I'm ready to move!.......2005-06-12
By and large, this is an excellent series for moving beyond the usual sort of travel book and getting a look at what makes a city or a country work elsewhere in the world. I spent some time in the UK about forty years ago, got thoroughly hooked on London, and have made several visits back there since, but I was never able to figure a way to move there permanently -- or I simply never quite worked up the nerve. Whatever. The Thatcher years changed the city enormously and mostly not for the best, and the Blair years (which this book doesn't cover, obviously) probably have changed things yet again. But the root condition of "London-ness" hasn't changed in centuries, and the author does a very good job of communicating what that is, from the day-to-day workings of the "nanny state" and the natural civility and courtesy of most Londoners (most of them, most of the time) to thumbnail descriptions of the Metropolitan Area's neighborhoods and why you *really* don't want to own a car there if you can help it. Hargraves is a Yank who spent seven years living and working as an almost-ordinary bloke in London, and his perspective, leavened by dry wit, make for very engaging reading.
Excellent For Students.......1999-04-13
I'm planning on studying in London for a year or more, and was so greatful for this book. It's an interesting read, more than a reference book, but can be referred to over and over again. Reccomened if you are going to spend time living, not visiting London, or if you are just interested in the city and its culture.
All-in-one fact book for aspiring Londoners.......1998-07-18
I was happy to find this book because it answered all the questions I had about going to London and spending about six months there. It goes beyond the tourist layer of London (which is pretty thick) and gets you into the city as it exists for Londoners. Even after several months here I still refer to it often and it has helped me to really enjoy the city, away from the madding crowds.

Customer Reviews:
One of the poorest entries in a generally useful series.......2007-08-16
I've read several books in this series and this is, frankly, one of the least useful. The author is a native of Singapore (presumably ethnic Chinese) who moved more or less permanently to Britain in the early 1980s, but he seems still not to quite get it. There are also more than a few generalizations regarding non-Anglos that border on racism. In surveying the regions of the island, he mostly notes which famous authors came from there, or set their novels there. He seems to assume that various aspects of the British psyche will be very difficult for foreigners to understand -- things an American wouldn't give a second thought to, especially anyone who watches BBC programs on PBS. Perhaps it's just that Brits and Yanks, most of them, have a language in common. And there are numerous errors which should have been caught by an English copyeditor. No, "vicar" and "rector" do not "mean the same thing." And a vicar is not "sometimes known as a parson." He also seems to confuse Thomas Cranmer with Thomas Cromwell. And you "psych" yourself up (not "psyche"); there are lots and lots of minor but off-putting blunders like that. He also feels it necessary to explain how to use a place setting at table (the order of forks and spoons, etc). It's not the author's fault, obviously, that a fifteen-year-old book can't take into account the vast changes in Tony Blair's Britain, nor that the Royal Family has changed considerably. But Orin Hargraves's book on London in this series, published in 1997, is far more astute (and less fawning and bedazzled) about the British than Tan. (However, like all the books in this series, the index is downright pathetic.)
Poorly written but helpful..........2004-03-25
I picked up this book awhile back as I was planning on visiting Britain (though not living there). I just finished it yesterday and thought it was worth the notable effort to get through the book. Particularly worth mentioning:
- The author does a good job of pointing out possible faux pas (asking seemingly harmless questions like "Where do you live?") and non-issues (like how formally you dress). He mentions some important social rules - like not speaking on public transportation, not making a scene anywhere, not bothering your waiter unnecessarily, expecting gruff answers at certain spots, etc.
- In the midst of colorful details and random accounts, you can pick up helpful info - like tip 10% everywhere, the fog in Dickens/Holmes material was caused by the industrial revolution (and is now mostly gone), when restaurants/pubs tend to be open, etc.
- The author notes things that are changing with the times. If you read alot of historical British works (even from the 40's) then you might have some outdated notions of the importance of a high accent or dress. This is all clarified.
- Buried in the book is a rough history of England, history of the royal family, history of the government and historical places to see. All these things were helpful, if somewhat poorly written and hard to keep track of.
- Overall the guide is very positive and laid back. As such, I think you come away feeling relaxed and ready to engage this charming society.
- HOWEVER, the writing was poor - especially towards the end. By this I mean that the sentences were hard to read, punctuation was haphazzard, alot of information was repeated several times over, and the overall organization was poor. I kept thinking that there must be another way to get the same info across.
- Also, I found it very odd that for such a personal account (for that is what it is), you don't know alot about the author. It wasn't until the very end that I realized that the author was from Singapore - which, of course - threw a whole new light on all the information about race & discrimination & his neurotic attempts to "adapt." This also explains why he kept using terms I didn't know; he was explaining the British terms some, but then used other terminology I didn't know, so I felt that I was no better off. Finally, I'm not really sure if the author is a he or a she. I use "he" but I'm not sure. It's a little unnerving in this type of personalized narrative.
good intro.......2003-09-09
I liked this book and thought it pulled together more info in one volume than anything else I've seen. Some generalizations are unavoidable. I thought it was a plus that the author has lived in Asia and came to the UK as an immigrant--I think that adds to his/her perspective. The book could use some photos and color, however.
A Painful Read.......2001-07-20
Getting ready to go on international assignment, I picked up a copy of this book. The author's breathless inanities ran along the lines of (a paraphrase), "wow, some British men used to wear bowler hats." I found very little useful in this book to prepare me for the transition, and was occasionally offended by his borderlne racist generalizations. I was expecting sociology and got sleaze instead.
Could have been worse..........2001-05-15
I purchased this book while I was engaged to my British husband, in an effort to adjust to the cultural aspects of living in another country after our wedding. This book was *not* very helpful. It didn't help at all in the *adjustment* process. Also, if you live (or plan to live) outside of London don't waste your money. Sure, it talked about some of the things that people coming to the UK might need to know, like differences in language, but if you're American, this book can be a bit confusing because the author is a speaker of Asian English (I think Hong Kong), which is much closer to British English than to American English.

