    Book Description

The longleaf pine ecosystem, once one of the most extensive ecosystems in North America, is now among the most threatened. Over the past few centuries, land clearing, logging, fire suppression, and the encroachment of more aggressive plants have led to an overwhelming decrease in the ecosystem’s size, to approximately 2.2% of its original coverage. Despite this devastation, the range of the longleaf still extends from Virginia to Texas. Through the combined efforts of organizations such as the USDA Forest Service, the Longleaf Alliance, and the Nature Conservancy, extensive programs to conserve, restore, and manage the ecosystem are currently underway.

The longleaf pine ecosystem is valued not only for its aesthetic appeal, but also for its outstanding biodiversity, habitat value, and for the quality of the longleaf pine lumber. It has a natural resistance to fire and insects, and supports more than thirty threatened or endangered plant and animal species, including the red-cockaded woodpecker and the gopher tortoise.

The Longleaf Pine Ecosystem unites a wealth of current information on the ecology, silviculture, and restoration of this ecosystem. The book also includes a discussion of the significant historical, social, and political aspects of ecosystem management, making it a valuable resource for students, land managers, ecologists, private landowners, government agencies, consultants, and the forest products industry.

Contrary to popular opinion, the whole of New Jersey is not a continuous Superfund site enlivened solely by poorly labeled Turnpike exits and skanky diners. In fact, the largest essentially untouched wilderness east of the Mississippi comprises nearly half the state: the New Jersey Pine Barrens. This more than 1,000-square-mile region has only a few thousand inhabitants--the Pineys, whose way of life has remained essentially unchanged since the 17th century. McPhee--one of the finest American essayists of the 20th century--has written an extraordinarily compelling, informative, and insightful book about the botanical, cultural, hydrological, and historical peculiarities of this region. He also details the efforts to save it from the creeping urbanization of nearby Philadelphia and New York City. Very Highly Recommended.

    Book Description

Most people think of New Jersey as a suburban-industrial corridor that runs between New York and Philadelphia. Yet in the low center of the state is a near wilderness, larger than most national parks, which has been known since the seventeenth century as the Pine Barrens.

The term refers to the predominant trees in the vast forests that cover the area and to the quality of the soils below, which are too sandy and acid to be good for farming. On all sides, however, developments of one kind or another have gradually moved in, so that now the central and integral forest is reduced to about a thousand square miles. Although New Jersey has the heaviest population density of any state, huge segments of the Pine Barrens remain uninhabited. The few people who dwell in the region, the “Pineys,” are little known and often misunderstood. Here McPhee uses his uncanny skills as a journalist to explore the history of the region and describe the people—and their distinctive folklore—who call it home.

5 out of 5 stars Another Treasure from McPhee.......2007-04-11

This time John McPhee turns his hand to one of those
anomalous natural treasures that has survived in
spite of intense urbanization. The Pine Barrens are
two-thirds of a million acres-an area the size of
Yosemite that sit beside a major artery of the most
developed region in the country. With the New Jersey
Turnpike to the west and bustling, chintzy Atlantic
City to the East, it's hard to imagine that this great,
weird wilderness could be so little known.

McPhee is the perfect guide to the Pines. He is as
sensitive to the natural history as he is to the
culture. He has a sympathetic ear for both the natives
and the outsiders who wander in from time to time. He's
a writer who can focus on a detail-a threatened fern or
the quality of water and then pull back to the big picture.

    A thoroughly entertaining book.

5 out of 5 stars Ballad of the Old Pineys.......2006-06-15

Those of us from the Northeast know that wilderness can be found if you're willing to hit the road and search for it, and also that it's precious and worth protecting from the onslaught of industry and sprawl. But even those familiar with the region's wilderness offerings will be surprised by the natural bounty and remoteness of New Jersey's Pine Barrens area. The masterful essayist John McPhee published this travelogue and study of the area back in 1967, when the depths of the Pine Barrens still offered genuine seclusion form the outside world, with hardy folks still living off the land by picking berries or making charcoal. And this beautiful area was surrounded on all sides by the most urbanized and industrialized blight on Earth. Things aren't quite so rustic there anymore, but reading McPhee's engaging treatise on the area should make modern folks wish to both visit the Pine Barrens area as a valuable slice of nature, and to protect it as a precious and dwindling resource. That's what makes this short but lovable book from the great McPhee a timeless classic for nature lovers. [~doomsdayer520~]

My wife gave me this book in 1978, and I devoured it in one evening. I have since been all over the world, and no matter where I go, the pines are always the reference point for me. My teen years were spent in the pines, with my good friend Tom, where we would travel its dirt roads, canoe its streams and fish its lakes, and hike its trails and roads. Mr. McPhee weaves a story that is so true, so historically rich, and for me, so reminiscent of the years of my youth. Please read this book, and then go and make your own memories.

