Book Description
Embarking on a new life, Zoe and her family journey west to the Nebraska Territory in the 1800s.
When Zoe and her family arrive at their claim, nothing distinguishes it from the miles and miles of surrounding prairie. Even after they build their soddie, the home can't be seen from any distance. Zoe has never seen Papa so happy or Mama so sad. But when she takes a trip to the small prairie town with Papa, Zoe sees something that might make a difference to their new soddie, and to Mama's life, too.

Dandelions.......2006-08-04
This is a book I would use to add to the list of the many books written by Eve Bunting.
Great story.......2006-03-20
This is a great introduction to the saga of the western movement. My daughter is almost 4...a bit over her head.
DANDELIONS by Eve Bunting.......2002-07-24
DANDELIONS is a very moving story. It does an excellent job in describing the struggles and bravery of a pioneer family. Although it doesn't detail why the family had to leave Illinois (their home), it does show readers that even back then parents may not have always agreed on family issues. Through the dialogue in the story it is apparent that the family wants their apprehensive, pregnanat mother to be happy, and they strive to make her so. The painted illustrations by Shed were very true-to-life and warm; they establish the setting and mood of each page. Further, the pictures helped define the characters by showing emotion through facial expressions and body language. Of course, those factors contributed in reinforcing the text. Despite the fact that the artwork has a warm fuzz to it (almost giving a surrealistic feel), attention to detail was definitely established, giving the story realism and life.
Dandelions.......2000-01-16
This beautifully illustrated(Greg Shed) picture book tells the story of a pioneer family settling in the Mid-West. Mama, Papa and their two daughters, Zoe and Rebecca have left the security of home in Illinois to settle on the Prairie. Papa and Zoe make a pact that they will help Mama feel better about living on the Prairie. After Zoe and her sister plant a patch of dandelions on the roof of their sod house, Mama agrees that their family is hardy and will bloom just as the dandelions are sure to do. This book, told from Zoe's viewpoint, is a touching recount of the feelings of the sodbusters. Would be very useful for primary teachers and media specialists in the mid-west states.
Dandelions, A Wonderful Book.......2000-01-06
My third grade class read Dandelions as a large group. We loved the pictures and the characters. It was very interesting learning about the way families settled the land. We decided that the book was showing us that families are like dandelions and they both grow with love and caring.

Product Description
The Teeth of the Lion tells the story of the common dandelion, that remarkably widespread plant that is known, for better or worse, by just about everybody. Through a series of short essays, written in accessible language and a thoroughly engaging style, Anita Sanchez takes the reader on a journey through the natural history of the dandelion and its long association with humans. Joan Jobson s illustrations add important details and subtle accents that enhance this journey. Well adapted ecologically to spread into and thrive within disturbed sites -- such as the lawns, playgrounds, roadsides, and parking lots in which they are most often encountered today, and viewed as weeds -- dandelions also have had a lengthy, welcomed association with humans as medicine, food, and objects of ritual, magic, and folklore. The Teeth of the Lion will be a source of enjoyable, fascinating, memorable information of interest to all users. It will provide naturalists, wildflower enthusiasts, gardeners, interpreters, teachers, landscapers, and homeowners a better understanding of one of the most common, well-known, and perhaps underappreciated plants to be found anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Small book, big bite.......2007-05-17
The Teeth of the Lion conveys the fascinating story of the dandelion and considerably more.
Authoritative, yet never overbearing, this lively book provides the facts on dandelions while leading the reader to ponder knowledge gained and lost, the art and practice of medicine and just how our planet might fare in the future. An impressive scope for a little book about an underappreciated little plant.
Read this book and you won't look at dandelions or the world in the same way.
An enchanting and fascinating read, highly recommended for plant lovers of all walks of life........2007-03-07
Written by senior environmental educator Anita Sanchez, The Teeth of the Lion is the true story of the ubiquitous dandelion, a flower so ecologically adapted, flourishing in so many lawns, playgrounds, roadsides, and parking lots, that it is commonly perceived as a weed. Yet the dandelion has an extended history as medicine, food, and the focus of ritual and folklore. "...are dandelions bad? If forced to answer the question, I'd say that dandelions are a bad thing, an alien species, with many redeeming virtues. They're an unbelievably nutritious plant that heals the earth as well as people, they're medicine, and magic, and, yes, beauty... in the great scheme of the world's ecology, what's a few dandelions on a lawn?" An enchanting and fascinating read, highly recommended for plant lovers of all walks of life.

