Book Description
Black maples can tower to eighty-five feet. Artisans craft fine musical instruments from the wood of native red spruces. And in autumn, the leaves of sugar maples turn brilliant orange-gloriously coloring Penn's Woods. The naturalist, forester, or weekend observer will discover all this and more in Trees of Pennsylvania.
Written by botanists at the Morris Arboretum, the official arboretum of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, this is the most comprehensive, authoritative, and accessible field and natural history guide to the state's tree life. Ann Rhoads and Timothy Block cover all of Pennsylvania's 195 trees, both native and naturalized. Each species is described in a concise, tabular format that includes the characteristics of leaves, branches, bark, flowers, and fruits. The authors discuss flowering and fruiting time, autumn leaf color, and the size of the largest specimen recorded within the state. Rhoads and Block further provide valuable historical, ecological, and economic information on each tree species, including how Pennsylvania's trees were used by Native Americans and early European settlers.
This fully illustrated, user-friendly volume contains a combination of line drawings by botanical artist Anna Anisko, color photographs, range maps, and identification keys so readers will be able accurately to identify each tree species. It also offers useful information on the biology of trees, the history of Pennsylvania's many forests, and important lists of the endangered, threatened, and rare trees within the state. This is an indispensable guide for anyone interested in Pennsylvania's natural history and tree life.

Excellent reference .......2007-04-28
This book is a bit expensive. However, if you have an above interest in trees, this is a must have book. It's the one book I continue to return to for details, guidance, and reference. It's well written and also feels good in the hands for just casual reading.
Trees of Pennsylvania.......2006-02-26
The Trees of Pennsylvania is the best reference text for the tree flora of the state. It is written by two outstanding botanists who have visited all of Pennsylvania and are very familiar with the species and the forests of the region. This is a reference text and not a field guide. However, it is a book that you must have if you intend to learn the trees of PA. The text is well written, it is detailed as to the descriptions and identification of species, pages contains range maps that were derived from herbarium specimens not taken from other references, and there are an assortment of outstanding photographs and line drawings. If you're interested in Pennsylvania natural history and trees, this is a MUST HAVE.

Wrong country.......2003-05-22
This book is written by a British writer for a British audience. It is of limited value in the US. Many of the trees shown are not available here. The language is of course British and the meanings of some of the words used are not readily apparent to an American reader. The book does contain good information (for a Brit).
Good Choice.......2000-05-01
This books looks to be an excellent choice for someone having difficulty deciding what sort of trees to plant. It's got what you want - pictures of lots of different trees, advice on tree shapes, sizes, climate soils etc. Also nicely presented.

Customer Reviews:
See the real Boston.......2000-08-30
We travel all over the world and use local guides for each region or city we visit. This guide covers the most visited sites as one expects. It also introduces the reader to Boston as the locals see it. We find the best memories of a visit to a new city are the small, colorful exciting places found amoung the well known landmarks. A small farmers market behind the Museum of Art where the neighborhood shops. A pub with authentic Irish music but without the tourist crowd. These flavor a visit and make it special. The author searches for these and helps make our visit better. If you can't see all the places in the book, he writes in a style that makes the book a good read in the hotel room or airplane.
By far the best Boston travel book.......1999-03-30
Last year, anticipating the arrival of out of town family, I bought Jeff Perk's Massachussetts Handbook. I have lived in New England for 15 years but am still, of course, an outsider. I found tons of wonderful information and suggestions in the Mass. Handbook, so when the Boston Handbook came out I snatched that one up too. This is a great book for literate people visiting Boston. It covers the whole historical, literary, and artistic scene better than any of its competitors, and it is wonderfully well written as well. Beside highbrow information, he also includes wonderful material on Boston parks, as well as doing a great job with moderately priced eating places and hang-outs. The book assumes, it seems to me, that the reader is well-educated, interested in history and culture, without a lot of money to spend. If that fits your profile, you couldn't buy a better guide book. My only real gripe with the book is that he doesn't do the restaurants in East Boston where some of the most interesting cheap food is to be had.