5 out of 5 stars Anything by John McPhee.......2005-10-04

I have read many of John McPhee's works. They are all excellent and captivating. He writes on so many subjects, it is amazing that they are all great. No wonder he teaches at Princeton, or did as I remember.

5 out of 5 stars Must read for all NJ residents.......2005-10-02

I'll keep this short and sweet: McPhee's The Pine Barrens is an entirely outstanding, fascinating look at the unique area that is the Pine Barrens of New Jersey. McPhee covers Piney culture, the unique ecological nature of the region, its history, and its hidden treasures. The writing is poetic and rich, the people interesting, and the information detailed, thorough and never dull. A really great read that anyone living in NJ should get.

5 out of 5 stars Creative way to tell the meaning of Christmas.......2000-10-20

A farm family grows Christmas trees to sell, and the farmer's wife chooses the most beautiful tree for her own family, putting a sign on it, "Not for Sale". But when a poor family comes to the tree lot to see if they can pick out a tree from the free area (trees that have missing branches or crooked trunks), the poor family's little girl sees the beautiful tree and asks if she can choose that one. Everyone is embarrased that she asks, as the adults all know her family can't afford the tree. The farmer's wife responds that she is sorry, the tree isn't for sale...because they'd like the girl's family to have it as a gift. The book ends, "Yes, it was a great sacrifice. But it brought even greater joy. Isn't that just like Christmas?" The illustrations are very kid-friendly and fun. Applicable Bible verses are at the bottom of every other page. A creative and wonderful story.

If you have ever been fascinated by this traditional pattern, you must have this book for your library. You will get your money's worth and then some. Before she ever gets to the 15 projects and their step-by-step instructions, Lois gives a history of the block, shows 48 different variations, and provides basics instructions for hand or strip piecing, appliqué or foundation. There is also a Gallery of quilts, both old and new, providing additional inspiration. Finally, on page 43, we start the projects designed for the book. They range from the simple paper pieced tree made with long strips for each layer of branches to the eye-popping pieced tree with more than 40 triangles. Each pattern is clearly explained with excellent graphics and written instructions. Many of the projects are small, allowing you to try different trees without making a lifetime commitment.

An extra bonus is the gorgeous quilting design that goes with Pine Star wallhanging, a classical beautiful combination of leaves, cones and swirls. It would make an equally impressive appliquéd border design.

    Book Description

Covering 92 million acres from Virginia to Texas, the longleaf pine ecosystem was, in its prime, one of the most extensive and biologically diverse ecosystems in North America. Today these magnificent forests have declined to a fraction of their original extent, threatening such species as the gopher tortoise, the red-cockaded woodpecker, and the Venus fly-trap. Conservationists have proclaimed longleaf restoration a major goal, but has it come too late?

In Looking for Longleaf, Lawrence S. Earley explores the history of these forests and the astonishing biodiversity of the longleaf ecosystem, drawing on extensive research and telling the story through first-person travel accounts and interviews with foresters, ecologists, biologists, botanists, and landowners. For centuries, these vast grass-covered forests provided pasture for large cattle herds, in addition to serving as the world's greatest source of naval stores. They sustained the exploitative turpentine and lumber industries until nearly all of the virgin longleaf had vanished.

Looking for Longleaf demonstrates how, in the twentieth century, forest managers and ecologists struggled to understand the special demands of longleaf and to halt its overall decline. The compelling story Earley tells here offers hope that with continued human commitment, the longleaf pine might not just survive, but once again thrive.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Superb book on several fronts..........2007-10-16

Earley was trying to write a history of turpentining. What he ended up with was a spectacular essay on the natural history of longleaf pine forests, the human history of the forested south, an essay on conflicting views in forestry, and....oh yes...turpentine!

