Helpful hints for those moving to the Upper Midwest........2007-05-13
Since we live in the South, but are building a cabin in Northern Wisconsin, we were at a loss for landscape ideas. General gardening books and catalogs do not specify a broad range of trees and shrubs to successfully grow in this climate. Rather than giving the reader generalized information about a specimen, this author provides detailed facts about the necessary soil, water, sunshine, and other care. Included are types of problems including temperature, susceptibility for diseases, insects, fungi, and any other difficulties the specimen may attract. In addition, ideas for placement and the positive aspects of each item are detailed. The pictures and clear prose make this a must for even the practiced gardener.
Product Description
Tree identification can be easy and enjoyable for everyone! This field guide features professional, full-page photos and comprehensive, accessible information about each tree's leaves or needles, bark, mature size, fall color, state-specific range map and more. The author's notes include helpful identification tips and interesting "gee-whiz" facts. Each book covers more than 65 common trees and is a great size for use in the field.
Book Description
"Sparky" Stensaas leads you into the vast North Woods-introducing you to ninety-six of the most common trees, shrubs, wildflowers, fungi, ferns, lichens, and other plants you're likely to encounter during your travels north. Detailed line drawings and brief plant profiles help you recognize what you're seeing, while Sparky's fascinating tales draw you into a deeper understanding of the plants' natural and cultural histories.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful book for Northwoods Enthusiasts.......2007-04-24
This is a wonderful book to take on any Northwoods canoetrip as the author includes most of the flora one is likely to encounter there (all entries are grouped under the major headings: Trees, Shrubs, Wildflowers, Ferns, Clubmosses, Horsetails, Moss, Lichens, and Fungi; there are about 90 entries in total). Designed for the layman (like myself), the sections are brief but informative, without all kinds of hyper-technical jargon. Especially nice is that the author includes the [non]edibility of most of the entries, along with fun ideas and useful tidbits. His own kid-like love for the flora of the North is also evident and is always refreshing. My only "complaint" is that there are only black and white drawings of the entires. For the layman like me, this makes identification harder (hence only four stars, though, I gather this is also what makes the book affordable!). I've supplemented my copy by printing out color pictures of each entry. All told, entirely worth the money for Northwoods hikers, canoeists, and nature lovers.
Entertaining and informative, if somewhat oversized.......2000-06-12
A great read, either at home or in the woods. Sparky describes many of the trees and plants you're likely to encounter in the Northwoods and adds historical uses, points of interest and random facts. Each entry is accompanied by a decent line drawing. The book is a bit awkward for a field guide (9x8) but it's such an enjoyable book to have along I always end up carrying it. Indespensible for Northwoods canoeing.

Bravo to Jeff Forester.......2007-04-21
Kudo's to Jeff Forester for doing proper research and then telling it like it is. This book is well written, has great photo's, and is a must for anyone interested in the effects that we have on our environment.
Top-notch book on forest ecology.......2006-07-11
Journalist Jeff Forester gives us a well-balanced history of American logging and its effects on both the American psyche and forest ecology. A solid, well-documented and engaging read.
A Must-Read for Anyone Who Loves the Woods.......2004-09-07
Every time I've been camping, fishing, hunting or hiking in the woods, I've had a hankering to see them the way they looked when the pioneers first got to this country--you know, Laura Ingalls Wilder envy. And this book really helped me visualize the virgin landscape while understanding how the forests came to look as they do now.
I don't typically read non-fiction, but Forester (the author, not some guy in tan khakis & cap) really has a personal, close up and easy-to-read perspective on the North Woods and the book flows like a novel. Laura Ingalls couldn't have described the changing forest management models any more descriptively: from the fire-setting Indians and small-time pioneer loggers to the huge lumber barons and the birth of environmentalism. The book ends with great food for thought on the current land management practices and restoration forestry (trying to make the woods look like it used to using fire, as the Indians did).
Fascinating story. Incredible photographs.

