This book has alot of practical information and has much more detailed culture information about many different orchid families, also has information about small orchid families that I have not found in any other book about orchids.This book also gives step by step instructions on how to repot or divide several different types of orchids including paphiopediliums and Phrags.

I am an amateur orchid grower and have read a variety of books on the subject. So far, this is the best book I encountered and the most comprehensive. Not only that, it is a work of art, printed on high quality of paper. The pictures are outstanding and so is the carefully written text. This book is also just loaded with inexpensive ideas on various small projects that you can do to improve your results. If you are going to get one book on orchids, this should be it!

I believe that this is the best book out there on orchids. Mr Cullina covers the important and often allusive culture issues confronted in growing orchids in real depth. He provides thoughtful, comon sense explanations for his reccomendations that go way beyond those found in other books I have read on the subject. The second half of the book details the cultural requirements and rates the difficulty level of 100 species of potential interest to growers with experience levels from beginner to expert. Much more than a coffee table book, Understanding Orchids is a valuable reference that belongs in every orchid enthuiast's library.

As a relatively new orchid grower, I found this to be one of the most useful books for a beginner. In addition, it is written is a very accessible, friendly style, with many examples of the author's struggles to succeed with orchids. I highly recommend it!

Alfred Byrd Graf is probably the most widely traveled plant explorer of the world's tropics and subtropics. Horticulturist, botanist, and professional photographer, he has roamed the earth in the spirit of Von Humboll, Darwin, and David Fairchild earlier in the 19th and 20th centuries, in search of exotic botanicals to add to the enlarging horticulture of the world. Among the honors received by the author are the award of the large Gold Medal of the Massachusetts Horticultural Society, the Certificate of Merit of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, the Distinguished Service Award of the Horticultural Society of New York, a Citation Award of the American Horticultural Society, and the Tercentenary Medalliou of the State of New Jersey. IN 1967 he was invested with the Sarah Champman Francis Medal of the Garden Club of America for outstanding literary achievement. In Pittsburgh, in 1972, Alfred Graf was elected to horticulture's hall of fame, the highest distinction given by the society of American Florists, and in 1978he was awarded the doctor of Science degree.
His most recent publications are TROPICA, Color-ama of Exotic Plants with 7000 photos incl. Plants indoors. Also Hortica (8100 photos), Color Cyclopedia of Garden Flora in all Climates showing Hardiness Zones.

I own the 5th edition. I glanced through a few pages (after having spent hours on the Internet researching tropical plants for my personal tropical garden) and had to buy it right then and there! I did not want to chance not being able to find it again. It's the best! I can't foresee ever having to wonder what any other tropical plant looks like! I've found plants in this book that I could not identify on the web or through local nurseries. I was not able to put this book down for hours after it's purchase and continue to use it almost daily. Totally worth the $185 price! If I'd lost it on the way home from having just purchased it, I'd be right back trying to buy another!

Iain Gately's Tobacco is a sweeping cultural history of the world's most prevalent addiction, and it's probably the best book ever written on its subject. Gately begins in pre-Columbian America, where the natives made tobacco "their most popular gift to the rest of humanity," and continues through all the cantankerous smoking litigation of the 1990s. The story touches on just about every subject imaginable: tobacco in literature, the movies, and society. I really do not understand the objections that other reviewers had to this book. Gately put together a lively, enchanting narrative concerning the history of tobacco. He covers a great many things and does not fail to include the words of those who once sung its praises. That's what should be done whenever one wishes to tell a "complete" story about anything. He does not self-censor his prose which is exactly what those of us most interested in the truth deeply desire. This book isn't titled "Quit Smoking," it's a cultural history of tobacco. Anyway, Gately presents statistics and analysis elucidating the dangers inherent to using the infamous weed. He outlines the positions of the state and depicts lung cancer as the private hell it clearly is. Smoking is a personal choice and there's no reason to ban it as the prohibition of substances has not met with much success over the years. I'm sure the author would agree with my conclusion but that does not mean he is depicting tobacco in a favorable light. This book was a serious page-turner and I enjoyed it very much. I recommend it without reservation.

