Upper West Side expands to Brooklyn........2006-11-10
Not having lived in New York City since the early 1980s, until my niece graduated from Yale and moved to Brooklyn, I still thought that all of the action was in Manhattan. This riveting book furthered her endeavor to disabuse me of that illusion, even though I will always be an inveterate Upper West Sider at heart.
Brooklyn!.......2005-07-09
I think this book is a great resource for someone who is new to the area. It gives a listing of various events, businesses, etc. in Brooklyn. It divides the borough up by neighbhorhoods which makes it user-friendly. I recommend this book for someone who is new to the Brooklyn area.
The Most Comprehensive Book Out There!!.......2004-04-18
This book is the best resource for everything-Brooklyn! This book puts Zagats to shame. It is the perfect guide to key Brooklyn neighborhoods, and you should not leave home without it! In fact, I keep a copy in my car, just in case... If I could give a book a 6 star rating, this book would get it!
New, Improved and Just in Time.......2004-04-14
I've owned both of the previous editions of this guidebook and the new one is the biggest and best yet. While I've hit a lot of these places before, the authors seem to have found a few new ones that even this veteran of Brownstone Brooklyn didn't know about. What I enjoy most is taking the book along and just cruising a new neighborhood from one end to the other. That's how I discovered Brighton Beach, with this book under my arm. I give this one a two-thumbs up and five stars. Want to know Brooklyn? This is the book!
Good news!.......2003-04-14
This is still the most comprehensive guidebook to old and new Brooklyn. And, a little birdie tells me that there's another one in the pipeline...

