5 out of 5 stars Wonderful advice! Perfect for a busy woman!.......2007-04-06

Short, spicy, and fun to read! Not too long- bullet pointed tips are helpful as they are easy to see, and tips are very concise. Bond inspires me to get on the road, and reminds me to continue to listen to my inner voice! Can't wait for my next traveling experience!

5 out of 5 stars Useful Tips at your Fingertips.......2003-03-16

While this book contains plenty of travel advice that I already know, it is quite handy for acting as a reminder to things I may forget along the way. The bulleted lists are helpful. I don't have to search paragraph after paragraph to find something I want to know. Armed with this book, I shall fearlessly begin my pan-Pacific adventure!

    5 out of 5 stars A ValuableTool.......2002-11-08

The author has written a book packed so full of valuable information and wisdom that every woman who travels anywhere should read it over and over again. Many of the tips are just as valid when applied to domestic travel as to travel in foreign lands.

Some of the topics are safety and security (TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS is her mantra), women traveling together, health and hygiene, keeping in touch, bargaining, tipping, packing.

I especially appreciated these tips:when to purchase plane tickets (Wednesdays) and when not to do so (Saturdays); to carry a combination lock -- you never know when it might come in handy; always carry enough money in your shoe to get you out of a tight spot----these are things I probably could have thought of but hadn't.

Bond leads the traveler-to-be through all she should do to adequately prepare: reading guidebooks, making an itinerary (and leaving a copy of it at home with family and friends), getting information from other travelers, doing research, learning a few words in the language of the countries you are visiting, and making checklists.

This book is wonderfully organized and is a MUST for every woman who wants to travel and feel both safe and well-prepared.

2 out of 5 stars Good, but better books exist.......2002-08-19

This book is a nice place for women travelers to start, but the book Travel Tips for the Sophisticated Woman by Lara Vestanen has far more depth and really useful tips.

5 out of 5 stars Thanks for another great book........2001-05-03

Marybeth Bond is one of my favorite travel writers. Whether she is compiling stories about women's travel: "A Woman's Passion for Travel," "A Woman's World" or "A Mother's World" or providing us with sound travel advise through the Gutsy Women's series, Marybeth is a source of sound advice, untempered passion for adventure and an umitigated belief in the strength of women. Read her books and you will be inspired, touched and ready for adventure.

2 out of 5 stars Lacking in Practical Advice.......2007-02-23

If you are looking for inspiration or motivation to travel with your child(ren) (or maybe just encouragement that it can be done), then this is the book for you. If you are looking for practical advice, as I was, this is definitely NOT the book for you. I flipped through the entire book in 10 minutes, turned to my husband and said, "Well, that was a waste of $8."

1 out of 5 stars Tiny book, stating the obvious.......2007-02-10

This book's cover features a camel caravan, an African woman with a child on her head, people white water rafting -- pictures that suggest this book is about adventure travel, consistent with the name of the book. But inside, it offers such obvious advice as, "when travelling with an infant or toddler, pack enough diapers, the child's favorite toy, and a pacifier." Or, "involve older children in the planning." Or, "on a car trip, pack tapes of children's songs." Really, what mother hasn't thought of all these things already? And these examples aren't just the most extremely banal. They're representative of the whole tone of the book.

The chapter at the end suggesting family vacations suggests road trips with an RV, Club Med family vacations, resorts, water vacations, camping, theme parks (and it actually gives advice like "if you can, avoid visits on weekends or school holidays" -- well, duh!), family camps, dude ranches, family cruises, eco-travel and nature trips (this suggestion includes no advice at all, in contrast to visiting a theme park which contains a list of five tips), river rafting, bike trips (again, no advice), and international travel (and here the author recommends using a full-blown tour package). If the travel industry marketing association were to write a book, this would be it. There is almost no advice on how to really travel with children that a parent who had ventured beyond a visit to Grandma's wouldn't already have thought of. Really, what mother needs to be told to bring diapers for her infant?

This book might be useful for someone who has, truly, never traveled at all. Ever. But for people with any travel experience, it's utterly useless. This might help those who are complete novices and want a tame vacation. And that's fine. These people deserve a good book. I have no problem with providing such a service. But the title and the cover are completely misleading, and the tone of the book makes it sound as if this advice will get you and your family happily through a six-week overland trek through India. It's just not going to happen. Being told (in the infant and toddler chapter no less) to bring baby wipes because they're handy for cleaning up spills just isn't enough.

