World-renowned fantasist Ray Bradbury has on several occasions stepped outside the arenas of horror, fantasy, and science fiction. An unabashed romantic, his first novel in 1957 was basically a love letter to his childhood. (For those who want to undertake an even more evocative look at the dark side of youth, five years later the author would write the chilling classic Something Wicked This Way Comes.)
Dandelion Wine takes us into the summer of 1928, and to all the wondrous and magical events in the life of a 12-year-old Midwestern boy named Douglas Spaulding. This tender, openly affectionate story of a young man's voyage of discovery is certainly more mainstream than exotic. No walking dead or spaceships to Mars here. Yet those who wish to experience the unique magic of early Bradbury as a prose stylist should find Dandelion Wine most refreshing. --Stanley Wiater
Book Description
The summer of '28 was a vintage season for a growing boy. A summer of green apple trees, mowed lawns, and new sneakers. Of half-burnt firecrackers, of gathering dandelions, of Grandma's belly-busting dinner. It was a summer of sorrows and marvels and gold-fuzzed bees. A magical, timeless summer in the life of a twelve-year-old boy named Douglas Spaulding--remembered forever by the incomparable Ray Bradbury.

Dandelion Wine.......2007-08-10
It was for my daughter. She likes to listen to books on tapes and CDs and read the book too. She was very happy with this item.
Not Bradbury's Best but a Fine Old World Novel........2007-07-30
This is the book I generally recommend to people who have not read Ray Bradbury before because it's not too complicated and yet still manages to have that spiritual, unearthly quality that all of his works are known for. And like all of his stories, this one is a bit on the wordy side. Ray is the king of description, but it would be only fair to say that he often gets carried away with too many details of surroundings and atmospheres that add nothing to the story but more words. On the other hand he probably gets paid by the word, so who could blame him?
The story takes place in Greentown, a setting he has used for other novels over the years such as "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and which is based on his own real life hometown in upstate Illinois. It's a story of two young brothers in a quintessential 1920's small town who go through the ups and downs of typical Americana small town life complete with oddball misfit neighbors and a doting grandmother. But there are thrills in store when a murderer is found to be on the lose.
A page turner to be sure.
Audio Version of This book.......2007-07-03
This audio version is just awful! You can not hear the actors voices and so you turn it up a bit. Still some voices are audible and others aren't. Then the worst part...the special effects sounds/noises. They are so loud they scare the crud out of you and drown out everything else. They where so loud they shook the walls. I got as far as 10 minutes into the first disc and had to turn it off. I have hundreds of books on CDs but this is the worst I've ever heard. Buy the book again or buy some other audio book. This one stinks!!!
I live in Waukegan.......2007-06-25
Although today's Waukegan (aka Green Town) is going through a rebirth as I write this, it's easy to picture Washington, Glen Rock, St James and Gennessee as Roads and Avenues while reading Dandelion Wine. Ray's ode to Waukegan is written with a great deal of LOVE. On a sunny day after reading the book, I went to each place. Most of it is still standing, but the area needs a boost.
The basic premise is 8 year old Douglas Spaulding lives life in Green Town and each experience is new to him. The book, I think, made Nostalgia fashionable. Twilight Zone copied it with the episode Walking Distance, so did Stephen King in the novella The Body, and The Wonder Years was written with similar themes. I could be wrong, but it started here with Dandelion Wine.
For anyone wanted to escape life's stresses or think of a time long gone, Dandelion Wine is for you. If only childhood could be so magical.
Unlike other readers who grew up reading this, I read it for the first time this year. This will become one of those books I read regularly.
Uncork and Inhale the Heady Aroma.......2007-06-12
I cannot add much in review of this classic novel, but I will quote a few wonderful lines that may lead you to read the book. Bradbury is magic.
"And some days, he went on, were days of hearing every trump and trill of the universe. Some days were good for tasting and some for touching. And some days were good for all the senses at once. This day now, he nodded, smelled as if a great and nameless orchard had grown up overnight beyond the hills to fill the entire visible land with its warm freshness. Their felt like rain, but there were no clouds. Momentarily, a stranger might laugh off in the woods, but there was silence...."

Book Description
Embarking on a new life, Zoe and her family journey west to the Nebraska Territory in the 1800s.
When Zoe and her family arrive at their claim, nothing distinguishes it from the miles and miles of surrounding prairie. Even after they build their soddie, the home can't be seen from any distance. Zoe has never seen Papa so happy or Mama so sad. But when she takes a trip to the small prairie town with Papa, Zoe sees something that might make a difference to their new soddie, and to Mama's life, too.