It was so bland and uninformative I actually returned it, very rare I return a book, I can usually find something in it I like! :)
Book Description
Many of the stereotypes about Scotland and the Scots contradict the modern reality. The Scotland in brochures and travel guides--castles, romance, and battle sites--means little to most scots, who live in modern urban centers. In the spring of a political and cultural Renaissance, the Scots are faced with the challenge of redefining themselves. Like the constant flow of weather and seasons, change is the only certainty in Scotland. Filled with insightful interviews and anecdotes, practical tips and useful information, Culture Shock! Scotland looks beyond the stereotypes and provides a fresh and exciting perspective on this magical northern land.

An Excelent Overview of Scotland.......2003-01-27
I read this book in April of 2002 before going to Scotland for ten days on business and pleasure. Please pardon the lack of detail in this review, since it has been a year. It gave me a good foundation for understanding many aspects of Scottish society and history. I did not want to read a simple tourist reference guide about the attractions of Scotland-I desired to know more about the people and culture. It turned out to be a terrific book was for me.
Author, Jamie Grant, touches uses his "Guide to Customs and Etiquette" to describe history, stereotypes and the nature of the people, "fitting in", doing business, arts & entertainment, food & drink, the outdoors, The Highlands, and Do's and Don't. His humor makes helps to make an already interesting book fresh.
I HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone going to Scotland who wants to get a comprehensive overview of Scotland, especially if it is their first time. I learned a lot from it.

Book Description
In The Shock of Medievalism Kathleen Biddick explores the nineteenth-century foundations of medieval studies as an academic discipline as well as certain unexamined contemporary consequences of these origins. By pairing debates over current academic trends and issues with innovative readings of medieval texts, Biddick exposes the presuppositions of the field of medieval studies and significantly shifts the objects of its historical inquiry.
Biddick describes how the discipline of medieval studies was defined by a process of isolation and exclusion—a process that not only ignored significant political and cultural issues of the nineteenth century but also removed the period from the forces of history itself. Wanting to separate themselves from popular studies of medieval culture, and valuing their own studies as scientific, nineteenth-century academics created an exclusive discipline whose structure is consistently practiced today, despite the denials of most contemporary medieval scholars. Biddick supports her argument by discussing the unavowed melancholy that medieval Christians felt for Jews and by revealing the unintentional irony of nineteenth-century medievalists’ fabrication of sentimental objects of longing (such as the “gothic peasant”). The subsequent historical distortions of this century-old sentimentality, the relevance of worker dislocation during the industrial revolution, and other topics lead to a conclusion in which Biddick considers the impact of an array of factors on current medieval studies.
Simultaneously displacing disciplinary stereotypes and altering an angle of historical inquiry, The Shock of Medievalism challenges accepted thinking even as it produces a new direction for medieval studies. This book will provoke scholars in this field and appeal to readers who are interested in how historicizing processes can affect the development of academic disciplines.

