My goodness, where do I begin...TYPOS, GRAMMATICAL ERRORS AND A TON OF NONSENSE about life on "the Street". I spent 5 years on Wall Street in various areas of the industry at 2 of the top 5 firms and another one of the top 10 firms. I bought the book because I thought it might give me a basic overview of other areas I might be able to move into and plan a stategy to do. Geez, I was awestruck at the amount of poor writing and overinflated depictions of life in I-Banking. Spare me! I was shocked that the authors made it out of high school much less college and prestigious business program. (I should apply to the school and tell them you can't tell me "no" because you said "yes" to this guy, and look how he writes and openly acknowledges he's an alumni member.) Spend your money elsewhere. Find folks in the business. You will fare much better. This should get negative stars for a poor attempt at a marketing/advertising book attempting to be substantive.

Let me just say that there are waaay better books out there on the subject, even if you just want to get a brief rundown. And you needn't even be a grammar nut like myself to feel antsy about when the next spelling or syntax error is going to show up, because there's an average of one per page. Honestly, I couldn't get through half the book, but I'm pretty sure there was nothing in the latter pages to make up for it.

This is a book written in very simple language, explaining the basics of investment banking. I liked the book because it is not very big, and everything is explained in very simple terms. Probably not the best choice for those who are looking to gain in-depth knowledge. Found a few typos here and there.

This is the second Vault guide that I have read, and the second disappointment that I have had with this series. I really isn't a career guide at all, just a very short back ground on what IB is. You can find a description of IB on the internet for free. The only redeeming value is the "day in a life of", but even then, there are only a dozen pages or so. In all, you can find most of what is in the book for free on the internet. I won't be buying any more vault products, as they have little information, and more pages of ads for other vault products than pages of usefull information.

I read this publication after getting hired into international investment banking - fact is, there is something new to learn in this book for 'everyone' interested in investment banking, even those who have been in the industry for a couple of years. Having interviewed college graduates for Analyst jobs, the book would certainly be of use to them. But obviously it won't get you a job if you're credentials aren't up to it!
In an industry that changes by the day, use the book as a reference, and remember to do your own reading of the WSJ before your interviews. The firm overviews are slightly cliché, but do give a sense of the unique personalities of each bank.
All in all, you will sound knowledgeable having read the book, but it clearly won't magically get you a plum job on Wall Street.

I thought this guide was a very thorough inside look at the I-banks. I also bought the Vault Reports "Guide to Finance Interviews," which is the book that has all the finance questions w/ model answers.

I bought this book because I thought it contained interview questions and some model answers. Well, it doesn't! Contrary to what some of the reviewers wrote, the 1999 edition for some reason doesn't have any interview questions.
Other than this big disappointment, it is generally a good book, if you are looking for a general overview of the bulge-brakcet I-banks on the Street.

This guide is excellent and was a great help is getting my current job on Wall Street. Especially useful were all of the actual finance interview questions with model answers...some of which I encountered word-for-word in my interviews! The insider profiles of the major investment banks were also a fascinating read.

Waste of paper.......2003-12-22
I think positive reviews for these books come from "Vault Staff" The book is tiny and thin, with doublespaced paragraphs to attempt to beef it up. So, each page is in this book has approximately 1/3 of a page's worth of information.
Having said that, we are treated to about 20 pages of information on the financial industry. We are treated to information like "the stock market is where shares of stock - pieces of ownership in companies - are traded every day." No mention of currency markets.
Then, we have 30 pages listing the jobs. The jobs listed include "trader" and each of one, yes one SHORT paragraph describing what they do.
Finally, a list of investment banks (Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley) with a 1 to 3 pages describing what it's like to work there (long hours).
Most of this information is common knowledge to people who have half a clue about the industry - TIAA pays less than Goldman: who knew?
One great thing about this book is the advertisements: Not just for other Vault products and sites, but for a few investment banks and recruiters - this may be be the opportunity the readers are hoping for.

I found this book to be immensely helpful to distinguishing the various investment banks and commercial banks. There are also specific tips for each company on what they look for in the job interview. Particularly as wall street is downsizing, I think the Vault book provided me with the edge I needed to land my job in a tough job market.