Book Description
As one of our greatest presidents, the very atmosphere that surrounds the legacy of Abraham Lincoln borders on legend. To some, even the mere suggestion that Abraham Lincoln was born anywhere other than where traditional history books tell us might seem absurd.
However, there is much about the 16th president we still do not know, even though countless books on him have been written. Among the mysteries of the man are his beginnings, which include persistent stories of his illegitimate birth in North Carolina, and the evidence that suggests Thomas Lincoln was given a ready-made family.
"The Tarheel Lincoln" explores the past of Abraham Lincoln, analyzing the likelihood of his actual birth to Nancy Hanks and a prosperous mountaineer. The story has traveled through the Appalachian hills for almost 200 years now, and despite vehement denials by those who had much to lose in the revelation, it remains a topic of lively speculation. Examining this possibility provides some satisfying answers to much of the mystery that surrounds his background, birth and early childhood. For example, Abraham's striking physical, emotional and intellectual differences from Tom Lincoln, his promotion of North Carolina Democrats during his administration and his guarded approach to the circumstances of his own birth are all brought into better perspective after asking the question, "Was Abraham Lincoln a Tarheel?"
The quest for Lincoln's origins is a fascinating adventure, filled with interesting historical individuals who played parts in this drama, either to clarify or cloud the true story of where a wily politician who became president, and left an indelible mark on the United States, got his start.
Customer Reviews:
Well-researched, true story.......2004-07-31
The authors set forth the premise that Abraham Enloe, a prosperous Western North Carolina landowner, was the biological father of Abraham Lincoln, rather than Thomas Lincoln as the history books would have it. From childhood to very early adulthood, Nancy Hanks, Abraham Lincoln's mother, was a bond servant in the Enloe home. The authors quote many sworn, witnessed statements of well-respected citizens and Enloe relatives interviewed in the 1800s. These people remembered the scandal of Nancy Hanks, Abraham Enloe and their illegitimate son, Abraham. Even the pastor performing Tom Lincoln's marriage to Nancy Hanks remembered seeing young Abraham at the wedding in 1806, precluding the official story line that Abraham Lincoln was born three years after the Lincoln - Hanks marriage. Additionally, the authors point out abundant inconsistencies which make the official Kentucky birth story impossible. At least 4 other books and numerous magazine and newspaper articles were written about this subject in the late 1800s and early 1900s, many quoted extensively by the authors.
If prior to reading this book, I had never heard this version of Lincoln's birth and early life, I would believe it because of the authors' painstaking research. However, I have heard this story all my life because my great, great, great grandfather was Abraham Enloe. During her early childhood, my grandmother lived with Abraham Enloe's legitimate son, Wesley (her grandfather and Abraham Lincoln's look-alike half-brother) in the house on the Oconaluftee River where much of the story takes place. It was she who passed the story to me.
Abraham Lincoln's parentage does not change his achievements or his tremendous legacy to this country. He overcame poverty, lack of formal schooling, child abuse, the loss of his mother, and many other difficulties to become one of our greatest presidents. If you add to this list the stigma of illegitimacy, it just gives us more insight into the strength and determination of this incredible man's character.
New stuff here.......2004-03-05
Anyone interested in Lincoln will learn from the family accounts and traditions of the Enloe family of North Carolina. Plus the pictures - I had not seen a picture of Thomas Lincoln. The resemblance between Lincoln and what could be his half brother - Wesley Enloe, is startling. I had just finished reading David Donald's "Lincoln's Herndon" about the life of Lincoln's Springfield, IL law partner. So, much of the last half of the book seemed repetitious. I would buy the book again.

Book Description
Helen Keller, Time Magazine's woman of the century, reveals her mystical side in this best-selling spiritual autobiography. Writing that her first reading of Emanuel Swedenborg at age fourteen gave her truths that were to my faculties what light, color and music are to the eye and ear, she explains how Swedenborg's works sustained her throughout her life.
This new edition includes a foreword by Dorothy Herrmann, author of the acclaimed Helen Keller: A Life, and a new chapter, Epilogue: My Luminous Universe.
Customer Reviews:
Light in My Darkness.......2006-12-15
Helen Keller was born June 27,1980 in Tuscumbia Alabama. Her father was an officer for the Confederate army and her mother was a wife. Keller wasn't born deaf and blind that started once she got older. She was about 14 months olds when she started the Perkins School for the Blind. As she grew older she moved to New York to attend Wright Humason School for the deaf. She went to Radcliff college in 1900 and graduated four years later. She died June 1, 1958 in Eastern Conneticut.

