Customer Reviews:
An excellent look at the field.......2007-07-14
This is a superb look at the nitty-gritty world of selling. Although the author does fill it with case studies, they are all useful and thought-provoking. My favorite bit of advice concerns what happens to all top salespeople: they get their territory cut. Why? To keep them from getting complacent, of course.
succinct and to the point.......2007-06-21
Joe has gone out of his way to cut to the chase. There is no self esteem building and you can do it rah rah rather Joe's frank honest and what it takes to stay on top, remain on top and what to do when you are caught in a no win situation. As an MBA this type of book should be a mandatory read but the reality of tenured professors that are effectively running a union job do not understand how duplicitous and unethically the real business world can be. I finish this book in a few hours and the insight will last me a career. It is also refreshing from the standpoint that Joe has a soul and is interested in seeing the world and some great sales jobs he has had launched that opportunity. If you surf this book is especially cool(which I do and I can relate to the author on many levels.) Another reviewer was turned off by some profanity of which I do not remember so don't focus on issues of crass.
A must read for B-school graduates and MBAs.......2007-02-14
I went to B-School, got my MBA, and gained valuable education on the theory and practice of managing a successful business. What I was disappointed by, were the unexamined assumptions around the "corporate dream", which I found pervasive at all levels of the curriculum. Too complex to go into here, but essentially...
Most business schools are in the business of selling the corporate dream and training future managers in the arts of profit maximization, organizational efficiency, competitive advantage, and market penetration. Rarely do they ever address the human reality of corporate downsizing, except as economic data points relevent to the afore mentioned topics.
The Sales Adventure Guide is a practical manual on how to cut through the corporate BS, understand the true meaning behind management-speak, and know how to cover your butt when your job is on the line, through no fault of your own. It uncovers the tactics, often unethical and sometimes illegal, that HR and upper management will use to make you go away, meekly, without costing the company a penny.
The Sales Adventure Guide will help you probe underneath the company's glossy exterior and public face, by showing you how you can ask the right questions and find out important information about the organization you will be contracting your time to.
This book will teach you how to protect yourself, play the corporate game with finesse, and enjoy your life, rather than feel browbeaten at the company's ingratitude towards the days, months, years of your life you gave them - which you will never, ever get back.
Corporate loyalty is a myth, most companies will lay you off without a second thought. Read this book, understand that we are all contractors now.
Wish this came out when I starting selling for the man........2006-03-21
Anybody. I repeat anybody who sells, or wants to become a sales person, has to read this book. This book will keep you in the "game" longer, by playing corporate business model to your advantage. All successful companies value their sales force. But most Sales Managers make you feel like a zero. By reading this book you can change that number and pave a brighter future. Read and Prosper.
Must have for Sales etc....Good read!!!!.......2006-03-09
This book is a "must have" for the new graduate or anyone who is considering a career or taking on an adventure in sales.
Finally, a fun-to-read book on sales with valuable and positive insights on getting-in, finding the right company, and getting-out when your company becomes the "wrong company."
Joe T has real-life examples and experiences that show you how to work for yourself and enjoy the adventure. He teaches you what to expect in sales and get the most out of your job and keep your sanity. Rather than providing, rehashed "supposedly new", methods of achieving one time sales success, this book provides a "big picture guide" that helps a salesperson's lifelong career. HIGHLY ENTERTAINING AND RECOMMENDED!!!

You Need THis.......2006-10-16
Pocket Adventures' Costa Rica from Hunter Travel Guides by Bruce and June Conord: Having gone to Costa Rica before having this book, we wished we had used this guide before we went the first time, and it makes us want to return soon! Even though we had aleady experienced some of the places and activities we found described in this book, it gave us greater insights that we had missed in the visit. This enriched the trip we had already taken, which is most unusual for a travel guide. The books outlines the twenty top spots in Costa RIca and has divisions by areas of the country. The first half of the book tells about the eating and culture of what to see in the capital city San Jose, and the second half gives specifics about the other sections of the country, telling what to see and do and where to stay and eat. Whatever your specific interests and focus for your trip, you'll find where you need to make your reservations. There are even discussions of cosmetic surgery and legal prostitution. So whether you have already been to Costa RIca or plan to go or just want to learn about the Costa Rica, this book is a wonderful guide and worth buying
Skip this book!.......2005-12-30
When one reads a "Guide" Book, one should not have to read nearly 100 pages to find something negative; After all, it is a foreign country and what to avoid is actually more beneficial than the "Oh,it is all wonderful" descriptions. There is very little mention of the different regions; However there is extensive information on every lodging place in the country. How this has received 4.5 stars is certainly a mystery to me. Evidently from reading "Trip Advisors" on the internet; everyone in Costa Rica has the Lonely Planet guide on Costa Rica!