If you want a good book on traveling with children, I suggest "Adventuring With Children: An Inspirational Guide to World Travel and the Outdoors" by Nan Jeffrey. Nan, her husband, their twin sons, and daughter have really traveled, and their advice goes well beyond the obvious. It's an excellent book for Mamas who really are Gutsy. But the "Gutsy Mamas" book is appropriate for those seeking a cruise or a trip to Disneyland or to sit passively in an RV in a four-mile long line of RVs snaking slowly through the Grand Canyon. Obviously millions of people choose that route. But I don't think it's at all gutsy, and even for those people, I can't imagine that this book will teach them much that they don't already know.

4 out of 5 stars great resource for your pack list.......2003-08-25

I used two books this one and lonely planets traveling with kids guide. Between the two and the Lonley Planet India guidebook I feel very prepared. I really love the quoted ideas from all kinds of other -traveled with kids- experienced moms. Very helpful and supportive. I leave next week for a month. So we'll see how valuable the 50 things I never would have thought of are. But I can tell you that I feel prepared now and I have gotten from the book what I had hoped for: a comprehensive list of ideas and experiences which enables me to feel prepared to go to India with my 3 and 5 yr old.

5 out of 5 stars Packed with valuable travel information for mothers........1998-06-11

This is the best travel book I have ever read for mothers who travel with their children. The chapters are short, to-the-point, and easy to read. The book is inspirational and informative.

      Book Description

He is commemorated throughout the world in museums and statuary, on street signs and in gift shops; even more prominently, Winston Churchill's monumental presence persists in shelves upon shelves of biographies and histories, dozens of which were written by Churchill himself and have been international bestsellers. While political figures are routinely the objects of intense posthumous scrutiny, few have achieved such pervasive and ongoing influence, and fewer still have so adeptly orchestrated their own place in history. Man of the Century is the often surprising story of how Winston Churchill, in the last years of his life, carefully crafted his reputation for posterity, and it reveals him as the twentieth century's pioneering, and perhaps most gifted, "spin doctor." It is also a far-ranging account not only of Churchill's continuing impact on British, American, and European politics, but also of the powerful legacy of his vision of a common destiny and heritage for English-speaking peoples around the world.

In the first book to examine the full scope of Churchill's postwar influence, John Ramsden draws on fresh material and extensive research from three continents to argue that the statesman's force of personality and romantic, imperial notion of Britain have contributed directly to many political events of the last several decades -- including American involvement in Vietnam and the role of the Anglo-American alliance in promoting and protecting a certain vision of world order. Man of the Century captures the complexities of Churchill's story and political legacy as well as the spirit and irreverent power of the statesman who became a modern legend.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Mold History through the Sheer Force of Your Personality.......2006-07-17

John Ramsden wrote a book of uneven quality about Winston Churchill's legend since 1945. Ramsden clearly does not target readers with no prior, in-depth knowledge of this towering presence. In some chapters, Ramsden gets bogged down in detail that, over time, annoys readers. Ramsden should have written shorter chapters about Churchill and his relationship with countries such as Australia and New Zealand. Enumerating a large number of streets, pubs, parks, etc. named after Churchill in these different countries does not add much to the narrative. Ramsden is at his best in Part One when he focuses on the controversial personality of Churchill. Churchill understood very well that he had to write his side of the story to mold the minds of his contemporaries and remain relevant to future generations. Churchill has outshined most other memorable men and women in this enterprise. Many people around the world still want to claim a piece of Churchill by quoting him in a wide variety of settings. The ultimate power of Churchill lies in the richness of his parley and writings which can still stir emotions when reason fails to mobilize for decisive action.

4 out of 5 stars Time was Wrong.......2005-07-13

Notwithstanding Time magazine's famous judgement, I think Winston Churchill was the man of the last century. So does John Ramsden, who has written a book that will be deeply appreciated by those with a lively interest in Churchill's impact on politics and culture following World War II and up to the present. The text is somewhat uneven in that the author meanders between quite keen insights on important issues, such as Churchill's role toward what became the EU, and the more dubious, such as listing the various streets named for the great man in Australia. While a first time reader on Churchill should read a good biography like that of Sir Roy Jenkins, this book will be worthy of purchase by any true acolyte of this great, and still relevant, figure of history.

