Book Description
The importance of yeasts in the biotechnology industry has progressed well beyond baking and brewing. Yeasts are now the organisms of choice for the incorporation of mammalian genes for expressing proteins and other products which were previously obtained from animals. Some yeasts, due to
their potential to cause intractable diseases, also have medical significance. Yeast provides clear descriptions of the methods used in current research. Written by scientists of great experience, this book provides an important compendium of methods for established researchers. It will also
benefit workers new to the field.

In the Dying of the Light.......2007-05-09
Man did not rise to the stars on the shoulders of men who came before. He rose to the stars on the shoulders of giants who came before, leaving a network of jump gates to all the known worlds. He rose on the blood and sweat of aliens he conquered and forced onto reservations. He rose on the technology stolen from the alien race the Vau. He rose on the sweat of the serfs after the fall of the Second Republic and the churches declarations of the evil of technology. Man built republics, and empires and tyrannical mega corporations. He built a church to carry himself into a new era of progress, and then a new dark age. He create art and nobility and enslavement and cruelty and beauty and peace and war and murder.
And then the stars began to die.
Fading Suns in a role playing game set in 4999 A.D. in an empire built on the crumbled remains of a great republic. It is a game of nobility and seeking and discovery. It is also a game of hatred and racism and persecution. It is a game where feudal nobility and the ideal of bygone ages rule an empire built on the jump web of a long dead race.
There are three main forces in contention under the rule of the new Emperor. The five noble houses and various minor houses form the royalty which rules the secular life of the people. The church and it's various sects rules the spiritual life of the people. The great merchant guilds rule the financial life of the people.
Fading suns is a game of disparity. Serf toil in the fields behind oxen while nobles live in air-conditioned castles and travel about the sky in nimble flitters. The Inquisition hunts those who would use technology and puts them to the fire, but an uneasy truce, steeped in martyrdom and the redemption of the common man has arisen to allow the noble house use of high tech gear and craft. The guilds seem to hold onto it only by the strength of their monopoly.
Fading suns in a game of mysticism and the occult. Priests wield magic and psychics harness the powers of the mind. Ancients artifact perform miracles that no science can explain and old technologies are often maintained by rote memory alone.
Emperor Alexius is the first Emperor to actually rule the Empire (the original Emperor was assassinated before he could really rule). He has put forth an decree of discovery and exploration (a religious powder keg just waiting to happen). He has created the office of the questing knight and now the cohort (a knights companion). He is pushing the empire forward, where for years it only slid backwards.
But the suns are fading. Why? No one knows for sure. There is obviously no scientific explanation. There is a religious one, however.
When the Prophet formed the choice, he stated that the holy light was embodied in all the stars. He also stated that the vast stretches of space were filled with demons. It is the churches belief that the stars are the light of the Pancreator, holding back the darkness of the void and the demons therein.
And now the stars are fading. Obviously man is flawed. Obviously, his sins are granting demons powers over the light. It is because of this that technology has been decreed sinful. It is because of this that the Inquisition prowls the Known Worlds in search of sinners and heathens. It's because of this they put them to the flame.
This is the universe of Fading Suns.
Fading Suns has been around for a few years now, but at GenCon this year, they released their second edition. For those of you who just want to know the differences, I'll list them first.
1) It's Hardback. This might not seem like a big change, but I hate softbound core books.
2) A New Jumpweb map. It really looks sharp.
3) New Alustro's Journal (for those of you who think this is the best part of reading the books).
4) Updated history brings the game up to 4999.
5) New character creation method using "Histories" to speed up the creation process.
6) Alexius has opened up the ranks of knighthood to young knights, allowing begining characters to become knights. He has also created the Imperial Cohort, allowing a noble's entourage to carry a certain amount of knightly power.
7) The human/alien characteristic has been removed. Cybernetic now go off Ego.
8) Benefices are no longer used to by starting equipment. You now by the Riches Benefice and use the money to purchase equipment.
9) The new psychic paths: Sympathy and Vis craft. Also some new theurgy.
10) Resolution of damage in combat now uses six sided dice (you can still use the old method is you like).
11) Many weapons from other books have been added to the lists.
12) A list of common wages and costs have been added.
13) Revised cybernetic rules.
14) Starship rules have been added.
15) A treatment of Passion Play Role Playing.
These are the changes between first and second edition. But what if your new to the game? Read on.