Dandelions.......2006-08-04
This is a book I would use to add to the list of the many books written by Eve Bunting.
Great story.......2006-03-20
This is a great introduction to the saga of the western movement. My daughter is almost 4...a bit over her head.
DANDELIONS by Eve Bunting.......2002-07-24
DANDELIONS is a very moving story. It does an excellent job in describing the struggles and bravery of a pioneer family. Although it doesn't detail why the family had to leave Illinois (their home), it does show readers that even back then parents may not have always agreed on family issues. Through the dialogue in the story it is apparent that the family wants their apprehensive, pregnanat mother to be happy, and they strive to make her so. The painted illustrations by Shed were very true-to-life and warm; they establish the setting and mood of each page. Further, the pictures helped define the characters by showing emotion through facial expressions and body language. Of course, those factors contributed in reinforcing the text. Despite the fact that the artwork has a warm fuzz to it (almost giving a surrealistic feel), attention to detail was definitely established, giving the story realism and life.
Dandelions.......2000-01-16
This beautifully illustrated(Greg Shed) picture book tells the story of a pioneer family settling in the Mid-West. Mama, Papa and their two daughters, Zoe and Rebecca have left the security of home in Illinois to settle on the Prairie. Papa and Zoe make a pact that they will help Mama feel better about living on the Prairie. After Zoe and her sister plant a patch of dandelions on the roof of their sod house, Mama agrees that their family is hardy and will bloom just as the dandelions are sure to do. This book, told from Zoe's viewpoint, is a touching recount of the feelings of the sodbusters. Would be very useful for primary teachers and media specialists in the mid-west states.
Dandelions, A Wonderful Book.......2000-01-06
My third grade class read Dandelions as a large group. We loved the pictures and the characters. It was very interesting learning about the way families settled the land. We decided that the book was showing us that families are like dandelions and they both grow with love and caring.
Book Description
This is the true story of an amazing family that lived with and loved kids who killed. This shocking and thought provoking account is the story of emotionally lost children and how some found their way back. Through the work by this courageous family comes this spellbinding metamorphosis of nine children. Their stories of survival and triumph break the unwritten code of silence about children without a conscience. Although it stems from the deepest of human suffering, each shining triumph will leave you uplifted and celebrating life.
Customer Reviews:
Thoroughly enjoyed this book!!!.......2007-01-26
In fact I had a VERY difficult time putting it down so that I could get some sleep!!! Although I could easily relate to many of the experiences discussed by Nancy Thomas, it was so neat to get a confirmation of my experiences with RAD kids and the system!!! Great going, Nancy!!!
Rivoting.......2006-03-16
It is an eye opener to the reality of living with deeply abused and disturbed children. The encouragement it gives to all of us who struggle with difficult behaviour in children is immeasurable, giving hope where there is none. Nancy and her family write so openly and honestly about their experiences sharing their triumphs over attachment disorder.I would highly recommend any who is involved with abused children to read this real life account.
Great book!.......2006-02-28
I liked this book because it helped me to understand how kids with attachment disorder might feel and think. It was interesting to get both sides of the story, too. I bought more copies to give to family members that are having a hard time understanding the disorder (two of my children also have a severe attachment disorder). Reading this book also helped me to know what kind of parenting is required to help these kids. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about an attachment disorder. It was reccomended to me by therapists and other mental health professionals. It's very easy to understand.
Excellent.......2006-01-16
Unfortunately, those that give this book a negative review are sadly mistaken regarding what is involved in RAD therapy. TRUE holding therapy is NOT holding a struggling child down while he or she screams in rage. Holding therapy is very gentle, where a child is held lovingly like an infant is. Mother and child make eye contact and mother sings or tells child stories. I have seen holding therapy and when a child is healing, it is a beautiful, powerful thing to all involved. Further more, although Nancy Thomas' techniques for parenting and therapy are non-traditional it is done with the child's safety as priority. Until you live it or work with it, you will never understand it. Do more research. Nancy Thomas may not be a scholar writer but she knows what she is talking about!
my gosh what a terrible writer!.......2005-12-12
If I passed this stuff in I would get an F. If someone writes this badly, they cannot be very smart. And the way she thinks kids should be treated is scary. There does not seem to be anything but her ideas in here, and she can't even write a paragraph.

