    5 out of 5 stars A Great Resource.......2007-05-15

DK Eyewitness travel books are some of the best on the market. You can glean more information from one of their books than you can from reading several offerings from their competitors. The full-color visuals, the detailed maps, and the interesting side-bars all add up to making this guide a perfect companion when planning a trip. If you're actually going on vacation, or simply dreaming of far-away places, this is the travel series for you.

5 out of 5 stars This has been needed.......2006-12-17

Northern California has needed its own travel book from Eyewitness and this is just the edition I was hoping for. San Francisco has lots of fun places to visit and they are all here. I like that it explains elsewhere to go in the state. If you are looking for a cultural city and a fun camping trip this is the perfect book to buy.

5 out of 5 stars Don't leave home without it.......2006-08-24

I have just returned from my sixth trip to San Francisco and used this particular guide for the last three. The detailed pictures helped me find new treasures, the info on transportation has saved me the cost of the guide many times over. I've used this to locate both child friendly activites and also intriguing adult adventures - different trips. This book is very well organized, beautifully illustrated and so packed with information it will take several more trips before I exhaust all it's possibilities.

I absolutely love this series of travel guides. When you first start thinking about a travel destination buy the book from this series, use it to plan your trip, take it along to guide you along the way and then bring it home to reminisce about your adventure. These guides are thorough, giving an overview of the history, climate etc as well as detailed information about food and lodging. The series is NOT updated as often as some others but up-to-date info in particulars are readily available elsewhere (other guides, both purchased and local freebies, and the internet). The pictures are a plus for locating things, detailed info about local food, transportation etc is very helpful.

The only drawbacks to this series are that the books tend to be rather heavy and the need to confirm some of the info.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Source!.......2006-01-19

The Eyewitness Travel Guide Series are by far the best references for the traveler who wants to know everything from history to practical information. I particularly enjoy knowing what types of foods/restaurants to try when I'm visiting a city and this guide certainly does a nice job detailing restaurants, food, and drink. The pictures in this guide are fantastic! A great souvenir to have after your vacation so you can look back and relive your trip!

3 out of 5 stars San Francisco Eyewitness Guides.......2005-09-26

Great Pictures. Info was out of date. Reviews were not helpful and did not include enough information.
I also had Frommer's guide to use but not up to date or helpful either.

I might try an eyewitness guide again - but not sure since info was not current. Again Great Pictures.

3 out of 5 stars Good but not great..........2007-01-06

I've tried a lot of different travel books and thought that I would try yet another new one for when my girlfriend came to visit me in San Francisco. I found the guide to lack sophistication and I didn't like the organization of the top ten lists. However, the map at the rear of the book was very good and the illustrations are nice. I'd say that it was better than having nothing but if I could do it again I probably would have purchased a different guide.

5 out of 5 stars A great way to see the city.......2006-12-17

This is the best possible guide you can have for walking around the city. While I would use another one for planning your vacation when you are going to be walking around the city this is one that cannot be beat. The recommendations for restaurants are very good and overall the city is well explained. If you are just going in for a day or two you could probably plan your trip with this book alone but any longer and I would use another.

    5 out of 5 stars handy! .......2006-03-17

I agree with previous reviewer who recommended using this as a companion to the Lonely Planet SF. Good plan! It worked for me. The maps in this book are indispensable and the information is sufficient without being overly detailed. Nice pictures, too! A good buy for all those traveling to SF =) Enjoy your trip!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Light Traveling!.......2005-03-12

We took this book to San Francisco and found it to be an excellent reference guide. There's just enough information for each subject that it gives you a good idea of the major points without being overly detailed. While it may be true that the bigger DK guide has more information, I prefer a simpler summary and find it pretty accurate in its listings of the "Top 10" for each area (dining, outside attractions, etc.) Loaded with information without weighing down any of your luggage!

5 out of 5 stars Great concise guide to SF.......2003-10-01

I've visited San Fran twice over the last three years, and must honestly say, that this is a very good book to have when visiting SF. Although not as detailed as Lonely Planet's SF city guide, which is black and white, with a few color maps, Top 10 SF, is a great companion book to LP's. Both may be used in unison, and no other guides are necessary. This by far is THE top 10 guidebook to SF!