Wonderful book - 2 Thumbs Up!.......2001-03-28
I purchased this book not knowing anything prior about it or the author, Robert Treuer. I found the book to be thoroughly enjoyable and hard to put down. I have had it for less than a year and have already read it twice. I highly recommend the book for anyone who is a nature lover, has strong family values, or has ever dreamed of (or experienced) living in the country.
Gentle intense love of the earth, family and its bond.......1999-06-21
A gentle flow of beautiful words and thought, all coming together to expose his wonderful view on human and natures life. I will never look at trees, tree farms and those who create and manage them the same again. Treuer has given me new loves--life and the time we borrow our space, and nature. Treuer has surely connected with nature. I recommend it most highly.

Finding the Forest is a series of vignetes that offer a different vision of the forest. This vision challenges many of today's assumptions about trees, preservation and forestry practices.

Interesting Essays.......2007-10-11
This short book is a series of forestry essays on a wide range of topics. The author is a professional forester and has a practical bent to forestry. It is more of an idea book rather than a specific how-to volume. I especially liked the essay on the red pine monoculture plantation.
Excellent for Private Woodland Owners That Like Forests.......1999-09-29
Peter's stories reflect a personal evolution of thought about forests and forestry. The episodic events are weaved into a colorful anthology of tales that are easy reading but can be deeply thought provoking. There's a solid base of practical stewardship philosophy that many forest owners would do well to consider. Lessons that have been learned and shared demonstrate a balance between people and nature that is more down-to-earth and applicable than most "nature-writers." The experiences delightfully illustrate a love of forest management tempered by the realities of natural processes. In this age of frequent conflict over natural resource issues, often single-use issues, this book offers a well-written respite that gently explores the quiet process of learning and living with the forest. "Finding the Forest" fits well into the forest landscape. It is simply written and expresses a wealth of unpretentious wisdom.
Important and enjoyable essays on forests........1999-08-27
I read "Finding The Forest" from my personal perspective of having forged a long driveway through our forest, often following hints of old logging roads - having built a home in the woods and watched as the second-growth forest matured around me. I have planted hundreds of trees in near-by fallow fields and gazed with awe and longing at huge white pine stumps found throughout the area. The forest is part of my home and a major part of my photographic travels.
What I discovered in "Finding the Forest" was an affirmation of common feelings, and the guiding hand of an expert offering fresh perspectives, such as in the chapter "Red Pine Maligned." Here, Peter rebuts the common notion of a red pine plantation being "an ecological desert" with a first-hand tour of his growing forest and the diversity found within it.
In a time when debate over forest management policies are often driven more by sentiment than by science, "Finding the Forest" offers woodland owners a good read and an excellent guide to looking at their own forest through the eyes of a professional forester.