Book Description
The peaceful town of Lake Emily will never be the same when Trudy Ploog comes to stay!
Mae Morgan’s flamboyant art teacher sister, Trudy Ploog, moves to the quiet, rural town of Lake Emily, Minnesota, to be closer to Bert Biddle, her shy, unassuming farmer boyfriend. Everything is perfect and then…the school board cuts the Gifted and Talented program and rumors of more cuts fly.
Outraged, Trudy kicks up a whirlwind, beginning with a letter to the paper that questions the very foundation of small-town life–high school sports! Soon the whole town is talking, and Trudy and Bert are put to the test. Meanwhile, the Morgan family is recovering from the loss of a child and the death of a life-long dream as Virginia Morgan helps a father and daughter rediscover life.
A hopeful story of facing the challenges of life with courage and learning to see with eyes of grace, Dandelions in a Jelly Jar gently reminds you that the best bouquets are dandelions.

Customer Reviews:
Predictable.......2007-08-31
I will be honest. I just skim-read this book in about an hour and a half, because there was just not much plot to follow. I read the first book, and it was just okay. I was hoping this book would expand on the characters, but the characters are just shallow and immature. I really wanted to like this series. With that being said, it was not a bad little story, and actually kind of cute in spots, just don't expect much from it.
Author, Author!!.......2007-07-08
Traci DePree is a fantastic author in the religious fiction genre. She writes about what she knows, southern Minnesota. There is great comfort reading about your own area in a book. The first in the series, "A Can of Peas", is one that made me laugh and cry more than any book I've read. Ms. DePree has a writing style that is straight forward and to the point. She doesn't use complicated sentences or difficult words to understand. She is a phenomenal writer that I will definitely follow in the future.
Reality Check.......2007-02-06
Find something else to read! To compare this series equably with the Mitford series is an insult to Jan Karon. DePree's ideas are great, but she can not bring them to life. To open one of the Lake Emily books is to open a giftbox and find it empty. Too many characters and the main ones are so flat that it is hard to care about what is happening to them. I have had to read the series for my book club and it has been an eternity waiting for it to end. Is the Christian genre so desperate for writers to feed a hungry market that it would publish these one-dimensional stories?
The dandelions died.......2006-10-27
This book was disappointing. The main characters were flat. The reader cannot get to know them or care what happens to them. There are so many secondary characters that it is hard to keep everybody straight.
I also had trouble "getting into" the scene. A good book will draw me in, making me feel like I'm there, participating in it all. I could not get that from this book.
This is supposed to be a Christian book, but God is barely mentioned at all. He doesn't seem to have a place in their lives. It's like He is an after-thought.
I will not read any other books that follow this series.
A joy to read.......2006-05-12
Dandelions In A Jelly Jar is the second book in the Lake Emily series by Traci DePree. This time, the main part of the story centers around Trudy Ploog but we still get to visit with some of our favorite characters from A Can Of Peas.
Trudy moves to Lake Emily to teach at the local school and to be closer to Burt and her sister Mae. Life is not going to be easy for her because Trudy has a way of opening up her big mouth and causing a bit of trouble. Lake Emily will never be the same with Trudy in the mix.
I cant wait to read Aprons On A Clothesline to see where this story goes.

Make Way For Dandelions.......2000-06-11
The illustrations in this book are lovely. They are very simple and accessable for young children, and manage to catch each of the changes through which the dandelion goes as it progresses through its life cycle. It's on the level of the other nature/life cycle books in John Himmelman's series: A Wood Frog's Life, A House Spider's Life, A Monarch Butterfly's Life, A Slug's Life, etc.