This book should carry a label - just like a cigarette box: WARNING ! Reading the next 370 can be hazardous to your (mental) health !
The author paints a rosy picture of smoking as a "pleasure", of tobacco as a stuff that brings out the best in soldiers, writers, hunters, lovers - hardly ever is it associated with something vile, deplorable. And of course the millions who have died and will die in the future are hardly worth mentioning. Those who warned against the dreadful habit through the ages (starting with King James I. who called it "dangerous to the lungs" - in 1605 !) are rdidiculed and belittled, the scientific evidence emerging after the 1950 landmark studies by Evart Graham and Ernest Wynder in the US and Richard Doll and Austin Bradford Hill is a mere footnote and not worth further elaborating. No, smoking is a wonderful experience - and haven't you heard it: "Tobacco has recently been discovered to protect against some of the most devastating ailments of old age, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease." So that superb pleasure is on the way to become a wonder drug ! It's an insult to the readers' intelligence.
A recent study from the Harvard School of Public Health estimates that approximately 1 billion (yes: BILLION) people will die of tobacco-related diseases over the course of the 21th century. Gatley predicts that tobacco habits (translation: rude and ignorant people forcing their fellow human beings to inhale carcinogens by exposing them to secondhand smoke) will be with us for centuries to come. Good Lord - or wise lawmakers everywhere - protect us from this dark future !
For a medical doctor and a historian like me, "Tobacco" is one of the must repulsive books I've ever read. It makes you wonder which Big Tobacco company sponsored it - or whether it was a joint venture by the whole industry.

In the begining, the historical information was interesting and quite believable, but by the end accuracy and credibility were suspect. Perhaps an update to include studies released since the book's publication (i.e. the 2006 Surgeon General's Report on Secondhand Smoke) would correct the book's biased slant towards tobacco.

A very entertaining and well written history, but the passionate arguments against government taxation and regulation of smoking (hot political topics these days) are hard to take seriously.
Gately denies that second hand smoke poses any danger at all to non-smokers. He is convinced that advertising restrictions, cigarette taxes, public smoking bans, and public service ads have no effect on how much people actually smoke. (They merely infringe on the "rights of smokers.") He ridicules the notion that cigarette smoke could be harmful to children.
His humor is usually enjoyable, but it is sometimes inappropriate (smoking-related deaths are actually a fairly serious matter), and it is sometimes hard to tell when he is joking. For example, he cites UK government data that smokers die 16 years earlier than non-smokers and talks about all the money this saves the government in pensions, adding, "It follows that it would be financial madness for the British government to ban smoking, and unless a better argument than its official estimated death toll of 120,000 smokers per annum can be found, smoking is unlikely to be prohibited in the British Isles." Is this funny? Am I supposed to laugh or cry?
Gately frequently comes across as a loving mother who has discovered her son is a killer and has not quite come to terms with the fact. She can't help wishing for him to succeed, even while acknowledging her sympathy is problematic and recognizing the irony of her situation.
Still, only a true tobacco believer could write in his concluding paragraph that "to the 1.2 billion smokers of the world, tobacco is not just a killer, but a pleasure, a comforter, and a friend... Tobacco has recently been discovered to protect against some of the most devastating ailments of old age, including Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease. It has also been shown to guard against cancer of the womb.... Many great men and women have left elegant testimonies to their tobacco habits, which will be joined, I believe, with others made in centuries to come."
History and Perspective that's Easy to Read.......2005-07-07
I really enjoy these kinds of books. Unlike others that are painfully academic to read, this one moves along smoothly while providing the history and background on the cultural, social, agricultural, economic, and political aspects of this plant. Get some seeds and try growing your own - even if just for ornamental reasons.

The author is one in all: a photographer, a writer and a graphic designer. He is great with photography but writing and book designing should be left for a professional. Book is unorganized. Not enough descriptions for each varieties. Chapters jump around. Page layout is very amateurish. This should not have been a book but a PowerPoint slides show instead.

