. It includes Lesson One from their regular audio course, and a series of travel-related dialogues for listening and repeating, with a printed booklet for following the "story".
It could be helpful for practice in listening to spoken Italian, but it doesn't really offer a lot. I would recommend just going straight to the full Pimsleur course instead.

      5 out of 5 stars East Watercolor.......2006-08-03

At no time in my life did I ever have the desire, let alone the
ability to paint a picture, except possibly a house.
For whatever reason, I have the book and find myself
addicted to following the easy steps the author has compiled.
Once I had started reading chapter one, I found myself working
to the end of the book in one sitting, which gave me the
confidence that I certainly needed to get started with the
paint. After several mishaps, I moved through the book while
painting and I gained even more confidence. Although I am just
a beginner in the art world, I find this book easy to lean on
so to speak in moving from one area of the painting to the
other. I consider it a must for anyone wanting to get started
in the watercolor field of art. If it helped me, it certainly
can help anyone, even those of us who have trouble drawing a
      straight line.

      5 out of 5 stars Outstanding!.......2003-07-09

This is one of the better books of it's kind that I have found.

Ms. Moses doesn't try to snow people into a false sense of I know it all and you don't.

The instruction is easy to follow and very detailed.

One is benefited greatly and can be helped in the development of their own style.

This is a dream to read because Ms. Moses goes out of her way not to talk over your head.

I have read it from cover to cover and still am learning.

Art is a passion which has beginnings and this has been a great start for me.

3 out of 5 stars Not so easy.......2003-07-08

Despite the aesthetic pleasure one might derive from perusing this book's pages in a bookstore, hoping that this is their key to gorgeous watercolor paintings, this book is not what it claims to be - "easy watercolor." It's definitely more along the lines of "intermediate - or more likely professional - watercolor." Though Moses shares a good deal of her ideas and techniques, the book does not go so far as to answer the challenge of how get to the point of having a painting worthy or even remotely necessary of these techniques. Her how-tos jump, not range from, a ridiculously simple watermelon slice to a street scene in France. This is, all the while, assuming you already know how to draw professionally, seeing as how you've jumped from a slice of watermelon to a deluxe French street. Tutorials will jump from a simple wash of one color to a deluxe painting with loads of colors and intricate details, none of which have been explained or shown in between the process.

The author's own paintings are quite far from captivating; a great deal of things are out of proportion and unintentionally unappealing. Her only two paintings of humans, for instance - one of a little boy, and one of her father - share the exact same pose and the exact same disproportions.

There are, however, helpful value scales, examples of washes, gradations, and principles, if only for the more advanced artist. Which brings me back to my original point - this book is not _easy_ watercolor, and I doubt many beginners that aren't highly skilled aritsts already will find it the right step between knowing nothing and knowing it all.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspiring!.......2003-04-15

"Easy Watercolor" was truly inspiring. It contains a wealth of experience set out in an easy to follow format. Not only does it include all the basics but it teaches many great techniques. The content gave me confidence and the artwork gave me inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars Easy Watercolor REALLY IS Easy.......2002-12-20

This book offers a refreshing look at watercolor painting regardless of the reader's skill level. Detailed instructions are written and illustrated in a most comprehensible manner. The illustrations are step-by-step providing the artist with the insight of the author's years' in watercolor! It is the most all-inclusive, easy to follow art instruction book that I have ever encountered. I recommend it for beginners, intermediate and advanced watercolor artists. IF YOU HAVE A DESIRE TO EMBRACE WATERCOLOR PAINTING, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.

4 out of 5 stars Great down and dirty to get by.......2005-12-23

If you need a quick primer on Japanese for a short jaunt to Japan to get some work done, this CD will adquately teach you enough about pronunciation to get you by - along with an English to Japanese travel book. With about 20 words under your belt and the resouce to find an pronounce the word you need (when you need it)- you will survive. When I got sick in Japan it was worth a million to be able to say "I have a cough" and then pay 2,500 yen for 8 sudafed!

Don't rely on one resource alone - you will be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Learn to walk first, then you can run!.......2005-11-28

Yeah, sure, this is a "Quick and Simple" course.
And as the previous review says its a "try before you buy"
        situation.

I got this Q&S as an audiobook download and was
        quite impressed with it.
The approach that Pimsleur uses is quite unique
and definitely the most effective I've ever come across.

As someone who has spent my hard earned $$ on
various language learning aids and been sadly disappointed
for one reason or another, I was quite elated to discover
        the Pimsleur Approach series.

They do exactly what they claim. Its done on a build
and review method of introducing vocabulary through
various conversational scenarios and then reviewing
the vocabulary in such a way that it really helps to
        reinfoce what has been learned.

And I also like it because you don't necessarily
need any books to accompany the lessons.
I downloaded the Q&S onto my iPod and listen to
        it quite often.

So, in conclusion. If you really want to learn another
language, leave all those other study programs on the
store shelf and give Pimsleur a try. I'm certain you'll
        thank yourself later.

2 out of 5 stars Overall Not very helpful..........2004-03-04

The first chapter is a GREAT, reassuring 30 minute "Do you understand English?", "Do you understand English" lesson. I could really speak these helpful phrases after 2 morning commutes. The rest of the chapters are about 3 minutes in length and just go way to fast to understand anything. They are also random situations such as "I have a stomach ache".
From other reviews I read, the $35 or $45 (amazon priced) Pimsleur versions have more of the terrific 30 minute lessons.
Although all is not lost, the box does include a helpful phrase card and small booklet of the random conversations on the CD.

In my opinion, this just gives you 1, 30 minute audio chapter in hopes you'll buy the larger one. Just save the $10-12 on this and buy the other.

1 out of 5 stars Read this please!.......2003-07-31

The main reason for buying the Q&S version is that a) you're not sure you like the Pimsleur method or b) you can't afford the full version. BUT you can try lesson 1 online for free so there's no need to buy it just to try it. And as for not being able to afford it. If you're really committed to learn Japanese you will -find- a way to buy at least the Instant Conversation set.

I'm not giving this version just 1 star because I don't like it, the first 8 lessons of Pimsleur are great... only thing is that they are the FIRST 8 lessons. Not the only ones. You will get so much more if you buy more lessons so you should save your money and buy Instant Conversation or Level 1.
