When my wife opened the box, she was completely disappointed: the book was thin, the paper was poor (black and white) and the pages had its borders yellow - sign of a book that was forgotten for many years...

It could be improved if:
- could have more projects;
- the paper could be better;
- and the drwaings could be in full color

Definitive book of the Coast to Coast, with excellent photos.......1998-09-29

According to some of three of my friends the book 'Wainwright's Coast to Coast' has a lot to answer for. At a party on New Years Eve, 1994, the hostess passed around the book in question. I just had time to read a bit of the introductory material inside the dust jacket, and look through the photographs, taken by Derry Brabbs. Loads of excellent pictures of the wilds of northern England, taken throughout the year in all types of lighting conditions from blue summer skies to overcast darkness brooding over snow covered mountains.

Before the end of January 1995, I had booked accommodation on the walk for four adults at the end of August. Well my web site lists the trials and tribulations of that long trek in Wainwright's footsteps.

The text of the book describes the stages of the walk, and gives some of the history of the places visited, without going into the actual details of the route in much depth. The book is not so much a walkers guide book, like some of Wainwright's work on the mountains of the Lake District, but rather a coffee table book, which may inspire some brave souls to actually try it for themselves.

The photos are what make up the largest part of the book, and they are indeed excellent. All the best views of the route are shown, plus some which are quite a way off the path, like the pictures of the various ancient crosses in the North York Moors. Although it isn't raining or thick with mist in any of the shots, there are many which show dark clouds, rivers swollen with rain, and some rather wintery scenes with ice and snow. This tries to show the hills as they really, not like the pretty blue skied postcards one so often sees. Although I did wonder how he managed to get shots of some the Lake District areas without any people in them? He probably got up very early in the morning.

Flawed but helpful.......2007-06-03

When planning a recent trip to the Lake District, I needed information on good hikes and this was just about the only guide I could find that looked like it might be helpful. The basic structure of the book is not bad as it breaks hikes into three main categories based on difficulty. I might quibble with some of the ratings but since the author reveals the mileage and elevation change you can judge for yourself whether you're up to the challenge regardless of the rating. The individual hikes are described in very thorough detail and I found that this was very helpful as trails may fork with no signs. Good directions are also given for accessing the trailheads.

The faults with this book are not severe but definitely detract from its overall utility. First, the color photos included from the hikes are the quality of mediocre snapshots. I found myself flipping through and wondering if any of the hikes would be worth the effort is that was all I'd see. The publisher really needs to get better quality photos to represent what you might see on the trails. The other issue I had was that the author does little to stress that one trail is any more beautiful than another. I realize that this is in the eye of the beholder to a certain extent but we all know that in any scenic location there will end up being a handful of spots that nearly everyone finds especially lovely. If such places exist in the Lake District, you won't find out about it in this book. That's a shame because it's a huge area that no visitor can possibly explore in full during an ordinary vacation and I would have greatly appreciated some help in prioritizing places to explore.

Despite the drawbacks I mention, this is still a book worth buying. The Lake District is simply huge with hundreds of miles of hiking trails. This book at least gives you the means to find some of the best and helps you stay on track when you're there. If it isn't perfect, it is still quite useful and I was happy to have it on my trip.

I THOUGHT THIS BOOK WAS WONDERFUL, I READ IT IN A DAY. YES THE TREATMENTS AND OPTIONS FOR WOMAN TODAY ARE 100 TIMES BETTER BUT THE FEELINGS YOU GO THROUGH ARE STILL THE SAME. SHE WRITES WITH SUCH HONESTY ABOUT EVERY ASPECT OF THE PROCESS OF TREATMENT AND PICKING UP THE PIECES ONCE YOU GET HOME. GOOD BOOK.

The book is an oldie, but the disease is still with us........2006-07-13

I read this book years ago, but never dreamed the day would come when I, too, would be diagnosed with breast cancer.

