A Good Reference Book for Anyone Working with Fungi.......2000-05-03
This is a good paperback text on mold and yeasts. It is written for medical applications but gives so much information on basic biology, life cycles, lab culture methods, etc., that it is very useful to any field dealing with fungi. Also, since many medically significant fungi are actually opportunistic pathogens, a large percentage of the organisms covered in this book have significance in other fields of study. I would recommend this book to anyone seeking an all around good reference book on molds and yeasts.

Virgin Islands Handbook.......2000-09-04
I have found this handbook very useful at times to help with ideas with activities in snorkling; I found it overall, it be quite simple and not much detail when focusing on places to visit for hikes and such.
Book Description
This new study re-examines the controversial debate on Fascist Italy's road to international conflict that has raged for six decades. The author's privileged access to until now unseen archival materials allows him to assess the ideological, geopolitical, domestic and strategic considerations that shaped Mussolini's alliance with Hitler, and his subsequent decision to wage war against Great Britain and France in June 1940.
Customer Reviews:
Good start but could have used more detail .......2007-09-07
This is an interesting book that gives an overview of how Italy fit into the make up of World War II. There are many books like this one that chart how World War II broke out and this brings an interesting perspective by looking at Italy instead of Germany. The book tracks Mussolini's progress from around 1933-41 and shows how the country was set on a course for war. The factors of what caused Italy to head to Germany from Britain could have been flushed out further and while this was well researched it suffered from a lack of detail. The bibliography is one of the most valuable pieces of this book. I would recommend this book to those wanting a brief overview of diplomacy during the world war II era.
Book Description
The first comprehensive history of the century that produced the greatest number of Catholic martyrs ever. By renowned Catholic writer Robert Royal.
Customer Reviews:
Thorough Compendium of Unsung Heroes.......2005-08-05
Royal does an excellent job researching the martyrology of this past century. While the most recent murders of bishops like Michael Courtney and Luigi Locati are not yet documented, there is alot of material to chew on. The chapters are divided up by region, so you can expect to read a handful of pages about the Holocaust martyrs (almost forgotten & overshadowed witnesses of faith) then on to the genocidal machine of the Soviets, Chinese, etc. The most intersting sections are on the state-sponsored persecutions of the Church close to home-namely Mexico.
The sheer amount of facts, dates and names may make this a bit dry in places and the documentation of total numbers from some places in the tens of thousands evades the personal touch of the "one man martyr", like Kolbe or Pro. In the end expect to come away very informed, awe inspired and inclined to attempt keeping up on the new martyrs who still flood in every year.
An imperfectly written eye opener.......2003-09-06
Robert Royal's book "Catholic Martyrs" is a decent enough effort. I applaud him vigorously for his efforts. He does a decent enough job in laying out the facts concerning the men and women who have died for the Catholic faith in the 20th century. I found the chapter on the "forgotten holocaust", the deaths of 10 million Ukrainian Catholics at the hands of Stalin and the Marxist/Communists to be quite an eye opener. Likewise, his chapter on Edith Stein who died as St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross to be well written.
The same cannot be said for some of the other chapters. One reviewer pointed out the one of the more puzzling lines, "Christ told so-and-so to tell some funny stories". Okaaay.
But those minor slip ups aside, I do recommend this book to anyone who wants to find out more about the courageous men and women who gave their lives for the church. So do buy this book and read it. It is worth your time and money.
Great Idea; Weak Execution.......2001-09-24
Robert Royal deserves resounding applause for having taken on an important, difficult, and outrageously neglected subject. To be sure, Mr. Royal's heart is in the right place -- which is more than one can say for his writing skills. Is this book terribly written? By no means. Nevertheless, Mr. Royal has a rather pedestrian and awkward style. And there are some unbelievable errors: People are hanged, Mr. Royal, not hung. In addition, there are many passages that fizzle out, that never really go anywhere. And I had very little interest in the rather lenghty and tedious biographical information on several of the martyrs. Their martyrdom, the circumstances leading up to and surrounding it, and the ultimately beneficial results for the Church is where the focus should have been. Finally, Mr. Royal's selection of Marie-Michel Marcel Van surprised me -- "At one point, Christ even asked Van to tell him some funny stories." Uh-huh. And the same is true of his selection of Archbishop Romero. Mr. Royal does not persuade that the Archbishop wasn't a Marxist wedded to Liberation Theology. The Archbishop was brutally murdered, to be sure. But was he also martyred? Did he die for the Faith or for a bankrupt ideology?
Despite these and other imperfections, I do indeed recommend this book -- it is something of a monument to those who paid the ultimate price or at least suffered greatly as witnesses to the Fullness of Truth.
