Book Description
For sixty years, Ansel Adams photographed among the great peaks of Yosemite National Park and the High Sierra range:the "range of light." Inspired by their grandeur, their wildness, and their primeval mystery, he made photographs that were to become the icons of America's national park ethic. His reverence for these places#151;the same reverence that fueled his commitment to environmental activism#151;illuminates each image. Yosemite Falls, the brooding majesty of Half Dome#151;we can no longer experience these "holy places" without seeing them through Ansel Adams' eyes. During his lifetime Adams published seven books of images from this region; this new book bringstogether in a single volume the finest photographs from this vast body of work. Alive with anecdote and insight, his writings serve as backdrop for the images, and John Szarkowski's introduction provides testimony to the enduring impact of Adams' Yosemite vision.

Saint Ansel, Who Art in Heaven, Hallowed Be Thy Name.......2007-09-25
Ansel Adams is SO, like, awesome!!!
These photographs are simply breathtaking! Ansel Adams had this uncanny knack for taking the beautiful mountains, trees, clouds and waterways of the High Sierras, and making them look beautiful. It's so amazing contemplating an Ansel Adams photograph: How he took something only visually stunning and transforming it into something so visually stunning is simply astounding!
How DID he do that?
Exceeded my Expextations.......2006-07-22
This is a beautiful book. I suspect the pints are as high in quality as Ansel would have wished them.
I'm glad I bought this book and will enjoy the pictures contained within it for many years.
Excellent, uncompromised beauty.......1999-07-22
Really great photos of mounatin scapes in and about Yosimite. Waterfalls, forests, mountains and sky. Typical Ansel, most flawless.

Have you ever wondered why we don't find color photographs of today as emotion-evoking as the black and white photographs of the great masters like Ansel Adams or Edward Weston? Come and see this book, you will find photographs that will noursih your soul and raise your spirit. Photographs that will speak to yourself. Photographs that you can look at again and again and you will discover newer meanings each time. This book is a compilation of 72 of the best color images of the photographer taken during the span of fifeteen years. All the photographs were taken using a 4x5 view camera and has exquisite image detail. At the end of the book, Neill briefly describes each image with background information and technical details. Inspirational.......2000-10-20
Photography has always been an outlet to certain visionaries in our society. Giving them a way to express to others the way they interpret somewhat ordinary and sometimes not so ordinary sights. This collection of images inspires all those who look at them. And then combining these with words of inspiratin and thought provoking prose makes it a treat to the soul as well as the eyes.

If David Muench's photographs of U.S. parks and monuments fail to take your breath away, you may want to check your pulse. If they fail to inspire you to visit Canyonlands, Acadia, Big Bend, or the Great Smoky Mountains, you have something to answer for. Muench has inspired a whole generation of landscape photographers with his images, which border on the mystical; he in turn takes his inspiration from the "primal beauty" of these treasures, which are places of worship to him. Muench makes it evident in an afterword that he is not a verbal communicator; perhaps that is to our advantage, for it forces him to express himself with the camera.
Book Description
Portraits of 33 of the nation's most scenic and popular national parks.
Customer Reviews:
Best on subject.......2007-04-05
The only thing wrong with this book is its unavailability. Out of print since 2005, this is quite simply the finest cofee table book on national parks ever made, bar none. Incredible paper and print quality. I have given this book as a gift several times.
"Nature's Glory" would be a better title.......2006-05-06
Despite the seemingly mediocre title of this book, the pictures are anything but average. Here, you will find landscapes of various different types and beauty, from rugged cliffs to lush forests and waterfalls. The natural beauty of this book will challenge anyone who believes that photography is not an art, as Meunch has an unbelievable talent for it. In fact, while Udall is a good essay writer, I would even go so far as to say that Meunch should be credited as the author here. Not only does he capture breathtaking images, but his perspective is amazing as well, particularly in his forest photos. The forest section of the book perfectly represents the vastness of the trees, making me feel as though I'm a nymph or some other woodland creature marveling at the majesty around me. Whether you are a nature lover or have never appreciated it before, I recommend you get this book now!
National Parks of America.......2002-11-15
"National Parks of America" is a wonderful collection of photographs from the National Parks in the United States. David Muench does a marvelous job capturing some of the the most beautiful places in the United States. His photographs include the Alaskan National Parks, the Grand Canyon, the giant redwoods in Redwood National Park, the giant sequoias in Sequoia National Park, the natural bridges in the national parks in Utah, Carlsbad Caverns in New Mexico, Old Faithful geyser in Yellowstone National Park, Isle Royale in Michigan, and the Great Smoky Mountains in North Carolina and Tennessee. There is a map of all of the places in the National Park System, and an essay by Stewart L. Udall, former Secretary of the Interior under Kennedy and Johnson, and James R. Udall. I cannot recommend this book enough. You must see it to fully understand what an outstanding book it truly is. It made me want to visit these places as soon as possible!
Wonderful!.......2001-07-15
This is the book with the most beautiful pictures of America's National Parks I have seen so far. The print quality of the photographs is excellent. I have given this book as a gift to many of my friends and relatives!
Awesome.. The ultimate tribute to the National Parks.........1999-03-15
This is one helluva book. Thank you Kutti. The photographs would make an nature enthusist drool with sheer glee, the text by Udall brothers is so refreshing, makes you wanna follow their paths. David's large format photographs are guaranteed to take your breath away. It did for me..Amazing..and the book is big and heavy..with the highest quality paper possible. Buy it..I am planning to get some camping equipments really soon...:))