5 out of 5 stars A new way to look at Winston.......2005-03-16

THis is not a biography of Winston Churchill. This is something new and fascinating. Here we have a text that seeks to examine Churchill the legend, the man, the history of him and his relationship with the english speaking world since 1945. Chapters include investigations of Churchills funeral, 'operation Hope Not' and Churchill 'failure' to lose World War Two, the Finest Hour. Here we learn of Churchill's FUlton speech and also his famous relationship with America, as an honorary citizen no less.

Most interesting are chapters on Churchills relationship with Australia and Canada as well as new anecdotes about why Castro and Guliani, who agree on nothing, both are admirers of Winston. This book also examines the many biographers of Churchill, including Manchester, Gilbert and Jenkins.

THe conlusion is that Churchill is not simply the 'man of the century' but perhaps of the next one as well. This is a tour de force and every Churchill admirer must read it, in fact anyone interested in histiography or in the western egnlish speaking world since 1945 will enjoy this. Every conceivable person stars in this cast, from Isiah Berlin to Dean Acheson and Robert Menzies. The English speaking world will enjoy this book about one of its greatest champions.

A last note, the chapter on Churchill and Europe and Churchill and the Irish are extraordinary in their new takes on the British and their relationship with these two neighboors.

      Seth J. Frantzman

5 out of 5 stars A must for the Churchill admirer, student, or skeptic.......2003-12-06

Sir Winston Churchill had no shortage of admirers among the generation that knew, or saw, him during his Finest Hour, 1940-1941. And they have remained legion among later generations. But in the wake of the September 11 attacks, many people -- and especially many politicians in need of stirring rhetoric -- have turned to WSC again, attracted to his reputation, perhaps, more than to the strict details of his long and eventful life.

John Ramsden's fascinating book is an analysis of how Churchill's reputation was born, was consciously shaped by the man himself, and how it has evolved in the years since his death. The bulk of the analysis focuses on the five English-Speaking nations, though Europe is included as well. Another large section looks at the famous "Iron Curtain" or "Sinews of Peace" speech at Fulton, Missouri, in 1946, and how it -- precisely as WSC intended -- transformed the world's view of him from heroic-but-passé war leader to very-much-active statesman, politician, and geopolitical strategist.

A final section, which I found the most interesting, analyses many of the key Churchill biographies written over the years, from Randolph Churchill and Martin Gilbert's official biography, to Lord Moran, to Manchester, to Roy Jenkins' "Churchill: A Biography" (2001), which Ramsden predicts will remain "the authoritative single text for years to come" (p. 545). Ramsden also seems to have counted every Churchill memorial statue, street, pub, and park bench in the world. And while a catalog of these things could easily become tiresome, this author skillfully keeps it from doing so.

This is no small accomplishment. People who write about Churchill are forced to deal with the sheer immensity of his life. Many respond by being prolix, or trite, or they oversimplify, or caricaturize, or fall into either blind hero-worship or equally unnuanced destructiveness. Ramsden does none of these. One way he manages this, of course, is by being fairly sparing of the details of most of WSC's life. Thus, this book will make a lot more sense to someone who already has a fairly good understanding of who the man was, what he did, and when. Another way is by filling his text with stories about, and insights into, Churchill and his contemporaries that are nearly all some combination of fascinating, entertaining, and memorable. Thus, while he's dealing with some Grand Themes, the author surrounds them with a bodyguard of anecdotes that in and of themselves almost guarantee this will be a fun read for any Churchill student or fan.

Significantly, Ramsden is not an *uncritical* admirer of Churchill, though he is clearly an admirer. The Winston we encounter here is not sugarcoated, and some of his unattractive features do come through. That and the mountainous research on display are two signs of Ramsden's chops as a historian.

Finally, as a many-year member of The Churchill Centre and its preceding organization the International Churchill Societies, I should note and commend Ramsden's coverage of this worthy organization. Far from the worshipful society of star-struck fans it is sometimes painted to be, Ramsden shows the CC to be a reputable and respectable association of clear-eyed admirers of the man of the century, warts and all.

