Customer Reviews:
Very Informative.......2007-09-26
This is a very detailed, well researched and written book about the known history of tattoos in Hawaii. However, in trying to design my own meaningful tattoo, I was personally looking for a book that would explain the various meanings of the individual tattoo designs which are common today, which this book does not.
THE BOOK THAT TELLS THE STORY.......2007-03-14
GREAT BOOK. IT GAVE ME SOME NEW IDEAS. I HAVE MET WITH THE AUTHOR. I WILL BE GETTING SOME INK FROM TRICIA. HAMMER FROM SAN FRANCISCO
I learned so much.......2007-01-29
This is a very well written book that truly explains the origins of Hawaiian tattoos and tattooing and brings the practice into the modern time and context.
I would have given it a rating of 5 but felt that it could be greatly enhanced with a glossary of Hawaiian language and tattooing terms.
I learned so very much and I am grateful to Tricia Allen for publishing her research and getting interviews with wearers of Hawaiian tattoos and the tattooists.
Terrific Hawaiian Tattoo Resource.......2006-08-28
For those fascinated by Hawaiian and Polynesian tattoos, this is a fantastic resource. There is a great combination of history, mini bios of tattoo artists, as well as stories of current Hawaiian people and their tattoo stories. The book concludes with examples of different patterns and designs, which are common among Hawaiian tattoos.
This is a must for tattoo collectors as well as tattoo shops who stock quality reference material. Mahalo!
I couldn't wait for this book to be published.......2006-08-20
For all lovers of Polynesian culture, and traditional native tattoo, this is a book you don't want to miss. It is historical, cultural, and modern at the same time. Tricia Allen is a celebrated tattoo artist in Polynesian circles, and to those of us who know and love the cultural connections her designs evoke. If you are interested in any of these things, check out her website, as well as this book.

Great book... poor "techniques" section, though..........2007-01-10
This book is definitely above-average, with detailed history and facts sections, a great chapter detailing PA' (lua 'dojos'), simple yet useful artwork and an interesting layout; my opinion, though, is that "Lua" is an excellent book to glimpse otherwise unknown aspects of the hawaiian unique culture and mindset - but don't expect to learn much about the practical part of this martial art!
The "weapons" section is extensive, while the chapter concerning techniques is in my opinion the weaker part of the book - the routines are explained too briefly, and of the hundreds 'AI (moves) that were listed, only the most intuitive are shown...
All in all, an interesting book about hawaiian culture and history, and a good starting point to at least get to know about Lua.
Lua: art of the Hawaiian Warrior.......2006-11-10
This volume is a professional expose presented on the highest quality paper for the long-term appreciation of its readers. The format is logical, the illustrations are well presented and described, and the photography is stunning.
The book is not an instruction manual but martial artists from other traditions will find familiar themes and approaches and "food for thought".
History Preserved.......2006-09-04
Lua, the Hawaiian martial art, went underground after the arrival of the missionaries in the early 1800s. Despite the suppression, clandestine masters passed on the secrets of lua to a select few. Over time, much of the art was lost and only one known master remained. Five men, including the four authors, found him and began four years of training until they, too, became `olehe (masters).
This book is both a tribute to their now-deceased instructor and a means of insuring the basics of the art are never lost (there's no doubt the masters have kept many of the secrets secret). A graphically beautiful book, typical of the Bishop Musuem Press, the text covers the amnient and recent ancient of the sport, including training, spirituality, weapons, and schools. Although this is not a "how to" book, one of several appendices includes 35 pages illustrating a number of lua techniques. Included are the Hawaiian names of hundreds of "moves" and the parts of the human body of concern to the lua warrior.
This book is a historical and cultural masterpiece Any student of ancient Hawai`i or anyone interested in preserving the Hawaiian culture will want a copy of their own.
Surprising.......2006-06-20
The book is overly heavy on terminology and anatomy charts, while fairly light on techniques. However, this is a very good overview book on a little-publicized art. The techniques largely have many analogs in more-publicized arts.
Those looking for commonalities among arts will get more out of the book than those looking for hidden secrets of various cultures. The fact is there are only so many ways two human bodies can interact in combat, so repetition across arts is to be expected. However, the techniques are in the main far more practical than those found in the typical strip-mall dojo.
The main strength of the book lies in its evaluation of the traditional weapons of the art. Granted, all of them have modern counterparts or could be improvised from modern materials, but the evolution of weapons in different cultures is always of interest. The Hawaiian interpretation of the modern dagger is especially cool!
Landmark Book.......2006-06-15
This book is the first on the traditional Hawaiian martial art of lua, and a real gem. It covers history, culture, and philosophy, as well as giving practical information about the different holds and strikes. It is very well illustrated with excellent graphics and paper. It is written in a conversational "talk story" style that is easy to read.
This book is a must-have for anyone interested in Hawaiian traditions, culture and values. It will also be of interest to practitioners in other martial arts such as Aikido, to get a cross-cultural perspective.