Review of The Liturgies of Quakerism.......2007-08-29
Most practicing Quakers would be a bit shocked to hear someone refer to their silent/unprogrammed Meeting for Worship as a liturgy. In most Quaker minds the term liturgy is normally associated with Roman Catholicism, High Anglican Mass, or Eastern Orthodoxy and not with the radical Protestant sect that arose in the 1650's in England. Many would also be puzzled by the use of the plural, "liturgies," in the title of Pink Dandelion's The Liturgies of Quakerism.
But, Professor Dandelion makes a strong case that the iconic silent Meeting for Worship is as dramatic, powerful and as carefully structured as the more showy liturgies practiced by others. His point is, that the Anglican Mass and the Quaker Meeting are similar in their essence as a group practice meant to bring to the assembly the divine presence, though outwardly they appear to be different in each instance. He also makes a very cogent argument that as Quakerism underwent cultural, social, and historic changes a variety of forms of worship arose. On one end we have worship that appears to be close to the standard pastoral Protestant service, on the other, the "classical" Quaker unprogrammed Meeting. Finally, Dandelion makes the argument that while the modern silent Worship of Liberal Quakers is close in form to the original practice, that in its essence it is a radical departure from the normative Quaker liturgy of the first half of the 17th century. This point is perhaps Dandelion's most exiting contribution to the understanding of Quaker worship, although it is also the one that is most controversial.
The author develops his arguments by following, over the centuries, two specific themes in the writings of Quakers. The first theme is "time"--specifically, the time of Christ's Second Coming and the arrival of the Kingdom of God; the other, "intimacy" i.e., the degree of presence of the Divine in the life of individuals and the worship group. The arguments presented are complex and very interesting.
The Liturgies of Quakerism is not an easy read. This is an academic monograph that suffers from the limitations of that genre in that it makes most sense to professional colleagues who have the necessary academic background in the subject to be able to read the work critically. For a lay reader the book is challenging, and for an American the peculiarities of British English spelling and syntax present an additional hurdle.
I enjoyed the book, although I am finding myself re-reading it for the third time in order to grasp its arguments completely. My chief difficulty with it is that I don't necessarily agree with Dandelion's treatment of theology as possessing an independent reality. Just as grammar is a convenient abstraction of language and not an inherent quality of it (my apologies to Noam Chomsky), theology for non-creedal mystic traditions is, at most, a means to an end and not the reality of it. That being said, I find the treatment of Liberal Quakerism very interesting and worthy of further consideration and thinking.

The Plausibility of Life: Resolving Darwin's Dilemma
ASIN: 0198503938 |
Book Description
The earth is home to a wild proliferation of species, millions of life-forms that come in a spectacular--and often bizarre--array of sizes, shapes, and colors. But what triggers this fantastic explosion of life? How does one species split into another? Even Charles Darwin was baffled before
such questions, calling them "The Mystery of Mysteries."
In this fascinating, witty, and vividly written book, Menno Schilthuizen illuminates these questions, showing how biologists and zoologists over the last two centuries have responded to them, assessing our current knowledge of species, and proposing his own solution to Darwin's mystery. Using
the sometimes-vicious academic debates and the powerful personalities of scientists as background, Schilthuizen explores the meandering path of species research and sets it out in the clearest possible terms. From looking at how we define a species, to exploring how geographical isolation and sexual
selection contribute to making new species, to showing how species may appear gradually or instantaneously, Frogs, Flies, and Dandelions offers a comprehensive account of this evolutionary drama. Along the way, we get to know a remarkable cast of characters from the plant and animal kingdoms, from
the copper-loving monkey flower to sockeye salmon, fire-bellied toads, lyrebirds, apple maggot flies, and many others. Most important, we get a clear picture of all the conditions necessary for one species to give birth to another.
Written with engaging panache, and illuminating an area of study intensely relevant to any assessment of the earth's biodiversity, Frogs, Flies, and Dandelions will appeal to everyone--scientist and layperson alike--curious about nature and animal behavior.
Customer Reviews:
got me through my pre-lims ! .......2007-10-16
This book is chock full of current "problems" in systematics and species concepts. I was able to use several of these stories to pass my oral pre-lims in entomology and systematics!
I told the author so in an email! :)
This was a few years ago - and now I'm returning to this book again in order to locate or develop a post-doc.
evolutionary theory for everyone.......2005-07-05
One of the deepest questions in evolution is how new species form. A common view is that some members of a species have to become spatially isolated from the other members of the species in order for them to become a new species. This view, that a new species cannot form in the same territory as the old species has been challenged by many biologists who have used a variety of experimental and observational methods. They have shown that natural selection is a bigger factor than isolation in the formation of new species and that members of the same species living in the same territory can occupy different environmental niches. Since each niche is associated with different selection pressures, new species can and do form on the same territory as old ones.
This new chapter of scientific history can now be read by everyone thanks to this clear, entertaining and even amusing book.
best book I've read in a long time.......2004-03-29
I couldn't put this book down! I was extremely impressed with this author and wish he had written a dozen books already! I learned so much from this author and would highly recommend it to both scientists and non-scientists. I can see this book being looked at 50 years from now as well, so people can see where we got our evolutionary theories of today.
Entertaining, up-to-date view of speciation theory.......2001-09-26
This is an extremely entertaining overview of the major theories of how new species emerge during biological evolution. Ideas from the technical literature such as allopatric speciation, sympatric speciation, and speciation through polyploidy are presented with lots of concrete examples, making the ideas very easy to digest.
The science really comes alive in this book. Interviews with the scientists in the thick of research are enough to get you cheering for them. Also, Schilthuizen dramatizes in an engaging way the disputes between advocates of different theories of speciation.
Finally, a useful glossary is provided at the end for anyone rusty on terminology from biology.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a quick, fun, yet informative, well-referenced, and up-to-date account of the state of the art in evolutionary biology.