I could not wait to get done........2005-03-27
I have always been very impressed with the life of Helen Keller. The difficulties she overcame in life were phenomenal. This book, however, was not interesting to me in the least. I am sad to hear about how she moved away from her traditional Christian background and followed the false teachings of Swedenborg. The book is more about Swedenborg than it is about Helen. It is a strong promotion of Swedenborg's New Church. She claims that he had a special ability from God to find the truth in scripture. The problem is, he like all other cult founders, only takes portions of scripture and uses them out of context. He claimed to have special revelations that no one else ever did. Beware of anyone who makes such claims. According to the book, Helen was pretty silent on her beliefs for the last thirty eight years of her life. I hope she was silent out of her realization that Swedenborg is not master of the truth, but Jesus is the truth instead. I do not recommend you use your time reading this book. It can be spent much more wisely.
Touching Story, Stunning Ideas.......2003-05-10
This book was not only touching because of Helen Keller's fascinating story, but also an uplifting reassurance that life is worth living. Her ideas, those from and about Emanuel Swedenborg, strike me as poingantly true. Helen Keller's unique perspective on the world adds an amazing depth and reality to this work. I absolutly reccomend it for anyone and everyone.
Beautiful!.......2000-09-08
I really enjoyed reading this book. It made me look again at what I believe and see it more clearly. This is a great introduction to the ideas of Emanual Swedenborg and the New Church.
Wonderfully informative, inspiring reading........2000-06-06
The newly revised and updated second edition of Helen Keller's autobiography originally published in 1927 includes a substantial foreword by Keller biographer Dorothy Herrmann. The deaf, dumb and blind Helen Keller (1880-1968) became an internationally known spokesperson for the blind. Her amazing story of being taught to communicate by Annie Sullivan is very well know. But what is not so well known Keller's faith in the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg whose spiritual vision gave her "the light in my darkness, the voice in my silence". Light In My Darkness is wonderfully informative and inspiring reading and this splendid edition will re-introduce a most remarkable woman to a whole new generation of readers.

Each book in this powerful Civil War trilogy from award-winning novelist Lynn Austin's powerful Civil War trilogy offers a unique and shattering perspective on the conflict while exploring the deep affect the war had on the faith of a nation.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Civil War Series.......2007-06-09
This is an excellent series of books on the Civil War! Although the story line is fictional, they are laced with true history regarding the Civil War. I could hardly put these books down, wondering what would happen next or what decisions the characters would make. We are homeschoolers, and I plan to have my high schoolers read the series for part of our Civil War History unit. They will love them!!!
Great History Lesson For Teens.......2007-03-30
We read the Chronicles of the Kings by Lynn Austin as a family, and because of that (they were "awesome"), my 15 year old daughter wanted to read everything possible that Lynn Austin has written. She read the Refiner's Fire and loved them so much she couldn't put them down, and even read one of the books twice. These volumes will teach your child more about the Civil War that will be unforgettable then any history textbook you'll ever find on the subject.
Wonderful series swept me back in time.......2007-01-16
Amazing series of 3 books from 3 different points of view. These books were heart-tugging page turners! I felt like I really got to know the characters. I felt like I was there in the 1860's.
Fantastic historical fiction. By far one of my favorite series of books. They can even stand alone, especially # 2.
Highly recommended!
Awsome series!!!.......2006-08-11
These books grab you and don't let go..... I read Candle in the Darkness twice now and the second time was better because you can really grasp the message. I hope she will continue this series in another book putting them all together.
Refiner's fire series.......2006-05-02
I just finnished the third book in this series and have been very impressed with the stories. I really enjoyed Fire by Night. The stories had great messages of courage and enduring the trials that God puts into our lives to mold and shape us so we can become His. The books, though religious in nature, were not obviously one denomination or another. They just held simple truths that all christian religions could appreciate. GOOD STUFF!!!!!!!!!!