Outstanding account of men & women truly devoted to Christ.......2001-09-19
How can I put my experience reading this book into words. Story after story provides accounts of amazing men and women who, in the face of unthinkable torture and certain death, simply would not abandon their Savior nor the Church in Rome. Each chapter details the persecution of Catholics in a different part of the world, including Mexico, Soviet Russia and its Territories, Ukraine, Charles de Foucauld, Spain, Nazi Holocaust, Edith Stein, Poland and Saint Maximillian Kolbe, Eastern and Central Europe - An Introduction, Albania, Lithuania, Romania, Latin America (including Archbishop Romero of El Salvador), Asia - An Introduction, China, Korea, Vietnam, and Africa. Some chapters portray individuals such as Charles de Foucauld, Edith Stein, and Saint Maximillian Kolbe.
This book will amaze and inspire you. It is a textbook on how to love Christ above all and a reminder that the Catholic faith is truly worth dying for.
Good Friday continues.......2001-08-20
Robert Royal's account of the 20th century martyrs is grim, compelling, necessary. To read this book is to take one's place with St John the Evangelist, St Mary Magdalene, and the Mother of God under the shadow of the Cross. We read with what relentless fury, with what dehumanizing atrocity, the secular persecutors of the Church treated the priests, religious & layfolk. The section on the Spanish Civil War was especially eye-opening & horrifying: a needed corrective to histories that have been told from the skewed standpoint of the Left. The luminous examples of Miguel Pro of 1920s Mexico, of Charles de Foucauld in 1916 North Africa, of Oscar Romero and others, will inspire any reader. They are not double-minded souls, but lovers of God's law. The Communist atrocities in Albania and Rumania are particularly reprehensible and sickening, the tortures devised quite hellish. We are angered at the comparative silence of other historians when denouncing the evils that came from these nations.
The history (not comprehensive, the author admits, in spite of the subtitle which the publisher insisted upon) takes us to the days of Solidarity in Poland, through Korea, Vietnam, and China, through martyrs of the Idi Amin era in Uganda, and the awesome example of the seven Cistercian Trappists in Tibhirine (Our Lady of Atlas), Algeria, who were compelled to surrender their lives in 1996. In the chapter on Vietnam, Cardinal Francis X. Nguyen Van Thuan tells of his days in Communist prisons.
"Is thy steadfast love declared in the grave, thy faithfulness in Abaddon? Are thy wonders known in the darkness, thy saving help in the land of forgetfulness?" Robert Royal answers the psalmist's plaintive questions (from Psalm 88) in the affirmative. "The Catholic Martyrs of the Twentieth Century" is a harrowing account which can dishearten, and cause us to hate what is evil more than we love what is good, but the unwavering confidence and hope of these scores of Christian martyrs -- from St Maximilian Kolbe to the Vietnamese Redemptorist who would banter with the saints in heaven -- will almost certainly inspire and fortify.

Rebalancing What we Know of Serbia and Serbian History.......2001-10-03
I don't agree with the other reader who emphasizes the uneven distribution of figures presented here: Western readers know far, far less about the pre-World War II period in Serbia and which is a master key to what would follow: American and Central European history books leave out much too much, in fact nearly everthing that would be important in the World War II and post-war period. This pathetically biased treatment against Serbia in the American history books can be viewed as in part rebalanced in this book and also for that reason this is worth reading! The more I read in this area, the more shocked I am in what we have read in High School history texts and at University.
A Different, yet not fully satisfying, look at Serb History.......2000-11-07
Can we understand the history of a nation by looking its leaders? Political biographies seek to explore the public and private lives of presidents, prime ministers, etc. and thus try to enhance our understanding of historical events. Similarly, Pavkovic's and Radan's collection of essays on Serbs and their leaders highlights some aspects and 'present new perspectives' (p.vii) on the history of Serbs. Already the selection of 'leaders' covered by this volume indicates some of the problems associated with such an approach, as the editors concede. Of the eight biographical chapter, seven cover kings, generals and other Serbian leaders of the firsthalf of the 20th century, the essay on Slobodan Milosevic stands alone to represent the second half of the century. Did Serbs have no leaders between 1945 and 1988? Obviously Communist Yugoslavia, despite the predominant role played by Tito for its first three and a half decades, possessed a number of Serbian politicians in leading positions, besides Milovan Djilas and Aleksander Rankovic, both mentioned by the editors: Latinka Perovic and Marko Nikezic during the 'liberal' phase in the late sixties and early seventies, as well as later on Dragoslav Markovic, Petar and Ivan Stambolic in the seventies and early eighties. Leaving out these leaders insinuates the wide-spread perception that post-war Yugoslavia was ruled against and not with the participation of Serbs. Finally, the question remains, of whether Tito was a Serb leader. The renaming of the bulevar Tito into bulevar Srpskih Vladara (Serbian Leaders) in downtown Belgrade has given rise to the joke that