Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of techniques in genetic engineering.......2001-04-02

This book is a "wet" approach to genetic engineering and outlines for the reader modern laboratory techniques in cloning and gene sequencing. It is well suited for a mathematician or an aspiring bioinformatics specialist who needs an overview of the experimental side of genetic engineering. The treatment is very detailed and a lot is covered given the size of the book, but it is well written and an interesting read. It does require a fair amount of background in biochemistry but even readers without such a background can follow the dialog if close attention is paid to the definitions. A little elementary physics background is required in the discussion on gel electrophoresis, and in the discussion on biolistic transformations with a particle gun. For the mathematician/bioinformaticist the most useful chapters will be the chapters on the making and screening libraries. The validation of gene sequence data is an important but tedious exercise and these chapters introduce the reader to what must lie ahead if such activities are pursued. Even if read leisurely the book is fascinating and one takes away a deeper appreciation of the tools and techniques used in this new century of biology.

    Book Description

Peter E. Vaillancourt presents a collection of popular and emerging methodologies that take advantage of E. coli's ability to quickly and inexpensively express recombinant proteins. The authors focus on two areas of interest: the use of E. coli vectors and strains for production of pure, functional protein, and the use of E. coli as host for the functional screening of large collections of proteins and peptides. Among the cutting-edge techniques demonstrated are those for rapid high-level expression and purification of soluble and functional recombinant protein and those essential to functional genomics, proteomics, and protein engineering.

I work and travel to Miami. I think the book
is a good guide but is insulting to adults.
In the night life section, it is o.k. to be gay
or lesbian but when you are an older adult the
author will dog you and tell you that it is past
your bed time for a good Latin music club. Hey,
                    be nice and "inclusive."

Well, not really, but i've lived in south florida for 13 years and this book is a must have for anyone who lives down here or is thinking about visiting. Everyone thinks they have a true grasp of the miami scene, but this author actually does.

Tourism generates over {$$$$} billion annually for the Florida economy, which is more than twice the entire GNP for Cuba. That is why there is a fierce fight for the Florida travel guide market. Frommer's is one of the best guides available.

This South Florida guide is somewhat more expanded than "Frommer's Florida" Guide (see my review). If you are going to visit just MIAMI, the EVERGLADES, PALM BEACH, FT. LAUDERDALE or the KEYS, then you will find this guide more compact, lighter and a bit cheaper.

The same great writing style that is in the Frommer's state guide is found in this more compact companion. The accommodation and dining recommendations are reliable and on the money. This guide lists the best restaurants that South Florida has to offer. A lodging and restaurant index would be a definite plus for this guide. As it stands now, if you have a restaurant you want to look up, you have to go through all the listings in the city you are in until you stumble across the name you seek or miss seeing it completely.

The rating system is labored and difficult to understand. The explanation of the "new star rating system" is buried in the book and not indexed. It was by quirk that I found it. Strange.

The Internet web site addresses provided for hotels could be more comprehensive considering that this is a 2003 guide. In today's world of "connectivity" you can visit the hotel sites and see the accommodations and rates prior to making reservations. And, website/email addresses are restricted to the lodging listings even though many of the restaurants now have their own websites with photos and menus and email to makes reservations.

However, there are two significant areas in this guide that could use improvement: maps and hotels/restaurants.

Regarding the maps: the maps in the guide are lackluster. More and better maps would greatly help the user.

What put this guide on top of the competing guides is the clear and enjoyable writing style of the review. The introductions of the regional areas are the best of the guides I reviewed. You will do well if you have to chose just one South Florida guide and you select Frommer's.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Guidebook Ever!.......2002-11-01

This is probably the best guidebook I ever read. The author has a really good writing style and it is genuinely interesting and fun to read (not that I'm suggesting you pick it over Fitzgerald or anything, just that it's a really well-written book). Her restaurant reviews are really excellent--just reading some of them made me start to drool. And while many of the restaurant listings are for priceyish places, she does list some great, fun, authentic, and in some cases, way off the beaten track yummy places to try. I trust her opinion completely!

