Excellent Introduction for new wildflower enthusiasts.......1998-04-12
This small book provides attractive color pictures of every wildflower that it covers. The first time or sometime enthusiast will enjoy this book much more than the more broadly focused Jaeger and Munz classics that have fewer color plates and devote most of their coverage to the Mohave Desert. 1998 has been an extraordinary spring wildflower year. I have attempted to use all three books and found that my success with this one was such that I was able to find and identify about 3/4 of the flowers in the book just from my trips to Borrego Springs, Mecca Road (Box Canyon), Joshua Tree and the Colorado River.

One of America's greatest presidents remembered.......2007-05-13
This is one of the many books and magazines published at the time of Ronald Reagan's death in 2004 in an attempt to capitalize on the moment. It is, as the name implies, a remembrance of Reagan -- not a celebration of his life and achievements as president. What makes the book unique, perhaps, is that it comes from CBS News which, in my view, was an organization generally unfriendly to the President and his policies.
What did I like best about the book? The opportunity to re-read many of Reagan's more important speeches and recapture, for a moment, the conservatism of his time (I have yet to play the DVD). What did I like the least? The book takes a more or less even handed approach to its subject, but fails to give Reagan much of the credit he deserves. Three stars for the treatment of the subject and five stars for the speeches and the DVD equals four stars.

Product Description
From his threadbare early days in tampico, Il to his marathon career as an actor in Hollywood, to his eventual rise to the seat of ultimate power in Washington; Ronald Wilson reagan, our witty, grandfatherly Commander In Chief is revealeed in this touching remembrahce of one of our greatest American presidents. in these troubled times his easy charm and no nonsense politics are a safe harbor for all those who admire this strong, resourceful and sincere leader.
Product Description
Shortly before the was elected the fortieth president of the United Sates, Ronald Reagan was asked what the American people saw in him. With characteristic modesty he replied, "I think, maybe, they see themselves and that I'm one of them." Ronald Reagan is the story of this man who embodied the American century, from his modest Midwestern beginnings through his successful Hollywood career to his two-term tenure in the White House. Illustrated with more than 130 full-color and black-and-white photographs, this engaging pictorial biography celebrates the life, achievements, and legacy of an American icon.
In deftly interwoven words and images we look back at the real Reagan, who emerged from his humble Illinois roots to become a movie and television star. In 1966 Reagan left Hollywood behind and entered the political arena, eventually becoming governor of California. There was no stopping this engaging and eloquent citizen-politician from carrying his message of hope and promise all the way to Washington, D.C.
President of the United States from 1981 to 1989a decade of peace, prosperity, and growth for AmericaReagan presided over the end of the Cold War. For all his optimism, geniality, and folksy rhetoric, Reagan was never afraid to stand up for his principles in both domestic and foreign affairs. And though he held some views that were considered, at times, controversial, his candor and compassion won him the respect and admiration of Americans and world leaders alike. For many, Reagan was the perfect representative for traditional American values.
Throughout his long life of public service, Ronald Reagan dared his fellow Americans to dream heroic dreams. This volume is a lasting tribute to a man whose character and integrity made those dreams come true.

What would Spartacus do?.......2006-05-23
I read this book to pieces -- literally -- when I was in my early teens, and just seeing the paperback cover reproduced here on Amazon ("Russia gave him everything a man could want -- except freedom" -- printed on the back) brings me way, way, waaaaay back, to an old story that never gets old.
Viktor Belenko was a Soviet fighter pilot who defected to Japan in the 1970s -- in his top-secret Mig 25 "Foxbat", at the time the world's fastest and most feared interceptor. On the surface he seemed an extremely unlikely candidate to jump the fence of the worker's paradise: the son of a decorated partisan fighter of the Second World War, he had overcome his poverty-stricken family's lack of political connections with a Samurai-like work-ethic and, against all odds, become a pilot of the most coveted and jealously-guarded aircraft in the USSR. He made good money, had the best priveleges, and could have looked forward to a cushy retirement when he was only 40 years old. His defection was as much a question of "Why?" as a question of "How?"
