Many of us have stopped to pick bunches of wildflowers or have admired them as they flourished in fields, hiking trails, and roads. Always appreciated but not always recognized, now these beauties can easily be identified with Wildflowers in the Field and Forest, the most inclusive field guide available to the wildflowers of the northeastern United States. Designed for easy use, the book features two-page spreads with descriptive text and range maps on one side facing pages of color photos on the other. The descriptions are concise, but thorough, and the range maps show both where the plant grows and what time of year it is likely to be in bloom. Plants are grouped by flower color, usually the feature first noticed by the observer. The species are subsequently grouped by petal arrangement, type of leaves, and number of flower parts as indicated in the "quick characters" box at the top of each page. There is also a simple key in the beginning of the book that allows one to quickly narrow the search to a few pages. In addition to the more common and conspicuous wildflowers, many of the lesser known, and often overlooked, species are also depicted. Full-color photos generally show the flowers of the plant, and while insets of leaves (and occasionally fruits) are often included to help in identification. A bar on each photo allows users to accurately judge the actual size of each flower. Both serious botanists and casual nature observers will welcome this beautifully illustrated and expertly detailed guide. A sturdy binding, somewhat water resistant pages along with excellent photographs (not line drawings), and descriptions of about 1450 native, and naturalized wildflowers of the region. What more could be asked of a field guide. An excellent resource.

The volume has nice pictures and is somewhat organized so that a beginner could use it to stimulate further interest in Botany and Wildflowers.
Beautifully Photographed New Book.......2006-08-12
The first thing that strikes you about this book is the quality of the photographs of the plants. Instead of the line drawings so often used, here are beautifully printed full color pictures of the blooms of the flowers. Note: FLOWERS, this is not a random guide to plants, but to flowers.
Next comes the identification procedure that they have developed. Over a couple or three pages they provide a guide to identifying the plant. Here's an example:

The book covers the Northeastern United States from about Washington DC to Chicago, and up past Maine a little ways into Canada.

The Amateur Botanist's Best Friend.......2006-08-02
This book has been a tremendous help in my efforts to identify the myriad wildflowers in our area. With only a couple of exceptions I have easily found a match for all my 'specimens'. I've learned the lesson that one needs a book that specializes in the area of search, NOT a general wildflower guide. The pictures are beautiful and the descriptions and seasonal maps also aid in the hunt.

This is a good book on wildflowers, vines, shrubs, trees of Texas and adjoining parts of Louisiana. Pictures are generally very good and are grouped by color and in a section by themselves. Each picture has a number reference and looking up the number gives you plant ID information and a range map. My biggest criticism of the book is that it just doesn't cover enough species - for what it does cover, it is excellent.
More than just a great little field guide...........2001-06-15
I own several field guides to Texas wildflowers, and I find this one to be the best among them. There are books with bigger and better photographs, but none come close to having the nearly 400 color photos this one has. This one also has maps of growing areas for each plant identified and very clear descriptions of each plant. It even has sections on Texas' endangered species and landscaping with native plants.
The book divides the plants into five sections for easy use. The wildflowers are further divided into colors to help find and identify them quickly. The five sections are (1) herbaceous wildflowers, (2) vines, (3) trees and shrubs, (4) cacti, agaves, yuccas and other succulents, and (5) miscellaneous plants, weeds and growths on trees. These are followed by appendices on how to identify common plant families and "plant watching" as a hobby (collecting plants, how to make a plant press and save your specimens, and a sample wildflower documentation sheet). Finally, there are three glossaries and an index.
While some might complain that the plant photographs are not printed with the specimen entries (they are grouped together in the center of the book), this is really quite handy. Each photo is numbered identically with the entries, so matching the photo with the description is really very simple. Indeed, it is quite easy to find the flower by its photo and then look up the corresponding plant description by the photo number.
All in all, this is the only wildflower field guide Texans will need. If you want a desk reference, that's another matter.

While this guide isn't bursting with information about each plant, it offers a quick guide to many of the trees and wildflowers that one is likely to find in Virginia.
The guide is long and thin shaped with only a few pages. It's made of coated thick paper (or if you prefer, thin cardboard).

This is nothing more than a laminated pamphlet. Maybe it would be good for someone to keep in their glovebox if they work in the field a lot. However, I wouldn't call this a book.

This isn't nearly as comprehensive as I hoped..basically a laminated brochure. I couldn't possibly use it to identify the plants I had hoped to.

Expected a book, received a folded pamphlet.......2005-06-01
This was a disappointment. I expected a small "paper bound" booklet that contained illustrations and descriptions. I received a 8.25 x 22.00 sheet that was folded multiple times to create a 4.00 x 8.25 pamphlet. The material is good quality and should stand up to some exposure to moisture since it has a plastic coating. The illustrations are color and fairly good for drawings, but they are small and require imagination to figure out the scale. Size of the plant is stated, but I didn't see any description of flower size. For me, the descriptions are inadequate and left a lot to be desired.
I will probably buy something else and maybe use this in the field as a reminder of plant names. I don't believe that it is going to be much help identifying plants for the first time.
It shows approximately 40 trees and and 93 plants if I counted correctly.

Lists only about 120 species; more suitable for the novice.......1999-07-15
This was a disappointment: Be sure you understand that this is just an introduction to familiar species and not a comprehensive guide. It lists just 120 trees and flowers, but its design makes it easy to handle for quick reference. Note that this is not a paperbook book but rather, a 12-sided, accordian-folded laminated brochure which does not warrant its price. This is more suitable for the novice and not the serious naturalist.