This is a really thorough guidebook, with good and honest hotel listings (one of the only people to vocalize what we all know--the Delano IS overrated!) and a great chapter on what to do and see if you want to do and see more than just the beaches of South Florida. The Miami coverage is awesome-- good tips on shopping, a really knowledgeable chapter on nighlife, and more.

The Everglades chapter has a hilarious essay about how the author was reluctant to go the first time, and the coverage of the Keys, Palm Beaches, Boca, etc. are just as good. I usually expect a Frommer's guidebook to be a bit stuffier than this, but as soon as I read the intro, I knew I had to try this book, and I'm so happy I did. You will be too. It rocks!

5 out of 5 stars South Florida exposed.......2002-09-28

Wow. I used to think that South Florida just meant Miami and palm trees. This book proved to me and my husband that South Florida is much, much more. I got the book on a bet with my husband, who insisted that So Flo was a lot of fun and not just laying out at a pool kind of fun. This book proved me wrong and I lost the bet, but boy was I glad to be a loser in this wager! This book is a must have for anyone who thinks that a trip to Florida can be hot and boring. Quite the contrary!! Thanks, Frommer's. We'll be back to So Flo very soon.

                    Book Description

No president in American history has suffered a stranger fate at the hands of posterity than Theodore Roosevelt. The world leader who achieved international recognition and popularity in his own time as a man of peace (he was one of only two presidents awarded the Nobel Peace Prize) is submerged in the image of the Rough Rider, the “Bully” fighter, whose enthusiasm for a fight or a hunt was unrestrained by humanitarian or other concerns. The kindest criticism of Roosevelt holds that by good luck and good advice he was able to avoid disaster; the unkindest that he was an international adventurer who posturing misled may an admirer. Moreover, the apparent paradox implicit in his famous slogan, “Speak softly and carry a big stick,” has confused scholar and layman alike, and that confusion has been abetted by the seemingly contradictory impulses of his personality.

Frederick W. Marks III, drawing upon archival and manuscript materials in five countries, as well as numerous primary and secondary sources, rebuts, point by pint, the myths and misconceptions that have given rise to this distorted and confused image. Arguing that Roosevelt can be understood only in the context of his time and that the whole of his diplomatic record provides the key to understanding its individual parts, he reconstructs in careful detail the man, his time, and his record, and, in so doing, allows us to see Theodore Roosevelt whole.

Given the received opinion concerning the man and his presidency and the nature of contemporary political attitudes, Mark’s interpretation of Roosevelt’s conduct of foreign affairs will undoubtedly prove highly controversial, yet his argument, buttressed as it is by a wealth of source material, deserves serious consideration by those concerned not only with the accuracy of historical judgment but also with the successful conduct of foreign relations.

                    4 out of 5 stars A Thematic Study.......2004-05-07

"Velvet On Iron" is a study of the diplomacy of Theodore Roosevelt, organized by themes, rather than by events. The essays cover TR in the context of his times, consider the credibility of his foreign policy as well as the role of morality in its formulation, contrast his reality with his myth and evaluate the influence of his cosmopolitan background on his diplomacy.

This book touches on specific incidents, such as the Algeciras and Portsmouth Conferences and the Alaskan boundary and Venezuelan crises, only in the context of what they reveal about the character trait of TR which is the subject of the particular essay.

This relatively short book stimulates thought about TR's character and his management of foreign policy. I recommend it for the serious student of TR, but only after a study his life through other sources.

                        Book Description

In 1991, Phan, an engineer, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease at the early age of 39. Here he movingly chronicles the physical and emotional effects the disease has had on his life since the early diagnosis. He briefly discusses Parkinson's medical and surgical treatment, and research progress, but the strength of the book is the account of his personal struggle with disease, as its progressive effects on his body is vividly detailed. Phan's realistic acceptance and resistance to limitations, as well as his appreciation of life, in spite of disability, is inspiring. Phan offers a wonderful view for patients and families.
