Book Description

A tree is the biggest plant that grows. Trees can live for a very long time, and they are alive all year long, even when they look dead in winter.

In this newly illustrated book, you will learn how a tree grows and how it gets food and water. You can also find out what happens to water after it travels through a tree's roots, branches, and leaves, and how to figure out a tree's age.

Clyde Robert Bulla's simple and concise text and Stacey Schuett's lush illustrations follow a tree's continuous life cycle through spring, summer, winter, and fall.

5 out of 5 stars A wonderfully entertaining picturebook ideal for young readers ages 3 through 7.......2006-02-14

An apple tree is hard at work all year round. In the winter it is getting ready to make apples. All through the spring, summer, and into the fall, the apples are growing. Throughout the process, from bees drawing nectar and pollinating the apple blossoms, to birds and worms attracted to them as food, to their eventually to being harvested for people to enjoy, apple trees are a constant benefit. Our Apple Tree, engagingly written by Gorel Kristina Naslund and superbly illustrated by Kristina Digman follows one particular apple tree though all the seasons of the year in a wonderfully entertaining picturebook ideal for young readers ages 3 through 7. For parents there is even a very "kitchen cook" friendly recipe for Apple Crisp in the back!

                Book Description

The third and fourth books in the innovative Starting Life series are here! These bright, bold picture books for ages 5-8 illustrate the life cycles of nature. Following on the heels of Frog and Butterfly, the series continues with two more familiar topics: ducks and apple trees. Every child is enthralled with baby ducklings at the park, and children everywhere plant seeds in cups for school or daycare projects. These books take readers through each stage of life--from egg to duckling to duck, and from seed to sapling to tree. Lush, accurate illustrations of habitat feature plant life and animals on die-cut pages that get longer as the subject grows bigger. Captions, labels, and diagrams provide lots of information on every page without sacrificing the picture book's beauty and appeal. The story of each animal or plant's life will captivate younger and older children both, and the glossary and index provide extra information for kids or educators who want to know more.

                  Book Description

Every U.S. president is the focus of public scrutiny, but how well do we know these men? What kind of fathers do presidents make? Husbands? Neighbors? Other books focus on the historical achievements of those who have occupied our country's highest office; Lives of the Presidents looks instead at their bad habits, silly nicknames, and strange pets. Every president--from George Washington to Bill Clinton--is included, with an emphasis on those who have had the greatest impact on history. Discover their high points, low points, and the times in between. In this stunning addition to their acclaimed series, Kathleen Krull and Kathryn Hewitt take us beyond politics and photo opportunities, revealing the entertaining, complex, and very real lives of the presidents.

I bought this book some time ago and I realized how good Kathleen Krull and Kathryn Hewitt are at writing books. I am hoping to get Lives of the Artists. Unfortunately, my 9th birthday already passed so I have to wait 5 months (Chistmas.) I highly recommend this book. Hope this was helpful to you.

1 out of 5 stars Not all true.......2006-03-07

This book, as stated by a previous reviewer, is not really for younger children. Even worse, it presents rumors as fact . Warren Harding was rumored to have joined the KKK, even though most of the evidence comes from Klan members themselves. Many historians doubt this happened and have sited far more reliable sources. One of my students, for example, takes this book at face value. It proved a positive learning experience about taking this stuff as is in the book, however, I wish I had not had to do that.

3 out of 5 stars Lives of the Presidents.......2005-04-29

In Lives of the Presidents: Fame, Shame (and What the Neighbors Thought), the author writes brief biographical sketches about each of the presidents from George Washington to William Clinton. Included in the sketches are both historical and anecdotal information about the leaders of our nation. Also included are caricature illustrations of each president.
The information has been compiled from many sources, and communicates new information to the reader. The purpose of the book is to integrate historical facts and humorous tidbits. The information is presented in chronological order, starting with President George Washington. The table of contents includes names, dates in office, and number of terms served. The number of the president is listed on the left; therefore, Grover Cleveland is listed as 22 * 24 (between Arthur and Harrison). The illustrations are interesting, and enhance the biographies. Since they are caricatures, they are not historically accurate. A benefit of the illustrations is that the reader can better remember certain things about a specific president based upon the illustration. The jacket, both front and back, includes a guessing game. Although not every aspect of the figure is examined, much new information can be acquired. Different viewpoints are presented, and fallacies are also addressed. The information sparks interest in biography, as well as government.

Classroom Activity: After reading this book, students will write biographical sketches about world leaders. Included in the class book will be caricatures of the leaders.

                  Book Description

The worlds of the disabled and the "normal" often cross paths—and not always pleasantly. But just think how much better we'd get along if we ALL thought of ourselves as disabled . . .