Pros
Fading Suns' greatest asset is it's setting. Hands down. This game is set in a rich and interesting universe. Sure it borrows heavily from Frank Herbert, naming the power point trait "wyrd" and simulating dueling methods using shields that only activate when the damage is above a certain level. It comes together well, however. I had as much fun reading the background material on this game as I do reading some novels.
Fading Suns combines the expandable and the unexplainable into a beautiful union. By the time I was done reading the background I wanted to play this game. The universe is compelling on an emotional level. The more I read of it, the more I want to play.
In addition, unlike some games, they are not afraid to put out source material. They are up to about a dozen support books detailing everything from the church to the merchant guilds to alien races. More are coming. Holistic is obviously a company that is knows that the setting sells a system, not the rules.
Cons
First Edition had more cons than second (the lack of ship combat rules, for instance). Second Edition seems to have tried to address these.
The rules are maybe just a touch ligth for my taste. It's not that I really needed more rules, but there are still things I'm not sure I really understand. There are area, like with cybernetic and starship combat, where I really felt a little more explanation would have been helpful. For instance, it makes reference to people withholding victory dice in duels, so that they do less damage to their foes (thus not activating the shield). It never states whether or not there is a mechanic associated with this. I can only assume there isn't, but I would have like a line or two stating that.
Finally, though the game does a good job of making me believe both the mystical and the scientific at the same time, it fails to integrate them some time. I'm willing to accept that their our demons in the void (they might be a super advanced race, or something unexplainable). I'm willing to except all the stars are fading. I'm willing to accept psychic phenomena and even theurgy.
The problem arises in casual references to tech which don't have any scientific basis. I could give them the radar with a range of 5 AU's (the implications of such a powerful radar system are lost on most people). Most everyone, however, knows that there is not oxygen in space. The explanation of the heat blaster as "super hot flame" was a little too much for me. Maybe Noble Armada explains it as plasma. I'll have to pick up a copy.
Conclusion
This is the perfect game for a group where the gamemaster and players disagree about whether to play science fiction or fantasy. It has all the tropes of the fantasy game (magic, noble houses, a great empire, unexplainable evils, questing knights, etc.) in a science fiction universe where technology is unobtrusive. If you've ever had problems with a game where technology quickly gets in the way of the story, this is the game for you.
An Excellent Dark SF Roleplaying Game.......1998-01-21
This game is one of the best new SF Roleplaying Games in existence today. Written by Bill Bridges and Andrew Greenberg (ex White Wolf developers for Vampire, Mage, and Werewolf), this game is a fantastically broad setting, with elements of Dune, Babylon 5, Call of Cthulhu and Cyberpunk.
A great sci-fi/sci-fantasy RPG by proven game authors........1997-09-27
Fading Suns is a great sci-fi RPG with many elements of science fantasy. With an almost medieval culture in a star spanning setting, Fading Suns features a well developed world and history cycle. If you like RPG's and sci-fi, this is the game for you.

Customer Reviews:
Fantastic roleplaying, top notch ideas........2006-08-30
After buying and playing through the d20 version of the game, I decided to take a look at Hollistic's own Victory Point System. While a few of the rules are a bit muddled, over all it's easy to learn, and much like its author's "older children," the custom character building is fun and more personalized than the d20 system. I'll give the story/setting 5 stars for being a beautiful synthesis of Dune, the Phoenix Guard, and many many of my favorite books and movies, but 4 stars for the system which, much like with the author's previous works, is unclear at times, though ultimately great once you've learned it.
Not too Shabby.......2000-05-04
I considered buying this book for quite some time and finally decided to give it a chance. Now I'm glad I picked it up.
The concept behind the game is great and the designers give you enough background information to get started on a campaign of your own. While I haven't had a chance to run a game yet, the mechanics seem decent enough, they even have multiple methods of character generation. With such a wide open universe of over 40 worlds, it is unlikely that you'll fall short of adventure Ideas.
The book has a good format, easy reading and pretty nifty art too. However, the creators of the game are also the original developers of White Wolf's Vampire and Werewolf games, so prepare yourself for a healthy dose of angst ridden melodrama. Whatever your playing style, whether it be the afore-mentioned melodrama or an intense high action thrill game, Fading Suns offers a lil' something for everyone. Well worth the price.

A Wonderful Story.......2005-05-07
I read this book in order to prepare myself to transcribe for Mrs. Miller's upcoming novel, and I found it to be a lovely true story that encompasses World War II, but more so, the forever changed lives of those who lived it. Easy to read and easier to connect with, this story brings to us not only the war but our vital human connection with those around us and around the world, the importance of peace and understanding, and a lesson on the fallible nature of stereotyping our "enemies". I look forward to Mrs. Marako Miller's coming novel, which I expect to be even better.