Book Description
This is a book for everybody, young and old, rich and poor. It is filled with life lessons that apply to everyone. It tells the true story of a young girl who courageously fought against the darkness in her life, both physical and spiritual. Rosalie was born blind but, with the help of family, battled and overcame many hurtles in her way. She then came down with rheumatoid arthritis at age ten. This doubly-challenged girl gave her heart and life to Jesus Christ at eleven. With this decision, the spiritual darkness was lifted for, darkness is nothing but the absence of light. When the Light of the world came in, she became a new creation in Him, but the physical and some emotional challenges continued. At age twelve, a lifelong dream came true for her that would further change her life. The story follows her partway through college. She is now working on a sequel.

My journey through the experiences I share with you in this book began when my youngest son was killed. His name was Joey. I used to write him poems to take when I visited the cemetery, tie them to balloons and then release them, hoping to reach him in Heaven. I started to become more aware of all the other children that were being killed in so many ways, by killers, abuse by parents or friends, drugs, suicide, and gang violence. I would think, It's just not fair! Not only has another child died, but they were someone's child. Another mother, father, grandparent and friend will have to feel their heart shattering for eternity, always having tears in their eyes.

Light Beyond the Darkness, How I Healed My Suicide Son After.......2001-05-22
Dore Deverell has written a remarkable book describing both her and her son Richard's transformtion and healing after he committed suicide. This book shows how, through diligence and faith, spiritual darkness can be transmuted into wisdom, energy and new life. An eloquent and straightforward narrative tells a story in two parts: a painful, oppressive life in suburban Los Angeles spanning decades, and, after a turning point coinciding with Richard's tragic death, a spiritual path, realized and fortified through anthroposophy, the modern wisdom and spiritual-scientific methods hearlded by Dr. Rudolf Steiner (1861 - 1925).
A good reading............2000-08-06
This a good reading. Good, not great, not bad. Deverell's writing is clear and concise, and she keeps your attention. The only problem I have with this book is that there is too much emphasis on other books. She spends a great deal of time referring to other authors and experts in the field, and I would have enjoyed her spending more time on her own story.

Light of My Darkness is the true story of a young girl who can talk to no one about what she feels. The birth of her brother brings to life the fear she has hidden deep within her heart. Hatred toward herself for hating her mother leads to her confinement in the State Hospital for the mentally ill at age sixteen. A broken marriage, an unforgivable sin, a lost job, and two other hospital confinements forced this young woman to find real answers to the problems in her life. This is a message of hope and faith that abounds with inspirational analogies and helpful coping strategies gained from years of firsthand experience as a sufferer of mental illness. Offering poignant insight that encourages readers to see God's faithfulness in affliction, this personal account will inspire anyone associated with mental illness.
Customer Reviews:
Inspirational!.......2004-01-29
Congratulations to an author who tells it like it is! Whether you are a "diagnosed" individual or just struggling with day to day "stress", benefits and insight are obtainable just by reading this book. Truly an inspiration for all!
Hope and Encouragement.......2004-01-29
Light of My Darkness is a message of hope and encouragement to all those who struggle with depression. It is also full of hope and help for family members who desire to better understand and reach out to their loved one.
Light of My Darkness.......2004-01-05
Carolyn Reese's Light of My Darkness is written by a person who has a severe mental illness about her experiences with that illness. It is an amazing story of one person's courageous attempt to deal with the effects of mental illness and how her Christian faith helped give her the strength to do so. It if full of hope and provides one example that people with severe mental illness can recover from that illness to enjoy a meaningful and productive life. This book is readable for a general audience. It also is very appropriate as a supplemental textbook in college courses that include content on mental illness and those that include content on the role of religion and spirituality in health and mental health treatment. It offers students a vivid picture of what mental illness is like, including the symptoms that some people experience, as well as the affect of the illness on individual's self-perception and self-confidence. I highly recommend this book to nonprofessionals, mental health and health professionals, and students!
Interesting and informative.......2003-12-14
I recently read Light of My Darkness and found it to be an interesting and informative book. It is the story of a young girl and her struggle to survive the darkness of a mental illness. The book chronicles her agonizing journey through many years of despair and hopelessness. When she began to look at God, study His Word, memorize scripture and apply them to her life, the light began to penetrate the dark world she lived in. Light of My Darkness is a book that offers encouragement to hurting people. Through scriptures, spiritual insights and self helps, Carolyn shows how God can bring healing and hope to those in despair.
