older book yet still a valuable guide.......2001-02-24

the only reason this book does not get 5 stars is because it is not written this year. though written a few years ago it still holds much value as an incrediable guide book. allowing the traveller to look beyond the regular, average-joe, tourist things-to-do and really experience the country with a budget in mind.

i was completely impressed with the lack of attitude this book was written with. this book does not dictact like most other travel books. instead, you get the views of a group of university students, many thoughts, many opinions, which allows you to create your own opinion rather than being told.

it leaves you open to see all parts of the many countries listed in this book, not just the pricy hotels and tourist areas. i felt this book showed me a part of guatemala that i would not have seen if travelling with any other book. completely original in its way of travelling, and ideas about what to see and do. i would not doubt to reccomend this book to any of my friends, even though it is slightly dated.

i, once again, set my travelling sights toward central america and would not dream of being there without this book.

what more needs to be said??!@?!! it rules.

this book allows you to travel with value in mind. money does not dictate good times. the possibilities are endless with this book, regardless of the amount of money spent. definately ideal for the student or younger minded traveller with adventure in mind.

just wish they would continue to publish more of these perfect travel companions. last year i checked out the new york edition too. it was just as great. hope to see other similar publications in the future!!

Coastal Waters of the World is a comprehensive reference source on the state of the world's coastal areas. It focuses on the tremendous pressures facing coastal areas and the management systems and strategies needed to cope with them. Don Hinrichsen explores the origins and implications of three related issues: the overwhelming threats to our coastal resources and seas from population and pollution; the destruction of critical resources through unsustainable economic activity; and the inability of governments to craft and implement rational coastal management plans.

There is nothing wrong with this strategy guide, except that the game itself doesn't require a lot of strategy, and therefore, you will not need this book all too often.

It did however get me out of a few frustrating situations, where it simply wasn't all too clear what to do. (The book simply made up for the lack of good game design and instructions in those cases...)

Maddening.......2006-08-10

A stunningly bad exercise in stupidity. The book was both poorly reasoned and poorly written. The authored failed to support their "argument" with even the most rudimentary analysis and quantitative evidence. In addition, they completely failed to place their loose ideas into context and apparently have no understanding of history. To wit: A poll tax on voting? Um, excuse me? Have you no education in the history of voting oppression and the fight for civil rights in history?

Interesting and insightful but overly wordy.......2001-04-13

In short the book could have been about 60% shorter. At times the hypothesis drawn are illuminating but very often the authors are spending entirely too much time to support their insights. My feeling is that anyone reading a book such as this doesn't necessarily need a whole lot of convincing as long as there is some sound rationale and telling examples to support the theories.

Having just completed the book I would recommend that anyone interested in picking up the book just look at the last 15 pages to get a sense of the nature of the book where the authors make predictions regarding the next 500 months and the next 500 years.

There are however some very keen insights on the power and use of technology (connectivity), tribalism, the role of corporations and government, business and social constructs, the importance of constant education, the nature of chaos, the power of the consumer... and almost all of this is addressed from primarily a marketing perspective.

There was very little that was written that I disagreed with but I feel like the same thing could have been said in many fewer words.

The only thing I can say after reading this book is--baloney! I've never read a more useless business book such as this. I have no doubt that the author has never worked a day in his life. Get a job! Get a life!

Baloney warning.......1999-09-04

I couldn't agree more with the reviewer from "Sodom-on-the-Bay." Beware authors whose self-esteem rests so strongly on their image as iconoclasts. Beware them particularly when they resort to "paradox" as an explanation for any line of reasoning that leaves them painted into a corner. On the other hand, these guys are trying to take a fresh look at business and marketing conundrums, and their stories often yield interesting insights which, unfortunately, they're not so great at articulating or generalizing from. Instead, they opt for sounding "deep" by claiming that the stories defy traditional analysis. A useful rule of thumb might be to skim any paragraph that deals in abstracts (high balderdash quotient there) and pay more attention to the anecdotes.

Well-intentioned, occasionally useful, but..........1999-06-10

You really have to approach this book with your baloney detectors on 'High.' There's a lot of excellent, insightful analysis on what's going on with the change 'jerk' (where 'jerk' is defined as the rate of change of the rate of change -- the acceleration of acceleration) of recent years, where changes in technology drive societal changes at an expanding pace. There's also a whole lot of unfocused hogwash and one-true-wayism; these kids take themselves quite seriously, in that bedrock way that people who think they *don't* take themselves too seriously sometimes do. You can sift through the bullpuckey to find a good haul of useful nuggetry, but if you swallow this book whole, you'll find that the sharp corners don't go down so easy.

Informative, but poorly written.......2001-05-16

Daughters of the Canton Delta provides the reader with a great deal of interesting information regarding marriage practices and the struggle of women in the Canton Delta. Unfortuantely, Stockard seems to have trouble writing concisely. Sentences are often repeaded multiple times before she feels her point has been appropriately conveyed. This makes for somewhat of a frusterating read.

Daughters of the Canton Delta is not only one of my favorite anthropology texts, but it stands alone as a great read. Although the author went to a great deal of research and fieldwork, each chapter reads easily and quickly. It makes a great classroom text or bedside reading. This book provides the perfect opportunity for someone who doesn't have much experience with good anthropology (research and study), but wants to. I'd also highly recommend it to anyone who has an interest in asian cultures in general, there are many practices or aspects of marriage revealed in this book that I imagine even many inhabitants of South China don't know.

The poems of Delta Blues protests against the environmental degradation of the Niger Delta, and the devastation unleashed upon local populations, victims, and caught up in the race for oil.
