Extremely helpful.......2002-07-25

While trying to identify some slides that I shot during June of some wildflowers in Colorado, I tried to use Peterson's Field Guide to Rocky Mountain Wildflowers. I had a very difficult time trying to identify anything. I picked up Guennel's guide (for both prairie and mountain) and within minutes I had EVERY wildflower slide identified. I'd like to see more information about each plant, such as when it indicates 'poisonous' for the plant, is it for the whole plant, root, petals, ??? But the ease in identification more than makes up for the lack of additional info. I definately recommend this book.

Excellent hiking and wildflower resource.......2000-10-28

As a botanist who loves hiking and flowers, I was thrilled to get the chance to "field test" this wonderful guide to Colorado's high mountains. It is organized by elevation so you can follow spring up higher as summer progresses. It clearly states the hike length, the terrain, the location, gives directions AND best of all - lists what flowers you will see! I found this book to be an extraordinary guide to the region and it helped me tailor my vacation and plan my hikes. The photos of the mountain scenery were very good and the close ups of the flowers were terrific. I think I actually bumped into the author on a hike (I recognized her from the photo in the back!). Terrific book!

Lovely Hikes.......2003-11-05

Most of the hikes in this book are simple hikes as well, so it is great if you have children with you. The book also serves as a reference guide for the different flowers you will see on your hike. The book shows the best time of year to hike the particular trails in correspondence with when the flowers are in bloom. Nice book to have on hand.

pretty pictures, pretty words.......2003-12-29

I'd expected a series of wildflower pictures, scientific names and other factoids in these pages. I was pleasantly surprised to find each picture accompanied by a well-matched poem. The combination of good photography and verse makes this a very enjoyable work, exercising different areas of the reader's brain.

Excellent Introduction for new wildflower enthusiasts.......1998-04-12

This small book provides attractive color pictures of every wildflower that it covers. The first time or sometime enthusiast will enjoy this book much more than the more broadly focused Jaeger and Munz classics that have fewer color plates and devote most of their coverage to the Mohave Desert. 1998 has been an extraordinary spring wildflower year. I have attempted to use all three books and found that my success with this one was such that I was able to find and identify about 3/4 of the flowers in the book just from my trips to Borrego Springs, Mecca Road (Box Canyon), Joshua Tree and the Colorado River.

This book is filled with information on flowers and where they grow and the bloom times. The clear close up pictures of the flowers and leaves make it easier to identify them when I'm on hikes. And, the book is small and easy to carry in most pockets.

Not Very Helpful Insight.......2003-03-28

If you are looking for a guidebook that packs in lots of information alongside a ton of color pictures, this would be the one. It has an extensive history section and details the features of all of the major hotels and attractions. Take note that it is produced by the Discovery Channel, because it reads much like the channel's documentaries. That is the guide's downfall. While it is tall on info, it is horrible short on critique. It does not rate the hotels, restaurants, or attractions. If you want a really helpful guidebook, with lots of tips and advice, check out "The Unofficial Guide". The Insight Guide is a good secondary guidebook through which to read up on general Las Vegas info. Just don't make this one the first or only guide you buy about the city if you really want some insight.

The remarkable thing about Marc Umile's Bush Unplugged is that it accessible to people from all parts of the political spectrum. Umile's style is conversational, the information easily absorbed. I had fun reading this book even as I shuddered at the implications of the myriad undemocratic, self serving, and downright immoral activities of the folks currently administering The People's affairs. We should ALL read Bush Unplugged - NOW - BEFORE NOVEMBER 2nd!

fresh, independent research lifts a curtain of secrecy.......2004-08-27

My Democrat friend begged me to read one chapter, 'just this one chapter' she said. I was bitten by the information, by Mr. Umile's straight-forward writing style and read the entire book.
His voice is fresh, he's a political independent who tracked down incredible information on Mr. Bush, his family and regime; how can I ignore the facts. Just the facts.
Read this and weep my fellow Republicans.

The guy is neither compassionate nor conservative.......2004-08-23

If you have wondered where this administration came from, Marc Umile does a great job of answering that question. He makes it abundantly clear--with compelling arguments and persuasive evidence--that George W. Bush is neither compassionate nor conservative. It brings to mind the witticism about the meaning of "compassionate conservative": they still won't help you, but they feel really bad about it! Except this guy doesn't feel a thing. Not a thing.

As you read this book, think about the principles that have defined traditional Republicanism: a commitment to balanced budgets, Constitutional government, a non-interventionist foreign policy, and keeping the government out of our personal lives. This administration--with its massive federal deficits, its promotion of the Patriot Act, its aggressive wars abroad, and its intrusion into the most intimate aspects of our privacy-- violates all four of those principles.

Mussolini observed that "fascism" could be defined as corporatism, since it represents the merger of big business with big government, a coalition characterized by rampant nationalism and aggressive militarism. The leader is identified with the state, which makes criticism of the leader unpatriotic or even treasonous. Ask yourself where we find ourselves at the beginning of this new millenium. As you will discover here, the situation is more than a little frightening.

Bush Unplugged by Marc Umile.......2004-07-29

I'm an avid reader but I tend to focus my attention on the likes of John Grisham and James Patterson. I've never read a political book in my life because I have no interest in,or clue about politics. For this very reason a friend of mine insisted that I read Bush Unplugged and I am so glad I finally took the literary political plunge. I was riveted from the first page,and throughout the book I could not believe what I was reading.I was blown away by what I did not know about the president and his cronies and how these stories are not reported on the evening news.Thanks to MR. Umile's book I feel like my eyes are open and I should spend more time reading about the money and power issues that drive our political figures.I had no clue and always put my trust in our leaders.What a fool I've been. Umile calls himself a "research junkie."I call him a brilliant public servant who opened my eyes.
