          Book Description

When Colgate-Palmolive and the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) decided to inaugurate a new golf tournament in 1972 under the name of TV star Dinah Shore, who expected all those lesbians to show up? Golf? Who said anything about golf? Within a decade, the tournament week became crowded with comedy concerts, pool parties and tea dances. Promoters reserve entire hotels for the huge flock of lesbians that migrate into town each year, and the dance parties are so large an airplane hangar is required for the 5,000 sunbaked gals. The Dinah Shore tournament is merely an excuse for the year's biggest pool party. This lavishly illustrated, oversize book celebrates all things Dinah, including:

A history of the tournament highlighting the main players-with gaydar ratings for each.
Interviews with club promoters, bartenders, and -partygoers on the evolution of the "Gay Dinah."
An exploration of responses to the phenomenon by the LPGA brass, the golfers, the Mission Hills Country Club, and the city of Palm Springs.
"Dinah Style"-a look at the changing couture, including how to get your polo shirt collar to stand up.
"The Dinah Guide," including how to get to Palm Springs and its vicinity, how to secure lodging and tickets, directions for getting around, and a tourist guide to the area.

What is so immediately stunning about this visual biography of one of golf's great physical masterpieces is the photography itself: it's all archival, and it's all black and white. It lends Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club a deeply personal feeling. It seems to carry with it a sense of past, permanence, and inherent artistry, as if it were a valued family heirloom. In a sense, this volume is the family album of a cherished golf course, the photographic and historical record of the people who brought the course to life--including MacKenzie, the titular designer who would later coax Augusta National from the landscape, and Marion Hollins, one of the most formidable women ever to master a mashie--and how they collaborated to accomplish their ideal.

Though overshadowed by Pebble Beach, its more famous Monterey Peninsula neighbor, Cypress Point remains one of the true crown jewels in American golf. Its pedigree is second to none, and its 16th hole--a long par 3 over the ocean--is generally acclaimed as the premier one-shotter in existence. Shackelford, a prolific historian of golf course architecture and designers, spends the first third of the volume affectionately introducing us to Cypress Point's founders, its planners, the ideas that went into creating the club, and the work that went into building the course. Then he takes us through Cypress Point hole by hole, with his own informative text augmented by theoretical and site-specific insights from MacKenzie and his assistant, Robert Hunter, all gift-wrapped with stunningly dramatic photos from the 1920s and '30s.

Alister MacKenzie's Cypress Point Club is a truly lovely volume, historically fascinating and visually pleasing. To the golf-obsessed among us, the surprising story behind the birth of No. 16 should alone be worth the greens fees. But like No. 16 itself, the story is just part of an overall whole, and there's much in Cypress Point to beguile anyone who can appreciate the splendid connection between an ancient game and an environment that gorgeously elevates it. --Jeff Silverman

An excellent read, great historical pictures, this documentary of the building of Cypress Point takes one back to another era of golf deveolpment. If you are a historian of the golf course, this piece of history is a must, Geoff has done a great job of putting it together. The book is timeless.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional Historic Document.......2000-12-22

If you have any interest in Alister MacKenzie's genius, or the great golf architecture of the 1920s, you must have this book. Called by many the Sistine Chapel of Golf, Cypress Point is one of the most exceptional courses on the planet. This book is an exceptional document of how it began. Magnificent full page b&ws show every hole of the early Cypress Point Club, while the text, much from the contemporaneous hand of Robert Hunter (MacKenzie's partner), tells how the course design and construction came together. Shackleford has done a wonderful service for golf historians everywhere by compiling this masterpiece.

This is by far the best information book about EVERY golf course here in California. Not only does it provide all the information someone needs to know about a course but it also contains honest evaluations about them. It was put together by golfers for golfers and the evaluations are not only informative but humoruous as well. It is well organized and it is great for those golfers that want to venture outside the area they live in. What seperates this from other guides is the quality paper that it's printed on and is small enough to fit in most glove boxes.or seat pockets of your vehicle. Don't leave home without it!!!

Not a heavy or intense story - the book made for great reading over the Labor Day Holiday. If you've been to this part of the California coast so much the better! I enjoyed the book even though I don't play golf. It would make a nice reasonably priced book to give somebody who does play golf!