Book Description
Now in paperback, the epic biography that critics across the board agree "deserves to become the standard one-volume life of FDR" (*The Economist)
Franklin Delano Roosevelt stands astride American history like a colossus. Having pulled the nation out of the Great Depression and led it to victory in the Second World War, in his four terms as president Roosevelt transformed an inward-looking country into the greatest superpower the world had ever known. Few biographies have been able to capture the full scope, the charisma, and the complexities of the man in full-until Conrad Black's Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In this extraordinary and eminently readable assessment, Black-a staunch conservative-takes to task the Roosevelt naysayers, lays bare the Yalta myth, and makes a surprising and compelling case that that FDR was the most influential and important person of the twentieth century.
Hailed by critics from all sides of the political spectrum as "masterful," "epic," and the "best biography of Roosevelt yet," Franklin Delano Roosevelt is bar-none the definitive biography of the 32nd president. It is an essential resource for anyone who wishes to understand not only Roosevelt-but the very history of the twentieth century, both in America and throughout the world.
Customer Reviews:
Tough read but worth the effort!.......2007-10-01
This one was a tough read - 1134 pages and a couple of laps around the world later I finished - but it was definitely worth the time. While not as readable as David McCullough, Conrad Black not only tells the amazing story of FDR, but also puts you right in the middle of this pivotal time in American History. Sometimes vindictive, often underestimated, FDR's ability to lead and leverage public opinion is unmatched by any modern day president. The complicated relationship between Stalin, Roosevelt and Churchill was navigated with great expertise. The personalities surrounding him - Eleanor, Teddy Roosevelt's side of the family, Stimson, Smith, MacArthur, Patton, Eisenhower, etc. are cause to hit the Barnes and Noble shop again soon for a few more biographies. If you like American history and biographies, this book comes with my recommendation.
Too opinionated!.......2007-08-28
The material is presented in an incredibly slanted way. The author will frequently refer to the fact that a particular person's beliefs were "misguided" or "objectively wrong", or "a brilliant solution", skipping over any of the details or alternative perspectives that might cast any sort of light on the topic. The book therefore becomes just so much ax-grinding by Conrad Black, to the point where the reader must look with such suspicion on nearly every sentence, that it's not really worth reading the book in the first place. to get a clear understanding of the material, the reader will inevitably have to seek out other publications. And if Black's work is the reader's initial introduction to FDR's biography, there is the very real risk that Black's ax-grinding may permanently tilt one's perspective.
Looking back at some of these positive reviews, I'm stunned that people recommend this book. Although a lot of research clearly went into it, the author's heavy bias marks the text as mere pulp, unscholarly and essentially dishonest.
If you expect this book to be better than other one-volume biographies of FDR because it is so long, think again. A big disappointment.
FDR in War and Peace.......2007-05-30
Conrad Black, a Canadian press baron who is actually a real British baron has written the single best one volume biography of Franklin D. Roosevelt. This book excels for three distinct reasons.
First, the Baron Black of Crossharbour in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets---to use his legal name and title---is an exceptionally good writer. The text is a smooth and easy read.
Second, and this is where Lord Black is at his best, he fully develops Roosevelt's character and personality in this book. Although this skill might seem like a fairly obvious one for a biographer, it is one that skips to many who take on this type of writing. What made Roosevelt great--and that he was--was his character and vision. He could be sneak and manipulative, like any other good politician, but he knew what type of leadership the nation needed, what made the nation great and provided those things in abundance. He had that "vision thing." He had studied the life and career of his famous "Uncle Ted" and offered the public the same type of leadership that the first Roosevelt had.
While Theodore Roosevelt was a man of character in public and private, his distant cousin's was more public. FDR was unfaithful to a trying and difficult wife, an emotionally distant father to his children, and although exceptionally charming, emotionally distant from most people.
Finally, the book is an up-to-date assessment of historical work on Roosevelt's twelve years in the White House. The bulk of the book focuses on the presidency with Black getting to 1932 in a little over 200 pages. He sees FDR working to maintain the capitalist system during the Great Depression. He always liked to keep his political options and encouraged a good deal of conflict within the bureaucracy. The New Deal does not see as extensive coverage as World War II. Black gives FDR high marks for his work as Commander-in-Chief. He set the policy, maintained the vision and generally avoided details. This type of leadership drove his generals and admirals crazy, but he knew what was possible and took the attitude that good was good enough. This might not have been the most efficient way to win the war, but it worked. He certainly avoided micromanaging the military the way some of his predecessors have in the years since. Although Canada and the United States are similar in many ways, the fact that a foreigner can offer an exceptionally nuanced assessment of FDR's administration is yet more testimony to Black's skill as a biographer.
If you are prepared to tackle a 1200 page monster, this is an exceptionally good book.
A Great Book About A Great Man !!!.......2007-05-23
The best biography of FDR I have ever read and I have read at least eight others. Prior to reading this great book I had always considered Frank Freidels book: "FDR A Rendevous with Destiny" the best and most scholarly biography of his life. This book is superbly researched and a great read to boot.
A big book over 1100 pages but it is well worth the readers time.
A great big BRAVO to you Mr. Conrad Black.
The plot to overthrow FDR.......2007-03-02
If you are intersted in the life of FDR, you might be interseted to learn about the plot that almost cost him his Presidency. You can read about it in The Plot to Seize the White House by Jules Archer.

Kudlinski brings Franklin Delano Roosevelt to life........2004-07-01
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was born into a life of comfort --- one could almost say a life of luxury. He had a beautiful home, was tutored privately, had a pony to ride and a boat to sail, and went on European vacations. His mother had very definite ideas as to how she wanted her son to live his life, and her word was very much the law in the Roosevelt household. Franklin went to a prestigious boarding school and then on to Harvard, just as his parents wished.
It was only when he was in his twenties that he began to assert his independence. He decided that he wanted to marry the niece of the great "Teddy" Roosevelt, a relative and former President of the United States. "Mother" was not pleased with his choice but Franklin insisted.
Franklin had just begun his political career when he was struck down and crippled by polio. His mother wanted him to go to the family home where she could care for him. But Franklin was not going to let polio destroy his dreams, and he fought very hard to prove to the American public that he was strong enough to be a good candidate --- first for Governor of New York, and later for President of the United States. He was determined to show them that a person stricken with polio could still be a great leader; he was so successful in this mission that he was elected President for an unprecedented four terms. He helped pull the United States out of the dark years of the Depression and led the country through World War II. With a huge grin on his face, he cheered up the American public when few others could.
In addition to documenting his remarkable accomplishments as a leader, author Kathleen Kudlinski also touches on Franklin's private life. We learn that he was afraid of fire because he couldn't run from it, he exercised for hours so that he would be able to do what was required of him as President, and though his leg braces hurt him terribly, he never said a word or complained. Franklin founded the March of Dimes and his support helped hundreds of polio victims. By the end of his third term in office, Franklin grew tired and terribly ill, but he still chose to run for President again because his country needed him.
Kudlinski brings Franklin Delano Roosevelt to life, giving him a real face, heart and smile.

