Book Description
Introduction to Modern Virology has been an established student text for over 25 years. Providing an integrated account of the subject across different host systems, with an emphasis on human and animal viruses, this book covers the field of virology from molecular biology to disease processes using a unique systems approach. Featuring an all new art program in full color, the new edition has been updated throughout, and reorganized into thematic sections on the fundamental nature of viruses, their growth in cells, their interactions with the host organism and their role as agents of human disease. There is a new chapter on Human Viral Disease and rapidly developing areas, such as the use of viruses as gene therapy vectors, have been included. The 6th edition is even more accessible, now including key points and integrative questions in every chapter, as well as text boxes emphasizing take-home messages, evidence underpinning the main concepts, and further information for more advanced readers. Prevention and therapy, evolution and emerging viruses receive particular attention and specific chapters address the major infectious challenges posed by HIV, pandemic influenza and BSE. This highly accessible text provides ideal reading for all undergraduate and postgraduate students of biology and medicine wishing to study virology.
Customer Reviews:
Good Information, Bad Organization.......2006-05-10
Granted virology is not the most organized branch of science, the author could have done a much better job organizing the information. At many times through out this book I felt lost, not because I didn't understand the information (if you've taken molecular bio virology will be a much easier course) but because I couldn't figure out how this example fit into the big picture. Later on after finishing a couple of chapters I had to go back through my notes, rearrange everything, and add notes to my notes.
On the good side, there was a lot of helpful information and background on the experiments used to assertain this information.
All you need to start this fascinating subject.......1999-07-11
Virology is not the easiest of subjects to consider studying so it was with some trepidation that I ordered this book. My confidence was well founded as it is in every way superb. Chapters include definitions of viruses, lab techniques, biochemistry, processes of infection, virus-host interactions, vaccines, evolution of viruses and focus chapters on specific viruss/groups. Every page was fascinating and ,relatively easy to grasp if read in page order (though this is not a book for the complete layman, 'A' level biology or chemistry will be useful if not essential). Did you know that ME is caused by a virus, or that seals can catch human flu, or that at laest two infectious particle SMALLER than viruses exist? Read this book!

Customer Reviews:
Human Communications Disorders.......2007-10-02
This is a well written text that is easy to take notes from. It is very thorough, but it is definitely written with the professional in mind, with many sitings and technical terms.
some good points, some not that great.......2006-09-28
This text book is very comprehensive and updated (particularly regarding the chapters on genetics and multiculturalism). However, as an introductory text, it contains too much information in too many chapters, often on an intermediate level.

Its goal is to provide a solid foundation for students to build upon for the remainder of their professional careers. The text strives to provide students with a clear conception of the structural and functional changes caused by disease in tissues and organs. Introduction to Human Disease, Fourth Edition is organized into two main sections. The first section covers general concepts and diseases that affect the body as a whole. In the second section, individual organ systems and their diseases are discussed in a systematic manner. The heaviest emphasis is placed on the most common and important diseases. Book Description
In recognition of the tremendous variation across children and language, the fifth edition of this readable book devotes much more space to individual developmental differences and cultural differences.
Discussion of other cultures has been included wherever possible. In addition, the sections on bidialectalism and bilingualism have been expanded to reflect more accurately the realities of everyday life in the United States. Developed within a chronological framework, every aspect of syntax, morphology, semantics, phonology, and pragmatics is examined.
For anyone interested in language development.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to Understand.......2007-02-13
This book gives comprehensive detail on how language is normally developed. Its very easy to understand
Good info, hard read.......2007-01-04
This book is chock-full of vital information on the subject. The issue is that it is not an easy read. The words are small and it seems as if the info just goes on and on and on with no page breaks or chapter reviews often. But because of the good content, I've decided to keep the book instead of selling it back.
Too much information.......1999-07-22
This book is packed with an incredible amount of information on language development making it a good resource. However, this incredible detail is confusing for students taking their first course in language development.

Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-09-17
I have a profesor who doesn't know the first thing about teaching. The only way I am surviving is by keeping up with this book. It is so clear. The only issue I have with it is that it doesn't always define the bolded key terms until a couple pages later.
It's what the title says..........2007-05-10
It's an introduction to audiology. If you're new to the discipline, then this is a pretty good starting point. However, it's not detailed enough for postgrad or research. For that I'd buy Katz's Handbook of Clinical Audiology or Roeser's Audiology Diagnosis.
GREAT.......2006-02-22
My order got here on the day specified when I ordered it. It was packaged great and everything was there that was supposed to be. SPEEDY and reliable.
Introduction to audiology.......2006-02-08
I just want to say that this text book is really easy to understand as well as to read. If some kind of uncertainty arises you can always refer to the CD that it comes with and it will help you understand the material in a more efficient and concrete way. I am happy with the text and I can now understand the science behind the hearing mechanism. I would recommend this text for the begginers with an interest to specialize in hearing and/or speech sciences.
A great start..............2002-02-21
I have a BS in Audiology and am going back for my Au.D -- and this book is excellent in bringing me back up to speed on the materials I haven't touched in nearly 10 years. It is concise (definitely not wordy) and hits all the basics, starting from the history of hearing checks to today's detailed technological miracles of testing. Could have a bit more of the anatomy, but other than that, it really is a great start for those wanting to enter the field of Audiology.

Book Description
Introduction to Biochemical Toxicology
Third Edition
Over the past several decades, biochemical toxicology has contributed greatly to the advancement of scientific disciplines ranging from medicine and pharmacology to environmental science and industrial hygiene. In its never-ending quest to define the biochemical, cellular, and molecular events occurring when toxicants interact with organisms, biochemical toxicology provides the rational basis for, among other things, our understanding of acute and chronic toxic processes, the development of new therapies, the determination of toxic hazards, and the development of medical and agricultural biocides.
Recent applications of new molecular and cellular techniques have greatly expanded our knowledge of how toxicants produce their adverse effects. As a consequence, the time has come for a substantial revision of Professor Ernest Hodgson's classic reference in the field. This Third Edition now contains updated overview chapters on immunochemical and molecular techniques. It also features entirely new chapters covering such crucial topics as immunotoxicology, cutaneous toxicology, reproductive and developmental toxicology, and molecular epidemiology.

Book Description
Identity theft, criminal investigations of the dead or missing, mass disasters both by natural causes and by criminal intent - with this as our day to day reality, the establishment and verification of human identity has never been more important or more prominent in our society. Maintaining and protecting the integrity of out identity has reached levels of unprecedented importance and has led to international legislation to protect our human rights. Forensic Human Identification: An Introduction examines the variety of biological indicators that are available to investigators and illustrates the basic principles of each discipline. While DNA and fingerprints are clearly the favored methods of identification, they require a prior record and verifiable baseline for comparison. When these tools cannot be used it is necessary to employ those biological factors with higher variation and lower diagnostic probability. This reference introduces a number of different specialties such as, foot- and earprinting, dental interventions, skeletal anomalies, tattoos, facial reconstruction, personal effects, and handwriting. While recognizing that no single factor is an absolute indicator of identity, the contributors explain how a multitude of factors taken into summative consideration can establish a probability for confirmation. They discuss the difference between positive and probable identification and the use of exclusion to confirm identity. Using three high profile case studies, the book addresses the context of human identification in today's society and illustrates the use of techniques described in the text. Heavily referenced and using more than 120 charts, figures, photographs, and tables, Forensic Human Identification: An Introduction provides detailed introductory and extended information to newcomers and experts alike on the wide range of identification techniques in international practice.
