5 out of 5 stars As good as guidebooks get.......2000-08-17

This is as good as a guidebook can get.

It is concise- it is not a encylopedia volume to lug around town; It is informative- with history of the city and its surroundings, the book is very thorough and written very very well; It is well illustrated- restaurants, hotels, attractions are color-coded differently and there are a ton of great illustrations that really do justice to the charm of the city.

Despite having grown up in Seattle, this book opened my eyes to a whole new world of places to go and restaurants to check out that I previously didn't see.

I would like to shake the hand of the man who put together such a fine guidebook- I have one for the Washington DC area as well!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent, and candid, review of the city.......1999-10-02

I really liked how well Seattle was described, though in a very general manner. Small glimpses of the city were given and well critiqued. Very helpful, even for relocation.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You MOM!.......2002-06-05

My mother, the wonderful mother she is, being of great kindness had Dan Thiessen sign the copy she bought me. As a very young child, one of my first restaurant memories was eating out at the Space Needle restaurant. Since then, I took my nieces there for a girl's day out lunch and am still fascinated by the rotating restaurant.

Seattle has so many great restaurants. Palisade is also featured and we have had family parties there in the past. John Howie is an expert on Plank cooking and you might also enjoy his Cedar Plank Cookbook.

Recently we had dinner right next to the fireplace at Ray's Boathouse where Charles Ramseyer is standing! That is the best spot in the whole restaurant, right next to the fireplace.

Then, there is the Metropolitan Grill, Canlis, Painted Table, Herbfarm (really in Woodinville and look for the amazing Herb Farm Cookbook by Jerry Traunfeld), Flying Fish and so many other familiar restaurants that are all connected to my family memories.

So, if you live in Seattle you will want a copy of this cookbook for sure. If you are wondering what all the talk is about and why the restaurants are so famous, this cookbook will give you a small taste of the bounty of the Northwest.

            Some of the great recipes:

            Chicken in Lettuce Cups
            Grilled King Salmon
            Pumpkin Soup
            Cajun BBQ Prawns
            Eggplant Roulades
            Thai Curry Sea Scallops
            Winter Squash Gnocchi
            Apples Baked in Pastry
Layered Goat Cheese & Vegetable Salad
Prosciutto, Spinach & Mind Wrapped Lamb
            Wicked Shrimp
            Huckleberry Galettes
            Black Rice Cakes

If you love the recipes or are just taking a vacation in Seattle, there is a restaurant directory in the back of the book.

When purchasing this book, you are also helping to support ACCESS. Their mission is to alleviate homelessness and poverty through developing community leadership. They have a list of resources in the back of the book that also include recommended reading like: The Way Home, the Cathedral Within and Revolution of the Heart.

            Your generosity and compassion
may be the turning point in someone's life. ~Access

4 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook that Raises Money for a Great Program.......2000-02-04

This is a gorgeous cookbook that does more than just serve up some of the best recipes the most talented chef's in Seattle have to offer but also includes wonderful stories about the chefs and about the FareStart program that trains homeless men and women in job skills and life skills and gives them their life back. The incredible success of the program is the result of great community support and this cookbook is another example of that.

                    Book Description

Throughout history, every culture has had its own ideas on what growing up and growing old. This volume is the first to highlight the role of age in determining behaviour, and expectations of behaviour, across the life span of an inhabitant of ancient Rome. Drawing on developments in the social sciences, as well as ancient evidence, the authors focus on the period c.200BC - AD200, looking at childhood, the transition to adulthood, maturity, and old age. They explore how both the individual and society were involved in, and reacted to, these different stages.