A great city walk in an adventure guide!.......2005-03-26
I took off a point for the pedestrian writing and the sub-standard photos. (The numerous quotes struck me as tangential, but I really liked the design ephemera, including the original luggage tag from Hotel Europa, CR's oldest hotel, a nice touch!) Now, on to the good stuff:
First off, Bruce & June Conord's "alternative accomodations" was imaginative and indispensable for me, and of course, in the true spirit of "adventure." Secondly, of all the rough-and-tumble excursions they present, my favorite was their walking tour of historical San José. On foot is really the only way to see Costa Rica's one and only capital city.
I would agree with a previous reviewer concerning the low-quality pictures. But to be fair, that is not what this exhaustively-detailed book is all about. Fortunately, I also bought the book Costa Rica: The Last Country the Gods Made, a luscious and amply photographed book that takes you on an envious visual tour of many of the places the Conords discuss.
For example, Last Country features 9 (much better) pictures of downtown San José, one in full two-page glorious panorama. In addition, the Conords cover Irazú Volcano in one page (with a few mentions elsewhere), while Last Country has 2 VERY unusal views of Irazú: page 93 pictures the description of the sloping farmlands benefiting from Irazú's volcanic soil as described on page 6; and page 16 pictures something that no other guide book I've ever read on Costa Rica mentions-wild horses roaming the calderas of the volcano!
As for my city-centricity, I further recommend On the Plaza: The Politics of Public Space and Culture by Setha Low, about the social implications of San José's two city squares, the Parque Central and the Plaza de la Cultura, which turns out to be more on topic than you think.
All 3 books are delightful for anyone who plans to travel to any of the rich coast's storied country sides in pages or in person!
Great if you really want to get away.......2005-01-26
My fiancee and I went to Costa Rica and wanted to get away from everything. This book led us to Uvita de Osa (not even mentioned in other books). This book gave us great local information and helped us plan our vacation form start to finish.
Hint: If you are travelling cheap and want a hand getting started in Costa Rica, call John at Safe Passage (www.costaricabustickets.com). You won't regret it!
Not worth the space in my suitcase.......2005-01-06
This was 1 of 3 books I bought for a trip to Costa Rica and I can't say I relied on it for information at any point. Every time I opened the book to find a hotel or restaurant or choose the next destination, I closed it in frustration. I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't 2 other guides which I found to have more comprehensive information regarding the options of where to eat, sleep and adventure.
A previous reviewer was correct in the assessment that the book is not all whitewater and rappeling, although there are tons of adventures to experience there and basic information about which of those activities to do and where to find them can be MORE easily found in other books or by speaking to someone at your hotel.
After I bought my souveniers and such, I don't know why I crammed the book back in my bag.

Costa Rica is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Central America, and for good reason: a stable government and progressive conservation policies make this little jewel of a country a pleasure to explore. For anyone considering a trip to Costa Rica, Adventure Guide to Costa Rica is an ideal resource and guide. One third of the book is dedicated to Costa Rica's rich history, culture, economy, and ecology, as well as issues important to travelers such as food, recreation, accommodations, and safety. The rest of the book is dedicated to the parks and the best places to snorkel, dive, white-water raft, hike, and camp. For a truly comprehensive guide to Costa Rica's flora, fauna, and recreational opportunities, Adventure Guide to Costa Rica is a great bet.
Customer Reviews:
This is an ADVENTURE guide, not a hotel guide.......2004-03-13
This is not a "hotel" guide and is not meant to be!
This is a great ADVENTURE guide! Especially valuable to first-time travelers to Costa Rica and Spanish-language learners.
This is more of a background book, with sections on the climate, the history, festivals and events, flora and fauna, sports and recreation, the people, the land, the economy, and the government.
