5 out of 5 stars Glorious Genus of Lilies.......2000-06-17

I really don't see why this book should be out of print ! It's an a-z of one of the most interesting plant families there is. Along with the historical and botanical description of the lilies and related families come beautiful colour prints of the plants mentioned. These were instrumental in hooking me onto the worship of these beautiful plants. To this day, I dream of going to Japan to find a wild specimen of L. brownii..all because of this book! So start up the printing machines, please!

1 out of 5 stars not accurate in the restaurant category.......1999-08-13

It seemed to happen all too frequently - restaurants listed were no longer in business or had moved to a different location. In one evening, four of the five restaurants I tried were closed, and in some cases, had been closed quite a while.

this was a big disappointment as most other Access guides have been great

Do not buy this book! The inaccurate maps will drive you crazy! Maybe if you already knew Philadelphia, it'd be okay. But then, you wouldn't really need the book. Letters to the publisher have gone unanswered. I'd seriously consider never buying another Access Guide on the basis of this one.

        1 out of 5 stars Maps don't match text!.......2000-11-21

If you're unfamiliar with the Access Guide series, the text and maps are keyed to each other by numbers. However, the maps printed in our copy of the 4th edition are unchanged from our copy of the 3rd edition, while the numbers in the text have changed as entries were added and deleted. As a consequence, the numbers on the maps often bear no relation to the numbers in the text, making the book less useful. Try to find the third edition -- not that much changed in the fourth edition -- or wait a few years for the fifth edition. It's a shame, the Access Guides are generally among the most useful for the casual tourist. Don't try looking at the URL given on the back cover of the 4th edition for corrections -- that web site has no content. E-mail to the publisher has not elicited an acknowledgement of the problem after ten days.

                      Book Description

Perhaps no American president has seemed less suited to his office or his times than Calvin Coolidge. The taciturn New Englander became a vice presidential candidate by chance, then with the death of Warren G. Harding was thrust into the White House to preside dourly over the Roaring Twenties.

Robert Ferrell, one of America's most distinguished historians, offers the first book-length account of the Coolidge presidency in thirty years, drawing on the recently opened papers of White House physician Joel T. Boone to provide a more personal appraisal of the thirtieth president than has previously been possible. Ferrell shows Coolidge to have been a hard-working, sensitive individual who was a canny politician and an astute judge of people. He reveals how after being dubbed the "odd little man from Vermont" by the press, Coolidge cultivated that image in order to win the 1924 election.

Ferrell's analysis of the Coolidge years shows how the president represented the essence of 1920s Republicanism. A believer in laissez-faire economics and the separation of powers, he was committed to small government, and he and his predecessors reduced the national debt by a third. More a manager than a leader, he coped successfully with the Teapot Dome scandal and crises in Mexico, Nicaragua, and China, but ignored an overheating economy. Ferrell makes a persuasive case for not blaming Coolidge for the failures of his party's foreign policy; he does maintain that the president should have warned Wall Street about the dangers of overspeculating but lacked sufficient knowledge of economics to do so.

Drawing on the most recent literature on the Coolidge era, Ferrell has constructed a meticulous and highly readable account of the president's domestic and foreign policy. His book illuminates this pre-Depression administration for historians and reveals to general readers a president who was stern in temperament and dedicated to public service.

This book is part of the American Presidency Series.

2 out of 5 stars Cal's Rolling in his grave over this one.......1999-08-29

This is an awful book for two primary reasons: 1. It portrays Coolidge in the unfair, stereotypical light that people have done for decades. (thus it lacks any new thought) 2. The book, mechanically speaking, is also poor. It is difficult to read, dry, and gives the reader no incentive to continue reading. The only reason I gave Ferrell a second star is because he is smart enough to pick a good topic to write his book about.

4 out of 5 stars An objective and well researched account........1998-06-05

The thirty-second volume in the acclaimed American Presidency Series presents a complex man and his struggles to solidify the economy and use cautious diplomacy in foreign affairs. Contrary to popular opinion, Robert Ferrell argues that Calvin Coolidge worked vigorously to achieve successful legislation and his dedication to public service provided him with a good background for the presidency from 1923 to 1929. The author, however, does recognize that Coolidge sometimes waited out troubles, acted indecisively, and displayed inactivity in foreign relations. For example, Ferrell avers that the president and his ministers incompetently handled political problems in Nicaragua and economic instability in Mexico. Also, the author acknowledges that Coolidge did not grasp the economic currents of his time.

Ferrell raises the question in this study: "Why did Coolidge not do more to deal with economic matters and consult with his advisors?" Perhaps the author answers this question in mentioning the Federal Reserve's reluctance to intervene in monetary policy and stock market speculation. In addition, Ferrell analyzes Coolidge's political philosophy on two counts: his opposition to governmental paternalism and belief in laissez-faire economy. In fact, Ferrell writes that Coolidge cut income taxes drastically; by 1927, 98 percent of the population paid no income tax.

The Presidency of Calvin Coolidge judges the president in an objective manner and uses extensively researched primary and secondary sources. The author, however, does tend to use quotes excessively and this may irritate some readers. Besides, Ferrell gives a vivid account about society in the 1920s, but his information about automobiles appears repetitive at times in this book. Furthermore, Ferrell suggests that to blame Coolidge for lack of foresight in not preventing the holocausts of our time seems unhistorical. Yet, a historian does indeed judge people and historical events both diachronically and synchronically. Overall, Fer! rell admirably addresses Coolidge's strengths and weaknesses in an analytical framework. Finally, the photographs add a realistic vision about Coolidge and his times.

