People from all corners of the world involved in government, business and culture come into contact with Dutch colleagues and counterparts, either in the Netherlands or in their own countries. No matter whether you are coming to the Netherlands for a business trip or to work here for a while, or have regular contact with Dutch people in your own country, being prepared for Dutch culture will make your working and social contacts more effective and therefore more satisfactory.

Like the very successful first edition published in 1997, and the updated version published in 2001, this 14th revised and updated edition of Dealing with the Dutch focuses on Dutch values and norms, but it also takes into account the economic, social and cultural changes the Netherlands is undergoing. Many new quotes by people from all over the world who have already â€~dealt with the Dutch’ have also been added.

5 out of 5 stars most informative read.......2004-11-03

This book is clear and concise. The format makes it very easy to read from cover to cover or to select a couple of chapters. I have lived in the Netherlands for 10yrs and enjoyed it immensely. I have also sent the book to my relatives in the UK and they found it an enlightening read. I highly recommend it to anyone planning a stay in the Netherlands.

Of all the travel books about The Netherlands that I used in the 10 years of living there, this was the best. It was up-to-date, concise and informative. It makes a great gift for anyone planning a trip to the Netherlands and has useful information for locals and travellers alike. The size of the book makes for easy carring around.

3 out of 5 stars Very basic overview.......2004-10-16

I'm moving to the Netherlands next month. I bought this book as I had one from this series when I moved to Kuala Lumpur - that book was invaluable. This one hasn't the same kind of info I had hoped for. The information presented here is interesting and helpful, but not what I was looking for. I've ordered "The Holland Handbook" in hopes of finding the info I need.

              5 out of 5 stars A good reference.......2004-06-30

I have a native dutch bf. As I want to know more about the culture in Netherlands, I bought this book. The author didn't have any bias descriptions. What he wrote are more or less the same as the real situations. I think he really did a good job.

5 out of 5 stars brief, informative, comprehensive, practical.......2000-11-16

I have lived in The Netherlands for only four months. I have looked at several sources of information about the country: its culture, customs, language, history, climate, geography, tourist attractions etc.. I found Mr. Janin's brief (167pp) volume to have been very well-done. I believe his 25 years as a U.S. diplomat (but not in The Netherlands) have taught him what an outsider needs, to begin to understand a culture. He combines the personal experience of others--in this case, his Dutch wife, her family and many of their friends and acquaintances--with pofessional writings. He even includes an 18-item english-language reading list. The range of topics covered is broad--geography, climate, history, language, customs, principal attractions, even a "culture-quiz" to help the reader understand what s/he has learned about the culture at the end of the book. The coverage is also balanced: he includes both pluses (egs.respect for others, language ability) and minuses (egs.drug use, immigrants and asylum seekers). He readily recognizes that, however helpful it might be to understanding the society, the Dutch view of themselves--which he capsulizes--is not likely to be objective. I wish he had included information on regional differences in the Dutch language, customs and attitudes. But, that minor quibble aside, I think Mr. Janin's goal in writing this small book ("to help [the reader] become [a] well-briefed foreigner." (p.10)) has been achieved in an admirable fashion. I think it is an informative, easy-to-read--even entertaining--book that is well worth reading.

              Book Description

The Netherlands is a thriving transportation hub for Europe, and a booming center for banking and energy sectors, and other innovative industries. Thousands of expatriate executives and their families are transferred to Holland annually; and hundreds of thousands of visitors come on business.

People from all corners of the globe come into contact with Dutch colleagues and contacts, both in the Netherlands and in their own countries. They all have to "deal with the Dutch," and although the Dutch are becoming more and more cosmopolitan, aspects of their character and behavior still surprise many people.

For instance, the directness of the Dutch, their critical attitudes, and sometimes slow decision-making processes are some of the characteristics that foreigners notice immediately, and may find frustrating. While the Dutch may drive a hard bargain, once agreement has been reached, their word is their bond. They are also noted for their thoroughness, and their energy and ingenuity in discovering and exploiting new business opportunities.

Expatriates working in the Netherlands point out that it is the underlying values and norms of the Dutch that puzzle them most and sometimes irritate them.

For anyone traveling to the Netherlands on business, to live and work in the country, or for anyone who may have regular contact with the Dutch abroad, this unique book - written by a Dutch author - will ensure more effective and enjoyable business and social relations.

This new edition both follows the first in covering Dutch values and norms, and presents an up-dated picture of the latest economic, social and cultural changes in the country.