Tick Bite Fever
ASIN: 0091900344
Release Date: 2005-05-24 |
Book Description
A laugh-out-loud look at British life through the eyes of “one of the country’s funniest writers.” —The Guardian
"That Britain made me the man I am today, I would not deny. If I were less civic-minded, though, I might sue for compensation."
—David Bennun
David Bennun had lived in Africa almost his whole life until, at the age of eighteen, he went to live in Britain, the mother country — the country he had read about in Punch magazine or seen in films like Chariots of Fire. He was in for a shock. “I could not have been less prepared had I spent my life up to that point listening to thirty-year-old broadcasts of the Light Programme.”
In this timely follow-up to his critically acclaimed
Tick Bite Fever, David Bennun shows us Britain through the eyes of an outsider. With his witty turns of phrase we follow his life as a student, his brushes with Bohemia, his troubles renting and buying property, his discovery of British food and his horrors at entering the world of work. From DIY to architecture; from sport to alcohol; from transport to music and entertainment; David Bennun brilliantly deconstructs all these aspects of life so dear to the British heart.
Customer Reviews:
Tedious rant.......2007-07-27
If you think this is a funny book about England and its natives, think again. And buy Kate Fox's "Watching the English" instead. What Bennun's book is, first and foremost, is a memoir of sorts, covering the author's student years in England in the 1980s with the occasional flashback to growing up in Kenya as a white person whose apparently Jewish parents (Bennun all but hides this fact as if it were embarrassing) left South Africa because they disapproved of apartheid. Bennun went to Sussex University and then worked his way through several very hip jobs with very hip music magazines. It's amazing how someone so relatively young and with so much (former) street credibility could have turned into an old fogey so quickly. Tedious rants of the "children should be seen, not heard" sort make up one half of the book and read like a letter to The Times by some retired army general ("country is going to the dogs"). I wouldn't be surprised if Bennun votes Conservative by now. The other half of the book consists of verbose, much overstretched anecdotes about life at a the editorial office of a hip music magazine, the Brighton student scene of the 1980s etc. They may at times be funny but then, by far not as funny as the author clearly thinks. And waaaaaay too long at that. Bennun's favorite, basically only stylistic tool is being hyperbolic - which gets pretty old pretty quickly. The 300 page book is like a box of chocolates - if you have one or two, you might actually be delighted. After eating the entire box, you'll be sick.

Book Description
Already in the century before photography's emergence as a mass medium, a diverse popular visual culture had risen to challenge the British literary establishment. The bourgeois fashion for new visual media -- from prints and illustrated books to theatrical spectacles and panoramas -- rejected high Romantic concepts of original genius and the sublime in favor of mass-produced images and the thrill of realistic effects. In response, the literary elite declared the new visual media an offense to Romantic idealism. "Simulations of nature," Coleridge declared, are "loathsome" and "disgusting." The Shock of the Real offers a tour of Romantic visual culture, from the West End stage to the tourist-filled Scottish Highlands, from the panoramas of Leicester Square to the photography studios of Second Empire Paris. But in presenting the relation between word and image in the late Georgian age as a form of culture war, the author also proposes an alternative account of Romantic aesthetic ideology -- as a reaction not against the rationalism of the Enlightenment but against the visual media age being born.

Customer Reviews:
Thorough and comrehensive.......2006-08-10
This book is a perfect trade off between simplified "for-dummies" type writing that simply acquaints you with the subject matter and a comprehensive text that thoroughly covers the subject. If you are a CPA hopeful, a governmental finance professional or a political science graduate student this is the text for you. Although layout and vocabulary could be simplified for improved readability, once you become familiar with the authors' style the reading is enjoyable.
This Book is Horrible.......2006-06-18
This book is poorly written. Unless you know Non-profit accounting, it is not written so that you will learn anything. I'm assuming professors use this book because of the Smithville case and for no other reason. Honestly, I do not feel the Smithville case goes along with the book very well. The authors should have exchanged notes a little more. Unless it is required or you are already working in non-profit accounting, I would not buy this book.
Good Job.......2006-03-23
Great service. The book had breaks on the front and back cover Looks like someone drop-kicked it in shipping ... not the fault of the mailer. I thought about sending it back, but I needed it and the inside was pristine.
Puke! This book is awful! :-(.......2003-04-30
Please, no one buy this book... it will torture you like nothing else can. This book actually deserves -5 stars for how terribly written it is. The authors seem to repeat the same sentences in 5 or 6 different ways. It is poorly organized, it doesn't seem to have any real objective... a little bit of this here and a little bit of that there. Also, it is completely black and white with absolutely no pictures and very few illustrations... it will be of absolutely no help to a visual learner.
I needed this book for a governmental accounting course in college and when my bookstore wouldn't buy it back from me I wept tears. Luckily, my governmental accounting professor was really good otherwise there is no way I would have learned anything from this course. If you can possibly find some other book or maybe a newer edition would be better. The only somewhat helpful thing about this book was the City of Smithville project (CD-ROM) but even that had problems. It had a lot of technical difficulties and if you messed up an entry you pretty much had to start the project all over again. If you are doing City of Smithville, beware!
Excellent reference for government professionals.......2001-01-01
I purchased this book to study for the FGFOA exam and have found it to be an outstanding reference. The book is very readable and covers many critical areas in governmental accounting and finance. Its well worth the cost.