actually the name did not change at all-nobody ruled longer over the Serbs than Tito. Similarly, one has to question the 'ethnic' definition of leaders in the volume, which eventually obscures a significant chapter of Serbian history. If one is to exclude Tito, the title of the book would be more appropriately called "Serb Leaders in the 20th century" The tone of the different chapters varies greatly. Some take a distinctive national(ist) tone, accepting explicitly or implicitly the premises of national historiography, such as Branislav Gligorijevic's chapter of Alkesandar Karadjordjevic ('King Aleksandar was a national king in a sense that cannot be applied to any European monarch going back centuries. He was of pure Serbian blood on both sides of the family, proud of his peasant origins ...', p.140), or Kosta Nikolic's chapter on Dragoljub-Draza Mihailovic, which devotes more space to the reasons why Britain 'betrayed' the Chetniks than their atrocities. Others, such as Lenard Cohen's, tries to paint a more differentiated picture. The chapter on Slobodan Milosevic by Cohen offers some interesting insights, unfortunately, however, restricts itself to the period of his rise and refrains from discussing the politics of Milosevic, once in power. Cohen's analysis is important in terms of identifying the instrumentalization of nationalism and pointing out that nationalism, just like communism provided an adequate tool for Milosevic in his quest to preserve his personal power. Other chapters discuss Nikola Pasic, Dragutin-Dimitrijevic-Apis, King Petar Karadjordjevic, Radomir Putnik, Prince Pavle and Karadjordjevic. Returning to the original question, we have to note that the (short) biographies of political and military leaders only help to supplement, but not replace a general history of Serbian history in the 20th century (which is still lacking in English). Considering, that Serbs have spent seven decades of this century in Yugoslavia, increases the need to consider a history of leaders in the larger context of the first and second Yugoslavia.

Superb Writing; Superb Story.......2007-06-13
"Memoirs of a Yukon Priest "by Segundo Llorente Georgetown University Press, 1990.
This is the autobiography of a Spaniard,(born in Leon, Spain), who spent most of his adult life as a missionary to the natives of Alaska. At the age of ten, Llorente went to the local preseminary school, where "...the main academic fare was Latin eight hours a day". Then, he studied at the Jesuit novitiate in Castile and, at twenty, he made plans to go to Alaska, which had no native priests. He was ordained a Jesuit priest in the United States, where he studied English at Gonzaga University. This illustrates one of the main themes in this book: language. Fr. Llorente had to first learn Spanish, then Latin, then English, and then the different Eskimo (Inuit) languages. In 1935, the author was a"...full-fledged priest" and, in the midst of the Great Depression, he was able to earn enough money to purchase a brand-new typewriter with Spanish characters, with which he intended to "... support myself in Alaska by writing for publication in his spare times". He must have written very well since the WEB lists quite a few books, in Spanish, under his name.
After the first seven pages of the book, introducing his life, the author spends the remainder of the book, about 233 pages, describing this life, his work, his loneliness, and his priesthood among the Eskimos in Alaska. He spends a few chapters on Alaska, itself, the Yukon River, the climate and especially travelling in the coldness of Winter. Much of the book, however, is devoted to his relations with the local people and the local priests. The writing is superb.
Throughout the book, there is a subliminal sense of humor, which surfaces, now and then, into print. Look at pages 64 and 65, where the town of Kotzebue wanted Fr. Llorente to treat them to a full-blown bull fight, since he was Spanish. The good father did so, pulled the bull by his tale, and then whacked the bull on his nose. Finally, the priest "...stood there with ... (his) ...cane raised to the sky - a symbol of victory". Fr. Llorente has written a very funny story of the convergence of two different cultures, the Spanish and the Eskimo, in the town common when a bull had been delivered. Later, the bull was butchered to serve as a source of protein for the coming long winter.
Besides all the material aspects of life, the good priest-author deals with the spiritual, showing signs of Spanish mysticism. Recall that both St. Theresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross were Spanish. When Fr. Llorente writes about Christ in the Holy Eucharist, with both of them alone in a cold church on the Yukon, his writing and description become very close to what I would consider mysticism. (See the first chapter of "Truth And Tolerance" by Josef Cardinal Ratzinger, Ignatius Press, 2003).
But Fr. Llorente was also man of the world, and was popular enough amongst his flock for them to elect him to the State Legislature. It would seem that he was the first Roman Catholic priest to be elected to a legislature in these United States. His service as a legislator brought him into a sort of conflict with his bishop, the Rev. O'Flanagan, who was concerned with separation of church and state; this brief episode is described at the very end of the book. This book is a wonderful record of the excellent efforts of one man, Fr. Segundo Llorente, S.J., 1906-1989.
Disclosure: I received this book as result of a very small donation to the Catholic Bishop of Northern Alaska.
