Customer Reviews:
Avoid this product.......2006-10-17
I would concur with the other reviewers - this phrase book and CD set is quite useless. The audio CD only has a tiny, tiny fraction of words/phrases listed in the book - maybe 200 or so. The rest you will need to figure out for yourself, that is if you can decipher the pronunciation. Astoundingly, the book goes with a Western-style pronunciation guide with no mention of rising/falling tones. For example, it lists:
like ut in cut
like ee in bee
with no other indication of tone! I do speak a bit of Cantonese, and I know how important tones are for this language. So if you use this "guide" you would probably end up saying something that insults a person's mother or worse.
Terrible...do NOT buy this!!!.......2004-06-06
I received the Berlitz Cantonese Chinese Travel Pack as a gift from my parents. This phrase book and CD set is completely useless. It is extremely difficult to follow - the audio CD does not follow the lessons in the book (jumps from one phrase to another in no apparent order) and often times the written text is completely different than what is spoken on the CD. The sequence of the lessons do not make sense either - the introductory part (e.g. greetings, "my name is...") are in the BACK of the book, instead of the front. There are a lot of other mistakes in the book, but these are just the worst...
Not up to usual Berlitz quality........1999-10-11
Usually a great enthusiast about the Berlitz products, I can't say enough about how poor this offering is. An obvious departure from their other works, this one doesn't.
Disappointing.......1999-09-15
I can't add much to Mr. Ulrich's very on-target remarks besides my agreement. He has already mentioned the two most irksome things about the book, namely the lack of tone indicators, and the lack of correspondance between the Cantonese and the Mandarin text. Let me clarify this for those who haven't looked at the book. Each sentence is presented in both romanization and in Chinese characters. The trouble is that while the romanization is faithful to the language spoken on the tape, the Chinese characters seem to have been borrowed wholesale from (I'm guessing) the Mandarin version of their phrasebook, leaving only the loosest of semantic ties between the two. There is thus no question of using the characters to find out exactly what you are saying. It's as if the authors were actively hostile to the ambitious student.
Simply not up to par with past Berlitz publications........1998-12-12
I was extremely dissappointed in Berlitz's new series of phrasebooks. I have been collecting Berlitz phrasebooks for years in every language available, and have always found Berlitz products to be of great quality. Yet the recent changes, such as the elimination of tonal indications and textual discrepancies in the Mandarin and Cantonese series, have resulted in a poor product that will definitely weaken my loyalty. I give them credit for attempting to create a more visually appealing phrasebook. I do not, however, think that this should compromise the overall quality of the series. The use of tonal markings and the inclusion of an audio script for the cassette would greatly enhance the utility of this product. The cassette should also repeat the phrases in Cantonese so that the listener can strengthen oral and aural skills. These faults make it almost impossible to become proficient in the language as past editions have. I sincerely hope that Berlitz attempts to remedy the current situation, because there are a great deal of new phrasebooks on the market that offer both appealing and practical approaches to learning the language.

A shoestring traveler's review.......2007-06-20
The selection of a guidebook these days results in mixed feelings at best and often outright disappointment. Since the publishers which historically targeted backpackers are now neglecting that demographic, I wanted to explore other options. In addition to the The Rough Guide to Hong Kong & Macau I got the slightly smaller Berlitz guide (tenth edition 2003, updated 2006). Well, the guide will work for some tourists, but it's not ideal.
If you're like me, you stay for free with local hosts from Internet hospitality associations instead of in impersonal hotels or hostels. You also eat in whatever little hole in the wall seems an authenthic local dining experience instead of some totally charmless restaurant. So, the first thing to do with the Berlitz guide is cut out the several pages of lodging and restaurant listings at the back, handily recognizable since they are printed on yellow paper. These are for people willing to pay several hundred euro a night for a hotel room, which few independent tourists would suffer. The restaurant recommendations are also only for houte coutre dining experiences.
So, if you're the sort of traveler who is not going to use the restaurant and hotel listings, there's still the tourist direction itself. The guide covers the sort of things that you'll want to see in the centre of Hong Kong, from British remnants to the Cantonese neighbourhoods. Maps of Central and Kowloon are provided, though they aren't especially readable. However, the Berlitz guide neglects a huge amount of the places a tourist could see in this exciting area. Only Central and Kowloon get much attention. The other parts of Hong Kong Island get scanty coverage, the New Territories are hardly mentioned, and the advertised "Excursion" chapters to Guangzhou and Shenzhen turn out to be single pages each with no practical information, just a recommendation to visit. Macau gets some attention, perhaps enough that a tourist could go there using only the book, but all in all it's not much.
The guide has other problems as well, from a peculiar transliteration of Cantonese phrases that totally neglects tones, to irritatingly unauthentic and uninspiring photographs. And unlike many other guidebooks, which give a balanced view of the history and current events of a region, the Berlitz guide paints only a rosy view of Hong Kong and mentions none of its considerably current challenges.