5 out of 5 stars A great book for golf enthusiasts!.......1999-09-02

Lee Tyler's book took me back to the many times I have played golf in the Monterey area. The story was exciting and I could not put it down. She really knows golf and is an excellent mystery writer. I read her first book and am looking forward to the next as they get better and better. It is clear to me that she did her research and knows the Monterey and Carmel areas very well. It will also be interesting to see where she takes her readers in her next novel.

4 out of 5 stars A great mystery and educational.......1999-08-31

What's more fun than reading a good mystery book, especially one where you learn something about a beautiful area and a sport much loved by many.

I found the "Case of the Missing Links" by Lee Tyler to be such a book. Have been recommending it to my friends and feel strongly that they will enjoy it as much as I did. The book keeps you guessing all the way through and even makes you want to learn to play golf if you are not already a golfer.

            4 out of 5 stars Fun for a golfer's rainy day.......1999-08-28

The detailed trashing from Orange County seems to have been written by a Shakespearean scholar whose hobby is studying law. Definitely not a golfer. Hard to understand why the reviewer read all the way through. For you golfers who would like a free trip to the beautiful Pebble Beach golf links without paying the greens fees, and would like to settle down for a bit of light summer reading instead of moping about your score and the number of balls you lost, give it a try. I almost got it right, but it didn't bother me to have been fooled once again, and it was kind of fun to be in the virtual company of a pretty, aggressive girl. Doesn't happen much any more. 5 out of 5 stars Terrific Book On Monterey Courses.......2003-03-05

If you have ever been to the Monterey Peninsula and played just even one or two of the famous courses there, this book will be that stimulus to allow you to relive those rounds or to think ahead to new ones on those most famous (and exclusive) courses.
Nearly every hole at Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill and Cypress Point are pictured and a good amount of the holes at Poppy Hills, Monterey Pennisula CC, Spanish Bay and Pacific Grove are included as well. You can practically feel the damp and crisp morning air or hear the seals barking offshore through the pine forests as you flip through the pages of this book. If ever there was a great bedtime book for golfers who want to have pleasant dreams about one of the world's best (if not the best) golfing venues, this would be that book.

Pretty much the same format as earlier editions, but different editor with mistakes and omissions...pretty lame update. Lots of information, but too bulky to be convenient, and don't trust all the driving directions. Take a pass on this one.

I bought the book like I've done five times before and it's missing stuff. Like the bullets that tell you if the course has a driving range, rentals, accomodations. etc. It also has a different way of mapping the courses which makes it a little easier to locate a course but since the maps are divided up on seperate pages you can't tell where it's at in relation to something you might recognize.
Buy an earlier version if you can find it because this one has nothing over the older ones.

It seems only par for the course that Bing Crosby, who spent more of his celebrated life on the golf course than in the recording studio or the soundstage, would die on the golf course, too, thus setting a standard for the golfing jones that a significant pocket of Hollywood seems eager to match. Golf is as much a filmland obsession as limousines, hair, and make-up. Bob Hope and Humphrey Bogart were hearty hackers; so was Katharine Hepburn, Dean Martin, Oliver Hardy, Johnny Weismuller, Dinah Shore, and Rita Hayworth; and the tradition continues with Bill Murray, Clint Eastwood, Richard Dreyfuss, Jack Nicholson, and finally, Jack Wagner, who is still the best Hollywood hacker of them all. Their adventures on the links, superbly illustrated with archival photos, are as breezy as a morning walk down the fairways of Riviera, one of Hollywood's favorite golfing outposts. Golf in Hollywood may be starry-eyed, but it's not just star-struck; it takes interesting swings at the way the game's been treated on film, and also offers a series of colorful and historical profiles of the courses and country clubs favored by the film and TV community, past and present. Most fun of all, Golf in Hollywood not only names names, it dares to reveal handicaps. --Jeff Silverman

