Customer Reviews:
Very Good.......2001-05-31
Of several Munich guides I own this is the best one I've bought to date. It's witty, and gives a great overview of attractions, hotels and restaurants alongside the usual wealth of practical information. The maps could be organized better but still are far superior to that of the Rough Guide, Fodor's or Frommer's. As a newcomer to New York I know what it's like to be parachuted into a big city, and Lonely Planet's book made Munich easily accessible, and fun.
Accurate, But Overly Cynical & Poorly Organized.......2001-01-04
The first thing I noticed about this book was the difficulty in finding information quickly and efficiently. This is especially important if you're standing on a street corner in Munich in a driving snowstorm trying to find the glockenspiel.
Maps are generally good, but could be slightly more detailed.
Information is technically accurate especially in regards to opening times, entrance fees, getting around, walking tours, etc.
I was put off by the author's attitude. His remarks are often flippant and filled with unnecessary cynicism in a forced attempt to be hip. I often had the impression while using this book that he really disliked Munich.
I was particularly surprised at his extreme criticism of service, particularly at restaurants, and can only attribute this to cultural differences. Waiters in Germany, as in most of Europe, are trained to leave you alone and respond when called. As most Americans expect to be given attention every few minutes, this can take some getting used to. (It should be noted that I am an American living in Germany.)
Munich has a lot to offer. If you read this book first, I'm afraid you may be needlessly misled into bypassing this beautiful and, in the end, very fun city.

Book Description
Do you take the chance of creating and amplifying risk when you are simply attempting to understand and control risk? In Phillippe Jorion's Value at Risk, learn the specifics of the value-at-risk system, the risk management program that today's leading banks and financial firms use to calculate and track financial risk. Value at Risk is the first book to thoroughly explain this increasingly influential system, which allows you to gauge financial risks and take proactive steps to control those risks.

Good introduction to VaR.......2007-09-18
This is one of the first books about VaR and so became widely used and read by everyone interested in market risk management. Good as an introduction and to have a good overview of VaR but if you need more detailed information this book will not give you the answers.
Best intro to VAR.......2000-09-02
Cannot think of any other book that gives you the basics and beyond of VAR. As an MBA student I liked most the practical examples. Mathematical stuff is kept to a minimum, even though it can be sometimes quite demanding. Jorion is one of the laeding academics on VAR. He "defends" the properties of VAR very well after some criticism on VAR (see Nassim Taleb's web page).
A Great Introduction to VaR.......2000-07-20
Dr. Jorion's book formally introduced the concept of VaR to me several years ago. It's written so that a novice in risk management can understand the concepts with ease.
A great book.
An excellent introduction to VaR.......1999-07-01
This provides an excellent overview and introduction to VaR and issues surrounding it. A must read for any body involved with financial risk management.
Outstanding and practical.......1999-03-30
Jorian clearly has practiced before he began to preach. I found his work to be essential in designing and implementing a var methodology for the electricity forward market. The examples he gives of the failures to measure and control risk are illuminating and entertaining. I have recommended the book to others and they have agreed that the book is excellent.
Book Description
Destined to become a classic of trading literature, this book demonstrated how perception of risk is the key element to successful options trading. In easy-to-understand, down-to-earth language, Cottle shows traders how to calculate the risk on any option position, from simple puts and calls to sophisticated straddles and butterflies instantly. Cottle explains how to eliminate inappropriate risks, adjust positions as they underlying market changes, and optimize the potential of the option positions. No other book so effectively merges option theory with actual market experience. ptions: Perception and Deception also includes: Dessecting options positions and quantifying the hierarchy of risk; Elimanating or reducing unproductive risk; Matching a strategy to your market outlook.