This is the best book yet for plumeria photo's that are true to life, the pictures are that good it makes you almost want to bend down and smell the pages. This is a must have for every plumeria lover and it will be well read once you do get a copy, especially if you have it on your coffee table. Even non plumeria growers will enjoy the photo's in these pages, they are just so vibrant , anyone that has an interest in flowers will be nothing short of amazed and find it hard to put down, I know I did.

Willow Zuchowski and Turid Forsyth have created a beautiful overview of Costa Rican vegetation. The photography is wonderful, giving enough detail of individual plants that readers get an accurate sense of what they are looking at. The text has an interesting diversity of information, ranging from plant taxonomy to medicinal uses to pollination strategies. I used the book with a Tropical Botany class, and the students not only loved the book, but found it to be an excellent size which is easy to carry in the field or store in a backpack. The habitat descriptions are well-written and provide the reader with a good idea of what to expect in different parts of Costa Rica.
A very handy plant guide for visitors to Costa Rica.......2007-09-06
I picked up a copy of this guide (published in San Jose by Zona Tropical) at La Selva last year and consider it a worthy addition to the small library I carry in Costa Rica. I would recommend it as the most useful single volume work on Costa Rican plants.
The guide is aimed at the amateur rather than the professional botanist: photographs are the prime means of identification, plants are presented out of family order (more below) and there are no keys. Nevertheless, it is quite possible to identify a good many of the country's commoner plants using this guide.
The order of the plants is:-
1. colourful-flowering trees
2. non-colourful-flowering trees
3. roadside and garden exotics
4. crop plants
5. living fences (so characteristic of Costa Rica)
6. special habitats, e.g. dry forests, cloud forests, beaches & mangroves
7. quintessentially tropical groups, e.g. bromeliads, palms & orchids
8. grasses
There is emphasis on those plants that are likely to be most conspicuous to the visitor. This often means a bias towards exotic species rather than natives. However, this does mean that the book is useful outside Costa Rica and I will be referring to it throughout the American tropics.
Once a plant is identified a comments section provides a host of useful information.
Well worth the price! I will definitely be taking it back with me on my next trip.

Great looking book, with tons of info!.......2007-06-06
Okay, I've only just received this book and have not had time to test it "in the field". However, I know people who have, and they say it's a great book, and that is my impression from just looking it over, as well.
It has tons of color photos and the pages aren't super thin, either. It looks like it will hold up well over time, and it is exactly what I was looking for!
I'm sure as I use it I will probably find things that could be better (maybe not?), but all I can say is it's a really big book with tons of info and lots of photos and it looks like it is just what I was looking for.