I am always amazed at the new aspects or corners of Churchill's life and impact that people can find to write books about. This one, no question, was a book that needed to be written. And for any Churchill student or fan, it's one that needs to be read.

                        Book Description

In 1988 a troubled young man and his flamboyant mother were arrested for murdering a wealthy widow in her New York City mansion. Suddenly, America was transfixed by a pair of real–life film noir characters. The media couldn't get enough of the twisted relationship between Sante Kimes and her twenty–three–year–old son Kenny.

But the most chilling story of all was never told 埵ntil now. Kent Walker, Sante's elder son, reveals how he survived forty years of "the Dragon Lady's" very special brand of motherly love and still managed to get away.

As a child Kent watched his mother destroy his hardworking father, Ed Walker, and then 執ith Kent's painful collusion 埳nare what Sante called "my millionaire." When she married seemingly respectable real–estate developer Ken Kimes, it was a match made in hell.

For the next two decades Kent's mother and stepfather indulged in a globetrotting orgy of criminal behaviour.

Kent, their would–be recruit, was privy to the family business : torching houses, defrauding friends, crashing White When Kent's half–brother, Kenny was born, Kent was twelve years old , old enough to know that he was his younger sibling's only protector. Kent tried desperately to save Kenny from his mother's sinister bidding. His failure haunts him to this day.

Great book for an autobiography. Well-written and quite a story. The only reason I gave it 4 and not 5 stars is that Ann Rule would have done better. But this is definiely still worth the read. I could not put it down. Other reviewers claim that greed overtook the author's sense in the book. That is true, but he ADMITS it. And it must have been difficult for the author to tell the world that.

What a life she lived. what a life she put her family threw.

                        3 out of 5 stars who's grifting who? .......2006-11-20

kent Walker didnt actually commit the crimes, and God knows he has suffered enough with the incredible dysfunction he grew up with, but his book becomes repetitive, almost impossible to believe when time after time he goes back , not just alone but taking his wife and children over and over to live with Sante and Ken and Kenny. He admits to consistantly being swayed by money and the lifestyle and its only at the very end, when sante has been caught tried and found guilty that he really cuts off contact for good.
There were times in the book it became laughable for me, the constant nonsensical lies and hysteria that he bought into again and again and made his living by being fronted with ken and Santes money. I also found his analysis of Kenny being ruined NOT by Sante but by Ken ( his father) very odd. Kent Walker has almost as little introspection and genuine understanding of himself and his life as His mother does.
Its constant scheme after scheme after scheme with names you no longer even register anymore throughout the book that fill up nearly 400 pages.
id have been more interested in someone like Ann Rule writing it. I have no idea why Kent wrote this book. And thats something an author needs to get across, if nothing else.

4 out of 5 stars Like Mother, Like Son.......2006-10-31

I wasn't familiar with the murderous mother and son duo, Sante and Kenny Kimes, both convicted in California for the second of what is believed to be four homicides, until a friend sent me Son of a Grifter, written by Sante's oldest son, Kent Walker. From the unique perspective of one who lived with a veritable cornucopia of abuse - from terror and dodging bullets to blackmail and arson - Kent Walker narrates the outrageous saga of his degenerate, sociopathic mother, her loves, sons and victims, and her ultimate descent into madness.

In retrospect, Kent whitewashes his mother's pathology by blaming it on genetics, convinced she is the descendant of a long line of personality disordered, anti-social crazies. However, regarding his brother Kenny's fate, he is less charitable and condemns nurture rather than nature, indicting both his overindulgent, weak, alcoholic stepfather and his overprotective, paranoid mother whose greed knew no bounds.

For pure gall and tenacity, Sante Kimes has no peer. If she had been hardwired for productive and benevolent purposes, she could have been a notable force for good in the universe. Instead, essentially her entire purpose for existence was to accumulate wealth. Even when she eventually married a millionaire, who was almost her equal in corruption, nothing was ever enough. She burnt down beautiful homes for the insurance, stole furs and cut out the labels for fencing, wrote bad checks to car dealerships for tens of thousands of dollars without blinking an eye, and, worst of all, raised her youngest son to kill for profit.

