Customer Reviews:
For the Faroes get LP's Scandinavian Europe book instead.......2007-08-23
The LP Iceland, Greenland and Faroes book reviewed here is now outdated. It has been superseded by specific books on Greenland and on Iceland while if you're looking for the latest practical info on the Faroe Islands you'll now need to buy the Scandinavian Europe book. Although that doesn't have a huge coverage of the islands, it should be fine for a one-week trip - indeed the Bradt Faroes book is by comparison almost over detailed with stuff that's of little real help while the Bradt town maps have some serious errors.
Indispensable.......2004-08-16
I don't think this book ever left my hand from the moment I stepped off the plane at Keflavik Airport until I loaded my bags into the Flybus for the return trip. This was the only book I was able to find specifically on Iceland, with enough information on Reykjavik and the surrounding towns to give me a little confidence while exploring this breathtaking land. The section on South Central Iceland is a must read for anyone planning to see the Golden Circle.
Nothing about the birds?.......2003-09-28
Iceland is famous for its millions of seabirds, especially puffins, that nest on the cliffs and shores. Unfortunately they all depart by September 1 (the puffins often in mid-August), and nowhere did I find that information, although I admit I didn't read the Lonely Planet guide from cover to cover. A group of us who visited in mid-September were very disappointed. In fairness, the other Iceland guides don't seem to warn of this either, nor do the travel brochures.
Be aware of the agenda.......2003-09-10
While this travel gudie does cover Iceland in detail, one needs to be careful to note that lonely planet does have their own agenda. Many of the hotels they reccommend over other establishments are not the best accomodations. Their may even be other hotels in the area where they say there are no other places to stay. And from a guide in the west fjords, some of their contact information as well as their descriptions may be far off.
Icelandic History.......2003-09-07
I have for sometime been an enthusiatic user of Lonely Planet guides for travels in Asia and in Europe. The guides I have used have been excellent sources, not only about the countries and their people but of the historical perspectives on how the country became what it is.
For this reason, I was disappointed with the contents of the Facts about Iceland section of the Lonely Planet Iceland Guide. Throughout the guide, there are political biased and incorrect statements about Iceland's recent history, especially regarding Iceland's relations with the United States.
Regarding the Post -Indepence section of the guide, American troops stayed on a Keflavik after the end of the war by treaty, mutually arrived at by the two governments. The American forces had come to Iceland by invitation of the Icelandic Government during WordWar II to preserve their security. Iceland has never had armed forces of her own.
Iceland willingly became a member of NATO to serve her own interests, especially regarding security during the Cold War.
There are other politically biased and incorrect statements in the guide regarding this time period. I e-mailed what I thought was a polite message to Lonely Planet advising them to have another look at their history sections, but I received no reply. I, and I suspect a lot of others, feel that a travel guide should not be a political forum.

Touching but Biased.......2004-05-27
A book based on a personal experience during a highly volatile and chaotic time. Though touching and quite graphic, there is a strong anti USA bias and a bitter unresolved sentimental undertow - for obvious reasons. Jumps to conclusions and undermines the heroic efforts of many people both in El Salvador & the US who effectively brought this conflict to a peaceful conclusion.
Great book.......2002-09-06
This book shows you how bad the government of El Salvador has been through the 80s and 90s. Also unmask the USA (Freedom figthers yeah right!) which supported this goverment even knowing the war crimes against inocent people.
Great Read!.......2000-05-25
If you like to read true stories that make you want cry, this book is for you. If you like to learn about history when the U.S. destroyed lives, this book is for you. If you like to read about good terrorists, this book is for you.

