    Book Description

This is the story of back-country Turkey, an area that even in the 20th century remains stubbornly tied to antiquity. The author traveled through it by truck and horseback, often alone. She reached places little visited and never written about. The country people welcomed her with generosity unrelated to their meager resources.

She was traveling in time as well, and found significance in recalling the life of Alexander the Great. Twenty-two centuries ago he was the first to dream of a united world.

"Magnificent...a brilliant and inspiring account of her journey along the coastline of Turkey and back into time." (The Observer)

"Her books have as their obvious destiny inclusion in the aristocracy of letters." (The Evening Standard)

4 out of 5 stars Journeys in time.......2002-08-05

The perfect complement to be reading during our hiking trip in Lycia, spring, 2002. Challenged by the meagerness of the historical record of Alexander's progress along the Lycian coast, Stark set out in the 1950s to retrace and discover his most likely trail. Alexander had come to Xanthos, then after starting to the north, towards Gordium, suddenly made a sharp change of direction towards current day Antalya. Stark travels the route in reverse, driving from Antakya to Antalya. Today, several modern roads allow easy access to the historic sites she visited - Selge, Termessus, Phaselis, Phellus, Xanthos and others, but she journeyed by jeep and donkey, often on indistinct tracks. She mixes historical ruminations with the journal of her travels among Turkey's ever-hospitable people. Some of the things she described now seem as far away as Alexander, but much of her description serves as an apt guide for today's traveler especially those who get off the roads and walk along the recently created long distance path, The Lycian Way. ...

She speaks of Alexander as the first to dream of a united world "We have wandered to the unity of the world from the city state which was all that the Lycians could have known when the Macedonians came. These valleys had a culture of their own since the Bronze Age, but the most they had reached was a federation of separate units, which the Lycian League seem to have invented independently in the valley of the Xanthus. It was efficient enough to maintain their freedom... It was easier to love such places than the union of mankind. This fact is, I suppose, the origin of all wars and most of our troubles; and one can only attain the more universal view by travelling in body or in spirit and noticing how deeply most places are the same. This Alexander did; and the Transition must have been working in his mind along the Lycian coast, with the possibly unexpected kindness of a half-oriental world about him."

For a far less generous and romanticized view of Alexander, check out Victor Hanson's histories (his basic view is that 'adolescent thug' is too kind)

        Book Description

Will it follow the model of the Western capitalist democracies, as those who applied the economic shock therapy of the early 90s hoped, or will it chose its own distinct path of development? In this history of Russia from 1917 to the present, Alexander Chubarov teases out certain themes developed in his previous book on tsarist Russia (The Fragile Empire).

One of the key factors to Russia's distinctiveness is its halfway location in the center of the Eurasian landmass. This lends an inevitability to the traditional cultural schism between Westernizing reformers and Slavophiles. Neither approach, says Chubarov, will work on its own. Chubarov offers "a balanced view, abstaining from narrow, ideologically biased assessments," and examines the triumphs (yes) and failures of Russia's Soviet development "within Russia's own cultural and historical context." Without ever minimizing the brutalities of the Soviet period-the state terror, the collectivizations, the labor camps, the deportations of whole peoples-Chubarov demonstrates much continuity between tsarist and Soviet Russia, with the latter often repeating the former's mistakes. Russia, says Chubarov, cannot turn its back on its Soviet experience. Far from being a blind alley or "aberrant phase," the Soviet period was an organic part of Russia history and "was largely successful in turning Russia and most of the other Soviet republics into modern states."

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic survey-level text for comparative religions.......2003-09-23

This textbook was required for a class I took in Far Eastern religion a few years ago. My professor had studied with Hutchinson at the Claremont Graduate School. This book is academically rigorous and clearly written. It provides a solid conceptual framework within which you can even-handedly study all the world's religions, from a social science perspective. As my professor said on the first day of class, "I'm not here to teach you religion; I'm here to teach you /about/ religion." After the semester was over, I went through and read the other half of the textbook, on Western religions. I retained more from this class than many others I've had over the years. It is full of insight and very thorough.

                      Book Description

Growing up as the son of a successful businessman and famous politician, George W. Bush emerged from his father's shadow to carve out a thriving political career of his own. From his earliest days in Washington, D. C. and his years as Texas governor, George W. studied the political game, assembled a superb team and propelled to the top of the Republican list of presidential nominees.

                      Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars What's he all about, George W?.......2000-09-16

His goal for Texans to take "renewed personal responsibility" for their lives was one he took on for himself. Although a lot of the material here can be found in other sources, this is is a very current biography, ending just before Bush's defeat of Senator McCain in the 2000 Republican presidential primary. Wukovits traces W's life from childhood until then using quotes from family, friends, fellow business people, and government officials. Not a white-washed account, the negatives as well as the positives of his life are treated fairly objectively. Black and white photos, notes, index, and a list of works for further reading are included.