Dorling Kindersley's travel guides are dazzling: not only do they tell you all about where you're going, they show you, in living color. This one is chock-full of photographs, maps, 3-D cutaways, and other graphics that create a virtual city in a book. Want to see the Golden Gate Bridge? DK not only gives you the vital information, but has a four-page spread with historical photos of the engineering feat under construction, diagrams explaining just how the suspension works, and a list of facts and figures related to the bridge. Thinking about a visit to the infamous Alcatraz Island (now part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area)? You'll find a detailed illustration of the island as well as a photograph, a 3-D cutaway of the former maximum-security prison, a timeline, and even photos of famous inmates. The city is divided into eight areas (each one color-coded), with a street-by-street description of the sites in both pictures and words. DK also places a premium on orientation. Not only are there ample maps, including 3-D illustrations, but historic buildings like the Transamerica Pyramid are dissected to reveal their interiors while San Francisco's many museums have color-coded floor plans. DK also provides a pictorial history of San Francisco, with great sections on earthquakes and the city's diverse cultures. Of course, you'll find plenty of pages devoted to where to stay, eat, shop, and play, and how to get around, from cable cars to BART. As if all this isn't enticing enough, DK has suggestions for guided walks and information on sights outside the city limits, such as Oakland, Point Reyes National Seashore, and the San Francisco Zoo. While the title includes Northern California, don't expect as much detail there. Unlike San Francisco itself, Mendocino, the Napa Wine Country, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, and Carmel are given minimal coverage. For the city by the bay, however, you couldn't choose a more fun and fact-filled guide. --Lesley Reed

This is an incredible book. The illustrations are unbelievably detailed. I used to live in SF and still I could study this book for hours. Even if you have been to every place in the book, you will still learn something. This is the perfect gift for anyone traveling to San Francisco and/or Northern California. I can't recommend this book enough.

          5 out of 5 stars An excellent guide for a first-time visitor.......2002-05-27

This guide was very helpful for my recent trip to SF and easily the best of the three I carried. Detailed maps, readable and accessible local information, and informative articles with the beautiful illustrations made this the easy choice over Lonely Planet and its more detailed maps made it a first choice over National Geographic's San Friancisco guide for me. You will need another map for a better detailed overview give if you plan to drive in the city since none of these guides provide that.

5 out of 5 stars Great handbook for SFO visitors - great graphics and photos.......2002-02-14

I love the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide series - and other books from DK - Dorling Kindersley (...). The travel guides are very handy, the details in the guides are very interesting and very well done with great page layouts and plenty of pictures and graphics explaining architectures of popular buildings and maps of neighborhoods in good detail and style. A great buy for anyone visiting San Francisco and those already living there too to get to know their city better (in fact, now I make sure I buy a DK guide for every location I visit!).

There is a version that comes with a larger map and quick cue cards in a leather binder/pouch as well. Great to carry around or gift but costs slightly more. Worth it.

The Eyewitness Guides are great visual tools. They tend to lack hotel/restaurant information, but the sight seeing info is tops. No surprise with the emphasis on visuals.

One additional benefit - you can use the great pictures to fill in you travel scrapbooks.

Commemorating the 40th anniversary of his assassination, JFK: Remembering Jack is a compelling homage in word and image to one of the world's great leaders. Culled primarily from the archives of the Kennedy Museum and Library, JFK weaves together quotations and anecdotes with both rare and familiar photographs of the public figure and the private man. A 60-minute audio CD featuring some of Kennedy's greatest speeches, press conferences, and phone calls from the White House brings Kennedy's voice to life for a new generation. A singular package, attractively priced, JFK: Remembering Jack speaks to every man and woman, just as the President it honors spoke for them.

5 out of 5 stars HIS FORESIGHT WAS INCREDIBLE.......2004-01-03

I first happened to see the book at a local grocery store. It was so small and thin that I didn't even give it a second look. Even though I am a great Kennedy fan. However, at Christmas, my youngest son, gave the book to me as a gift. I smiled and thanked him and thought that I would look at it just to please him. But then I found the cd that came along with the book and it was incredible. In 1940 JFK tells a radio audience that if America didn't start re-arming we would be caught off guard the same as london was. What an incredible foresight he had. The other selections on the cd are well worth listening too. Including JFK reciting an autobiographical segment, handling a stubborn southern governor regarding James Merridith, and an adorable exchange between President Kennedy and his 2 year old son.

5 out of 5 stars Jack Kennedy has a special place in my heart........2003-12-11

This book is truly a wonderful tribute to JFK.

Greetings from Canada from a Canadian who wants to honor the memory of President John F. Kennedy.

Kennedy was my hero when I was a 12-year-old boy, and 40 years later, President Kennedy is a true hero in the heart of a 52-year-old man.