Author John Barron writes a compact, highly readable account of Belenko's life and the long series of incidents which turned him from an idealistic young communist, who sheds tears over the death of Stalin, to a man so filled with hatred for the regime he seeks not merely to escape it but to hurt it in the most grievous possible way -- by handing its most precious secrets to the enemy.
"Mig Pilot" is one of those stories that can be enjoyed on several levels. Read through quickly, it is a first-class adventure, a "will he or won't he get away with this" thriller. Read more slowly and thoughtfully, it is a terse, often humorous, yet ultimately horrifyingly revealing tale of what life was like under the communist system -- a system so corrupt, incompetently managed and morally bankrupt it drove some to suicide, most to intellectual surrender, and a tiny few to risk their lives just to get the hell away from it.
Barron litters the book with anecdotes about the grotesquerie that was the Soviet Union: about buildings so shoddily constructed they crack apart with their inhabitants still in them; officials so corrupt they refuse to perform their jobs unless paid substantial bribes; crime so rampant that people are stabbed to death for the clothes on their backs; enlisted men treated so badly they riot, desert and murder; and a system of informers so all-pervading that only the most dishonest man could ever rise to the top. Everywhere you look is filth, corruption, lying, hypocrisy, and cant, all set to the tune of patriotic music and propaganda slogans that bear about as much resemblance to reality as a Tom & Jerry cartoon. It's Orwell's "1984", with worse technology.
Ultimately, though, the book is not about oppression but rather freedom -- the indestructable, indefatigable desire for human beings to breathe and think and speak their minds, without wondering if the secret police will take them away to a death camp or a mental institution for their troubles. Belenko, for all his perks and petty priveleges, found himself unable to play the role of [...]to the communist party's pimp. He risked everything on the gamble that, somewhere over the horizon, there was a better way. If Barron, who is admittedly jingoistic American patriot of the cardboard sort, made the better way look a bit too close to perfect....well, to Belenko's eyes, maybe close to perfect was perfect enough. To paraphrase Howard Fast, whose (ironically) pro-communist novel "Spartacus" served as Belenko's lifelong inspiration:
"As long as men suffered, and other men profited from those who suffered, the name of Viktor Belenko would be remembered, whispered sometimes and shouted loud and clear at others."[...]
Going along with the crowd.......2006-01-24
I note that the other reviews of this book have been either four or five stars and I am not about to buck the trend.
John Barron has crafted an interesting albeit short work on an event that sailed right by me in the 70s. His description of Lieutenant Belenko's life in the USSR is as riveting as his description of the actual defection flight itself. Mr. Barron has forced me to look elsewhere for more material on Viktor Belenko and, in so doing, I have found him to be a genuinely likeable man, a hero (to the West, at least), and someone I admire a great deal..
..Viktor Belenko, by the way, says nothing to discredit Mr. Barron's worthy effort. It's an old book, but a worthwhile glimpse into the politics of the old Soviet Union and the cold war.
I read this book YEARS ago...........2005-02-01
And was just telling someone about it! I decided to look it up to see if was still available.
If you get a chance.. read this book.
Great view inside the Soviet Union.......2002-10-06
I read this book twice while the Soviet Union still stood. The book is brilliently written. You get a view of life inside the former Soviet Union, inside their millitary and civillian life, and you see through the eyes of a refugee when he first experiences America. The story helps you to appreciate what you have here. Lt. Belenko is a very courageous man.
A Good Look at the Soviet Union.......2002-01-04
This book paints an insightful picture of Soviet life and politics during the Cold War, and Belenko's story within that Soviet context is very interesting. The book is great.
Customer Reviews:
George Orwell was a prophet.......2007-07-02
This book is just like reading "1984" or "Animal Farm." It was an emotional experience to read Belenko's story. I think that it should be required reading (required??. . . Mr. Komrad) for all High School kids. It gives you a greater appreciation for what we have . . . as flawed as it is. Belenko is a hero. I felt that the book was well-written, and conveyed Belenko's sense of frustration, very well.
