Customer Reviews:
Wonderful product and process.......2007-09-22
The map certainly met my needs. It provided a detailed downtown map and provided detail for the surrounding counties. It lists post offices, churches, and points of interest.
Not organized in a way that is useful for readers.......2007-03-09
They should have separated the maps according to counties but
they did not. It is difficult to use especially if you are
not already familiar with the area.
Get It While You Can!.......2006-11-08
This Map Book is a must for anyone in the service business in the Atlanta area.
A more detailed and extended county map is not to be found.
I have been told by the publisher that this extended book has been discontinued and once gone will be gone forever.

Book Description
Now reissued in an expanded edition, this unique book offers the first full-length treatment of women's initiation rites in five cultures. Asserting the critical importance of such rites in a world dominated by men, Lincoln shows that in these societies women's initiation involves not only a transformation of the self but also of the cosmos. Considering initiation rites among the Tiyyar of South India, the Navajo, the Tiv of West Africa, and the Tukuna of the Northwest Amazon, Lincoln argues that unlike men's rites, women's rites do not impart a change in hierarchical status, but rather a "cosmic" change which offers religious compensation for women's generally low socio-political status. Lincoln concludes with a brilliant reconstruction of ancient Greek initiation rites based on his original interpretation of the Demeter and Persephone myth. With a new chapter and bibliography, Emerging from the Chrysalis will be stimulating reading for those interested in ritual and its cultural impact.

Book Description
The tumultuous experiences Abraham Lincoln had with the women in his life have long been known, but here the stories have been brought together - and filled out with newly discovered accounts - in a fresh, new way that shows their effect on Lincoln's personality, ambition, and spirit:
- The death of his mother when he was nine years old gave him a feeling of abandonment.
- The discovery that his mother's ancestry and reputation were scandalous and that he may have been illegitimate.
- The unexpected death of his beloved sister, Sarah.
- The untimely death of Ann Rutledge, probably the only woman with whom Lincoln shared a deep, wonderful love.
- His sudden and unexpected marriage to Mary Todd, a marriage that was Lincoln's greatest tragedy.
Not overlooked are the positive impacts of women on Lincoln and he on them, especially his stepmother - the first person to treat him with respect.
This in-depth book reveals the effect that women had on Abraham Lincoln's life and career.
Customer Reviews:
If I could give this book zero stars, I would........2007-01-16
This was absolutely the most ridiculous book I've read regarding Lincoln. Jason Emerson's review listed below says it all. Winkler should have written a book about his ancestor, and not bothered those of us who are not interested in reading about her.
Biased..........2005-06-25
I was very disappointed in this book. I had hoped to learn more about the women in Lincoln's life, but as it turns out, the author is related to Ann Rutledge (supposedly the love of Lincoln's life), and the author spends way too much time telling us how wonderful she was. He keeps bringing her name up in other contexts ("If Ann had been alive..." and so forth), and you'd almost expect that he would suggest that she be cannonized as a saint. It gets rather tedious, to say the least.
Consequently, many other women that he met (such as Sojourner Truth) get mere mention or a few paragraphs, and of course, Mary Todd Lincoln is portrayed as an absolute nutcase.
It's a shame--this could have been a great book.
A Major Contribution to Lincoln Studies.......2003-04-17
It seems to me that a few reviews of this book have been extremely unfair, especially those by Mr. Emerson and someone who calls himself "kdpsyd." Mr. Winkler is an accomplished scholar and award-winning author who has written the first full-length book on this intriguing subject. I purchased the book after reading reviews from authoritative sources, and have found it to be extremely informative and fascinating. As "Civil War Times" noted, this book is "important and highly provocative and readable." "Civil War News" called it intriguing and engrossing and "quite thought-provoking. . . with careful notes and an impressive bibliography." "Today's Books," an independent report to the news media on the book-publishing industry rated this book "a best read." Such recognition is given only to "the top ten percent of new books published and distributed in America each year."
Building upon the latest published Lincoln scholarship, Mr. Winkler has developed startling new insights and added fresh information about Lincoln's New Salem years, including the most complete story in existence of Ann Rutledge's life and the
Lincoln-Rutledge romance.
The book is obviously based on solid research and should be read by anyone interested in what previously has been a puzzling aspect of Lincoln's life.
a great new perspective.......2003-04-01
I was quite thrilled when I saw this book in the bookstore. I have read numerous books on Abraham Lincoln, however, this was a perspective about his life I had not read much about. Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed reading this book. It was very well-written and engaging; enough so that it only took me two days to read it. I was captivated. Yes, at times the book seemed prejudicial against Lincoln's wife and biased in favour of Ann Rutledge, however his point of view was very interesting to note. I highly recommend this book to anyone willing to get a firm grasp on all aspects of Lincoln's life. It was just incredible!!!
Dismal.......2003-03-21
The author shows a limited understanding of Lincoln. He failed to research his subject. The author is misguided and misinformed. This book is an insult to Lincoln scholars.