5 out of 5 stars a mirror for Dutch abroad.......2004-06-28

Most books on cultural stereotypes try to be funny. Often jokes work only for those already in the know, or worse, they are misleading to those who aren't.
Aimed at expats and others working with the Dutch, Mr Vossestein has written a serious book. The goal is to inform, not to get cheap laughs (though many of the anecdotes from foreigners interacting with the Dutch are quite entertaining).
Perhaps the greatest value of this book is as a mirror for Dutch travelling abroad. After all, understanding other people's culture starts with understanding your own. This book should be compulsory reading for all Dutch expats.

This is the best introduction to Dutch business culture available. It is uncluttered, and makes connections between different aspects of Dutch behaviour to develop a broad picture suitable for business people from any background.

As a Dutch-American cross-cultural trainer I have read the gamut of literature dealing with this subject. Mr. Vossestein's 'Dealing with the Dutch' is the most concise, clearly written book on the subject. The book's non-judgemental approach gives future immigrants to the Netherlands a thorough understanding of and a simple guide line to life in this fascinating land by the sea.

                  4 out of 5 stars Helpful.......2007-01-09

I read this book before a recent trip to Holland to meet my boyfriends' family. It was really helpful. It provided some basic insights into Dutch culture that differ from American culture. After the 10 day visit, I feel as if the book helped me understand the behavior of the Dutch people I met. My only complaint would be the book's claim that the Dutch are extremely friendly. This is only partially true. They are incredibly warm and welcoming if you are introduced to them by another Dutch citizen. Random people on the streets were really not welcoming or helpful at all.

4 out of 5 stars Good book on life in the Netherlands.......2006-11-07

This series of books is so fabulous if you want to get to know the country you are visiting, not only if you want to move there but also if you just love to learn more than the surface of a country on your two week vacation. Great to read before and after a visit to the Netherlands. I learnt so much in this book that would have taken me months, years to learn by actually being in the country. Excellent resource.

4 out of 5 stars What about the Belgian coast?.......2003-09-06

This book has pleasantly surprised me by its accurateness and humor. The fact that the author was married to a Belgian was crucial in writing this book, although I must admit that he also did an enormous amount of work on the research of the history.
This book would have received a 5-star rating if he hadn't so grossly neglected a very important area: the 67 km long coast line. The West-Flemish people are a breed on their own and have a myriad of customs and culture that decidedly differs from the inland. Considering the fact that the coast population in towns like Knokke are multiplied by 10 during the summer season, should give you an inkling of the diversity these people are accustomed to. Dialects are already different in pronunciation and colloqualisms in the next town of 3-5 km apart. The Belgian coast is responsible for the greatest income of the country, and the Flemish workers (in 't zwart) are some of the most industrious people around. If the royal family found the coast important enough to own several house along it, it certainly deserves more merit in this book. It is very apparent that the author's influence was dominated by his Brussels wife. Even some of the flemish words are not pronounced correctly or spelled right because of this inland influence (i.e.:ballekes, which is a typical non-West-Flemish word. the High Flemish (Dutch) term is much closer to the West Flemish "balletjes")
A lot of the customs and habits only reflect a small part of the Belgian people, usually the ones in big cities.
Still, buy the book, you'll learn more than you evfer want to know about this quaint country. Just make sure that when you visit it, make time away from all the museums and visit the flatlands of West-Flanders, and you'll come away with a whole lot more.

5 out of 5 stars True to life!.......2003-04-21

When reading this book I was really surprised by its accuracy and liveliness. The author succeeds in putting everything I would like to tell my non-Belgian friends in an extremely readable book (I finished it in one night). The point of view of the author is unique in the sense that he is a foreigner (British) but is married to a Belgian and has been living there long enough to know the small things of life. I would recommend this book to anybody remotely interested in Belgium. For those that are not, I can assure you that your interest will be certainly piqued by reading this book. For me this book is a great gift for a friend interested in my country.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of fun.......2003-01-27

As Belgian myself it was funny read this book which is humorous but too much accurate about many things that we know is true in our people but surprised to read in a book!
Book is a very nice introduction to my country for people coming to live here and know about, but don't worry - not all the drivers are so bad and dangerous!

5 out of 5 stars Never visited, but feel like I have.......2002-02-17

Mark Elliott has written a very entertaining - and if my Belgian friends are to be believed - accurate account of Belgian culture. Not a classic guidebook with lists of places to visit and restaurants to patronize, this book truly lives up to its title. The book contains a great deal of humor which makes the Belgians come alive for the reader. The book has definitely made me put Belgium on my list of places I wish to visit.