Customer Reviews:
Circle of Life in East Africa Documented in Stunning Photographs.......2006-08-29
Pay heed to the subtitle of this book - "Natural Order on the African Plain" - as it does not shy away from images that may not show up in a children's book. I'm so glad this tome is still in publication, as it is a beautifully photographed document of life and death on the Serengeti Plain that stretches across Kenya and Tanzania in East Africa. Photographer Mitsuaki Iwago has captured the vibrancy of the mythic wildlife of this expansive area, in particular, the scope of the Great Migration, when over a million wildebeest and zebra travel hundreds of miles in search of water.
Iwago has a wondrous eye for detail, whether it's an uninterrupted pattern of zebras with their heads bowed to drink up from a watering hole or a gaggle of hungry hawks gnawing on the dead carcass of a lion. My personal favorites are any pictures showing adult animals and their children and the ones showing the Masai villagers living so naturally amid the wildlife. Even the eye-wincing scenes of death make for vivid reminders of how essential the cycle of life is on the plain. I have been lucky enough to have been on safari on the Masai Mara, which is the northern part of the plain, and the images in Iwago's book perfectly evoke my experiences on the range rover as we looked at life happen. This is a great coffee-table book at the right size not to be overwhelming.
Excellent choice if you're going or have gone..........2006-08-04
This book has the pictures we wish we could have taken, excellent information, covers the serengeti from rain season to dry. Highly recommend for someone going to or who has been to the serengeti.
Picture book.......2004-01-27
The pictures are stunning.
But it is only a coffee-table book, and there it will remain, because pictures is all it is. You get no sense of place; it is impossible to orient yourself ... a nice picture of an elephant is just that, and this book provides no context whatever.
But, it does have nice pictures.
Pictures, just pictures.......2002-05-17
The pictures are fine, but this book won't show anyone interested in wildlife anything new - & it doesn't explain anything...
Wildlife and nature photography at its best!.......2002-01-21
These images bring the Serengeti to you. This being largely a pictoral tour of the Serengeti, words do it little justice. If you are an intelligent animal lover with a pulse, you will pay twice the cover price for this book.

Customer Reviews:
Focusing on Landscape Photography? This is GREAT!.......2006-05-27
Previous reviewers have been unfair with this book. You cannot knock a book for delivering exactly what it promises to deliver.
Following up on the great National Geographic Photography Field Guide and focusing specifically on landscapes, of course this book is going to be thinner. However, it shines at what it sets out to do.
Every chapter is packed with world-class photography tips as well as inspiring landscape images - from the world's best. Most of the excellent examples are by Caputo himself but outstanding photographers such as Sam Abell, Bruce Dale, and James Blair have also contributed many of the stunning photos throughout the book.
This small guidebook is clear, honest, and practical, full of techniques that work for landscape photographers shooting in the real world. What's more, it fits in your camera bag!
Good, slim guide to landscape photography.......2003-07-02
The Landscapes Field Guide continues along one branch of the first NGS field guide. It contains more advanced composition and technical advice than the first field guide, tailored to the specific art of photographing natural landscapes in a variety of settings and times of the day. Once again, Caputo writes a book that is not only succinct, but also enjoyable to read.
The Landscapes Field Guide maintains an important aspect of the original: profiles of National Geographic photographers, each with their own set of advice. This is a primary strength of the NGS photography field guides and something that separates them from other books. Not only are the profile sections useful in learning how to go about taking pictures, they are interesting in their own right as glimpses into how different artists work.
Buy the original.......2002-10-08
National Geographic's original Field Guide was a big hit for a wide audience of photography aficionados. There was plenty for beginners, such as advice on equipment selection, basic subjects such as the relationship between shutter speed and aperture, and film selection. More advanced readers could benefit from the excellent essays contributed by Geographic's veteran staff photographers.
Unfortunately, Geographic appears to be trying to turn the formula into a franchise. In this most recent volume, Landscapes the focus is on, well, landscapes. The problem is that there is very little in this book that wasn't effectively covered in the first one. Yeah, use a tripod. Yeah, don't let snowy scenes fool your lightmeter. And no, the art of photography does not become clearer if you repeat the same points over and over for 150 pages.
If you don't have the original Field Guide then get it; I found it to be both informative and inspirational. If you already have it then don't buy Landscapes; it doesn't add any meaningful new material. Not recommended.
Great Photos, but little information.......2002-08-24
I expected more from this book. It is basically a non-technical review of composition for the beginner. The photos are really great, but they don't list the usual information used to get them (lens type, settings, filters, etc.). I really didn't gain any insight from this book, and doubt that anyone other than a beginning photographer would either.
For landscape photography, and for photography in general, their basic photography guide is much better.