Bottom line, the Berlitz guide can't compete with the Rough Guide or Lonely Planet in exhaustively showcasing the true wealth of tourism opportunities available here. I'd recommend it only for wealthy travelers who are going to spend a couple of days only, and will visit only Central (and perhaps Aberdeen) and Kowloon. The Rough Guide inspired me to spend several weeks here, keen to see all kinds of things, while the Berlitz guide makes the place sound like a kitsch destination useful only for a bit of shopping and exotic food.

A shoestring traveler's review.......2007-06-11
The selection of a guidebook these days results in mixed feelings at best and often outright disappointment. Since Lonely Planet has left behind its traditional backpacker demographic, I thought any other guidebook would work just as well, so I passed over its Lonely Planet Best of Shanghai and got the slightly smaller Berlitz guide. Well, the guide works, but it's infuriating.
The guide dissuades the traveler from eating at streetside venues, claiming it requires some special knowledge of Chinese, an outright lie in a country where one can point at everything.
So, if you're the sort of traveler who is not going to use the restaurant and hotel listings, there's still the tourist direction itself. The guide does indeed cover the sort of things that you'll want to see in central Shanghai, from colonial remnants to the weird contemporary architecture of the new Pudong district. The maps work, I got around with them just fine without having to buy any other one. However, what is infuriating about the guide is its total lack of social commentary. Author J.D. Brown cheers on the spread of American chain restaurants and cafes in Shanghai, never questioning whether the decline of locally-owned establishments is a good thing. Brown is also totally uncritical of the Chinese government. At the same time that Shanghai is thriving, China faces many institutional challenges and corruption, but Brown makes it seem as if only the colonial period had downsides, while today's Shanghai is flawless.
Bottom line, the Berlitz guide can compete with the Lonely Planet, since the latter publisher is increasingly resembling the former. However, you'll be irked, and you'll need to supplement some of the guide's advice with Internet resources. Would that the good guidebooks of yore return.

Customer Reviews:
An incredible mistake.......2007-06-22
This phrase book will not work in China. The phonetic spellngs are given without tones. That is more or less like leaving out the vowels when you tell someone how to pronounce words in English.
The book actually tells you that "in reality" Mandarin is spoken with tones (p. 7). But it says the tones are hard and so they are left out here. The tones are also necessary. So this book teaches a new made-up version of Mandarin that will not work "in reality."
poorly put together.......2006-02-07
While this book and CD offer a basic introduction to Mandarin, the Berlitz people have thoughtlessly broken up this hour-long CD over only eight tracks. This is terribly inconvenient if you want to work on a small section at a time. Also, the first section includes all the introductory material--the jaunty song, etc.--so you have to listen to one and a half minutes of junk before the actual lessons begin. If they had put this material on a track by itself, the user could skip it on repeated listens. Surely the Berlitz people know how language learners are likely to use their audio materials. Why then did they not take the simple step of breaking this material into more easily accessible pieces? This is a thoughtlessly put together product and poor language learning pedagogy to boot.
mandarin trvel pk.......2003-12-13
Compared to berlitz edition in cassette tape years ago, this CD edition does not have many things to praise:
While the whole world use PINYN to help foreigners pronounce Chinese words and phrases, Berlitz keeps on using strange notations, perhaps to facilitate the reading of Cantonese, but not mandarin.
The previous cassette edition showed the pronunciation and intonation more Beijing-like.
In the previous cassette edition, there were more/longer pause, so the student could repeat the chinese phrase at ease.
Great as an accompaniment.......2003-03-11
As a total beginner to Mandarin, this is a wonderful accompaniment to other reference and learning materials. I don't think this does an effective job of teaching the language by itself but the small book with the audio cassette are very thoughtfully put together.
Nice.......2003-01-23
A nice little book to carry around with you while you are traveling. I do not recommend buying the book by itself. You will need some tapes in order to learn the tones because the book does not mark words with tones which will make a lot of what you try to say not understandable! But it is nice to carry around and point to things if you cannot say them.

Book Description
"I have a great life, if only I could stop eating." Those were the words Nancy Goodman used to describe herself. Like millions of women of all ages, she had an obsession with food. She was obsessed with her weight, obsessed with eating, and obsessed with not eating. It didn't matter that she "looked OK" or "good enough" to most people. She was trapped in a life of dieting and deprivation rather than leading a life true to who she wanted to be.
In It Was Food Vs. Me . . . and I Won, Nancy speaks directly to readers and shares her inspiring story and lessons for breaking free. As Nancy discovered, when she finally began to confront the true issues facing her, instead of the self-created ones about food, she was able to lose weight, start eating the foods she loved, stop obsessing, and flourish in more ways than she had ever imagined. With total honesty and a passion for helping others, she offers refreshing advice on dealing with everything from daily food choices, cravings, and emotional triggers to the realities of binges and setbacks, setting nonweight goals, and living one's dreams. As Nancy says, "Willpower is not about sticking to diets, it's about sticking to the truth . . . when you begin to live close to the person who lives inside you, food loses its control over you."