Updated Review by the Author.......2004-01-13
Reviewer: The author, Charles M. Cottle *** charles@RiskDoctor.com
Although this original text was written for professional market makers, it proved to be a valuable resource for sophisticated retail investors and hedgers. I therefore created a new book, "Coulda Woulda Shoulda" (available for free download at www.riskdoctor.com) which borrowed about 80% of the original text and added more tools for non-professionals including an email dialogue with a relative novice, spanning 2 months. Most of the strict market making tools have been removed but will be resurrected in book 3; "Taming Your Portfolio" due out later this year.
Best book for options traders........2002-12-04
There are basically two types of options books: mathematical
books on valuation that tend to be filled with solutions
for ever more exotic contracts, and books for traders that
go over the practical workings of positions in various
concrete scenarios. Cottle is definitely of the second type.
There's not really much math in it, unless you're intimidated
by three-dimensional graphs. What it does have is an incredible
wealth of insight, from experience, into the tricks and the
exceptions--the rent-a-call, the dividend plays, contract
risk and post-expo deltas, complicated synthetics, the
interrelations between greeks.
That said, what moved me to write a review was to take
exception with a previous reviewer's comment: "No lazy
editing or prose here". The prose is okay, but the editing
is worse than lazy--it's horrendous. Flipping my copy open
at random I come to p.151-152 on Break-Even analysis. Try
finding column 7 in exhibit 4-23, or the supposed arrow in
column 4. It's all a mess. That's an extreme case, but
throughout the text, it's hard enough trying to pick up
the bond options lingo (futures in 32nds but futures-options
in 64ths--all "ticks"; and the different multipliers for
indexes and futures), without having to deal with missing
words, inaccurate references, etc, etc. But ultimately, working
to figure it all out gets you to understand it all the better.
With five years of floor trading as an equity options market
maker, and having read and reread and rereread... Natenberg,
Baird, Hull, Connolly, Cox Ross Rubinstein, Chriss, Taleb--and
others--I'd say Cottle is clearly the best book. That said,
however, I don't know how much use a non-professional--someone
who doesn't manage a large, actively traded book of options--
will get out of it. It should be intellectually rewarding if you
can figure it out. Maybe inspire you to go look for a minimum
wage clerking job in Chicago, NY, Philly, or SF to get abused
for a year or so and then maybe get a badge.
Options Innovator.......2001-11-24
I read Options: Perception and Deception at least 3-4 times before many of the advanced concepts began to sink in. This is not a book for an options novice; in fact, I would suggest that most people read Natenberg's book on options prior to engaging in this incredible text. While many of the advanced 3-D graphs were beyond my grasp, I particularly liked Cottle's description of "real world" options positions, how he executed them and how he managed them throughout their duration. Of particular interest to many readers should be the concept of "gamma scalping", and the section on wingspreads and adjusting positions. This text is so far beyond "mainstream" options books, that words do not describe how important this book will become.
Excellent insights for the seasoned options trader.......2000-03-16
This book is certainly not a tome to learn about the world of options. The author gets straight to the meat of the attributes of options, and the repercussions of the risk they entail. So, I would certainly not recommend this book to a beginner - confusion and discouragement would likely result. However, once one has read some more straightforward option books, and gotten enough of a handle on options to have a good intuitive grasp of ideas like their volatility, multi-position strategies such as spreads, etc, then this book opens up serious opportunities. I'm very impressed with how the book is organized, the completeness of material, the examples (sometimes real-world based, which adds interest to a potentially dry subject). Much of the meat behind the materials is (rightly) mathemetical, so beginning calculus, and plenty of algebra and a fair amount of analytic geometry are definite prerequisites to really get a good understanding of the underlying concepts of ideas like "the greeks" and all the wonderful (2 and 3D) graphs presented. Lastly, I was very impressed with the accuracy of the data. No lazy editing or prose here. If you are contemplating becoming a "serious" options trader, by all means, read this FIRST. The price is small for the potential impact on your effectiveness in options trading. If you are already a serious trader, based on Cottle's observations (the "Perception and Deception" part of the title is no accident - consider the myriad implications of synthetic positions) I'd still be surprised if you don't learn something. I've read or scanned an estimated 30 books on options. I haven't found a peer for this effort.
First Option book for professional Market Makers.......1998-09-14
An option book that provides both - theory & practical insights into option trading and making two sided markets. It is also a great help in understanding and organizing risk while trading options as a professional. A great book for new and seasoned traders as well as risk managers.