One might wish for a larger format, but clearly every effort was made to reproduce the depth, detail and textures that make much of Ansel Adams' photography worth viewing again and again. Many famous images of his most beloved source of inspiration are included here, which makes this handsome, economical edition a good introduction to his work.

Customer Reviews:
A sense of disappointment.......2005-03-11
As a collector of cat books, I had anticipated "National Geographic Cat Shots" being something special, especially with the quality of the cover photograph. Unfortunately, I was disappointed. Although a good collection of photos, I felt that they didn't reflect the true nature and character of the cat.
Left me wanting more!.......2002-02-25
Wonderful photos. Cats are great subjects and make even a mundane photo special!
The beauty of simplicity.......1999-04-06
What a fantastic book! Congratulations National Geographic. The best I've seen in cats. Highly recommended.

Book Description
Trees capture our imagination because they are rooted solidly in the earth but point ethereally toward the sky. They occupy a dimension that has as much to do with time and patience as with place and landscape. They are vertical beings to whom we attribute qualities both divine and human. Since 1991, photographer Barbara Bosworth has been on a quest to photograph America's "champion" trees -- trees that are the biggest of their species, as recorded in the National Register of Big Trees, a list established and maintained by the nonprofit conservation organization American Forests. She has traveled down highways and up back roads, walked through forests and across clear-cut land, sometimes led by local tree enthusiasts, sometimes alone, to photograph trees that are remarkable not only for their size but for their endurance.
Bosworth finds champion trees in backyards, fields, and forests, near roadways, power lines, and sidewalks. Her photographs document the trees' magnificence but also show how they are markers of a changing landscape. The yellow poplar, for example, stands on the fringes of a suburban housing development, in the center of a park for the enjoyment and relaxation of residents. The western red cedar stands alone in the middle of a clear-cut, saved from logging only because it is recorded in the Register as the biggest of its kind. The trees and their surroundings tell us about our relationship with nature and the land.
Bosworth captures the ineffable grace and dignity of trees with clarity and directness: the green ash that shades a midwestern crossroads, the common pear that blooms in a Washington field, and the Florida strangler fig with its mass of entwining aerial roots. Her photographs, panoramic views taken with an 8 x 10 camera, show the immensity of the largest species and the hidden triumphs of the smallest. Some trees are dethroned each year because of sickness or destruction, but more often simpy because a new and bigger specimen is discovered; only three trees from the original Register in 1940 are still living today. Bosworth's 70 photographs of champion trees are not only a collection of tree portraits but the story of an American adventure as well.

Photography, Art, OR Trees.......2006-10-22
As a Photographer this book is Fine, as a Sculptor it is OK, as a Botanist it is Minimal, as a Lumberjack it is a Bore. I would suggest you not buy this book if you are looking for Good photographs of Champion Tree Specimens. But if you are looking for Beautifull photographs of Trees this is a great book. The photographic style takes it away from a book of specimens and to a book of photographic art.
A Wonderful Tree Lovers Book.......2006-03-17
I found this book quite beautiful. Wall to wall black & white photographs of trees showing the intimate relationship with their environment. I would definately recommend this book to anyone who is passionate about trees. Or to anyone who is looking for great photograhic reference as I was. If you are concidering getting this book also look at "AMONG TREES" by Sean Kernan.

(Planeta Journal) -- Panoramic black-and-white photographs document the authors visit to the largest of their species in the United States. The National Register of Big Trees is updated every two years. It has prompted the development of a society of "big tree hunters" who track down rumors of possible champions and to verify the size of new contenders as well as the passing of old champions.
Images too small to be appreciated.......2005-12-04
I just received this book in the mail. I was so looking forward to taking in the images - but now I am so disappointed. First of all, I understand panoramic images have certain proportions, but when an extensive landscape photo in a book is only slightly over 4 inches in one dimension, that is just too small to be able to show all the detail to the viewer. This book would be much more successful if it were larger. Also, I am a big fan of black and white, but I did not read in any advertisement that these images were black and white. I think that should be stated, especially in nature photography since black and white film creates an entirely different product from color film. The consumer should be given the information to make their choice according to their taste. I was looking forward to comparing the different shades of green in the different varieties of trees and landscapes I would be seeing. Looking at these trees in black in white is more a study in texture, tone, and form. The trees have been abstracted for me since these images do not make me feel like "I am there" since being "there" would be in color. Also, the majority of the images all have the horizon line in the same place and the tree in the same place in the photo, as if the trees were all taken to the same studio and asked to sit in the same chair. I'm sure this perspective choice brings unity to the photo series when it is hanging on a wall, but in a book it is visually boring, page after page. I am sure I would enjoy these photos much more in person. They are just not impressive in this book.
AMAZING Images - BOSWORTH is Truly Gifted!.......2005-11-11
With all due respect, S. Bowman's (Very disappointed!, September 27, 2005) review of this volume must be the product of an extraordinarily tiny brain, enormously inadequate eyesight or both! Perhaps Mr. and Mrs. Bowman should consider exploring visual and literary experiences that are better matched to their obviously limited capabilities - The Hallmark Store!