Customer Reviews:
Qatar section terribly out of date.......2004-12-15
I bought this book to prepare for my relocation to Qatar (from Australia).
The book is so out of date it is downright useless. For example, even basic information such as visa requirements is wrong (you *can* get a tourist visa when you turn up at Doha airport). And recommendations about what's on, what's good, what's bad are meaningless - many of the things described don't exist any more or have been superceded.
I was seriously considering sending my book to Lonely Planet and asking for my money back, but it's easier to hop onto the web and complain instead. More useful too!
Having said that, I don't know of any other guides to buy instead. My suggestions are:
If you're planning on moving to Qatar, do. Quality of life here is fantastic, except that outdoor activites are curtailed by the heat most of the year. Recommend you get in contact with someone who lives here for tips.
If you're planning on a holiday to Qatar, don't. There is almost nothing here for tourists, except for 4WD'ing on the dunes which is unique and fun (go for Arabian Adventures, they're the best operator). I would recommend instead Oman (for the scenery and Arabic culture) and Dubai (shopping, astonishing real estate developments)
Back to the book: Completely out of date, and you can pick up the history bits off the net. And I'm just talking about the Qatar section here, no comment on the other two countries (but I would *really* question why you would want to go to them)
Great tips for Kuwait & Bahrain.......2004-11-18
I purchaed this book as was traveling extensively between Bahraina and Kuwait - and it was perfect for this. I found the information contained within to be very accurate, and useful in planning my trip.
Bahrain information was spot on - and we managed to follow the complex directions contained to find the Burial grounds, Fort, and basket weavers without hassle. The information on arrival and departure tax into Bahrain was very useful - without this information prior to our travel we might have been refused entry!
I haven't used this book to travel to Qatar, but for Kuwait and Bahrain the information was very useful, and a definite must read before you travel for etiquette and language tips.
Useful, but way out of date..........2003-03-29
I bought this book for a recent business trip to Qatar, and was dissapointed to find quite a number of things that were very out of date. The phone system has been updated since publishing, and now all numbers are 7 instead of 6 digits. you can fix most by adding a 4 at the beginning of most listed numbers, or a 5 for cell phones. Also, some crucial info, like the address to the US Embassy, was wrong. The Embassy moved several years ago. I found most of the societal and historical info to be very handy in preparing for the trip, however, so it was worth it for that.
Great guide, great places, enjoy!.......2001-02-12
I have spent time in all three countries and can say that this book will be invaluable for first time vistors and seasoned traveller alike.
Bahrain with its charming city of Manama, is a Gulf delight, with so many things to see and do. Qatar and espcially Doha is a gem, and Kuwait is exotic, enchanting and modern all at the same time.
There are some great places to eat in all of these places and at good prices (has anyone had a bad meal in the Gulf?) and gives sound advice for people touring the area on a wide range of subjects.
If you are planning to go to Bahrain I would recommend the Mishal Gardens for a Shisha (apple or mixed fruit hubbly bubbly) and the Diplomat Hotel for its great floor show, amongst many things. Also, don't forget to visit the siouk (old shopping markets and shops including gold and real pearls).
Great book! Great destinations!

Wrong mileage.......2006-09-08
I used this book for my travel to Saudi Arabia following the footsteps of Nassir Khusraw, the Persian poet and philosopher who went to Mecca in 1045. According to this book the distance between Medina to Jeddah and Mecca is 390 and 410, respectively. Nassir Khusraw in his "Safarnameh" says the distance between Medina and Mecca is 100 Farsang (about 600 kilometer). I was wondering why he overstimates the distance. In my book, then I added a paragraph explaining the reasons and theorizing that he might have travelled a longer route, due to dangers on the road and search for water. He was always correct in his estimation of the distance between many cities he travelled. Then I found out about MSN Encarta World Atlas. I typed the name of these cities and found out the distance was 629 and 605 kilometer, respectively.
Well done Nassir Khusraw a millenium ago! and Mr. Robison, correct this big mistake as soon as possible. The book has little practical use as far as Mecca and Medina is concerned
Garbage Book.......2000-06-29
First of all this Iranian guy is correct. The official name of this body of water is PERSIAN Gulf. The term Arabian Gulf was invented in 1970s by some Pan Arabists who failed to show up at their geography classes. The author's use of this term shows simply his arrogance and fact that he does not know the region nor its people. By using "Arabian Gulf" he simply wants to impress ignorant Arabs into buying his book.
Other than that his book is useless as it does not touch on the cultural aspects on the region.
Worked well for me.......2000-02-13
Having just returned from a 5 week trip through Oman, UAE, Qatar, and Bahrain I can say that Lonely Planet has again produced an accurate and useful guide. And despite the fact that it is several years old, prices and descriptions were still right. The guide's advice to try to get to the Musandem Peninsula in Oman was a fine piece of advice--it is amazingly beautiful.
And to the person who gave one star to this guide because of it's reference to the "Arabian Gulf": relax. If you say "Persian Gulf" to anyone in the Arab Gulf states they will have no idea what body of water you are talking about. I suppose you would be equally upset if 25 years ago a guidebook to China refered to the capital as "Beijing" instead of the Western imposed name "Peking"?
It's the PERSIAN Gulf not the "Arabian" Gulf.......2000-01-03
The book makes repeated references to the "Arabian Gulf" - but there is no such thing. There is an Arabian Sea, and a Gulf of Oman, and the PERSIAN Gulf, but no "Arabian Gulf" exists. The Persian Gulf is the official name of that body of water, and has been known by that name since ancient times. Even the ancient Greeks referred to it by its correct name. One has to wonder, if Lonely Planet is so willing to pander to the Arab governments of the PERSIAN gulf in this manner by renaming the PERSIAN Gulf, then how accurate can their travelogues really be?
Very practical, essential reference.......1998-09-29
This is an essential reference for any tourist, traveller or expatriate relocating to the Arab Gulf states.
The book's information and advice enable a new-comer to develop a sense for local atmospherics and sensitivities so one adapt, integrate and thrive in the host country culture and in the supportive expatriate communities.
Good coverage of cultural, commercial and logistical (i.e., "Where can I find...?") details.
Highly recommended. Written with imagination, humor, and attention to detail.
FWIW, the earlier (1993) edition of this book I used when I was in the United Arab Emirates and Oman in 1995 was 100% accurate. The maps and guides to local services in the smaller cities were exceptionally helpful.
An impressively well-researched and high-quality work, as is typical of Lonely Planet Press titles.