Not Good.......1999-12-06
This was my families third trip to Costa Rica, we found this book interesting, but not useful. The information on prices and hotels is old. I certainly would like to know that last time the writer actually vistit the country. His observations or opinions of quality of hotels certainly should be questioned. As well, as his ability to judge the communities. It seems like the writer has not been to Costa Rica in a long time. That goodnes we have traveled the country three times, each time with new guide book, this time, just a bad choice. Thought that anybody interested in traveling to Costa Rica should know, this is a good reference for background, but do not count on it for accurate descriptions of hotels or the communities.
Good adventure information.......1999-07-01
This book had excellent information in it, but some of the formating is hard to understand. Also, it is vague in where hotels are located at and without a lot of maps in the book it's hard to figure out where different places are in reference to other places. Maybe, Adventure guide implies that it is focuses mostly on adventure, but I think that budget hotels ($10 and Under) are an adventure in themselves, when I plan a trip I want some more information about what the budget hotel consists of ( Little things that give it charm, hot water, cleanliness, ect..) Overall good information about the culture and osa pennisula.
Great Book!.......1999-06-21
Hi, I am working at ILISA, Spanish Language Institute in San Jose, Costa Rica and I just want to let you know that this book helps our students a lot by making travel plans and by getting their way around in Costa Rica. Thanks!
Book Description
With Adventures in Nature: Costa Rica, you'll get top choices instead of a long, comprehensive list that leaves you wondering which way to turn for environmentally friendly adventure. You'll find a wide variety of accommodation and dining options, along with lots of maps that make it easy to organize your trip and locate where you want to go once you arrive in Costa Rica. Plus, you'll get an explanation of the country's new "green seal" for tourist-related businesses, with details on how to find out which hotels and private reserves have earned it.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent guide.......2006-08-16
It's been many years since we traveled to Costa Rica, but the nature preserves we remember best are well described in this current, and useful guide.
We especially recommend the inns at Monteverdi--a long, five hour drive up a dusty, mountain road, and worth every second, every pothole and every rut--and Drake Bay at the amazing reserve in Corcovado.
From all appearances, all the other highlights of a nature adventure in Costa Rica was well represented here, as well. It's the vacation of a lifetime, which you will remember for a lifetime. And this book is one of the better places to look for the little gems in that little gem of a country.
one of the two best.......2004-01-31
This book along with the coffee-table tome "Costa Rica : The Last Country the Gods Made" should be owned by anyone who loves Costa Rica, even if they think they despise natural history monologues as too narrow in their scope of a country. This book's spirit is undeniable.
The best book for nature lovers.......2003-05-16
Ree Strange Sheck does an excellent job describing lodges, locations, activities, and nature. I work in nature travel and use this book often. I highly recommend it for anyone planning a trip to Costa Rica who is interested in experiencing the beauty of this amazing country.
Natural History Tourism At Its Best.......1999-09-18
Costa Rica has it all--volcanoes, rainforests, beaches, cosmopolitan cities, whitewater rivers, and a rich tapestry of cultures--and so does this guidebook. Ree Sheck has done a terrific job of focusing on what's best about this amazing country, particularly with respect to its natural history, parks, and wildlife. There's a lot of information about hotels, restaurants, services, and transportation -- certainly enough for any traveler -- but where this guidebook really shines is in its description of the land, the people, and the natural resources of Costa Rica. I can't recommend it highly enough. Buy a copy and go!
Great Book!.......1999-06-25

With a special focus on ecotourism, the authors of The New Key to Costa Rica help you discover the diversity of this colorful country's remarkable flora and fauna (from tree ferns to sloths) and learn ways you can contribute to efforts to preserve it. A well-researched sustainability rating highlights lodgings that are active in protecting an environmental, economic, and cultural balance.