New York Post columnist John Podhoretz has equal amounts of love for George W. Bush and scorn for Bush's prominent liberal critics. In this energetic defense of the president, he paints a picture of Bush as being much cagier and politically clever than some of the more well-known voices on the left give him credit for. As Podhoretz describes it, Bush's classic maneuver is to take up a position thought to be unpopular among Washington insiders, such as not one but two rounds of sizeable tax cuts. He then rallies public support behind the idea, thereby outflanking possible opposition, scoring political victories, and increasing his political capital. Bush Country presents chapters on what the author says are some of the most common "crazy liberal ideas" about the President and then sets out to disprove them. But by using the most incendiary descriptions possible ("Bush is a puppet," "Bush is a moron," and "Bush wants to bankrupt the government") to describe the ideas, Podhoretz makes the disproving that much easier. And one does get the sense that he's trying to eat his cake and have it too as he complains about liberals' hatred and viciousness even as he attacks them right back and calls them crazy. But Podhoretz does not necessarily march in lockstep with every Republican official. He has much scorn for the first President Bush and talks openly about his initial misgivings as "Dubya" rose to power and prominence. The book is at its best when describing the ways in which the son has made efforts to learn from the father's mistakes and distance himself from George H.W. Bush's legacy. Written with plenty of passion and humor, Bush Country will likely please Bush supporters who have watched the president take hits from the Al Franken, Michael Moore, and others on the left. --John Moe

                    Book Description

In this rousing, persuasive, and hugely entertaining book, John Podhoretz says that George W. Bush has earned a place in the pantheon of great American chief executives---and shows in one amazing detail after another how Bush's success has driven some of his critics into a pathological frenzy.Podhoretz is the first to acknowledge that the odds were stacked against Dubya, the inexperienced Texas governor who took up residence in the White House lacking an electoral majority, dogged by widely publicized verbal mishaps, and widely viewed by the American elite as a lightweight. But to the delight of his friends and the teeth-gnashing frustration of liberals, George W. Bush has proven himself an immensely effective president. Throughout his three years in the White House, as Podhoretz explains, Dubya has outsmarted, out-maneuvered, out-articulated, and outshone adversaries and critics. Steeled by the tragedy of September 11, the new president took a nation more obsessed with reality television than with the reality of international terrorism and girded it for the long struggle that lay ahead. He has presided over two major military campaigns to stunning success, initiated tax cuts whose dimensions have awed critics and fans alike, and brought his party into the twenty-first century. He has been resourceful, disciplined, and independent-minded---so much so that he was able to reject his own father's governing style as president to find his own voice and his own place in history.Bush hasn't hoarded his political capital, but has used it in bold and unexpected ways. Instead of bowing to conventional wisdom and carving out a centrist position, he has remained true to his ideological roots. Instead of deferring to established Beltway thinking, he has done what he thinks is best for America and the world. As Bush has grown more presidential, the criticisms of him have grown more intense---and, in Podhoretz's view, crazier and crazier. In a series of short chapters, Podhoretz takes a rhetorical scalpel to eight of the wildest caricatures of Bush and leaves them in hilarious shreds. In a season of broadsides being fired from both sides of the aisle, here is a book that distinguishes itself by the force of its arguments and the ringing clarity of its thought. Impassioned, insightful, and convincing, Bush Country is an analysis of a presidency gone right and a celebration of a 0man who has already earned his place in history.

As I distinctly recall, Bush's campaign slogan was NOT "I will drive liberals insane". It was "I'm a uniter, not a divider."

Sure, this tome deals with its chief subject quite nicely. But what I really would like to see (in subsequent editions?) is a version that uses more absorbent paper.
Seriously, one reads, or more appropriately goes through, this book in that "special" room. Is it too much to ask for paper with greater absorbency?
Think of the readers, and their needs for cleanliness when contemplating the legacy of this character.

1 out of 5 stars Podhoretz Should Have Waited.......2007-06-05

Three years on, with Podhoretz himself repudiating Bush's views, and with Bush's approval ratings hovering around 30%, it seems clear that Bush cannot be considered a "Great" anything, let alone a leader of the 21st Century. The failures of his Administration are too lengthy and obvious--not to mention depressing--to document. It is small wonder that this hagiography has plummeted down the Amazon sales list like a lead brick dropped from a plane.

In years to come, I suspect that many conservatives will attempt to explain that they really, truly didn't like Bush, or trust him, or believe that he was a "real" conservative in the Reagan mold--we can already see the revisionism beginning as I write this. But when there are books like this out there, it's going to be mighty difficult for Podhoretz and his ilk to run away from their record. I suspect, however, that they will try anyway.

An Untalented Young Mr. Podhoretz owes his position to his father. By himself he is a shallow thinker of a strange category of neocons who would like us to invade the world (themselves, they would not serve) and invate the world.
A strange policy of keeping our borders open, so that any terrorist can and does enter upon payment of $5K to coyote, while at the same time have our army in Arab lands defending their borders.