World-renowned fantasist Ray Bradbury has on several occasions stepped outside the arenas of horror, fantasy, and science fiction. An unabashed romantic, his first novel in 1957 was basically a love letter to his childhood. (For those who want to undertake an even more evocative look at the dark side of youth, five years later the author would write the chilling classic Something Wicked This Way Comes.)
Dandelion Wine takes us into the summer of 1928, and to all the wondrous and magical events in the life of a 12-year-old Midwestern boy named Douglas Spaulding. This tender, openly affectionate story of a young man's voyage of discovery is certainly more mainstream than exotic. No walking dead or spaceships to Mars here. Yet those who wish to experience the unique magic of early Bradbury as a prose stylist should find Dandelion Wine most refreshing. --Stanley Wiater
Book Description
The summer of '28 was a vintage season for a growing boy. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma's belly-busting dinner. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding--remembered forever by the incomparable Ray Bradbury.
From the Paperback edition.

Dandelion Wine.......2007-08-10
It was for my daughter. She likes to listen to books on tapes and CDs and read the book too. She was very happy with this item.
Not Bradbury's Best but a Fine Old World Novel........2007-07-30
This is the book I generally recommend to people who have not read Ray Bradbury before because it's not too complicated and yet still manages to have that spiritual, unearthly quality that all of his works are known for. And like all of his stories, this one is a bit on the wordy side. Ray is the king of description, but it would be only fair to say that he often gets carried away with too many details of surroundings and atmospheres that add nothing to the story but more words. On the other hand he probably gets paid by the word, so who could blame him?
The story takes place in Greentown, a setting he has used for other novels over the years such as "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and which is based on his own real life hometown in upstate Illinois. It's a story of two young brothers in a quintessential 1920's small town who go through the ups and downs of typical Americana small town life complete with oddball misfit neighbors and a doting grandmother. But there are thrills in store when a murderer is found to be on the lose.
A page turner to be sure.
Audio Version of This book.......2007-07-03
This audio version is just awful! You can not hear the actors voices and so you turn it up a bit. Still some voices are audible and others aren't. Then the worst part...the special effects sounds/noises. They are so loud they scare the crud out of you and drown out everything else. They where so loud they shook the walls. I got as far as 10 minutes into the first disc and had to turn it off. I have hundreds of books on CDs but this is the worst I've ever heard. Buy the book again or buy some other audio book. This one stinks!!!
I live in Waukegan.......2007-06-25
Although today's Waukegan (aka Green Town) is going through a rebirth as I write this, it's easy to picture Washington, Glen Rock, St James and Gennessee as Roads and Avenues while reading Dandelion Wine. Ray's ode to Waukegan is written with a great deal of LOVE. On a sunny day after reading the book, I went to each place. Most of it is still standing, but the area needs a boost.
The basic premise is 8 year old Douglas Spaulding lives life in Green Town and each experience is new to him. The book, I think, made Nostalgia fashionable. Twilight Zone copied it with the episode Walking Distance, so did Stephen King in the novella The Body, and The Wonder Years was written with similar themes. I could be wrong, but it started here with Dandelion Wine.
For anyone wanted to escape life's stresses or think of a time long gone, Dandelion Wine is for you. If only childhood could be so magical.
Unlike other readers who grew up reading this, I read it for the first time this year. This will become one of those books I read regularly.
Uncork and Inhale the Heady Aroma.......2007-06-12
I cannot add much in review of this classic novel, but I will quote a few wonderful lines that may lead you to read the book. Bradbury is magic.
"And some days, he went on, were days of hearing every trump and trill of the universe. Some days were good for tasting and some for touching. And some days were good for all the senses at once. This day now, he nodded, smelled as if a great and nameless orchard had grown up overnight beyond the hills to fill the entire visible land with its warm freshness. Their felt like rain, but there were no clouds. Momentarily, a stranger might laugh off in the woods, but there was silence...."