The book offers complete coverage of sights, lodging, dining, and outdoor adventures, including wildlife viewing, parks and reserves, surfing, fishing, horseback riding, and diving. --Kathryn True
Book Description
This is the classic guide to Costa Rica that blazed the trail for adventure travel. This guide was not written by a team of "experts" nor by a writer who has 10 different guides to 10 different locations. It is written by two women who have a deep understanding, love and concern for Costa Rica. It offers the insights and hints that only a local can pass along. The best elements of a travel guide, including hotel and restaurant reviews, are combined with ecotourism information. The most popular areas are covered in detail, yet areas of pristine wilderness are not neglected - the book extensively surveys the country's wildlife. Two foldout color maps of the country and capital city, and complete details on outdoor adventures are included. "This book takes absolutely no shortcuts." - San Diego Union-Tribune; "Brings the traveler closer to the local culture." - San Antonio Express-News.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for CR relocators!.......2007-05-14
We have been to CR for a visit and are now considering the BIG move. This book covers every you would need to know and surprises you with information you didn't think of. We have even shared this information with our family that has lived there for 5 years and it has helped them. It also gave a brief but interesting history of Costa Rica as well as current government, economics and culture. Does a good job of explaining the cultural differences which are most important to the person considering a move anywhere! One thing I might stress... the author states several times that English is taught in the schools. This might lead you to believe that you will have little problem with communication. In our trip last year to the Central Valley and the Pacific Coast we did not meet one person that understood us or could speak to us in English. I highly advise, begin you Spanish Lessons before your anticipated trip!
Great Guide!.......2007-03-23
This guide was the better of the two I bought....and the other one was Fodor's. New Key was accurate, impartial, and covered lots of different kinds of stuff....
Invaluable - ultra-reliable eco-tourism guide.......2007-03-06
I used this book, and the community-based eco-tourism agency recommended in this book, to plan a two-week trip. I was alone, female, and non-Spanish speaking. I had the time of my life. Everything went off without a hitch. Great people, waterfalls, food, views, and adventures galore. Thanks to the author. None of the other guidebooks came close to the insight and accuracy of this guide.
Excellent.......2006-11-17
[...]The 18th edition of New Key to Costa Rica improves upon a veritable classic.
2006 marks the 30th anniversary of the guidebook which guides travelers toward
tasteful family-run lodgings and communities that are actively protecting the rural environment.
Written in a style that feels like a conversation with a travel guide, the New Key provides countless insights about the culture, the environment and the people of Costa Rica.
First authored by Jane Wallace, the book was then updated by her daughter Beatrice Blake and Anne Becher. Beatrice prepared this edition alone, but it is easy to see that the text has been guided by a number of joyful souls.
In 1992 this book was the first guidebook to use a green-rating system. In this edition, the rating system is downplayed in favor of focusing on community efforts.
Focusing on family farm visits allows Blake to show travelers the connections among organic agriculture, appropriate energy technology and diverse ecosystems. She writes: "By visiting these communities, not only will you meet some lovely people, but you will be inspired by their ability to put innovative principles into practice."
For travelers wishing to experience tropical nature, there is no better immersion than visiting the communities that are at the forefront of conservation.
Exciting adventure sports are not omitted. One of the highlights of the book is a review of the country's best canopy tours. Additional "adventure reports" showcase innovative efforts throughout the country.
Among the informative sidebars are capsule reviews of the Talamanca Ecotourism Network, the Sarapiquí Conservation Learning Center and turtle watching at Ostional Wildlife Refuge.
New Key to Costa Rica covers all the bases - from the practical details of deciding when and where to go to tips on learning Spanish and volunteer vacations. For those seeking an eco trip, this book is a must.
This is it, the real thing.......2006-04-25
Absolutely the best of the four (you can guess the other three) books we took, because this on focuses on the off-beat and the green. Use it to locate the indepth Costa Rica, the one that gets you away from everyone else and makes you feel happy about it.

Book Description
Big & Tall Chronicles is a revealing and powerful, yet surprisingly comical account of Gary Marino's lifelong battle with obesity. It details how growing up overweight in America negatively affects an individual. Anecdotes demonstrate how Mr. Marino's weight problem put him in situations or "misadventures" that he normally would not have experienced, and offers a brutally honest look into the self-destructive mindset that modern day food addicts go through, and the frustrations and downfalls that occur while trying to live a normal life.
The passionate soul-searching that ultimately pushed Marino's inner button and led him to a healing path resonates with a bittersweet familiarity for anyone recovering from an addictive disorder. Marino shares the knowledge and insights he has gained with the help of his "Dream Team" of experts, including a sports medicine specialist, a nutritionist, a personal trainer, and a therapist specializing in weight-loss issues.
Truthful, educational and soul baring with a humorous undercurrent,
Big & Tall Chronicles may very well be the breakthrough personal journey and addiction recovery book millions of Americans have been waiting for...to dig deep into themselves and fix themselves once and for all.