Book Description
A shocking, fascinating account of one of the greatest espionage scandals of our time. Ann Blackman and Elaine Shannon reveal the truth about Robert Hanssen and his 15 years of exceptionally destructive espionage. They brilliantly explore why Hanssen decided to betray his family, his church and his country, and how he got away with it.
Customer Reviews:
Terrible Traitor!.......2007-03-19
"The Spy Next Door" is an astonishing easy reading story about a common man with an uncommon ability to elude. Robert Hanssen's 25 year job at the FBI gave him access to carefully guarded national security secrets. Ann Blackman and Elaine Shannon are investigative reporters that give a biography of a man whose life is unbelievable, yet true and amazing.
The "Spy Next Door" page turner includes his life from ostracized child to super spy for the Soviets. The only son of a Chicago Cop, he never received his father's approval, was a high school misfit, who developed deep resentments. On the surface, Bob never made a big deal about anything, but he didn't like surprises and he didn't like being forgotten. He was smart and knew by developing a facade of normalcy - he played the boring man next door. Beneath his shell of normalcy he built his dual lives - "lawful" FBI agent and Soviet Spy; "faithful" husband and playboy; and "loyal Catholic" and aesthetic. He kept an arms length from reality so he could chase an exciting game of cat and mouse. He dropped clues - almost daring people to catch him or pay better attention.
What amazed me is that he could have gotten away with it. Why did he take the risk of reactivating? There was little chance of the FBI catching him as long as he stayed dormant. Hanssen's espionage has little to do with spying and much to do with emotional wants. He is an arrogant man harboring resentments and needed "respect" and friendships from an enemy that laughed at his naive requests for little money and yet giving them key intelligence - causing deaths of our agents - so they would pay attention and he could get retribution - telling everyone "I will show you!"
By blending in, being "common" - no one paid attention to him. The betrayal to this country is enormous.
Hey.......2006-07-24
I found this book very informative i was able to read it super fast a must read
A Great Story.......2003-02-04
This book was a good read. It seemed to be more thoroughly researched(although there are still open questions) and was not simply rushed out by two greedy authors capitalizing on recent events.
I understand that Bob and Bonnie Hansen's position was not represented in this book. I would've liked more concrete evidence rather than author speculation, but that is implausible in this case.
With the amount of research and time that was invested in this book, I am reasonably satisfied with the result and give this book 4 stars
Interesting, but thorough?.......2003-01-09
I have to rate this book at 3 stars. Why? At only 230+ pages, I have to wonder if the book wasn't a rush to judgement and was not as thoroughly researched as it could have been. Basically, the book is a good, quick read and gives the reader an overall view of Bob Hanssen and his exploits as a spy. However, there are a few things that make me believe the book could have been better.
First of all, there was a lengthy dissertation about Opus Dei. Shannon never really adequately explained how the Opus Dei may have contributed to Hanssen's behavior as a spy. Secondly, she mentioned his interest in internet pornography. Well...so how did that affect Hanssen's behavior? She doesn't explain that, so one wonders what was the point of mentioning his interest in pornography in the first place. Third, as another reader mentioned, there are no bibliographies nor an index, nor are there any photos. I have to question Shannon's notes if she doesn't reference them.
Nevertheless, the book is worth a read. I think the book would have benefitted from a better psychoanalysis of Hanssen. ...
Very Interesting.......2003-01-03
I was intrigued by the information in this book.I wanted more detail and a clearer understanding. I remember searching for this book and waiting for it to arrive. I was a little disappointed that it was not better, having seen several interviews with the authors.
I have found that "Spy" by David Wise is a more detailed and better written book. I believe Robert Hanssen and his family cooperated with Mr Wise.

Customer Reviews:
Handy Handbook.......2006-05-08
The "Codename: Kids Next Door '2x4 Technology Handbook'" is one of the ultimate books in KND knowledge. (The other is "Sooper Secrets and Boomerang Bloopers".)
This book, presented by Numbuh Two, has SOME of the KND inventions used in episodes like "Operation: L.I.C.E." and "Operation: S.H.A.V.E.", and others you've never seen before ! Each gadget, weapon, and vehicle has the inside info on what it's used for and what it's made out of for their full potential. Also, each invention tells quite a story or two; especially with the fact that more new episodes are being aired.
So if you want to know about some of the KND doohickies and thingamabobs used in the TV show are, get this book and be amazed. Though I wish they'd put in more inventions and other stuff in there because I am surely more than certain there's many, many more than that !