Book Description
The tumultuous experiences Abraham Lincoln had with women have long been chronicled. Lincoln's Ladies attempts to answer the questions of how he was affected by the women in his life and how he affected them.
Abandoned through death by his mother, his sister, and his sweetheart, Ann Rutledge, Lincoln found it difficult to relate to women and developed an emotional barrier that often antagonized them. Abstract and cool, he feared intimacy and marriage and, following Ann Rutledge's untimely death, was incapable of loving anyone the way he had loved her, probably the only woman with whom he shared a deep and wonderful love.
Lincoln fumbled his way through other courtships and was turned down at least twice.
He then stumbled into a strange relationship with Mary Toddone culminated by marriage through her trickery and his sense of "honor." Lincoln's marriage to her was his greatest tragedy, "a burning, scorching hell as terrible as death and as gloomy as the grave," said William Herndon, Lincoln's partner and biographer.
According to H. Donald Winkler, Lincoln's emotions and motivations were shaped from a mixture of crippling and energizing experiences associated with women, experiences that profoundly affected his personal and professional lives. Lincoln's Ladies explores the impact of more than thirty women on his life. Not overlooked, however, are the positive impacts of women on Lincoln and he on them, especially his stepmother, who probably was the first person to treat him with respect and glimpse his potential.
Customer Reviews:
Fascinating exploration of a great President's private life.......2004-12-06
Now in a newly revised and expanded edition, Lincoln's Ladies is the eyebrow-raising true story of Abraham Lincoln's often troubled life and the women who influenced it. From his treasured first love, who unfortunately perished shortly after they became engaged, to his tumultuous relationship with his wife Mary Todd, who is documented as verbally abusing him (and the domestic help) on countless occassions and even chasing him with a broom, to numerous other women, not all of them romantic relationships, who came to speak with and know Lincoln in various ways, Lincoln's Ladies is a fascinating exploration of a great President's little-known private life. Written by an award-winning journalist, Lincoln's Ladies is a must-read for anyone curious about the nuances of history in general and Licoln's life in particular.