Book Description
Until recently, the cultural lore of the ancient warriors of Hawaii was considered lost. This absorbing history documents the complex customs and military traditions of the ancient koa warriors, and the deadly tools they used in battles among the rival chieftains and kings. The warriors employed a wide array of deceptively simple but brutally effective weaponry, much of it unique to the islands and utilizing local materials such as shark teeth. Featured here are the main types used in combat from ancient times until the arrival of Captain Cook in 1778, including spears and daggers, slings, tripping weapons, stone pikoi weapons, strangling cords, and others, along with detailed explanations of how these enchanting but quite lethal weapons were employed. Many rare color photos of the actual weapons, combined with information regarding techniques, strategies, and construction, are included in this vivid and comprehensive history.
Customer Reviews:
Detailed information about the Hawaiian koa and his weapons in one volume..........2007-07-22
Warrior Arts and Weapons of Ancient Hawaii, by artist Sid Campbell, is an amazing collection of paintings, drawings, and photographs of primarily ancient Hawaiian weaponry (pre-European contact). As an artist, Campbell paints collages of people and places. They make you pine to see the larger originals. His text describes in detail the weapons, how they were made, and how they were used. The book ends with a discussion of "strategy and tactics" in combat.
I suspect this final chapter is more speculative, with the actual weapons, many in the collection at the Bishop Museum, being factual. Figure 12 on page 16 suggests that it is a painting of "King Kahekili's Beach Assault," and the text describes an assault by King Kahekili of Maui on Kamehameha I, "raiding the Hawaiian coast." It sure looks like the background is Oahu with Diamond Head and the original Manoa stream in the background. Nevertheless, this is an extremely detailed book for those interested in the weaponry of koa (Hawaiian warriors). Connecting with those tiger shark-tooth weapons, no matter what planet you're from, gotta hurt.
Mahalo to the Brave Koa Warriors of the Islands.......2007-02-19
Mr Campbell's Book and artistry provided great insight into a culture of a warrior society that few of us have strived to learn and understand. I am a history buff and collect books and materials on warfare, combat arts, and other militaria. I treasure this book on Warrior Arts and Weapons of Ancient Hawaii. Thank you, Mr Campbell and your Hawaiian family for sharing this rich culture and wisdom with us.
Aloha,
Hank McKeithan

Book Description
The USS Missouri, the last battleship built by the United States, ruled the seas when she fired her nine 16-inch guns. Ronn Ronck tells the full, exciting story of this floating fortress, from its christening by President Truman's daughter, Margaret, to its final resting place the Arizona Memorial, which straddles the sunken hull of the USS Arizona. Over 80 historic photographs gathered from the National Archives in Washington D.C. trace the ship's remarkable half-century of service to the nation. A special chapter reveals what life was like in "war-time Hawaii" between the Japanes attack that sunk the Arizona and the new era of peace achieved aboard the Missouri.
Customer Reviews:
A big disapointment.......2007-05-08
I purchased this book because I am interested in battleships and saw that it was the guidebook of the USS Missouri memorial in Pearl Harbor. I was very disapointed to find almost no technical information regarding the Missouri such as is found in the guidebooks at other battleship memorials. Although this book contains a few nice color photographs, most of the WW II era photos are printed in a brownish sepia tone, presumedly to make them look more "antique"

Disappointment.......2004-10-09
Just before I saw this title on Amazon, I had spent eight glorious days on Oahu, my first trip to any of the islands. I was expecting photographs to supplement my own and text further to explore the history, culture, and modern life of the islands and their people. Alas, this book is so short on both that it borders on fraud. If you value your time and money, don't bother with it.