Customer Reviews:
Solid research, interesting story.......2003-02-16
An intriguing case: a nearly pathologically archconservative FBI agent, Opus Dei credentials and all, convicted of selling countless top level secrets to the Soviets and their successors. Why?
First, the text was well-structured. It started in Hansen's youth, and examined his relationship with his father. The authors returned to that relationship a few times but they didn't dwell on it. Personally, I get tired of overanalysis, journalists who like to think they're Freud incarnate. I feared a few times that the book was getting into that but, the analysis was brief enough that it could be seen as speculation rather than as psychoanalysis.
The peripheral details of the story were most interesting: the near worship of J. Edgar Hoover, as if anticipating his reincarnation years after he'd died; the uncanny details of Opus Dei (which has interested me more to the point that I plan to read lots more on that bizarre cult!); the stories of the other spies of the era, e.g., Aldrich Ames, and their relationship to that Hansen case, and the number of KGB agents stationed in the US!
But the focus was on Bob Hansen, Opus Dei Catholic, who felt that communism was the earthly manifestation of the Prince of Darkness himself. I mean, God knows, we all have sexual fantasies. I suppose overpopulation would not be a problem if we didn't. But this guy with six kids, who went to 6:30 mass every day and was an FBI agent who argued the inerrancy of the bible, I wouldn't expect porn posting from him on the early Internet. But Hansen didn't let us down.
I tend to shy away from texts that provide too many answers. This did not. The authors returned to the issue that it was apparently NOT money that motivated Hansen. They conclude, without being offensive about it, that much of his drive seems to have been inside, trying, for example, to show up his father who was never satisfied with Bobby's accomplishments; to show up his FBI colleagues who felt he was a snob who did little but lecture to them. When discussing one of Hansen's contracts with the Soviets, the authors suggest that he discussed money "like a flower child with a trust fund," i.e., had it been his major motive, he could have asked for much, much more, and gotten it. They implied that it must have been somewhat of a motive, as he had a flock of kids and they had college tuitions and the like to worry about. But his motives had to have been deeper than just cash.
Oh, and the authors are not easy on the FBI. Hansen took a stripper friend of his on a trip to Hong Kong, a lifestyle contradiction that may have indicated there was something wrong. And no one even noticed. What, one of our FBI brothers? But the book ends with some of the techniques the bureau contemplated to catch potential spies before such a thing happens again. They concluded--wisely--that all the hi-tech devices, polygraphs, or psychological fantasies in the book won?t preclude such a thing. That's the price one pays to be a "free country."
All I will say about the vocal performance is that it was well-done. It holds a second, though, to the story, something the US, the FBI, and probably even the KGB veterans will be pondering for a long time.

Book Description
Hope Hathaway doesn't distrust all men . . . just the ones who make promises to her like her no-good, cheating ex-husband did. Still, she's happy with life as a single mom in a small town-donning overalls every day, driving her son's school bus, and escaping into the world of Sela Theodore, the heroine of her romantic spy novels. Until, that is, Chandler Adams comes to stay next door. Chandler is gorgeous. The best-looking thing to drop into Bearsville since the hunky Fed Ex guy's truck broke down there several years before. Even better, Chandler's got a sense of humor, too, telling her they have something in common-she writes spy thrillers and he's an international spy. But after a little snooping, Hope finds out he really is a spy. After a series of escapes and a growing fondness for Hope's son, Chandler finally decides he's a spy ready to come in from the cold to warm Hope's heart forever. But can he get Hope to trust his promise? To believe in love again? Or is it truly a mission impossible?
Cathy Liggett lives with her husband, son and daughter in Loveland, Ohio.
Customer Reviews:
tongue in cheek undercover romance.......2005-06-04
Author of three romantic spy novels under the pseudonym of Hope Starr, Hope Hathaway lives in Bearsville, New York raising her fifth grade son Theodore by herself and driving the school bus. She does not trust men ever since her ex spouse Robert walked out on her after cheating while she gave birth.
Moving into her Uncle Cary's B&B is hunk Chandler Adams, who informs her that he is an international spy going domestic. She assumes somehow he knows about her other life and has a sense of humor. Still when he leaves for Manhattan, she decides to be just like her heroine Sela Theodore and follow him. However, she soon learns that the glamorous world of her novels is not quite the same inside a musty car trunk. Already realizing she is involved and wanting to keep her safe, Chandler decides to let Hope stay by him as he works to uncover to break up an art fraud ring, but finds he loves sharing under the cover work even inside car trunks with Hope at his side.
Though Hope trailing Chandler seems out of character for this single suburban mom, THE SPY NEXT DOOR is a tongue in cheek undercover romance. The lighthearted story line is fun as Chandler tells Hope he is a spy just in from the cold and she reacts by spying on him, which leads to both into trouble. Fans of blithe romantic romps will appreciate this second chance at love starring a debonair former spy turned under the cover operative and an author no longer in the cold when it comes to warm relationships with her man.