The real triumph of It Was Food Vs. Me . . . and I Won is Nancy's funny, intimate, charismatic voice, which comes through on every page of this powerful and timely book. Her enthusiasm, directness, and warmth will inspire and motivate anyone who wants to live a healthier, more rewarding life.
Be inspired and learn how to:
* Keep SAFE -- Separate Always Food and Emotion and understand what triggers your overeating
* Feed your cravings and accept your bingesóto take the fear out of food
* Structure your eating -- instead of dieting, to help you lose weight and enjoy the foods you love
* Exercise to feel strong and alive -- not just to burn calories
* Redirect your energy from food and weight to your life -- and discover who you really are
Customer Reviews:
Tiresome, distracting rambling..........2007-08-05
I borrowed this book from the local library in hopes of finding something new. This book is different, but the message is not - "it is not about the food but the feelings".
Nancy takes many, many pages to get this simple message across. The writing is disjointed and there is little or no connection between one chapter and the next. It is much like reading someone's journal or diary entries. Chapters are numerous and short (like a journal). One chapter is entirely devoted to writing about losing chapter 29 on the computer. I kid you not. This is tiresome and distracting from the supposed purpose of the book. It is as though we are all expected to be hanging on her every word and life experience. Sorry - just not that interesting and certainly not helpful.
As others have stated, the nutritional advice is questionable. Nancy says she wants you to be healthy, but indicates she keeps Ho-ho snack cakes in her freezer and chips/Doritos in her cupboards for when she needs unhealthy foods. She even goes as far as to say that eating salads will not help you to lose weight.
I could hardly force myself to finish the book. I kept thinking I would get to the part where I, too, would feel this was a great book. It never happened.
It Was Food vs. Me... and I Won........2006-07-31
I loved it. I liked the friendship she tries to develop with you as the book progresses.
Very helpful
Wow!.......2006-02-23
This is the only book I have ever read where I felt like the author knew exactly how I was feeling. I have never been able to describe my relationship with food until now. Now that I have a better understanding, I can be in control. This is an excellent book.
Probably not the Solution that you are looking for.......2005-09-21
To prevent repetition, please read Carla Baku's review because I believe that the review highlighted some very important aspects of the book that the reader should acknowledge. If you are looking for a book that you can relate to because you have similar experiences with food and emotions as Nancy had, you've found it. I am still amazed at her ability to share and then publish some of her experiences. I have gone through very similar experiences and I can barely write about any of it on paper, let alone share with anyone else. If you are a person who is looking for a solution or an answer to what might be your problem with food... this is the wrong book. It is a comforting book though if you are someone with similar issues like Nancy because it makes you realize that you are definatly not alone. Nancy talks how she goes to see a therapist or a counselor and at first it was really difficult, difficult to admit her problems and difficult for her to face someone and to ask for help. Nancy realizes that her family and her marriage interplay with her issues with food. What I realized at this point was the power of asking for help. Not the kind of help from the late night infomercials selling equiptment that already filled my basement, not the kind of help from the latest diet books or solutions, but the kind of professional help like Nancy sought out and helped her to overcome her issues with food. Like I did and before I knew it, my issues weren't around food at all, food was just the distraction and for me is no longer a problem anymore. I think an important part of the book is the challenge and the power of asking for help. After 2 years with an eating disorder, I asked for help and found a therapist. Its the best thing I've very done for myself.
One woman's war with food........2005-08-09
Nancy Goodman struggled for many years with weight issues. Though she was never that overweight, her obsessions with food were making her life miserable. And she kept her weight down by overexercising, undereating etc.
In this book Goodman shares her thoughts on what works for her. She "talks" to the reader and shares ideas on what to do so the reader can also hopefully conquer their food problems.
Goodman's book is an interesting read. Though I feel she still has issues with food and likely always will, it appears that she has won the major battles and can work through her feelings.
Some of her ideas are totally different. Don't eat salads as a weight loss food (unless you want one) because they won't fill you up and by the time you add on all the dressing you may as well have eaten a satisfying sandwich. Consider eating calcium chews as a dessert. One or two will give you that chocolate or caramel munch and serve as an end to the meal. Use your calories on things you want. If you really want that hunk o'cake eat that instead of dinner. Think about what you are willing to give up so you can eat other things. (In Nancy's case she doesn't eat olive oil or butter).
Nancy is really open in the book with her thoughts and feelings. I did feel sorry for her hubby though whom she blasts throughout the book. Also she has the benefit of having spent a number of years working with a food therapist.
Overall, it's an interesting read about one woman's struggle to make peace with food and her approach is different than the typical diet advise.