I bought this book about 10 years ago and it turned into my Florida "Bible". Just about every plant, especially garden plants, is included. On one page you can see all the necessary information that is needed to be a successful Florida gardener.
I loaned it to a friend, a plant "nut", recently transplanted from Pennsylvania. She was trying to grow plants the old northern way, which wasn't working out. Eventually success is growing in her garden.
The book became a Christmas gift and a "Welcome to Florida" gift (and a gift for me, my old book is very worn) this year. Use it and enjoy.
The Florida plant chronicles.......2005-12-31
FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS lists native and non-native plants growable in the northern, central or southern parts of the state. It's an updated version of the late Professor John V Watkins' book. Professor Watkins taught landscape horticulture at the University of Florida. But he was well known outside the campus, for his gardening- and landscape-related radio series and writings published as books and magazine articles.
Professors Thomas J Sheehan and Robert J Black fill the empty space left with Professor Watkins' death. They've added to and modernized his classic landscape plant manual. Throughout, they've stayed true to Professor Watkins' original mission of writing for an audience of university students, nurserymen, master gardeners, and homeowners of our Gulf states.
Their book is nicely organized for that purpose. There's a listing of over 400 plants. The book closes with a helpful model planting guide, list of invasives, glossary, and an index of common and scientific names.
Their book gives more information and puts in more plants than the original work by Professor Watkins. But their book isn't comprehensive. It's not a case of everything Professor Watkins listed, along with add-ons. In fact, they've left out some "old favorites," partly because some have been called "invasive" by the Florida Exotic Plant Council. In part, too, they wanted the book to fall within the page range known as "popular size."
FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS is nevertheless very workable, with a lot of clearly illustrated and organized information and with no useless information. Each plant is listed by common name. The scientific name is given below, with the way to say it and the English meaning. There's also a sketch of each plant. I miss the beauty of color drawings and photos. But the black-and-whites are so well done that the plants should be easily known by form and shape, often more telling than color.
The information is conveniently slotted into family; relatives; type of plant; height [in Florida]; zone [in north, central or south Florida]; how to identify; habit of growth; foliage; flowers; fruits; season of maximum color; landscape uses; habitat; light and soil requirement; salt tolerance; availability; culture; propagation; and pests. Sometimes, there's a note slot, such as for sweet acacia "This plant is cultivated in the south of France for its flowers, which are made into a very fine perfume."
FLORIDA LANDSCAPE PLANTS would be an interesting read not only for gardeners and landscapers. I was impressed with how many of the plants are already common household words as household plants: Dieffenbachia, ficus, jade plant, spider plant, and wandering jew. Others are already known as "public places" trees, such as my favorites: American hornbeam, black olive, geiger, gumbo limbo, lignum vitae, red maple, river birch, and southern magnolia. Still others are already known as rock garden plants, such as my favorites: agave, aloe, aluminum plant, bush zinnia, Florida yew, kalanchoe, peperomia, ponytail palm, prickly pear, royal fern, spineless yucca, and variegated pineapple. And still others are already known as water garden plants, such as my favorites: African iris, Asiatic jasmine, black tupelo, firecracker plant, galingale, ginger lily, oleander, peperomia, pittosporum, primrose jasmine, sweet bay, and torch ginger.
It was particularly interesting to see how many of my favorites were listed as natives, such as: Adam's needle, beauty berry, buttonwood, coontie, frangipani, fringe tree, seven year apple, Spanish bayonet, sweet shrub, and tulip tree. In many cases, with natives we reduce the use of hazardous materials such as pesticides. For natives have their own natural controls. They're part of wider plant, bug, bird and animal communities that have built up a balance between over- and under-population in the same space over the same time. Just as important, natives reduce yardwaste. So many have attractive flowers, fruits and parts that can be reused as and recycled into artistic creations, such as dried bouquets and holiday wreaths.

I purchased this book because it was highly recommended in a Florida Gardening magazine. I am new to Florida recently moving here from the Northeast. I was looking for someway to link plants I see in neighbors' yards with what might work in our spaces.
The only thing I was disappointed in is that the book's pictures are not in color. Colors would help me better link plants I see with what's in the book.

This is a worthwhile book for a number of reasons, however, it has one major omission. The positive factors: 1) Excellent plant descriptions including details like salt tolerance level; 2) wonderful (and most appreciated) treatment of botanic names by giving the pronunciation and derivation of the Latin words (Thanks!). The omission concerns color photographs of the plants discussed. The publisher included a few color pages of plant drawings which are mostly useless and confusing. A good garden book needs to have extensive color photographs. I am sure that the author would agree!!
The absolute last word on Florida Landscape Plants!.......1999-05-24
This is the text book used to teach horticulture classes and plant identification at the University of Florida. All Horticulture graduates and Landscape Architecture graduates at UF have studied from this book. Dr.s Watkins and Sheehan have put more than 5 decades of combined Florida horticultural expertise into this book.

Stephen D. McCloud heard about the Center in a casual conversation with a friend, and decided to take his camera and visit. In the last three years, McCloud and his camera have spent hundreds of hours at the Center. He has taken the time to get to know each of the cats: their likes, their dislikes, their quirks, and their stories. The affection he has for them is clearly reflected in his photographs. It's an incredible collection, and choosing only 100 or so for the book proved a daunting task.
A portion of the proceeds from each sale of this book will be donated to The Exotic Feline Rescue Center.