                              Book Description

A few brave souls in the public eye, such as Patty Duke, Kay Redfield Jamieson, and more recently, Margot Kidder, have come forward to reveal something about themselves that they had tried very hard to keep hidden -- the fact that they suffer from a mental illness called "manic depression". Also known as "bipolar disorder", this illness is only dimly understood by the population at large and, unfortunately, misconceptions abound.

In this compelling autobiography, Bill Hannon offers an engrossing first-hand account of living with a serious mental illness and the disturbing delusions and paranoias which rendered him incapable of holding a job or accepting help from his friends and family. From his earliest manic episode during a high school trip abroad to his struggles with mis-diagnoses and the frightening side-effects of prescribed drugs, Hannon guides the reader into a world in which crossword puzzles are coded messages from the C.I.A. and a scrap of masking tape on a car windshield means that his conversations are being monitored.

Never before has an author described his own manic episodes in such fascinating and insightful detail as Hannon does in Agents in My Brain. It is this feature that sets the book apart from all other accounts of manic depression. Agents in My Brain is essential reading for anyone who has encountered manic depression on either a first-or second-hand basis.

"A vivid and often poignant portrayal of what it is like to grapple with the realities of manic depressive disorder". -- Timothy Twito, M.D.

"Agents in My Brain is an outstanding piece of work. I am manic-depressive myself, and Bill Hannon's book really tells it like it is". -- M.A.L.

4 out of 5 stars a severe look at bipolar disorder.......2003-03-10

This book provides an interesting first hand account of bipolar I disorder with psychotic features. In other words, the author has the most severe form of the illness. While the writing isn't as good as in the finest mental illness memoirs, like "An Unquiet Mind", the author is still able to vividly communicate the horrors of this illness. I do wish he would have been a little more constructive in his criticisms of psychiatry, as perhaps some readers will get the impression that this is not a very treatable illness, when in fact it is. I do, however, agree that it does often take many years before a bipolar individual is properly diagnosed. Overall, a good book that should be read by anyone interested in bipolar disorder. Avery Z. Conner, author of "Fevers of the Mind".

I have read the reviews of the readers and I was so impressed that I am going to buy this book. My husband is Bipolar and he was first diagnosed with this illness when he was 21 yrs old. He is now 54 years old. We have been married for 24 yrs and it wasn't until 1995 that he was diagnosed as Bipolar. The doctors who treated him in the late '60's said he was paronoid schizophrenia. It is a shame that these people are treated like lepers. Bioplar is an illness like, cancer or any other illness. Why is it hard for others to understand that? His bestfriend since he was 6 yrs old doesn't talk or call him. I will get this book.

I knew nothing about manic depression. This book opened my eyes to a disease that is hard to image for most people. Mr. Hannon brings his feelings and thoughts to his readers and in a very remarkable way, he is able to share his painful daily struggles. I would highly recommend this book to all University psychology classes and in particular to Medical Schools. Mr. Hannon's personal insight could help physicians make an earlier diagnosis and positively impact the lives of others that become afflicted with this disease.

4 out of 5 stars Great insight into manic-depression.......2000-02-06

I have a friend who is bipolar. I'd read "A Mood Apart" a few months ago, which gave me some good information. But Hannon's book provides real insight and understanding for a nonbipolar person about what this condition must be like. The list of symptoms at the back of the book is also very useful in identifying what may seem like eccentricities of M-Ds. This book, along with "A Mood Apart" or "The Unquiet Mind" will take anyone who wishes to understand the topic a long way down that road. If I could have a magic wish in regard to this book, however, it would be for a better style of writing. At times, it reminded me of Kurt Vonnegut's "Breakfast of Champions," but I think that may have been unintentional.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Portrayal of Manic-Depressive Illness!.......2000-01-09

This is a wonderful account of the path of destruction manic-depressive illness can leave in the life of it's victim. I was really moved by Mr. Bill Hannon's story. I feel like I know some of the most intimate details of his life. I also felt a kinship to Bill because I also suffer with Manic-Deppresive Illness and had been mis-diagnosed for many years with schizo-affective and schizophrenia regardless to the obvious history my family had with manic-depressive illness. My daughter has now been diagnosed with Manic-depression and even though I had attempted to convey my family history to the psychiatrist treating her, manic-depression was their last resort diagnosis. They tried ADHD, borderline, and schizoaffective labels on her. When they finally put her on the right dose of Depakote, a sleeping peel, and an anti-depressant, she is now like the daughter I remember before the onset of the disorder. She is now 16, her first episode was manic at 14 years of age.

Bill does a wonderful job of detailing the symptoms that he went through, even though the lousy psychiatrists he had didn't recognize and diagnose them properly. Bill also does a wonderful job showing how important early diagnosis and treatment is to the sufferer even though he didn't have the benefits of it as a result of incompetence, arrogance, and/or complacency.

Finally, I have had a lot of delusion and paranoid thoughts and behaviors with the illness. It really helped to hear the details of what was going on in another manic depressives head. I was afraid to tell my care provider's some things because I didn't want to be misdiagnoses as schizoprenic again. It help to know that the delusions I have while manic are still within the same diagnosis. As Bill says, "Knowledge is Power".

Thanks for sharing Bill. I am so happy you are getting better as am I.