Book Description
The true story of fearless Irish-American racketeer Danny Green who takes on the mob in the 1970s. The end result is the fall of several Mafia families and the defection of high-ranking mobsters. Author Rick Porrello is a veteran cop who wrote about his mob roots in "The Rise and Fall of the Cleveland Mafia". To Kill the Irishman has been optioned for a major motion picture.
Customer Reviews:
Luck of the Irish.......2007-07-23
This is a great book. Danny Greene's story is almost like a fairy tale. It would make a great movie and it redefines the one man irish gang that TJ English speaks about in "Paddy Whacked". This book is filled with excitement. Only problem with this read is that you must know a thing or two about this story before reading it. Porello doesn't bore you by going into detail and re-explain the breakdown of Cosa Nostra and Union corruption. The book is very short and you must have a sense of what is happening before reading it or you will be lost. I strongly recommend that you read "Paddy Whacked" first and then move on to this. great book!
Chapters Chapters Chapters.......2007-07-10
In this book of 250 pages there's more chapters than information on Danny Greene. There's 50 plus chapters and if this book had a chapter length of regular size there'd be only one chapter on Danny Greene, The reason I bought the book. My advise to readers is spend their money elsewere like on: T.J. English's Paddy Wacked. Irish Mob done right.
Missing link.......2006-07-08
This is a fine book. I grew up in Cleveland and remember the death of Danny Greene. There were a lot of bombings and attempted bombings in the middle 70's. Little did I know that Danny Greene's death was the linchpin to the Mafia nationwide. Rick Porrello's book is a well-researched and well-writen account of how a union local president's death loosened the keystone of the Mafia arch. This would be a great film!
To kill the irishman.......2006-05-22
The book "To kill an Irishman" is about the mafia and how their pursuit to kill a man named Danny Green. This book documents how the mafia came to hate this man and how exactly they killed him. This book is recommended to adults 14 years and older due to violence.
It all starts out with a man named "Angelo (Big Ange) Lonardo". He was the head of the Cleveland mafia (also known as the La Cosa Nostra). The Cleveland mafia tries to find Danny Green for many years, because his involvement in a Cosa Nostra members'. Through the Cosa Nostras journey they come across many obstacles that they have to overcome in order to avenge their good friend's murder. This is another wonderful work of Rick Porello who documents every event associated with the killing of Danny Green. Porello fills the book full of action and violence to keep you into the book. If you're looking for a book filled with twists and turns and also interested in La Cosa Nostra than this is the book for you.
Excellent read, compelling story!.......2006-04-05
Rick Porello has succeeded in giving a very clear account of the rise of a mob figure, and the ultimate demise of both him and his adversaries, ultimately weaking La Cosa Nostra nationwide. It does not surprise me that this book might lead to a movie, since it perfectly lays out a compelling true story script.