            Book Description

Golf in Hollywood, an in-depth look at golf in filmland, is illustrated with 100 photographs of the cinema's biggest stars playing America's favorite game. From the archives of Hollywood's most exclusive country clubs, rare pictures and stories detail great moments on renowned courses: when Howard Hughs landed his plane on the links at Bel Air Country Club so he wouldn't miss a date with Kate Hepburn, Bing Crosby's hole in one, O.J. barred from the Riviera. Written by golfing aficionado and champion Robert Z. Chew and television/film writer David Pavoni, Golf in Hollywood is a tribute to the game and the stars who play it--a holiday must for every golfer on the list, as well as for anyone who loves to see legendary stars in another role.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than the picture book I expected........1998-11-26

Terrific. A sleeper. Full of intriguing Hollywood golf lore and L.A. land history. Captivating photos, but what kept me up late was the text that brings the pictures alive. I found this a surprisingly substantive, well researched piece of work: a topical history of L.A. from an oblique angle--the conception, building and peopling of the city's great golf courses and golf clubs. On top of that it's an eyeball on the entertainment world through the leveling prism of golf: Stars, producers, directors striving to shine or at least //look// good at the maddening game. Easy, amusing writing. Who is the scratch-handicap actor who plays with his shoelaces untied so as not to overswing?

5 out of 5 stars Not Just For Golfers.......1998-11-22

I thoroughly enjoyed the great photos, and the interesting stories in this book. It's rare to find a golf book this entertaining, and well-researched.

5 out of 5 stars An entertaining and historical golf book.......1998-11-10

I loved the photos, and thoroughly enjoyed the stories of Hollywood's elite. For golfers like me who play the local municipal course, I wish I could tee it up on these great courses, and swing away with the stars!

5 out of 5 stars Finally, an On-line Column for KEEPS!!!.......2001-03-27

The only thing to beat Cheryl Bostrom's web-site column is her new book, The View from Goose Ridge. Finally, an on-line column that's for keeps!

The View from Goose Ridge is something of a field-guide to life's experiences. In this collection of 54 short devotional tales, Bostrom draws wisdom and meaning out of the chaotic landscape of family relationships, the passing world and random spirituality. The book cuts a clear path so we can see things like "Solutions", "Brain Clutter", "Squall Lines" and "Messes" --all presented with a refreshing sense of humor and vulnerability.

This book is filled with wonder, vision and gifts that can only be exchanged between generations. Whether musing about blackberry picking, storm watching, wild orchid hunting with her grandmother or manure spreading, Bostrom sees each event with unusual precision and perception. These are, perhaps, her strongest gifts -- an eye for the intricate detail of the created world (one that exists just beyond our windowsills) -- and an eye for the hand of God in those details. Even though I've lived near, or in, Washington state most of my life, The View from Goose Ridge broke open a sense of wonder about my surroundings that was quite unexpected.

The View from Goose Ridge is the kind of book that I will reach for again and again to guide my vision as a mother, daughter, wife, friend and caretaker of God's creation. Bostrom packs all the strength of a Northeasterly wind into her gentlest observations. There's something both life giving and life changing in that combination. A worthwhile read.

                  Book Description

The View From My Ridge is a collection of finely crafted collection of essays, short stories, and vignettes by Charles E. Rice, an Episcopal priest and author whose writing captures the spirit and personality of the mid-twentieth century American South.

Born in the John Ross House in Rossville, Georgia, Charles E. Rice lived most of his boyhood at the foot of Missionary Ridge on the Tennessee-Georgia state line. Steeped in Cherokee culture and Civil War history, this area becomes a central metaphor in Rice's much-travelled life, a life touched by the Great Depression, tempered by World War II, and challenged by the revolutions that shaped postwar America. Through it all, Rice struggles to find an enduring truth greater than the shifting values of the society he so ably served.

The View From My Ridge by: Charles E. Rice once again brings me back to my childhood roots, and beyond. I am transported back to the childhood roots of Charles E. Rice growing up in Rossville, GA. Charles E. Rice was a small part of my childhood past as the priest at St. Phillips Episcopal Church in Donelson, TN.
I had a pretty good day yesterday but the possibilty of creating memories as vivid as the memories I formed as a child diminishes everyday. Sharing Father Rice's memories of dogs, grandmothers, railroad tracks and photography is so relevant. I never thought I would be able to relate to Father Rice when he was a dreaded grown up and I was just a kid. Who knew?
His path from young scalawag to priest, father and husband was well documented in tiny, bite size vignettes, typically of one handwritten page or less. Short statements, long in verse. Brevity rocks!
There are three flyleaves at the end of this book and I don't know why that so intrigues me.
I highly recommend this book and I hope you have as much fun reading it as I did.