3 out of 5 stars Ageing the hard way.......2003-03-12

Learning isn't always easy or fun. This is an important book and one that people should read if they are seriously interested in the classical Roman world. You need to understand the social aspect of history as well as the fun stuff. Reading about wars, political rivalry, gladiators, legions, emperors, and the adventures of ancient Rome can be a lot of fun and can teach you a lot. However, if you are serious you have to read the boring stuff as well and this book covers that. I needed to know more about the life course of every day Romans and purchased this book to tell me about it. The book does the job, but it is an extremely boring read. The book covers everything from birth to death for both men and women. It covers how women were treated as children, young adults, wives, and finally mothers. The male side is a little more complicated and the book goes into detail of a boy's childhood and then young adult and joining the military, possibly a political career and marrying and divorcing several times for political reasons. There are some good examples of depicting the life course in Roman art that are in the book. Also, the authors have scientifically examined evidence on ageing and at what age they moved from one life course to another (i.e. young adult to senator or praetor). They have graphs explaining probability of survival at birth. There is a useful appendix as well showing the various ages at which different classes of people moved from child, adult, parent, and grandparent. I enjoyed the authors take on being old in Rome. Old people were looked down upon as no longer mattering when it came to politics or a social life. They were expected to just stay home and live out the rest of their years quietly. Cicero married a very young woman at a very old age and this was looked down upon as well. An old man marrying for love was something to be made fun of because people married more for money and political alliances versus love. In this case Cicero did marry for money because he needed to pay debts, but the marriage only lasted a year. As I said earlier the book does a good job of explaining the life course, but falls short of being entertaining, but learning isn't always fun.

                                    Book Description

Mary Call has promised her dying father to keep her brother and sisters together forever on the mountain, and never to take any help from strangers. She is determined to keep her word. No matter what. At first she is sure she can manage. Romey, Ima Dean, and Devola help gather herbs to sell in town; the riches of the mountains will surely keep the family clothed and fed. But then winter comes, fast and furious, and Mary Call has to learn that the land where the lilies bloom is also a cruel and unforgiving place, and it may take more than a promise to keep her family together.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting and different.......2007-10-12

I finished reading this book last night. Although it wasn't the best book I've ever read, it held my attention. I think the book's main theme was about surviving and handling life's problems with perseverance and dignity.

It also enlightended me about wildcrafting (making money with medicinal herbs) and a few new vocabulary words such as trogolyte ( a cave-dweller). I thought the ending was flat and too easy though. This would be a good book for older children and young teens.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A Book About Survival.......2007-01-05

I first read it when I was young and loved it and the movie. Now as a teacher with young teenagers I thought it would be a good book to read in our Language Arts class. The girls thought the book was a good book on the theme of survival. The connected with Mary Call being fourteen and trying to keep her family together. They thought she was courageous and showed great determination. Each of my students felt the eay Mary Call felt in the events that uncurled. It is a great book about a young girl trying to survive in a world that presents itself with many obstacles.

                                    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful story.......2006-06-28

This book transfixed me like no other has for a long time. The story alone is one that pulls in the reader; how will these four children survive against the odds? Very little money, no adult to help them, and they are trying desperately to live up to promises made to their late father before he died.

But it's the language, the writing that really captivates the reader. The voices are so strong; you can hear Appalachia in every utterance; the cadence is so real. I was with this family -- in particular 14-year-old Mary Call -- for the entire journey, sharing their small victories, aching along with their profound sadness. Mary Call is a strong character; with her steely determination she is a force, a great role model for young girls.

I would highly recommend this book to young readers. It's an absolute treasure.

                                    4 out of 5 stars A Tough 14-year-old Girl.......2006-01-11

Meet Mary Call, a fourteen-year-old who has what it takes to get along in the world: spunk! When she vows to hold her secretly--yes, secretly--orphaned family together, and to keep her dreamy sister from marrying a "villain," she turn into one of the most enterprising, tough, courageous, and unforgettable heroines you will ever meet. (There is a movie about this story.)

                                    4 out of 5 stars Shaun Grewal.......2005-12-02

The beginning was kinda boring, but when you get into the book it starts to get really good and sad. Mary Call's father died of sickness and before he died his father said to not tell anyone about his death. She also has two other sisters and a brother and one of her sisters has a man that loves her, but she's only fourteen and the guy (Kiser) is pushing fourty. So Mary Call has to take care of her brother (Romey), and her two sisters (Ima Dean and Devola) without telling nobody of the death of her father. This book is really good for young adults.

Bill and Lily's stories of their lives in Alaska begin as teenagers, through territorial days, and young statehood. Their adventures are unique and entertaining as are their lives of energetic pioneers in the new state of Alaska. These Two Alaskans have produced a wonderful collection of experiences during Alaska's frontier days, beginning in the early 1900s and continuing to the present day.

                                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great insight into a very wonderful family........1998-10-07

Bill and Lily have opened their wonderful lives for the reader to enjoy and respect. Many of the stories reflect the typical Alaskan family doing the exceptional things we do. But consider the span of nearly 100 years for both Bill and Lily, and what a great blend of traditional values and modern day growth and adaptation!

And the best of all... How Honest!!