Book Description
In the early 1990s, at the peak of the crack cocaine epidemic, the author, Linda Falkner, became a foster parent. Most of her children were infants who had been exposed to alcohol and drugs. Trying to help these children fit into her home, and the world, was only the beginning of the challenges she and her family faced. I WOULD BE LOVED is about kids who were damaged by drugs, alcohol, abuse, and by the system meant to protect them. The older foster children had been emotionally, physically, and often sexually abused. One foster child, a girl named Pixie, came to live with the Falkner family after leaving foster care at eighteen. She had grown up in hundreds of foster homes and was severely mentally ill. Pixie lived with the Falkner's, on and off, for ten years. In that time, they taught her many life skills, and tried to let her know that she is loved -- but that was the hardest lesson of all for her to learn. I Would Be Loved is Pixie's story as much as it is Linda's.
Customer Reviews:
Couldn't put it down........2003-03-02
The pictures and stories that show what alcohol can do to a baby are shocking. More people need to know about this tragedy so it can be prevented. This is a fast reading and fascinating book.
A must read.......2002-11-19
I use this book in jr and high schools. The kids are fascinated and amazed. Hopefully, this will prevent some of them from drinking during pregnancy, and save a child from this tragedy. This book is not only a great read, but it's full of must know facts. Very highly researched, and written from her heart.
Caregiving Reality.......2002-04-17
Ms. Falkner provides readers with a dose of realism in living with children exposed prenatally to alcohol. Social service professionals, foster parents and adoptive parents would be wise to read this to gain a better understanding of the devastation FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder) causes in the life of the child. Only by facing the truth as a society will we be able to prevent this 100% preventable birth defect. This book would also make great reading for high school students in health classes.
Fostering for Special Ones with Fetal Alcohol.......2002-04-14
In this memory of foster caregiving Ms. Falkner brings together the true flavor of foster parenting in the age of "coke babies" and "crack moms". Little did we- as reader- know that ALCOHOL would prove to be the greater toxin. The first wave of little cocaine and other drug exposed children appeared to do well clinically and even educationally until a certain age, around 5-8 years. Suprisingly when alcohol was the come-down drug, or the drug not-of-choice in times of coke scarcity; the babies did not fare so well. These organic damages were evident from birth and never let up. Alcohol is a legal drug and Ms. Falkner makes it very clear how permanently her clients were affected; how readily accessible this legal teratogen remains and how terribly devastating pre-natal alcohol exposure is. There is no known safe amount of alcohol from conception through nursing. That is the premise of this book. Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder is the underlying thread which runs throughout. Subtle in its forces of confusion, overwhelm and lifelong vulnerability, a simple working knowledge of FASD is conspicuous by its absence in so many circles [CD treatment, adult child circles, the field of corrections, special education etc]. This book makes a good read for anybody beginning to see how very wide spread and unspoken FASD is still- despite two and a half decades of available wisdom in the public health arena as to the dangers of alcohol use by pregnant women. Judges, sherrifs, social workers, school principals, teachers and aides, as well as daycare providers, latch-key providers and foster caregivers and related professionals can all benefit by taking this book along on their summer breaks. Read something else for fun; because as human and warm as this memoir of a very special family is--you will no longer wonder "what's up with johnny?" or "why jane won't try?". Linda Falkner tells no lies. This is exactly how the system feels when in our homes. This is how pervasive and frightening the developmental delays and other disorders caused by exposing a fetus to alcohol......are when in our lives. Our kids are so very special. They need an outside brain. These biological moms can recover while their children [exposed] can never. As a foster caregiver during that same epoch, I am grateful to Linda Falkner. She has spoken my mind......and more. My heart sighs in sadness.

This is a must-read.......2007-08-13
Wow, what an amazing book. It was an assignment for class- i had to read the book over a weekend, and i did, entirely exdpecting to hate a novel that i was forced to read in 2 days. On that monday when i returned to school I had the pleasure of meeting Edgard Telles Ribeiro and talking with him about this amazing book... Its truely become one of my favorite books.. intriguing, so well-thought out, and on top of the writing style being unlike anything ive ever read before, phenomenal, the story is wonderful as well. And I was shocked to find out when i spoke with the author that its actually based on a true story that he had heard from a friend.. This book is definitely a must-read...
A quiet classic.............2002-02-21
This book started out as one that I picked up out of the bargain book bin, because I simply couldn't resist the title. It rapidly became, and remains, a book that I return to again and again.
On the surface, this book is the story of a young woman delving into a relative's past. However, that which would seem a mere memoir is presented in such a way as to develop into a truly memorable experience. The translation is poetic. And in Ghuillermina we have a classic heroine: a girl who withstands the trials of her youth in quiet bravery, who consciously chooses to take charge of her own life, and who, in doing so, comes into her own. Within a simple story about a young woman exploring her family and her past, Ribeiro has woven a tale that is both a rite of passage and a celebration of life.
This book is not only linguistically gorgeous, with a colorful and adventurous heroine, it is also a delightful "what if," a guilty pleasure of sorts. Definately worth sharing, as I have, with many a girlfriend!