Kent Walker avoids any psychoanalysis of his mother, preferring to limit his story to the events and consequences of being a member of the Kimes clan, but it is inarguable that Sante was a textbook sociopath: void of conscience, completely self-serving, compulsively driven by excess, reckless disregard for the rights of others, and absolutely no acceptance of blame.

For example, Sante and Ken drove to Mexico, with their boys in the backseat, and picked up young women to smuggle back in the trunk over the border to work as maids in their house. Except they weren't really maids, they were slaves. They received no pay, they were beaten and abused, and when they ran away they were simply replaced with new ones. Even after Sante Kimes served three years in a federal penitentiary for this offence, she continued to pick up homeless people and vagrants and keep them as unpaid servants. Needless to say, she wasn't much of a candidate for rehabilitation.

For those of us who are parents, you will come away from this book feeling like a combination Dr. Spock, Miss Barbara and Mother Teresa. If you think your children grew up in less than ideal circumstances, or their childhood was deprived in some way by your economic circumstances or limited expertise, I assure you it was Paradise compared to the Kimes household. Kenny Kimes was shamelessly spoiled, taught no limits, attended expensive schools, drove sports cars, wore designer suits, and was denied nothing by his wealthy father and grateful mother, who considered him the golden goose because his existence ensured her a piece of the Kimes inheritance. That overindulgence served to turn Kenny into a cold-blooded murderer who will spend the rest of his natural life in prison.

In retrospect, Kent Walker sugar coats much of his childhood, insisting that the crazy episodes comprised only a small fraction of the bigger scene, but this merely proves he has no sense of boundaries or reasonable perspective on what the reader will regard as a nightmare of dysfunction. Son of a Grifter is a long, bizarre story that I don't necessarily recommend to anyone unless they are looking to feel better about their parenting style, or are interested in the Kimes story, as it is probably the most compelling and factually correct presentation. For an overview of the murder trials, see Court TV's Crime Library.

                        5 out of 5 stars Riveting .......2006-08-06

Sante Kimes was written up by many as some type of mastermind of crime, some evil genius. That wasn't really the case at all. What she was was unbelieveably ballsy, insanely narcissistic and self-centered, financially hugely neurotic and desperate and greedy, and of course very quick on her feet. Her crimes are simply too many to list - the book is positively stuffed with fraud, theft, arson, slavery, violence, swindling, in constant repition, and not excluding several murders - and coming from an eyewitness to literally decades of malfeasance they make for a fascinating roller coaster ride. It is a wonder the author didn't turn out every bit as warped as his half-brother. He did not escape unharmed.

None of the characters comes off well. Of course Sandy "Sante" Kimes is a true original, and the focus of the book. But Ken Kimes, her second husband and targetted millionaire, is not some simple dupe or victim; he aided and abetted Sante for decades, allowing his integrity (what little he may have had when he met Sante), his business, his health, and previous family relationships, and finally his wealth all to go into freefall as his 'wife' systematically plundered, wasted or misappropriated whatever she wanted. During the time of her first imprisonment for slavery, when he had a clear chance to make a break and save what was left, he declined to do so, and instead embarked on a multi-year drunk and slid into degenerate gambling to kill time until her release. When Ken finally dies, the author speculates on whether even this was entirely natural, and it seems the dying Ken had a lot on his mind just before checking out. In any event, Ken's death and Sante's subsequent desperate search for what was left of his cash (precious little) pushed her completely over the edge into much nastier criminal territory than she had previously occupied.

The son Kenny probably had a chance at a life but the adventurous high life offered by Sante seemed more fun. He had neither the charm or much of the luck of his mother.

The character of the police in the various cities should also be mentioned. It is simply shocking how lazy, stupid, and disinterested the various officers, who could have busted Sante et al dozens and dozens of times, were. Time and again either the victims or even the son Kent himself give the local cops absolutely everything they need to know, but they just couldn't give a crap. Had they made even the slightest effort to enforce or uphold the law, the Kimes' crime spree would have ended decades sooner, and some people might still be alive. It is their failure, and not Sante's evil genius, which is in part responsibile for both the sheer number of her crimes, and the related and contributing factor of her perceived invulnerability. Some of them should be charged as accessories for the crimes they thereby allowed to happen.

This was a great book. It fascinated throughout.