Book Description
In 1935, the Spokane police regularly extorted sex, food, and money from the reluctant hobos (many of them displaced farmers who had fled the Midwestern dust bowls), robbed dairies, and engaged in all manner of nefarious crimes, including murder. This history was suppressed until 1989, when former logger, Vietnam vet, and Spokane cop Tony Bamonte discovered a strange 1955 deathbed confession while researching a thesis on local law enforcement history. Bamonte began to probe what had every appearance of widespread police crime and a massive cover-up whose highlight was the unsolved murder of Town Marshall George Conff. The fact that many of those involved, now in their 80s and 90s, were still alive made it imperative that Bamonte unravel this mystery. The result is Breaking Blue, a white-knuckle ride through institutional corruption and cover-up that vividly documents Depression-era Spokane and an extraordinary case that few believed would ever be brought to light.

Breaking Blue.......2007-05-07
This was a great story and a very interesting read, because it was a real case that a lawman solved.
WOW!.......2007-01-17
Mr. Egan has become my favorite non-fiction writer. I've reread The Good Rain several times, and read The Worst Hard Time as soon as it became available in paper back. I live in the Pacific Northwest and have come to appreciate the history that surrounds me. Mr. Egan's hero, Sheriff Bamonte, faced Herculean obstacles, and Mr. Egan presented it beautifully in Breaking Blue. After I finished reading Breaking Blue, I quickly mailed the book to my son who graduated from Gonzaga in 2005 and recommended that he read it since the story takes place in the Spokane area. The Spokane River which runs through downtown Spokane has a new meaning for me now!
Fantastic Read.......2006-09-15
One of my best recent reads. Part crime story, part historical and cultural biography, and part present-day human drama. All parts are addressed evenly. Great for anyone interested in the sometimes strange land of Eastern Washington and Spokane's Wild West past.
A Spokane kind of justice.......2004-03-27
Outsiders familiar with Spokane will tell you it is a strange and sometimes unfair place. This book, along with Jack Olson's "Son", can in some measure tell you *why* this is so. Like that other classic work of true crime, the plot concerns specific events and individuals who for a long time "get away with" horrific if somewhat pathetic offences. Behind that story, however, the setting takes on a character of its own, and so you learn not only of crooked cops but of a community's perverse will to look the other way until all hope of justice is ready to die with the last witness. In the end, the truth may be revealed but does not necessarily prevail.
Quest For Justice Symbolically Succeeded.......2003-02-25
In addition to being a real-life investigative crime solving book, Eagan's descriptive writing in "Breaking Blue" touched upon many areas that brought the people of the 1930s and this part of the country to life. The natural beauty of the inland Pacific Northwest in the setting of the Great Depression. Hobos, gambling, (...), saloons, opium dens, Nez Perce tribe and police corruption. This work provides a historical glimpse, within its' investigation, which ultimately led to success. Tony Bamonte, A County Sheriff in Pen Oreille County in eastern Washington state, turned his 500 page Master's Thesis into a murder-case solver.
Clyde Ralstin lived a life in the West in some fashion of the Wild Wild West. After he committed the murder, he was fingered out by a fellow detective in the police department. The detective was ordered by his superiors to stop the investigation and be quiet. At the same time, Ralstin left town. Files on both men "disappeared." But many statements and investigations were all uncovered by Bamonte. Living out his final years in Montana, Ralstin was aware of the tightening noose around his neck for what he did 54 years before. The stress and anxiety he experienced, which ultimately help end his life, was the only small amount of justice he received.
Some people close to Ralstin actually accused Bamonte of causing trouble and being the problem. Such is sometimes the twisted loyalty of the blue line, when a member commits wrong doing, even the murder of a fellow police officer. Ralstin stated, "the whole department was crooked back then. Why are they coming after me?"
Bamonte submitted his Master's thesis to his professor at Gonzaga University with trepidation. Is this 500 page piece of work going to be scoffed at, rejected, or laughed at? His professor said it was the most intriguing thesis he'd ever encountered. After some media attention over this 54 year-old local murder case, some turned the tables on Bamonte. During Bamonte's re-election campaign in 1990, the Spokane police chief held 3 press conferences publicly criticizing Bamonte. Actions like this are unheard of. Bamonte lost the election. Why did the the Spokane police chief do this? Because Bamonte was investigating a similar murder in his jurisdiction.
After Clyde Ralstin died 1989, the murder case was closed.