Wonderful Pictures...even better cause!.......2007-01-16
This is a wonderful overview of the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. Stephen McCloud has obviously fallen in love with the cats at the center and it shows. There are SO many animals that have fallen victim to the exotic pet trade...the Feline Rescue Center provides a safe haven for some of the lucky ones, that now call it home. This book provides an intimate look at some of the rescues living at the center and allows the reader to look at the cats on a more personal level. The exotic pet trade is a HUGE problem in our world today and only with the help of people like Mr. McCloud educating people through photographs and information on their plight, will more people get involved and raise the necessary funds to end the vicious cycle. Wild animals belong in the WILD, not behind bars or in canned hunts for trophies. The Exotic Feline Rescue Center provides as close to a natural environment that is able for these poor cats forced to live in captivity. Stephen McCloud does a wonderful job with stories backed up by fabulous pictures.

The book does the Exotic Feline Rescue Center justice. Stephen has captured the animals through wonderful photography. My granddaughter loved the center and enjoys the book.

If you love big cats like I do this is the ultimate book. Filled with striking photographs and heart-wrenching-yet-uplifting stories, I was flooded with emotion as I read. Lots of emotions. This is not an easy read, especially when confronted with stories of people abusing these majectic animals or forcing them to travel en masse in the back of a Volkswagon van... but these lions, tigers, cheetahs, panthers and lynx have all been very fortunate to be part of this book. The photos are as beautiful as they are intimate and it's like the photographer has actually captured a tiny bit of each cat's personality. BUY THIS BOOK.
Saving Grace.......2006-05-22
The Exotic Feline Rescue Center is the saving grace to somewhere around 170 big cats (they have acquired more since the publishing of this book). This book could be a great teacher to the world (especially breeders and private owners) about the realities of sending these beautiful creatures out into the world as "pets". I have been to the compound in Center Point a number of times, and have taken a LOT of pictures, but the pictures in this book are the most beautiful ones I've seen. And the stories can be heartbreaking, too. The way some people have treated these creatures of God is appalling, as you will read in this book. But there is a light at the end of the tunnel. And that tunnel ends at Center Point, Indiana in the Exotic Feline Rescue Center. I recommend you buy this book, and have your friends buy this book. Everyone will enjoy it, and hopefully learn something from it. And a portion of the proceeds will go to the EFRC, and every little bit helps.

A must have for professionals.......2000-06-07
This book is a must have for professionals in the horticulture industry, especially if you are working in a tropical or sub-tropical environment. It is also easy to understand for the home gardener! The descriptions are truly great and there is a color picture of almost every plant mentioned. I have borrowed a friend's copy numerous times to get information for work. I definatly recommend finding a copy for yourself.

Incredible Book.......2003-11-12
It was approximately 25 years ago when I first encountered this book at my university library (Clemson U). I came across it one day while doing some research. At this time tropical/house plants were becoming the rage. This book, loaded with photos of specimens, showed the incredible variety of plants I was not aware of. I spent a good bit of my study time pouring over the pages and taking inventory of plants. It's worth tracking down to purchase a copy.

I have been searching for this book for 7 years. I could only turn to the libraries and the government Parks Board for reference. So i would very much appreciate if your company could make it available in the market.
It is a brilliant book for reference especially if one is in the industry. I have not come across any books that could come close to Graf's compilation of plants. I am also very interested in his other book Tropica which is also not been made available in the market. So please could i at least order the book from this review column
The most thorough pictorial book on plants that's out........1998-05-31
I have the Series 3 Seventh Edition. It is the best pictorial book on identifying plants that is out and if you are so lucky to purchase one, you will be envied by your fellow gardners. They are scarce and those who have these books treasure them and do not give them up.
Brilliant.......1997-12-13
I bought my version in 1967 and consider it to be the best illustrated horticultural book I have seen. I still have it. It does suffer a major disadvantage in that it is too thick for one volume making it very unstable to read on your lap,the danger being that it's weight will cause it to drop off while you are holding a page. I have not seen Exotica 4 and would appreciate knowing what changes were made if that is possible. I have to be fair though and tell you that I will not be buying. Thankyou.
