What do we know of our wild flowers?
Everyone enjoys the spring wood anemones in the Wicklow forests, the long-flowering sea thrift on so many of our rocks, the field scabious lining the roads of the central plain in July. And we know that there is a botanist's treasure trove in the Burren, on the west Clare coast. Sometimes our know ledge goes little further. But when we learn more we find that Ireland is full of wild flowers, many of them rare and beautiful. To understand their special character we must go hack a little in time.
The ice that long ago covered Ireland. Britain and northern Europe is believed to have killed most of the then native flora. When the ice retreated plants from southern Europe started a north ward invasion. At this time both Ireland and Britain were joined to the Continent, but only a fraction of the European flora was able to reach Ireland before our landmass broke away into the Atlantic. Because of this some well-known wild flowers native to Britain have never grown in Ireland. Britain in its turn was soon separated from the Continent and has a less rich flora than continental countries.
Though Irish wild flowers are comparatively few in variety, they are well spread around the country and have not yet been wiped out by high-powered agriculture, or plundered by collectors. Those near the West coast are the more interesting. There the rainy mild climate helps plants to grow luxuriantly in the rocky unshaded fields, and some lovely and unexpected ones have survived far from their normal range. Because of the warm winters of West Cork and Kerry plants thrive there which cannot grow in Britain, and yet we find them again in Spain, Portugal and south-west France. Farther up the coast, in west Clare are large numbers of Arctic-Alpine plants, thriving in the bleak exposure of the Burren, and often growing uncharacteristically down to sea-level. There are even a few North American plants; how these reached Ireland is a mystery.
This booklet selects forty-two plants from the Irish flora. In the first part are flowers to be found all over the country, and I have chosen just a few from each environment or `habitat'. So there are five or six plants from woodlands, the seaside, moors, marshes and fields: where possible their general location has also been given.
In the second part are some of' the plants of special interest, plants which surprise the botanist and grow abundantly in our warm Western climate, the Kerry butterwort and saxifrages, the Clare gentians and mountain avens, the Connemara heather and pipewort. All these can he found easily, can be admired, drawn or photographed but they are rare so should on no account be picked. The Burren plants, like those in Kerry, have a sudden and seemingly miraculous flowering time for three or four weeks from the middle of May. In Connemara July and August are the best months to see the typical heathers and water plants.
Both English and Latin names have been given for the plants. English names are easier to remember but are not always definitely established; yel low pimpernel is sometimes called wood pimpernel for example. Latin names are botanically accurate and necessary for identification.

Very Handy Reference Tool.......2007-09-14
This work is a great summary of the tenures of the Presidents of the United States of America. For each individual there is an opening summary paragraph, biographical facts, portraits, quotes, timelines, election results, important historical events, administration members, and first lady biographies. Having all this information in one place is very handy as a reference tool. Reading through the text can also provide a great overview of American History.

Dull at most of the time. A very subjective and somewhat objective read. I viewed the writing of Carter Smith (or whoever) to be a Republican sided while debasing the achievements of the Democrats. The recordings of the last seven presidents are evident of what I am saying. Even the portrayals of two idiot Bush presidents were spoken favorably while Clinton had the worst treatment of the three. When I think about the achievements during Clinton's administration, I recollect fondly the best period USA had ever had in the last 30 years and probably will never reattain the era of good feelings. Another omission, but admittingly irrelevant, is the listing of Speaker of the House per congress term. Not that I care, I didn't even bother to read the listings of the cabinent members, but it's there anyhow. In the end of the book, the inaugural speeches are included. Again, I didn't bother to read any of it since the dryness of the words have a overpowering wave on me to be lulled to sleep. For what the book intends to do, facts are there but littered with a lot of personal opinions by the author, which I find it disgustingly inappropriate and completely unnecessary. Don't be fooled by the claim that it would answer every question you might have regarding to each president of the nation because it doesn't. A lot of grammatical errors, spelling errors, and misprints throughout the book.