Me and Einstein.......2000-05-31
The book was not at all what I thought it would be about. It hardly even mentioned the story of Einstein not being able to read until he was nine or other famous dyslexic people. The book was an outdated story of a young child who was hiding his secret about not knowing how to read. If the book was brought up to date, it would probably be a more moving story.

Janet's simplicity of style teaches gently........1999-02-06
James R. Quinn I first met Janet in March, 1991. She was a participant in one of the "LifeStream" personal development seminars I conduct. Since 1975, I've had the privilege of working closely with over 15,000 people in Canada, New Zealand and all over the United States. I also work with organizations such as Walt Disney Feature Animation. This particular seminar is designed to help people to identify and break through self- limiting and self-sabotaging behaviors and attitudes. All people who attend my seminars want to make a difference in their lives. Perhaps they want more peace, more fun or higher self-worth. Perhaps they want less fear, less anger or less stress. From the beginning of the week, Janet was determined to not only make a difference in her life, but with her life. This book represents her commitment to make a difference. Janet's easy to follow guidelines will assist those in recovery of any type, and will ease the fears of those just recognizing the need for recovery. Your insights will come as you relate to her story, her life and how she is achieving her goals of self-love, mutual love, self-worth, peace and fulfillment. You'll enjoy reading of her recovery, but far more importantly, every so often you'll nod your head in agreement and say to yourself something like . . . "Yes! That's Right!" "What a great idea!" "She's been watching my spouse!" "That's me!" "I thought I was the only one!" Janet doesn't walk you step-by-step through every possible problem or issue, but, rather she has set down the guide posts for direction, reference and success. As I say in my seminars . . . "If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got." So if you really want to get something different from your life, you need to do something different! I've never met a person who didn't want a better life; however, I've met thousands who just didn't know how to change. Janet will show you how to change. You deserve the results in your life that you've always longed for, and that you can get!
Respectfully, James R. Quinn

Information is Power.......2000-02-21
Like Mr. Nadin's former job, this book is fast paced, and harrowing. While it suffers a bit in terms of continuity, it more than makes up for it in details and facts. His story is nothing new, just one more 'regular' Joe who has had to suffer the injustices heaped upon the common, working family by a corrupt system. His story is another fine example of the misinformation and inappropriate use of power that is used by our police and politicians alike to exercise their control over the masses. Buy this book.
Breaking The Blue Line - A Dying Declaration.......2000-02-15
This book was an eye-opener for me. If you have any interest in the criminal justice system, this book is for you. The author portrays the fierce loyalty that law enforcement officials have for each other, from local police to the national government. It describes what can and does happen when this loyalty is misguided and is used to protect those within the law enforcement community rather than those they've vowed to protect - the American people, and what happens when one of their own decides to stand up and protect the rights and freedoms of the citizens, you and me. Read this book and let it open your eyes.
Corruption Exposed.......2000-02-12
Like Mr. Nadin's former profession this book is fast paced and to the point. The author doesn't pull any punches or sugar coat a thing. What he talks about is an everyday reality that no one wants to recognize. It will only stay with us and fester and grow as long as people turn a blind eye to the issues, and do not exercise their right to vote. I give this book three and a half stars. It's enjoyable and entertaining. It's just too short.