                                      Book Description

The legendary Seattle stories from Hate comics that defined a generation.

The Harvey Award-winning cartoonist Peter Bagge remains one of the comics' industry's great crossover successes of the past decade, having sold more comics than any underground cartoonist through the 1990s to the present. After editing R. Crumb's Weirdo magazine in the mid-'80s and then creating the Bradley family within the pages his first comic book series, Neat Stuff, Bagge decided to take the Bradleys' alienated and pessimistic teenage son, Buddy, and move him to Seattle (where Bagge lived) to star in a new series called Hate. The rest is comic book history. Hate became the best-selling "alternative" comic book of the 1990s at the same time that Seattle found itself in the eye of a media hurricane. With its satirical depiction of twentysomething life in Seattle, Hate became one of the defining voices of not only the Seattle "grunge" scene, but all of Generation X nationwide (and has been spotted in many films through the years, from Larry Clark's Kids to John Waters' Pecker). In addition, critics hailed it for its brilliant characterization. The Seattle Weekly wrote, "20 years from now, when people wonder what it was like to be young in 1990's Seattle, the only record we'll have is Peter Bagge's Hate."

For 15 issues, the rock 'n' roll emanating from the damp garages of the Pacific Northwest came to life in glorious black-and-white in the pages of Hate. Bagge more or less cemented his association with the subculture in 1992 when he devoted two issues of Hate to a story where Buddy Bradley manages his best pal Stinky's grunge band, Leonard and the Love Gods, whose original lineup included three guys named Kurt.

Buddy Does Seattle collects the entire Seattle arc from the pages of Hate; this is the first time the entire saga has appeared under one cover. Bagge's characters are some of the most fully-realized in comics—Buddy, the slacker antihero, Valerie, Buddy's Prozac-normalized ex, Lisa, his masochistic, worm-eating latest flame, Stinky, his selfish, venereal-warted roommate, and George Cecil Hamilton III, the resident "intellectual," who sits in his room scribbling depressive arcana into his notebook—they display their emotions so openly, so helplessly, so graphically, and with such precision as they attempt to negotiate the ragged terrain of early adulthood that it would all be rather horrifying if it weren't such a riot. Bagge's cartooning aids the cause, with one of the most idiosyncratic and inspiredly elastic and cartoony drawing styles in comics history.

4 out of 5 stars The EARLY 90's.......2007-06-15

I was a angry teen during these times and Hate was really the only account I had of what 20 year olds were doing and how they were living. I had no idea about any of it until I read Hate.
Anyway, I got the Buddy does Jersey first. This one is pretty good but not as funny as Buddy does Jersey. This one does chronicle the music scene at that time and all the posers, freaks & neurotics that were around.

5 out of 5 stars Truly the best of the best!.......2007-04-20

This collection includes the funniest issues from one of the all-time funniest comic books ever created. Peter Bagge is an absolute genius whose ear for dialogue and eye for details is unmatched. From the comic book fans arguing over Kelly vs. Kurtzmann to the garage rock band at rehearsal to the encounter with an old girlfriend, every detail rings hilariously true. If you've ever shared a cheap apartment with an assortment of weird roommates, you need to read this book, and as soon as possible. This is an all-time classic that will have you rolling on the floor with laughter.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best!.......2007-01-09

Okay, so Hate is generally criticized by its fans (which is bizarre in itself) for "selling out" and going to a color format. Well, you have nothing to complain about with this volume; it's the ENTIRE black & white run of Hate, from #1-15, all in one book! AWESOME! I had most of the comics of this group, but having them bound all together really increases the joy of following the whole storyline from issue to issue (not to mention I was missing a few issues, and to be honest who wants to hunt down separate comics when you can have it all in one book?).

The only downside of this volume is that it is slightly smaller than the original comic size. So, Bagge's busy inking style gets compressed somewhat, which is a bit of a drag. If you want full-size, I would suggest getting the 5-issue full-size volumes available. The only drawback is that you'd have to buy 1-5, 6-10, & 11-15, and they each retail for $16.95 (though I got the 21-25 volume for $4.95 right here from an Amazon re-seller, so really...).

Overall, I'd say this is a perfect carry-around volume of the BEST era of Hate. The ONLY negative is the size, and it's really not small, just small-ER than the comic. Which also makes it easier to carry around, so...what was I talking about?

Oh, and there's also a pretty lengthy interview with Bagge at the front, if you like that kinda thing (as I do!).

                                      I recommend!