Like the rest of the world, I have to deal with my strengths and weaknesses in my own unique manner. Many people look at the amount of accomplishments I have managed to achieve in my short life and are amazed that someone who is disabled could have done so much.

Yet I am constantly thinking of how much more there is to do! And if I sat around and spent all of my precious time labeling myself with words like "disabled" and "handicapped," I'd be too busy to ever do anything productive. That is why I say that, in a way, we are ALL disabled. But how?

Don't we all have some area in which we need help?

What about the computer illiterate who panics every time his computer makes a noise, opens an extra window, sends him an "error" message, crashes, or freezes up? In today's technological age, this is definitely a disability that is likely to affect his job performance, his level of proficiency, and perhaps even the security of his very career.

What about the person with extremely poor vision who years to be a fighter pilot, or fly domestic flights for United or Delta? Without corrective surgery, and perhaps even with it, their hopes of achieving their dreams are less than zero.

And what about the would-be athlete who wants nothing less in life than to be an Olympic athlete, a star quarterback, or a diva figure skater—but who just doesn't have the physical skills needed to achieve his or her dreams? After all, professional sports requires more than just heart, drive, and desire. It requires coordination, hand-to-eye skills, visual acuity, and in many cases, very specific physical requirements. After all, it would be difficult for a 6'4", 220-pound woman to be a petite figure skater, while it would be almost impossible for a 5'2", 12-pound man to be a defensive lineman for the New York Jets—or the next Michael Jordan!

Vision, hearing, and coordination problems. Weight, height, physical fitness. Intelligence, IQ, the money to go to a good college. Nationality, race, religion. Fear, weakness, depression. All of these, and the list goes on and on, are disabilities of some sort. Hidden though they may be, and not labeled a specific name or definition such as cerebral palsy, they are nonetheless real and legitimate disabilities that people face on a day-to-day basis.

My best friend in college once compared me to someone that was too short to reach the top shelf in the kitchen. She said that my shakes and the help I needed was no different than the short person who needed help reaching the top shelf. And she was right.

All of us have weakness that must be dealt with, just like my shakes and someone else's shortness. When this happens, a disability occurs. Plain and simple. We all have them, we all deal with them, it's a part of life. It's how we react to those disabilities, it's how we break down the barriers they present, or work our way around them, over them, or through them, that determines how big or little those disabilities are.

"My own path to success is not finished. I have many more dreams and goals to obtain before crossing the finish line. This is likely to be the same for you. Whether your dreams are for financial success, starting a new business, or just getting a job and starting your own family, no one can determine whether you've won or lost in this magical game of life-except yourself."
~ Rob Pritts, FROM CP TO CPA

Despite your disability, you can achieve anything you set your mind to. Despite your disability, you are a valuable and contributing member of society. Despite your disability, you are a unique and special individual the likes of which the world has never seen. Sound to good to be true? It isn't. That's the feeling you'll get while reading Rob Pritts' triumphant new self-help book, FROM CP TO CPA: One Man's Triumph over Cerebral Palsy.

As a popular and inspiring motivational speaker on the subject of disability awareness, Rob Pritts makes no apologies for the fact the he has cerebral palsy. And why should he? From the start, Rob has never let CP slow him down or throw up barriers in the way of his many hopes and dreams. From a self-contained Special Education classroom to the University of Illinois, where Rob obtained a Bachelor of Science degree, to obtaining the CPA certification, Rob's experiences have allowed him to excel into what his former teachers call a "Special Ed Success Story!"

And now that Rob has excelled at his life's ambitions, he is eager to share his positive philosophy with other people with disabilities in his new book: FROM CP TO CPA: One Man's Triumph Over Cerebral Palsy!

From special education teachers to their students, from corporate CEOs to frustrated housewives, from churches to colleges, Rob's message is the same: Don't be discouraged by the cards you've been dealt. Instead, make sure you've always got a winning hand by facing each day with a positive mental attitude-and a humble sense of gratitude.

Rob mixes personal stories of his life as a disabled child, student, graduate, and professional CPA with easy-to-digest lessons aimed at awakening the disability in us all. Followed by evocative journal prompts, FROM CP TO CPA becomes more than just a book, it evolves into an interactive journey through our very souls.

Reading Rob's book is not always easy. Whether you're disabled, or someone without a disability, facing up to your own misconceived notions or perhaps even prejudices is a direct result of Rob's illuminating prose and self-effacing humor. Yet I dare you to walk away from this book uninspired, and as such it makes the perfect tool for facing life more positively when you've been feeling down or uninspired.