It seems hard to believe that 40 years have gone by since that very tragic day of Friday, Nov. 22, 1963. The day John F. Kennedy died, I shed tears and felt the world had lost a truly wonderful and remarkable leader.

In the 40 years since the death of President Kennedy, I have built up a collection of books, photographs and political buttons from Kennedy's campaign for president in 1960. On my office wall hangs a large campaign poster with a larger-than-life photograph with a caption that reads: "A Time for Greatness" - John F. Kennedy for President. On my desk is a bust of President Kennedy. It is my way of honoring his memory and legacy.

President Kennedy offered America and the world hope and a vision of greatness. He had courage and, like (those portrayed in) his book "Profiles in Courage," he was indeed a man of courage.

Over the years, I had the honor to shake the hand of Robert F. Kennedy and U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, and in 1989, I spent a whole day at the John F. Kennedy Museum in Boston, where I had the honor of spending time with one of John F. Kennedy's closest friends - David Powers. Mr. Powers shared with me some wonderful memories of JFK.

These encounters with history have reinforced my heartfelt belief that John F. Kennedy was truly a wonderful and remarkable world leader.

Back in December of 1974, on a cold morning, I made the trip to Arlington National Cemetery to visit the grave of President Kennedy. Though it was early and cold, I was moved by the line-up of people filing past President Kennedy's grave. Thousands of people like myself were moved by the life and times of a leader gunned down in the streets of Dallas.

Forty years have not changed my affection and admiration for President John F. Kennedy; he has a special place in my heart.

Michael McCafferty lives in Regina, Saskatchewan

5 out of 5 stars CD alone is worth the money........2003-12-04

With the purchase of this book, you get not only great pictures of the Kennedy's, but also a wonderful 60 minute CD with some of Kennedy's greatest press conferences, speeches and some phone conversations. This alone is a seller for this book. Bringing back JFK, if only for a few moments is awsome. He did things his way, you hear his conviction and beliefs in his voice, and his choice to follow those beliefs, is awe inspiring.

I reccomend along with this book and CD the purchase of the book, "John Fitzgerald Kennedy: A Life In Pictures". They are superb together and what I feel to be 2 of the best 40th Anniversary Commemorative books on JFK.

          5 out of 5 stars A LIFE.......2003-11-20

A wonderful pictorial of a brave man.
No one is asking you to feel sorry for the Kennedys. But they do deserve respect. Yes, they could have lived long lives and grown full heads of grey hair if they had gone "with the flow" but instead they were killed for standing up for what they believed in.
Brave people truly live Life while alive, more so in one year than cowards do in a lifetime.

"Speak not evil of the absent: it is unjust."
          ~George Washington

The psychology underlying eating disorders is fraught with contradictions and uncertainties; researchers are just beginning to formulate the exact biochemical and emotional combination that impels a woman to binge and purge, or starve herself, or chronically overeat. But the familial forces behind such self-destructive behavior are what Margaret Bullitt-Jonas focuses on in her ultimately graceful memoir, Holy Hunger.

As in 1998's Wasted, where Marya Hornbacher's anorexia, bulimia, and exercise addiction were fueled by her parents' implicit orders to excel, Bullitt-Jonas was born into a family of extreme overachievement. Her father ("the rapscallion, the charmer, the rogue"), a covertly alcoholic English professor at Harvard, and her chronically depressed mother, a trustee at neighboring Radcliffe, maintained a miserable home atmosphere. Her father called her "a failure in life even before you've begun to live." Bullitt-Jonas reacted by addictively overeating in her desperation to sate an emotional hunger she couldn't quite identify.

Holy Hunger is her way of answering the question: "How did my desires go so awry?" She started as a child: "So who knows what I felt, who knows what I was really longing for.... I had no idea what it was--a compulsion, a desire, an unspoken something or other--that caused my small hand to dart out, reach for an extra slice of bread, then slip it quietly, unseen, into my pocket." Bullitt-Jonas's overeating spells through her adolescence and early adulthood are, as expected, devastating. But she manages to save herself through faith in the Higher Power she defers to in her Overeaters Anonymous meetings; her prayers for help; the almost eerie assistance she finds by reading Alice Miller. She transcends her desperation, offering a valuable lesson in the power of spirituality.

            Book Description

"A worthwhile tale about true nourishment that comes not from [eating] but from engaging on a spiritual path." --Los Angeles Times

In this wrenchingly honest, eloquent memoir, Bullitt-Jonas describes a childhood darkened by the repressive shadows of her alcoholic father and her emotionally reclusive mother, whose demands for excellence, poise, and self-control drove Bullitt-Jonas to develop an insatiable hunger.