Nice to see a book written by a trader.......2006-08-07
It's always refreshing to find a book written by a trader! Most of us in the industry have too many books authored by academics who have never managed risk for a living. This book would be very helpful for beginners looking to get into trading. It's a nice complement to find a text that can go beyond theoretical pricing mechanics and give you a feel for the market. Nice bite size chapters, good ideas, practical examples.
Very good book.......2006-08-01
I have worked at futures market for quite a long time, but until recently options remained a very obscure and complex instrument for me. Some time ago I decided to master option market. So I bought several books on the subject, but none of them was as helpful as the one by Simon Vine. The book is clearly written by a practical expert who knows market realities.
Re-review.......2006-07-26
Sorry Simon.
Been meaning to find the time to write a re-review... with a slight improvement in the rating! haha
I didn't finish the book at the time I wrote the last review.
To date, I have, in fact, finished your book. And overall, the book was actually quite helpful. I must've had an off-day the day I reviewed it the first time.
Anyway, I figured you're just a (good?) trader after all, not a writer. A lot of options texts in the market nowadays are just a lot of marketing blather. So I'll forgive your minor short-comings.
To recap: overall, your book had a lot of good ideas. Your options examples were practical and relevant to the beginner institutional trader/risk manager. For me, the real meat of your book came from Parts 3 to 7.
I liked that your book is not US-centric, futures-centric, equities-centric, or even day-trader-centric.
And I liked the fact that all of your chapters were bite-sizes and a whole lot easier to digest.
Methinks this is the only book of its kind that I know of that caters to institutional traders/salespersons (regardless how Amazon is marketing the book), and (to a certain extent) beginner risk managers.
I won't recommend this book to a rank outsider or even Investors. I can, however, recommend this to novice traders/salespersons who would've have cut their teeth for at least 6 months before they can go into general resource books like these (and being able to recognize the difference between the mistakes I mentioned in my last review and gaps in their own knowledge! haha)
For your next edition, you might want to cover the latest exotic FX structures in more depth. And maybe you could convert your notes at the end of the book as end-of-chapter footnotes instead.
For your next book, if you can write something like the RiskDoctor Charles Cottle's latest book, but with plenty of FX options management examples (from directional trader's and/or market maker's POV) plus a CD-ROM with Excel spreadsheets and calculators, that would be great! haha
Erm... No need for a refund. Your book and Cottle's are the only desk references I use on a regular basis.
My other issues with this book:
The book is being marketed (either by the inside flaps or Editorial Reviews) as a "step-by-step" "practical guide" for "investors". Methinks while the book does have practical examples, it's not really a "practical" book over-all for the investor class. Institutional traders, maybe, but not investors.
And the book would really have to go that extra mile before it can claim the 'step-by-step" bit for investors. Can't say off-hand what that extra mile would entail; just that I don't see it yet.
However, I CAN say the book turned out to be a valuable resource.
My two cents anyway. "Step-by-step" is a very important standard for me. Hence, 4 stars, instead of 5 stars.
Really helpful book........2006-07-25
Exercises is the highlight of the book. It made many points much clearer.
Actually I did not find mistakes the previous review mentions.
I'd like to see more books from this author.
great book.......2006-07-19
This is an excellent book on the strategy. Specifically recommended to the young audience who just joined the market

Informative.......1997-04-24
This book is a good review of the subject.
Regards, Jerry Green, Green Interest Rate Swap Management, http://home.earthlink.net/~green/
Book Description
Sparked with wit and humor, this clever and insightful book provides clear evidence that the stock market is inefficient. In the author's view, models based on rational economic behavior cannot explain important aspects of market behavior. The book tackles important issues in today's financial market in a highly conversational and entertaining manner that will appeal to most readers. Chapter topics include: estimating expected return with the theories of modern finance, estimating portfolio risk and expected return with ad hoc factor models, payoffs to the five families, predicting future stock returns with the expected-return factor model, super stocks and stupid stocks, the international results, the topography of the stock market, the positive payoffs to cheapness and profitability, the negative payoff to risk, and the forces behind the technical payoffs to price-history. For anyone who wants to learn more about today's financial markets.
Customer Reviews:
Good (if overpriced) little book.......2007-06-17
This book is not:
1. A thorough critique of CAPM and APT
2. Long
3. A good explanation of why certain inefficiencies exist in the market
That being said, the book is a good essay on how to look for and find various factors that lead towards market outperformance. Haugen uses regression models and some common-sense statistical reasoning to choose which factors are actually useful.
A Real Eye Opener.......2006-08-20
A must read if you want to understand what makes stocks prices move. A technical book but written in a very accessible and easy to read style.
Good Analysis.......2003-06-07
The Inefficient Stock Market is a nice slap in the face to Modern Finance. Getting my MBA, i was always turned off by Portfolio Management Theory because of the unrealistic assumptions made on the onset (such as everyone being rational and everyone holding an efficient market portfolio). Mr. Haugen provides a great analysis and statistical evidence to show that many of those critical assumptions are in fact wrong.
He also provides an investment strategy of sorts that outperforms the S&P 500. All hedge fund managers should read this book.
Good accessible book on market inefficiencies........2001-12-17
Most investors would benefit from reading this book. It is a good overview of what is known about market inefficiencies and how they can be exploited.
For those who find it too down-market, he also has a weighty tome called "Modern Investment Theory" which is more thorough and more academic in tone. As an example, it describes how to combine Markowicz's techniques with factor models to exploit the inefficiencies more effectively than the approach suggested in 'What works on Wall St' etc.
Badly written book with lot of mistakes.......2001-09-10
I think that CAMP, APT, etc aren't good for investors, but this book misleads them even more. There are several mistakes, and opposite data in various chapters.
