Trips for two.......2001-04-16
Does your love life need a pick-me-up? Are your fires burning low? This exciting book suggests plenty of fun activities - from authors who know where to find the most romantic spots. For couples of all ages and lifestyles, this guide has something to suit every taste and budget. Competing "romantic" guidebooks are little more than a listing of expensive restaurants and hotels, but Hunter's Romantic Weekends guidebooks are for everyone. Quaint inns & delightful restaurants are included for their high romantic appeal - not their high price tag. Includes Charleston & its barrier islands, the Outer Banks (Roanoke, Hatteras and Nags Head), and Savannah, perhaps the most romantic city in the US.

Book Description
Acclaimed storyteller Nancy Roberts takes the reader on a haunted tour of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia in this engaging new collection of thirty-three ghost stories and legends.
In North Carolina, we hear of the restless spirit who troubles visitors to the Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the phantom ship that, though lost in a storm at sea, sailed into Beaufort Harbor for a final farewell. South Carolina provides the backdrop for tales such as that of the Union soldier killed at Charleston's Fort Sumter--more than a century later, a tourist is startled to discover the eerie, blue-coated figure of the soldier standing next to him. And in Georgia, we encounter ghostly pirates doomed to sail the creeks and inlets of St. Simons Island forever without rest, as well as rambunctious child spirits who roll pool balls down the hallways of a Savannah bed and breakfast, just as they did when their family lived in the house following the Civil War.
These new tales and classic legends, all collected firsthand by the author, reveal a thrilling undercurrent to some of the southern coast's most popular destinations.
Customer Reviews:
Fair but with inaccuraccies.......2005-05-31
Nancy Roberts is a good storyteller, but where 'Ghosts from the Coast' runs into trouble is with the history of the area. The story about Moon River Brewing Company ('Mystery at Moon River') is a typical example. She states that pirates walked the streets of Savannah, a statement which is more myth than fact anyway, but she goes on to claim that Edward Teach, Calico Jack Rackham, and Captain Charles Vane were once in Savannah. Well, Edward Teach (also called Blackbeard) died in 1718, and Savannah wasn't founded until 1733. Rackham was hanged in 1720, the same year Vane died. So the history of the area does not support her story.
In another instance, she talks of slaves at the Olde Harbor Inn (also in Savannah). But the structure was built in 1892, and slavery had ended with the conclusion of the Civil War in 1865. The construction with beams on River Street also wasn't built out of salvaged wood from sailing vessels, at least not in that time period, which is another claim in the book. The seaport was established enough by 1892 for enormous heart pine beams & rafters to make up the majority of building materials, and they are obviously milled expressly for that purpose.
Nancy Roberts is not a historian, but then again she doesn't claim to be one, either. She is a very good storyteller, with a whole host of books to her credit. But the historical innaccuracies will bother those readers out there with a grasp of history and a craving for a correctly-told story set in a specific time period.
Three Coasts of Ghosts.......2001-11-30
I have been a fan of Nancy Roberts for quite a few years. This latest book of hers is a great addition to her body of work. Covering ghosts in three states (coasts) North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, Nancy Roberts is her spine tingling best. Whether mean ole pirate ghosts haunting a tavern in Savannah, or a tragic lover endlessly driving his coach on the annivesary of his death, the collection of stories is truly varied. You'll want to read this book with others around you.

Adventure Guide discusses the relevant information, the history, hotels and restaurants, transportation and shopping options, but its heart belongs to the outdoors, the fishing, snorkeling, hiking, canoeing, photography, and bird-watching--the oft-neglected treasures of the U.S. South. Blair Howard provides details that are often omitted from other guides: visiting private Barrier islands, the best film to use, and successful seashell collecting tips. The city pleasures of Charleston and Savannah aren't ignored, but the guide's geared to exploring the wild dunes along with the historic districts, and the joys of the Okefenokee Swamp and The Outer Banks get top billing.

Customer Reviews:
Good book for the Outer Banks area........2000-05-16
The first third of this Sierra Club book was put to use on our Outer Banks vacation. This is a good book that covers every part of the coast, not just the barrier islands. I liked the historical and cultural background presented on each area. I expected there to be a great deal of information on the local flora and fauna since it is a Sierra Club book, and there was. It provides a wonderful listing of birds and animals to keep your eyes out for. There are also good explanations of the geology behind the coast in the introduction. I would have liked a little more information about each area (there is no info on lodging, food, etc.) and some of it was outdated. The book is appealing because it covers the entire southeastern coast, so I know I will use it in the future!

Customer Reviews:
Trees Died For This? .......2005-07-29
To give this book all of the credit that I can I will say that the directions offered at the end of each story look pretty explicit and could help someone to find the locations in question. I will also say that the last two stories in the book are pretty good even if they are very short. Otherwise, this book was a complete disappointment.
Only the last two stories contain any recent eyewitness accounts and most of these stories would barely qualify as ghost stories. Many of the stories included have nothing at all to do with ghosts but deal instead with old legends that include a bunch of cursed skulls and a body that was pickled at sea. When the stories deal with ghosts at all the author doesn't choose to deal with them much. In story after story the history of the haunt in question goes on and on and the ghost itself only gets mentioned in the final paragraph. In one instance, the ghost only gets one sentence. Fortunately, most of the stories told here can also be found in other books that do a much better job of telling the story. A blurb on the back cover refers to this book as, "light", which I would say is a very kind way of putting it.
Add to this the fact that the stories are way to short, covering twenty-five stories in just one hundred eighty-four pages and that includes several pages of photos and you really don't have much of a book. To make things even worse, the writing while sometimes very good is also often disjointed and the reader is forced to go back and read certain sections over in order to figure out what the author is talking about. Whatever it is that she is talking about however, I can assure you that it has very little to do with ghosts.
Good Stories.......2001-03-23
I found the stories in this book to be facinating. Although some could have used a bit more detail. The stories were short and easy reading but did cause you to wonder what it was that went bump in the night!