Karen Kingsbury.......2007-07-09
Always great and my wife loves them...that's why I keep buying them for Christmas, anniversaries, her birthday, etc., etc.
Another winner from Karen Kingsbury.......2007-06-24
I enjoy reading fiction with a Christian theme, but don't like to be hit over the head with the message. What I enjoy about Ms. Kingsbury is that she is able to weave the message through the story in a way that is effective, but not so strident that she loses the average reader. This book is no exception.
I found nothing contrived about the storyline - people do lose custody of children as old as Joey, and it's heartbreaking for all concerned. I particularly liked the character of Allyson, the social worker, who while being forced by the "system" to follow the letter of the law also exhibited a sense of what was right and wrong. So many times the social workers are portrayed as non-caring bureaucrats.
I found every element of this story to be plausible, up to and including the ending. I enjoyed how Ms. Kingsbury built up to the conclusion, although it was certainly not a huge surprise. There is nothing that I would change about this book (big of me, I know!), and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good summer read with a nice, gentle Christian message.
Great Read.......2007-06-14
Like Dandelion Dust is a touching book that delves into the lives of the Campbell family. The Campbells adopted son's father is getting out of prison and wants custody. It's a heart-wrenching story that touches on a very sensitive subject of what is best for the child, Joey. It's definitely worth reading.
Good read.......2007-05-23
Karen Kingsbury is one of my favorite authors. I have to admit that this story is a bit over the top. There have been so many stories similar to this one it felt like I was reading something I had already read before.
Kingsbury's books are well written, have lots of emotion, are clean and appropiate for all age groups.
Good Service.......2007-05-14
I LOVED THIS BOOK!!!! It was awesome, I cried my way all the way through it! It came fast and in great condition! THanks!

A book to read over and over.......2007-01-16
A funny book about a lion for preschool through young readers. This was read over and over many times to my three children when they were younger and was one of their favorite books. I bought it this year for a gift for my nieces little boy.
Another super book by Don Freeman.......2007-01-10
This book is so cute. My son covers his ears as the part where Dandelion is not recognized by Jennifer the giraffe, in anticipation of his roaring voice. Another super book by Don Freeman. I wish there were more classic books like this one and his other books. It seems as though they have a moral to them and in this one, it's just to be yourself. Isn't that what we need to be teaching our children in these times? We read them over and over and I don't growl about it, I enjoy the books as well.
Another one of my favorites!.......2007-01-09
I use this book at school in teaching the children to like who they are and to know you do not have to dress in a certain way or wear you hair in a certain fashion to be considered special. The kids all love to hear the Dandelion story over and over again!
My 5 Year Old's Favorite Book.......2004-12-10
My 5 year old daughter takes this book out of the school library every week. Every once in a while we have to insist she gets something else because we're tired of reading it over and over. But it is a wonderful story with a very good lesson. I've decided to buy it so the other kids at school can have a chance to read the library copy.
Dandelion.......2002-12-13
I really like this book, because the lion is an great person who do what ever it takes just to make him look good or to make his fiends feel happy.

A Nice Book.......2007-09-06
This is a quick read on a great subject. You can't help but see yourself in Dandelion at some point in the book, so in that way it's quite moving. It took me a while to buy/read it (and I'm a Mike Dooley fan), but I'm really glad I did.
DANDELION, THE EXTRAORDINARY LIFE OF A MISFIT.......2007-08-06
This book, DANDELION, by Sheelagh Mawe is AMAZING! I ordered 5 copies -- and immediately gave them out as gifts (except for 1, which I kept!!!). We ALL
loved this book -- and -- I recommend it HIGHLY!!! It's a book that
can be read AND appreciated by people of ALL ages by how the KEY-TO-LIFE journey is revealed (WHAT WE THINK ABOUT -- WE BRING ABOUT!). It's a PERFECT
gift, too, for you Animal lovers!!! WF
What a Great Book.......2007-03-06
This book is great for all ages. Required reading for every single person. This book contains a very important message. Well written, a quick read, very powerful.
Excellent!!.......2006-08-16
The story is very touching yet offers a powerful meaning to life. It is a quick enjoyable read.
Fantastic story.......2005-09-16
This is a wonderful story, with so many life truths hidden in the story line. Its a short read, but one I will come back to numerous times.

Book Description
The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) is small by anyone's definition, with only about 300,000 members worldwide, but its impact has been widely felt. Unlike other historical dictionaries, the authors present a series of worldwide essays on Quaker theology, history, and practice as well as the lives of individuals who have made this faith their life. The entries prove the variety among Friends today and also gives a clear sense of despite their diverse membership and their periodic disagreements and divisions.