Wet behind.......2006-12-20
Wet behind the ears review makes me really sad.
The fact you're buying a book on surf culture and you
don't know the name david carson, well that's just mind numbing.
I don't even know what to say about the whole "being arty" comment.
Missed opportunity.......2006-12-04
Please be advised that the layout of this book is riddled with jumbled double print in varying type sizes overlaid over other print, making it impossible to read. I suppose that this was done in a failed attempt at being "arty". Make sure that you peruse a copy prior to buying it and then decide if you want to spend the money on a book with illegible text. In fairness, there are some interesting representations of surfing and art, presented chronologically. It's just a shame that the material wasn't presented in a format worthy of the subject.
Everything.......2005-11-04
In reponse, to Shannon David Earle review...As I was reading the book again last night I couldn't help but be amazed at how everything was so easy to read-and at the same time so illogical and chaotic. Something only Carson could make work. This book is critical for any surfer's library as the book not only is extremely well written, but it also incorporates the art it talks about into its page design. Buy it.
Beautiful Book.......2005-09-29
This is the most expansive book on the aesthetics of surfing! The impact on modern popular culture and design in general becomes evident after reading this book. Great writing throughout includes a Tom Wolfe essay.

for all his talk the guy is a total fraud!

Book Description
"Homophobia is America's leading hate crime", writes Barbara Rose Brooker, "and HIV/AIDS is its target. Homophobia and indifference are two of the factors in the spread of AIDS." In the mid-1980's Barbara Rose Brooker found herself in the midst of the AIDS epidemic when Joe, her neighbor and friend, died from AIDS. Knowing she was an author, Joe asked her to write about him. "Write that I'm afraid. Not of AIDS, but of humanity". So began the 15 year journey of the author/narrator and her book, God Doesn't Make Trash.
God Doesn't Make Trash isn't about HIV/AIDS itself; it's about the devastating effects of homophobia. It's about people who transcend adversity, who break the emotional barriers of judgement, labels and exclusion, and evolve to a place of spirituality. The stories follow a writer's personal journey with men and women of all races and sexuality who have AIDS, a journey that reveals the extent of homophobia in contemporary American life. From Ward 86 of San Francisco General Hospital in the 1980's to the San Francisco AIDS Walk of 1999, these oral histories provide moving accounts of what it was like to live and die from AIDS in the early 1980's, when AIDS was known as the "gay disease", and what it is like now, in the millennium, for the second generation of AIDS patients. The men and women in this book are young and old, mothers and grandmothers, make-up artists and educators. Their stories have put a human face to AIDS. They have learned lessons we all should learn, and they shared their knowledge and insights with the narrator. Woven through the interviews is the narrator's own story during this period of time and how her experiences with AIDS and homophobia have changed her life. When unable to interest a publisher in her book in the 1980's she has to shelve it. In the 1990's, finding homophobia still rampant, she interviews the second generation of AIDS patients, and when once again unable to find a publisher, decides to publish the book herself. She will keep her promise to give voice to those who gave her their stories years ago and who have now died, and to those suffering from HIV/AIDS today.
Proceeds from the sale of the book to go to Shanti and UCSF AIDS Project
Customer Reviews:
this book is NOT about AIDS, it's about humanity.......2004-07-18
this book is NOT about AIDS, it's about humanity. I was very
interested in the story of the heterosexual San Francisco reporter who found herself in the middle of the early eighties holocaust. This book reads like a novel and a social history. A book worth reading.
Moving memories.......2004-07-16
This is an honest and sincere memoir of one heterosexual woman's spiritual growth through her experience in knowing these early victims of this devastating illness. Ms. Brooker has the gift of intimately telling her story as if she were sitting directly across from you. I, too, witnessed the loss of some remarkable souls to this illness and I always recommend this work to others whether they have been affected or not. Good read.
a moment of history.......2004-07-06
"God Doesnt Make Trash" is a masterpiece. It isn't just about AIDS, it's about humanity, about a heterosexual woman who finds herself in the middle of the AIDS holocaust and records the truth. I think I'd like to see this book in a film. It's like Philadelophia Story with a fresh approach.
Bill Bowker-SF
A pioneering work........2001-07-02
The skill with which Ms. Brooker weaves together the stories of the AIDS patients she is following with the growth of her own awarenesses and her own personal story is remarkable, and what makes this such a compelling read.
An Absolute Must Read.......2001-01-11
I have never read a first chapter of a book that so moved me as this one did, about the author's friend who was the first person she knew who died of AIDS. After reading it I felt I knew this man, and I truly mourned his death, even though I never met him and he died over 15 years ago. That's how powerful a writer the author is. With every chapter, she uses the words of the person she is interviewing along with her own thoughts and feelings to tell their story. She writes with love and the artistry of a poet. This is a wonderful, moving, beautifully written book. I only wish this will be read beyond the gay/AIDS community. I only wish everyone in America would read this book, to see the suffering that ignorance and fear has created in far too many lives.