3 out of 5 stars Long Winded, but Right!.......2006-05-25

As an American as I was raised to love my country and always respect my President. I mean, by the simple virtue that the MAJORITY of Americans elected the man to office means he must be the better choice. I was very glad to see someone finally taking a stand against Michael Moore and all his friends and setting the record straight. Unfortunately, I found it too wordy for my personal tastes. I don't like to read a book and the dictionary at the same time! However, the points that really came across were the right ones and I would strongly advise bringing a copy of this with you too dinner parties where some of your "blue state" neighbors or relatives might be in attendence. Hopefully this book will inspire someone else to write a similar but easier to read version.

Preceding the phenomenal success of Mitch Albom's Tuesdays with Morrie, in which Albom discusses his weekly visits with his mentor, Morrie, as Morrie faces death from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Morrie Schwartz published his own book, Morrie: In His Own Words.

Schwartz intended his words to be read by people dying of terminal illnesses with passages titled ,"Living with Physical Limitations," "Grieving for Your Losses," and "Reviewing the Past." Yet, just as in the case in Tuesdays with Morrie, this collection of plainspoken reflections transcends the "death and dying" category and is more aptly shelved in one's inspiration and spirituality collection.

For example, Schwartz's simple thoughts on courage could speak to any seeker of enlightenment.

"Dealing bravely with physical pain or accidents takes one kind of courage," he writes. "Facing life as it is and accepting it requires another....I have found courage through seeking thoughtfulness, openheartedness, detachment, and other responses that make up a composed life and a calm response to illness....I hope that I can continue in this way to the end so that I die with inner peace.
As it was, on November 4, 1995, Morrie Schwartz died just as he hoped he would. --Gail Hudson

                    Book Description

"Learn how to live and you'll know how to die; learn how to die, and you'll know how to live."

In these remarkable pages are the profound, life-affirming words of Morrie Schwartz as he faced his own imminent death.

In 1994, at the age of seventy-seven, Schwartz learned he had ALS, commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Undaunted, the former professor embraced his illness, choosing to live passionately and calmly until the end. He also embarked on his greatest teaching adventure: sharing his evolving knowledge of living while dying.

With warmth, wisdom, and humor, Morrie reveals how to:
-- live fully in the moment
-- tap into the powers of the mind to transcend physical limitations
                    -- grieve for your losses
-- reach out to family and friends
-- develop an inner space for meditation and spiritual connection.

It's never too late to become the kind of person you'd like to be. Morrie shows the way in his magnificent legacy of love, forgiveness, transcendence, and redemption, a guide to living fully to the end of your days.

Morrie's willingness to talk about his illness made him an inspiration. In 1995 Nightline ran three interviews in which Ted Koppel spoke to Morrie about life, death and the disease that was afflicting his body.

In Morrie: In His Own Words, Morrie combined inspiring lessons with practical advice to help those who have chronic or terminal sickness and to help those close to them maintain healthy emotions and loving relationships. As life-affirming as it is life-releasing, Morrie: In His Own Words will have a profound effect on generations of readers.

I wish I had read this book when my husband was dying of ALS. It should be a must for everyone who'd been given a Medical Death Sentance and their family who have to stand by helplessly while their loved one diminishes and then dies before their eyes. It's compelling and would at least ease the sorrow that becomes part of their life.

This book makes you realize that Morrie was such an amazing person. It makes you wish you had known him. But it is also more a book for a person who knows he is dying. Or for someone who loves someone who is dying, you could read it together. It offers positive thinking for a person who has already accepted his imminent death.

The shipping to Guam was VERY FAST although it was only USPS priority mail. If you are a Mitch Albom fan, this book is literally in Morrie's own words. So the style is not quite the same. If you just want a little more in depth of him (Morrie), this is must. My 17 yr old has to do a project quarterly and read all of Albom's books, and this is the last one.

5 out of 5 stars Touching View of Humanity.......2006-10-11

Reading Tuesday's With Morrie touched me deeply, since I struggle everyday with a congenital heart problem--and I never know when the next day may be my last. Morrie's wisdom, humor and expriences is brought through from Mitch Albom's terrific writing. Morrie's words cannot be more insightful and wise as my body is beginning to break down....I re-read his book quite often, so I can feel uplifted.

This is truly a powerful learning tool for those who know people who are suffering, or are dying, or who just wish to know more about "why we're here".

There is one thing they didn't mention, perhaps was edited out-- We live on in immortality through the memories, experiences and love of the ones we leave behind. [and in some cases, in books, essays, quotes, music etc. that are produced by us]

One will underand from reading Tuesdays With Morrie is that Death and Life are intertwined, and that Death is nothing to be afraid of. Not even the pain of death is something to fear, as long as you are ready to face it.

If you've read Tuesdays with Morrie, then this has to be a companion read. They cover the same material but In His Own Words definitely makes you, as the reader, think of your own immortality and how to better yourself so that in the end, you will have contributed all that is important to you.