Mariko alive and well and writing her own book!.......2004-05-27
I attended Mariko Miller's lectures about her family and just had to have the book. For those who want to know major events since, Mr. Terasaki was the liaison after WWII between Emperor Hirohito and MacArthur. He was "writing" a book during this period, but when Mariko got it translated from the court Japanese to the more common dialect, it proved to be much more valuable. Publicly Emperor Hirohito said very little about WWII. He dictated his thoughts on it to Terasaki instead. Terasaki's book proved to be an invaluable historical document. Mariko lives in Wyoming and is writing her own book. She mentioned in her lectures how easy it was to figure out where her parents were on a given day and time in the days leading up to WWII. She just requested their FBI files and it was all there. Keep an eye out for Mariko Miller's book. It should be even better than BRIDGE TO THE SUN.
Great historical piece, OK as literature.......2002-12-30
As literature, this book is not the best. However, as a historical first-hand document that recounts a personal, interesting, and very unique story, this is superb. This book may not read easily for some since the writing style can be a little scattered. This characteristic, though, reveals a rawness in the writing. Terasaki is genuine, and she opens a window to many intriguing subjects. These subjects include: foreign policy between Japan and America surrounding World War II, cultural contrasts between the two countries, perspectives on love, the life of ambassadors in the WWII era, Japanese perspectives on Americans in that era (and vice-versa), the treatment of the different classes of people in Japan, separation of civilians and government, Japanese WWII propaganda strategies, Japanese military actions in China before the US entered the war, Japanese perspectives on the American occupation after the surrender, and so much more. This text contains plenty of substance, even if not in a most polished form. I would recommend borrowing a copy through your local library rather than paying $$ for it.
Movie Video.......2002-02-25
Ever since my June 12, 1999, comments on "Bridge To The Sun, I've received many personal e-mails requesting a copy of my movie video. Please do not ask me to violate copyright laws. Do as I did...keep checking your local cable listings or inquire of the classic movie channels when "Bridge To The Sun" will air again, and then set your VCRs accordingly.
Very Insightful Account of Japan and the Japanese.......2001-06-13
Having lived in the modern Japan for 10+ years, I was impressed by how beautifully Mrs. Terasaki captured the spirit of Japan, and somewhat jealous that she experienced things (I don't mean the war, mind you) difficult to find today. This is a great book, and my only complaint is that she didn't write more.
Incidentally, I actually found out about this book from a Japanese mini-series that was re-broadcast recently called "Mariko". It had a few more details not found in the book, such as the fact that Mr. Terasaki used phrases regarding Mariko (esp. "Mariko is not well today") as a code with his brother and others in Tokyo to relay how discussions were progressing during the tense time right before the Pearl Harbor attack. Also, I found out that Mariko is alive and well and living in the US.

Ilich Ramirez Sanchez once called himself a "professional revolutionary." During a career in international terrorism lasting more than two decades, Sanchez--better known as Carlos the Jackal--murdered 83 people by his own count, once held several dozen oil ministers hostage during an OPEC meeting, and "freelanced" for, among others, Muammar al-Qaddafi, Saddam Hussein, Fidel Castro, and the Italian Red Brigade. Before his eventual capture in 1994 and subsequent trial and imprisonment in France, the Jackal's reputation as a "terrorist's terrorist" was unsurpassed. Dozens of hijackings, bombings, and assassinations were blamed on him, whether or not he was involved (which led him to stand before a French court and accuse everyone within view of libel).
From his fervent Communist upbringing in Venezuela, Carlos was set upon the revolutionary path at an early age. He was allegedly given training in guerilla warfare in Cuba while still a teenager, and soon thereafter studied in the Soviet Union. Jackal breathlessly follows Sanchez's rapid rise up the world's ladder of professional brigands and cutthroats and his international playboy lifestyle, but seldom reveals a private side to the man--perhaps, one guesses, because Carlos the Jackal never had the time or inclination to cultivate one. Follain attempts to make an icon of Carlos ("I will stay inside jail forever or I will be shot dead if I get out," he mused to a reporter while imprisoned in France) in a valiant effort to lend a moral hook to his story, but, as he finally admits, "revolution for Carlos meant a state of mindless euphoria, chasing after women, and luxurious living." --Tjames Madison
Book Description
Carlos the Jackal is a name synonymous with terrorism. He was the most feared, the most wanted, the most notorious terrorist of our time. For more than two decades he carried out missions intended to create a climate of fear in the West, further the politcal goals of the PLO, and set free Arab prisoners held in Israeli and Western prisons, culminating in the famous kidnapping of eleven OPEC ministers in Vienna. For almost twenty years, Carlos remained operative and at large until his capture in 1994. Jackal is the full story of the world's most notorious terrorist.