I loved this book. As it teaches us how people with vision problems have to go though. I have worked with the visual handicap and believe me they can do alot of things you think they cant. A big thanks to the author Jennifer Rothschild. Everyone should read this book.
Beyond the Suffering.......2007-07-01
Seeing with spiritual eyes is the premise made, and made remarkably well, by Jennifer Rothschild. Life in a fallen world has a way of blinding us to spiritual light. Rothschild personal testimony and biblical worldview provide the laser surgery we need to see again.

Jennifer Rothchild touches our very souls with her encounters with God and his majesty. We begin to "see" for the first time just how powerful and mighty our Heavenly Father can be to his children. While we listen to her stories dealing with her family and her life as a vibrant mother and lecturer, we often forget she is doing all these wonderful things under the cover of darkness. We forget because there is no darkness in Jennifer's soul. Each chapter, enriched by a personal poem or song, introduces us to the holy love and power of Jesus Christ. Uplifting and encouraging, this book begins a journey for us, and we want to walk alongside this amazing woman for the rest of our days. There is no doubt how much she loves the Lord, and this love enables her to make some wonderful connections to his power and light. Jennifer Rothschild is such an inspiration to many people, and I am one of those people. She is an author, musician, and in full time ministry. In this book she shares lessons that she learned, that we can also learn and benefit from. The amazing thing about the title is that she is blind, so the only light that she sees is God's light.
In starting out she uses God's word to show that he truly is the light. 1John 1:5 says that "God is Light" and Psalms 119:105 "lamp unto my feet, and a light to my path". God truly is light and she shows this in the twelve chapters of her book.
We need to cling to God's word, for it is our Sword of Honor. Scripture tells the story of Eleazar, and how he clung to his sword in the battle, and when it was over he could not let it go (2 Samuel 23:9-10). The Bible is something that we can hold on to today and use it in our battle field. To do this we need to spend time every day in it. When we don't it is an issue of pride. It is like we are telling God that we don't need him. We all have many excuses, but none of them are good enough. We are to cling to the word and use it and to do that we must know it; and to know it we must be read it and study it everyday.
Sometimes we are reluctant. The author says "Most of us feel a tinge of reluctance when it comes to change, because it means we must take a risk and release some of our control." What we need to do is release and trust Jesus. "It is no risk to trust the One who is totally trustworthy." Isaiah 26:4. You may not have the confidence to face the change, but God can give us courage. Confidence is a feeling, and courage is an action. There are three gifts of courage: Power, Love, and Self-Discipline.
Walking by faith and not having any baggage is another way that the author teaches you how to live. There are two tools to get rid of sin: The law (Romans 3:20 and 5:13), and Repentance (John 1:9). God gives us his grace so that we can live with him. His grace is offered because he is good. We are also required to be meek, and that means to "...recognize our own personal power and willingly submit to the authority of another." Meekness is one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22).
Next she shows us how the Bible tells us to pray without ceasing, or in her words "pray like crazy". So even if you do not believe that you can pray, pray anyway. Pray like you would like to be able to pray. It doesn't have to be showy or flashy, God knows what you are trying to express and say. "Just do it." (Nike).
God's word is alive and it gives us hope, cling to this hope. One way to do this is don't be self-conscious, be God-conscious. See yourself in the mirror that is God's word. Words of warning though, you maybe the only God that anyone ever sees, so you need to know him so you can reflect him. Beware though of three places that you might get caught up and those are: pride, performance, and problems. Let God shine through you it is about God not you.
Lastly Mrs. Rothschild reminds us that we are to live like aliens here on earth. This is not our home; it is a staging area, preparing us form home. Heaven is our ultimate home and we need to keep our eyes on that.
This book is an enlightening experience. The author has some new ideas on things that I had never thought of, and it was nice to see things from a different point of view. I am going to take what I learned, and apply it to the many other lessons that God is teaching me every day.