The experiences Betty went through are much the same as what most of us go through after we hear the diagnosis; however, over the years, treatments and medications have changed allowing us a great chance of survival. Like everything else in life, there are no guarantees.

I like the way Betty told her story, because she had a positive attitude about her illness, which is half the battle in itself. She never portrayed the "poor me" attitude and is an inspiration to others. However, it is an older book and I found some of the statements a little redundant in view of the changing times. For this reason, the book rated three stars. Overall, I still enjoyed the book.

First, You Cry.......2005-08-02

I bought this book for a friend who has Breast Cancer and only read some of it, however, she has told me it is very helpful and she is getting a lot out of it. There is nothing like hearing from someone else who has had some or all of your experiences and this is done well and in a very positive fashion.

Dated and trivial.......2001-01-16

Don't waste your time or money! No doubt, when this book was first written it was a ground breaker. Unfortunately, there isn't any real help to be found in the text. Today, there is much more valuable information available. At a time when your physical and emotional energy hits some real lows, spend your time reading something that can really help. I would highly recommend "Just Get Me Through This" by Deborah Cohen and Robert Gelfand, M.D.

A milestone book.......2000-10-08

When I was a teenager I remember reading Betty Rollin's book for the first time. It had an enormous impact on me because it was really the first time anyone had ever spoken about their experience with breast cancer. Little did I know that when I was 50 years old I would also develop breast cancer. I thought about this book and tried to find it but it was out of print. I was so glad to see it back with new information. The feelings she describes are still true today but what a difference the new treatments have made.

I was downsized myself years ago and Peggy's book is right on target! A great perspective on the atrosities on corporate America-good for her. A must read for anyone who had ever gone through adversity on their lives.

I just finished this book and really enjoyed it. I found it amazing that so many of Ms. Pattison's experiences in life and in corporate America are very similar to mine.

Downsized and Survived.......2004-09-11

Ms. Pattison's book made me cry again and then fly just as her title suggests. For far too long corporate America has chosen downsizing as a means to create a leaner and more productive workforce. The problem, as Ms. Pattison so eloquently points out, is that the most experienced and productive workers are the ones who are being downsized, leaving organizations leaner but without the talent and experience to be more productive.

I believe that this book should be required reading for anyone entering the corporate jungle but even more I recommend it to those who are currently living and ruling there. As this book points out corporate America is imploding with all of its downsizing of experience and turning to temporary workers and outsourcing to professionals, who have themselves been downsized from a competitor or in some cases from the very corporation that is now hiring them.

I could have written this book because Ms. Pattison's experience has been my own several times during my career. However, I would not have done it with the same flair and humanity. I recommend this book and thank the author for writing this honest, funny and true look at downsizing and life after.

At First You Cry .... and Then You Fly!.......2004-05-27

In 184 pages Ms. Pattison concisely discusses the reactions of downsized executives, actually anyone downsized, and offers
new perspectives on recovering from the depression and fear downsized individuals experience. Neither her experience nor her
response to it are totally new; however, her book is an excellent response to her situation and that of many others.

Since she was a corporate trainer who had to terminate or downsize others her explanations of what is wrong with corporate America's strategy are accurate and to the point. When she explains the effect the downsizing has on the company involved and on the economy as it tries to revive itself she brings several intelligent points to current economic discussions.

Of special interest are the examples she provides of companies terminating valued long term employees and then not having other staff with the skills necessary to fill the vacated positions. Still corporate America doesn't learn and continues to dump the most valable resource it has without providing a skilled back-up workforce. Ms. Pattison seems to be telling others, like herself, to consult or form businesses to outsource those needed skills to the very companies that downsized them and to do it at a much higher price and with a great deal more freedom.

Her points on "then you fly" are a blueprint for moving forward with your life and making you happy in a new and more challenging environment.

Read this book to know others are facing the same dilemma's you are, why all of you are facing these problems, how one very special talented woman got out, and how to chart your way out of the depression and fear of downsizing into a new life.