What began with pilfering extra slices of bread at her parents' dinner table turned into binges with cream pies and pancakes, sometimes gaining as much as eleven pounds in four days. When the family urged her father into treatment, the author recognized her own addiction and embarked on the path to recovery by discovering the spiritual hunger beneath her craving for food. Holy Hunger is a brave and perceptive account of compulsion and the healing process.

            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the wisdom of experience.......2007-01-26

I read Holy Hunger because I have a friend who is struggling with an eating disorder and because I had the pleasure of meeting Bullitt-Jonas at a conference. I was glad I did. Bullitt-Jonas is an Episcopal priest, writer, environmental activist, retreat leader, Harvard PhD, marathon runner, and spiritual director. She was also a food addict who writes to share the lessons she learned about compulsive overeating.

Bullitt-Jonas began binge eating in the tenth grade. By the time she was thirty food controlled her body, mind and spirit. She describes her late night forays to the grocery store where she would furtively buy her "drug of choice." Sometimes she would inhale an entire box of donuts in the car. Other times she would wait until she returned home to consume an entire pie at her kitchen counter. In one four day period she gained eleven pounds; on another occasion she did not eat anything for ten days. In one of many turning points, the pleasant lies told at the funeral of a colleague who had committed suicide outraged her. How could the family lie so badly about what had happened?

And then the penny dropped. Much of Bullitt-Jonas's book is about unearthing her family archaeology of enormous wealth but deep dysfunction. Her grandparents' home was lined with paintings of Picasso, Matisse, and Gaugin. Boarding school in Switzerland and Maryland was followed by Russian studies at Stanford and then Harvard. Her parents were polar opposites. Her mother was taciturn, private, and emotionally distant. Her father, a Harvard professor, was a volatile and verbal alcoholic who loved to sail his boat directly into a storm. In between were the people-pleasing, the peace-making, the perfectionisms that were pleas for love, and the emotional starvation not for food but for human affirmation. Over it all was an unspoken compact of silence: "we didn't do feelings in my house." The wealth could not cloak the deep emotional, psychological and spiritual poverty of everyone involved.

Eventually Bullitt-Jonas connected with Overeaters Anonymous and Adult Children of Alcoholics. She took an acting class, enrolled in Buddhist meditation, met the man she eventually married, and even rejoined her church community, all of which helped her to listen to her own voices, to discover her personal identity apart from her family, and to begin writing a new story. In the end, she construes her story as a memoir about desire, "the desire beyond all desire," as she puts it. Her words reminded me of the opening sentences of Augustine's Confessions, that "God has made us for Thyself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee." There are no victims or villains here, no shaming and blaming, either of herself or of her family. Rather, Bullitt-Jonas has written a beautiful story of redemption that combines courageous truth-telling with tender compassion. I hope she will write a sequel.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Book.......2006-01-16

Margaret Bullitt-Jonas has written a compelling account of her addiction to binge eating and the arduous process of recovery through a 12 steps program. She describes with great insight the poison of family secrets, based on her years growing up in a cold household where feelings were buried and everyone ignored her father's destructive alcoholism. During her own recovery, Bullitt-Jonas connects with a deep Christian faith, which is the subject of another book one hopes she will write one day. Bullitt-Jonas provides powerful descriptions and insight into the nature of addiction. This is a beautiful book, well written and filled with memorable stories about family secrets, a daughter's complex relationship with her mom and dad, and her deep need for connection and acceptance.

5 out of 5 stars Bravely and beautifully told........2004-06-13

It angers me that a couple of smug and snippy reviewers may have prevented this beautiful story from getting to all the people it could help. In my own twelve-step struggle, Margaret Bullitt-Jonas has become a strong companion on the uphill climb.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring & Profoundly Spiritual Book on Overeating.......2003-05-11

I could not put this book down. As a person who struggles with compulsive overeating and I have joined Overeater's Anonymous and found the program most effective. The author of this book has also benefitted from the life-saving work of OA and the help of God. A truly beautiful book, it should be read by all women! But especially those struggling with any eating disorder.

            5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Book.......2002-08-06

I don't have much to add to the positive reviews below, but I do want to underscore the quality of the writing, as well as the insight offered in this book. This is a narrative, rather than a 'how-to,' where the author really opens herself up, using her journey as a model for the journey so many of us must take. She is a wonderful example, expressing her life through her excellent writing.