Reading this as an ecologist, I found everything I wanted with just enough of the human element to flesh it out without boring me. Oddly enough, I suspect those reading this from an anthropological view have the same opinion about the natural history aspect of the book. Earley is that good in weaving his tale.

It flows well, is well organized, and the research and references are stunning. Twenty-three pages of references make me wonder how he ever finished the book. (In his acknowledgements he seems to wonder the same thing himself!)

This book belongs on the shelf of every forester, ecologist, and southern historian. I'm just thankful I stumbled across it on a rainy day in Congaree National Park.

5 out of 5 stars complete book about longleaf pines.......2006-11-19

mr. earley goes deep into everything you could want to know about this native tree species,a cornerstone to both the natural world of the southeastern united states and the economic growth and development of the country as a whole.......he tells all about the past history, present day status, and projected outlook of the longleaf pine tree:it's one-time dominance of the coastal plain landscape, compared to it's present day status;all about the naval stores and timber industries, and their heavy dependence upon it that led to it's near demise and current numbers;and the changes in land management of the longleaf forest and it's various ecosystems, with much insight to the controlled burning philosophy that has gained in popularity during the last 50 years or so.....with photos, including some impressive shots of long-gone virgin growth trees dwarfing the grown men standing among them.

5 out of 5 stars Best book on longleaf yet........2005-09-08

This book is as accurate and detailed as any scholarly paper but is written so well that it is certain to be a classic of literature like Archie Carr's "The Windward Road."

    5 out of 5 stars America's Rain Forest.......2004-11-23

For years I have been concerned about the disappearance of the South American Rain Forest. What was shocking from Earley's book is how we had our own expansive Forest with it's own ecosystem and let it disappear before our very eyes without anyone noticing.

It is not only a wonderfully told story of the Longleaf pine but it is a genuine history of how the South's economic development between the time of the settlers and up until today nearly destroyed it's most valuable resource and the ecology that was a part of it.

The only problem with this book was not being able to put it down after I started reading it.

5 out of 5 stars An important history.......2007-09-29

This edited history of Maine is a true masterpiece that explores many facets of this history of the state. The examinations of the lives of Native-Americans, the Wabnaki and others, the role of the French in Acadia and other stories are brought to life here in a series of chronological essays, that are neither obscure nor inundated with academic jargon. The later essays examine the role of Maine in the abolition of slavery, the civil war and the economy. Others discuss Maine's freedom from Massachusetts and the settling of the countryside. Separate sections detailing `further reading' are sometimes helpful, although sometimes they merely direct the reader to hard to find primary sources. The diversity of the essays and the thought that went into them is a joy. The inclusion of numerous maps is also very helpful. A very interesting book, designed initially as a reader or textbook, it is much more than that. It is a scholarly attempt to write the history of Maine and the use of essays in this case does not take away from the general subject.

    Seth J. Frantzman

4 out of 5 stars At last, a modern history.......2001-03-27

Judd and his colleagues have produced the first full scholarly history of the State of Maine in almost a century. The book is really a series of integrated essays that focus on individual themes, such as pre-European history, statehood, industry and agriculture, tourism, and economics. The list of contributors is impressive. Most are faculty at Maine colleges and universities or are associated with cultural and historical institutions. The book is intended for use as a text; the breakdown of chapters along thematic lines allows a reader interested in a particular aspect of Maine history to focus on relevant topics. I recommend it for anyone who has an interest in Maine or New England history

      5 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-28

I look forward to reading this book every single Christmas season. It really touches my heart, and my kids and I talk about it's message after reading it. This is one of my standard baby shower gifts, and a standard gift for kids any time of the year.

      4 out of 5 stars Nice story........2006-12-18

This book is in a poem form, kind of like green eggs and ham. The pine tree is sad because he has grown to big to be a Christmas tree. Its sweet and teaches a pretty good lesson about being thankful for things you have. My kids enjoy it and we read it every year. They are now 20,15,9 and 6. I bought a used board book copy for $2. Definitly worth a look.

      5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2006-12-13

This is the sweetest book, my grandson aged 3 wants to read it all day long. The pictures are so precious and sweet also. It is hard to find a book with such a message as this one as well. Thanks, Granny