An Introduction to Quakerism (Introduction to Religion)
ASIN: 0754631583 |
Book Description
The last forty years has witnessed a 'golden age' of Quaker Studies scholarship, with the bulk of this work into the history and sociology of Quakerism being undertaken by scholars who are also Quakers. For the scholars involved, their Quakerism has both prompted their research interests and affected their lives as Quakers.
This book presents a unique study into Quakerism: it draws together the key theories of Quaker origins, subsequent history, and contemporary sociology, into a single volume; and it allows each of the contributors the opportunity to reflect on what led to the initial choice of research topic, and how their findings have in turn affected their Quaker lives. The result is a unique contribution to Quaker theory as well to the discussion on insider/outsider research. This book is invaluable to anyone interested in Quakerism, research into religion, notions of outsider objectivity within academia, and areas of theology, religious history and sociology in general.
Product Description
The Teeth of the Lion tells the story of the common dandelion, that remarkably widespread plant that is known, for better or worse, by just about everybody. Through a series of short essays, written in accessible language and a thoroughly engaging style, Anita Sanchez takes the reader on a journey through the natural history of the dandelion and its long association with humans. Joan Jobson s illustrations add important details and subtle accents that enhance this journey. Well adapted ecologically to spread into and thrive within disturbed sites -- such as the lawns, playgrounds, roadsides, and parking lots in which they are most often encountered today, and viewed as weeds -- dandelions also have had a lengthy, welcomed association with humans as medicine, food, and objects of ritual, magic, and folklore. The Teeth of the Lion will be a source of enjoyable, fascinating, memorable information of interest to all users. It will provide naturalists, wildflower enthusiasts, gardeners, interpreters, teachers, landscapers, and homeowners a better understanding of one of the most common, well-known, and perhaps underappreciated plants to be found anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Small book, big bite.......2007-05-17
The Teeth of the Lion conveys the fascinating story of the dandelion and considerably more.
Authoritative, yet never overbearing, this lively book provides the facts on dandelions while leading the reader to ponder knowledge gained and lost, the art and practice of medicine and just how our planet might fare in the future. An impressive scope for a little book about an underappreciated little plant.
Read this book and you won't look at dandelions or the world in the same way.
An enchanting and fascinating read, highly recommended for plant lovers of all walks of life........2007-03-07
Written by senior environmental educator Anita Sanchez, The Teeth of the Lion is the true story of the ubiquitous dandelion, a flower so ecologically adapted, flourishing in so many lawns, playgrounds, roadsides, and parking lots, that it is commonly perceived as a weed. Yet the dandelion has an extended history as medicine, food, and the focus of ritual and folklore. "...are dandelions bad? If forced to answer the question, I'd say that dandelions are a bad thing, an alien species, with many redeeming virtues. They're an unbelievably nutritious plant that heals the earth as well as people, they're medicine, and magic, and, yes, beauty... in the great scheme of the world's ecology, what's a few dandelions on a lawn?" An enchanting and fascinating read, highly recommended for plant lovers of all walks of life.

“Traci’s books… call my name and soothe my soul.” –Jane Kirkpatrick, award-winning author of All Together in One Place and A Name of Her Own
Customer Reviews:
Predictable.......2007-08-31
I will be honest. I just skim-read this book in about an hour and a half, because there was just not much plot to follow. I read the first book, and it was just okay. I was hoping this book would expand on the characters, but the characters are just shallow and immature. I really wanted to like this series. With that being said, it was not a bad little story, and actually kind of cute in spots, just don't expect much from it.
Author, Author!!.......2007-07-08
Traci DePree is a fantastic author in the religious fiction genre. She writes about what she knows, southern Minnesota. There is great comfort reading about your own area in a book. The first in the series, "A Can of Peas", is one that made me laugh and cry more than any book I've read. Ms. DePree has a writing style that is straight forward and to the point. She doesn't use complicated sentences or difficult words to understand. She is a phenomenal writer that I will definitely follow in the future.
Reality Check.......2007-02-06
Find something else to read! To compare this series equably with the Mitford series is an insult to Jan Karon. DePree's ideas are great, but she can not bring them to life. To open one of the Lake Emily books is to open a giftbox and find it empty. Too many characters and the main ones are so flat that it is hard to care about what is happening to them. I have had to read the series for my book club and it has been an eternity waiting for it to end. Is the Christian genre so desperate for writers to feed a hungry market that it would publish these one-dimensional stories?
The dandelions died.......2006-10-27
This book was disappointing. The main characters were flat. The reader cannot get to know them or care what happens to them. There are so many secondary characters that it is hard to keep everybody straight.
I also had trouble "getting into" the scene. A good book will draw me in, making me feel like I'm there, participating in it all. I could not get that from this book.
This is supposed to be a Christian book, but God is barely mentioned at all. He doesn't seem to have a place in their lives. It's like He is an after-thought.
I will not read any other books that follow this series.
A joy to read.......2006-05-12
Dandelions In A Jelly Jar is the second book in the Lake Emily series by Traci DePree. This time, the main part of the story centers around Trudy Ploog but we still get to visit with some of our favorite characters from A Can Of Peas.
Trudy moves to Lake Emily to teach at the local school and to be closer to Burt and her sister Mae. Life is not going to be easy for her because Trudy has a way of opening up her big mouth and causing a bit of trouble. Lake Emily will never be the same with Trudy in the mix.
I cant wait to read Aprons On A Clothesline to see where this story goes.