                        3 out of 5 stars A worthwhile read.......2001-07-20

I started reading this slim volume quite a few months ago and I put it down, never intending to finish it. Some of the early parts of the book rubbed me the wrong way, to the point where I wondered just how much of a true Christian Mr. West really was. Recently, I picked it up and basically started where I left off, and my previous judgementalism gave way to a certain admiration. Morris West has not only the wisdom of a man of advanced years but the worldly experience that gives him a valuable perspective to share on such issues as evil, violence, dissent, and death. He has seen things most of us with never see, and this book is all the more enlightening because of that fact. Although not a Catholic like Mr. West is, I share his experience of a life that is centered around the institution of the church, and can appreciate the love/hate relationship one can have with the Body of Christ. Like many, he cries out for a church that values the person above laws and regulations. I look forward in the future to reading some of his fiction (although much of it is out of print and rather hard to get at this time).

                        5 out of 5 stars Thank You!.......2000-07-29

I've long admired West's ability to move me with words. His papal trilogy in particular ranks as one of my favorite in literary fiction. To read this delightfully honest and heartfelt memoir is to gain even greater insight to the wisdom and insights of his fictional work.

West, long a respectful rebel of sorts, has managed to approach subjects and questions many wish to avoid. In doing so, rather than turning these into platforms for personal grievances, he elevates their importance in community discussion.

Despite his literary prowess, West manages to come across as an everyday man, a man you'd like to converse with over coffee. No, don't remind me that the most likely place for conversation would be at his deathbed. He may be getting older, nearer to unknown that he says he welcomes willingly, but his words will remain as a part of our culture. His thoughts and ideas will remain to challenge future generations.

Mr Morris West, thank you for that gift.

5 out of 5 stars Westýs revealing memoir and inspiring spiritual testament.......1998-04-15

With sales of his books having exceeded sixty million copies, Morris West is not only Australia's best-selling writer, but also one of our best-known storytellers. With his so-called `Vatican Trilogy' - `The Shoes of the Fisherman', `The Clowns of God' and `Lazarus' - he virtually invented a genre, the papal novel.

In the past, West has resisted calls for an autobiography, holding that the `chronicles of my works and days have already been presented under the decent draperies of fiction'. However, having turned eighty, West has put aside fiction to give an account of his twentieth-century pilgrimage.

The book is not an autobiography as such, but rather part memoir, part philosophical meditation, part spiritual testament. We learn of his early family life before becoming a trainee with the Christian Brothers, of the trials of religious life, and of life as a writer on the international stage. West reflects on the nature of evil, on violence, and on the roles of dissent and prophecy in the Church. He also writes movingly of his encounters with Brother Death.

West has, over the years, defiantly retained his rightful place as a son of the Church, and in doing so has encouraged countless others troubled by rigid orthodoxies. Changes in the Church in recent decades, and in West's own life and attitudes, are well captured by two pieces of his journalism that are reproduced in full in the book, both about recent popes. The first is a glowing obituary of John XXIII, `The Good Pastor', written in 1963. The second is a very critical reflection on the current pontiff, written on the occasion of the papal visit to Australia for the nation's first beatification (of Mary MacKillop).

Late in his life, West has given us an uplifting account of his experience of being a Christian in these troubled times. It is written with grace, intelligence and wisdom. [A Selection of the John Garratt Catholic Book Club.]

                        5 out of 5 stars A remarkable, honest and thought-provoking testimony.......1997-02-07

Morris West has written a truly challenging testimony as he nears the end of a fine career and eventful life. For me, he summed up how I feel as a Catholic facing the challenges of the Church at the end of the millenium. His candidness and honesty are refreshing. His ideas worth consideration. And his words often inspiring. I am grateful he took the time to tell me so intimately about his own faith journey