Customer Reviews:
A Massive Page Turner. .......2006-10-30
I really enjoyed this book even though the subject of its study is deplorable. Carlos the Jackal's story is not his alone. It tells of an era in which governments gritted their teeth and negotiated with terrorists despite official pronouncements to never cave in to their demands. Countries like France, and even East Germany, believed that by giving in to evil revolutionaries like those of the Carlos Group, they could buy their own safety and security. They failed to learn the important lessons of Munich; appeasement never works. As a man, Carlos was an adventurer, a philanderer, a spoiled gourmet, and a raconteur. He also seemed to have little political understanding of the causes he served, and regarded them only as a means to an end. Unlike the fundamentalist terrorists of our day, he fought to increase his own status and power which translated into his obtaining more women and luxuries at each step on his way up the status hierarchy. Somewhat surprisingly, the reader may find that it is difficult to summon up the requisite hatred for him as he really was more Goring than Hitler. Carlos could be bought for the right price and often he was. His brand of terrorism is now defunct which, when one compares his corruption to the absolute devotion of his peers, may not be such a good thing; although, it is nice to know that at least one of these villains will spend his life behind bars.
Carlos the Jackal: The Infamous Terrorist .......2005-12-07
Twenty years ago Carlos was widely blamed/implicated for incidents ranging from the 1972 Munich Olympic Massacre of Israeli athletes to bombings throughout France. Back in the 70s -80s Carlos the Jackal became synonomus during the so-called Red-terror campaign by left wing groups in addition to his connections with Palestinian terror groups.
Follain does a good job describing the Marxist upbringing of the young Illych Sanchez Ramierez (the Jackal's real name), his attendence of the KGB guerilla training school in Moscow (he was later kicked out), to the Jackal's affiliation with groups such as the PFLP and the RAF (Baader-Meinhoff Group). Follain describes how the devout Marxist was actually a playboy (he waited to pose for camera men after the 1975 OPEC takeover) and would kill for his own motives (such as French train bombings because his wife was arrested by French authorities).
This is a very succesful attempt at an in-depth analysis of the once illusive Jackal. I would definatley recommend it for those interested.
Poor.......2005-08-19
John Follain cannot decide if he wants to be dramatic or expository. So he aims for both - in miserable spurts that completely fog the history of this madman and of modern terrorism itself. Rarely are the Jackal's motivation and vision clear. Even muddier is the larger story of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the U.S.' growing intervention in Mideast politics and the backlash therein. I knew close to nothing about these issues going into the book and I still don't. I confess I gave up half-way through when I could no longer kid myself into thinking this clumsy book was a serious work of non-fiction.
I like it, but..........2001-10-16
Good, good info on Carlos and his Venezuelan roots (I should know, I'm from Venezuela) and a detailed (and sometimes breathtaking) account of his most spectacular actions and capture. But, not being a native speaker, I have a problem with Follain's grammar. I mean, it's sometimes sloppy. I don't know, still and all good book.
Interesting account of an unlikely terrorist........1999-09-24
Among self-described "professional" revolutionaries, few cut a more fascinating figure than Ilich Ramirez Sanchez, a k a Carlos the Jackal. Before he was captured in 1994 and subsequently tried and sentenced to life in prison in France, the Jackal, a terrorist-for-hire whose higher-profile clients included Muammar al-Qaddafi, Saddam Hussein and Fidel Castro claimed to have nixed 83 people; dozens of hijackings, bombings and assassinations were blamed on him following his association, around 1970, with the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine. And yet, slovenly, feckless, girl-chasing and politically disoriented Carlos, however murderous, is almost too laughable to picture as a terrorist mastermind. Reuters man Follain does a nice job here of tracing, if not demystifying, Carlos' life of crime, from his guerilla training in Cuba as a teen to the bitter, pathetic and at times hilarious end. (When moved between prisons, he made sure to notify the subscription department of Cigar Lover magazine of his change of address.)