There is no substitute for man's desire for freedom.......2006-05-01
It was incredible seeing Lt. Belenko's comparisons between the life in Soviet Russia and the USA. It made me laugh many times to see his disbelief at what we consider so normal in our way of life. If you know of anyone who takes our freedom's for granted, this would be an excellent book to read.
good book but to dumbed down.......2003-07-18
this was a good book i really enjoyed it but i felt it was to dumbed down i have read public school text books with more in depth study of the soviet system the book was a fun read but it was just the same stuff you always here about the soviet union with some stuff about planes thrown in but the plane stuff was cool, some of the soviet union stuff was to and belenko is very cool lol now i'm indepth
Good book, misleading title.......2001-08-03
The unfortunate thing about this book is that the title will probably attract the wrong audience, and scare away the right audience. This isnýt a book about fighter pilots, fighter piloting, or even flying. It is a book about a political and social system gone very wrong. It is a book about weighing oneýs loyalties against oneýs happiness and well being. It is a book about fearing inaction more than action. It is a book that made me say aloud to many people since I read it, "Iýll never again complain about life in the USA."
This true story is presented in a framed narrative, beginning with Victor's famous defection flight to Japan in a Soviet Mig-25, then flashing back to his life in the Soviet Union of the 1960s and 1970s, then finishing the suspenseful defection/landing sequence, then moving on to Belenko's bittersweet life in the USA.
Avoiding too much talk about fighter piloting, author John Barron wisely veers away from turning this account into a fighter-jock's debrief manual, and instead focuses on the factors that turned Belenko against his motherland. In doing this, he presents a very sobering portrait of life in the Soviet Union ý which stands in stark contrast to the life pilot Victor Belenko found in the USA afterwards.
I was impressed by Belenkoýs voluntary quest to explore the USA alone until he found proof that it couldnýt possibly be this good here. He never found proof. Even after having a cab driver in San Francisco drop him off in the worst part of town, Belenko found satisfaction in a $1.50 meal. It is tidbits like that which speak volumes about what kind of a life this man had in the Soviet Union, and why it led him to risk flying about 500 miles in a fighter jet with a 560 mile range (he started with 14 tons of fuel and landed with 52 gallons ý enough for about 30 seconds of powered flight).
If youýre a aviation and/or warbird enthusiast, youýll enjoy the "de-mythification" of the fabled and hugely over-rated Mig-25. Youýll delight in hearing Belenko talk about why the Mig-25 posed no threat to the USAýs awesome SR-71 supersonic recon jet. And youýll grin when he expressed disbelief that a 747 jumbo jet required only a 3 person crew, or amazement that a US Navy aircraft carrier could launch and land so many jets so flawlessly and fast.
But hopefully, youýll also want to re-read the parts where Barron describes Belenkoýs boyhood quest for more meat in his diet, or how when the CIA first took Belenko to an American suburban grocery store Belenko thought it was all a put-on for his benefit, finding it difficult to believe our country was this well supplied.
I keep the book in my aviation book collection, but it wouldnýt be out of place next to more socially conscious books. Indeed, Iým sometimes inclined to put it on the same shelf as my Farley Mowat books!
A great book about escaping to freedom.......2000-09-21
I couldn't have been more than 12 when I first read Mig Pilot. This is the original Hunt for Red October. But this one's real. Belenko goes into great detail about the Soviet system and how it continually failed him after promising the stars.
From the hard times he faced as a youth, to his rise into the ranks of a fighter pilot and ultimately to his defection with Russia's most prized fighter, Belenko douses the reader with his experience.
He depicts a Soviet Union that is riddled with poverty and run by a government that promises a turn around fueled by the wonders of the communist system. Belenko has the vision to see that nothing is changing and works his way into the ranks of the military in which he is told that pilots live like kings. His hard work does pay off when he finds the means to leave the country that has done him wrong.
He takes the pride of the Soviet Air Force, the Mig 25, and makes a break for the freedom and promise of the United States. Only a small portion of the book deals with the actual escape of Sgt. Belenko. The bulk of the book is the story behind the man and how life in his country compelled him to leave as well as the differences he experienced between the two dominant cold-war powers.
If Mig-Pilot can be found, it should be bought. It's a nice little piece of the past that caused quite a stir with the Russian military and shattered a lot of fears about the new Soviet "superfighter"
