ROMANTIC NEW YORK CITY: A GUIDE TO THE MOST ROMANTIC CLUBS, RESTAURANTS, BARS, AND HOTELS IN NEW YORK CITY is a guidebook to the most romantic venues and rendezvous in New York City, as selected by two sophisticated young New Yorkers. Graduates of New York University; neither wanted to leave New York after graduation. Enthusiastic Manhattanites, they relish the changing restaurant and club scene in the city as well as the unique quiet and picturesque spots throughout the city that are known only to New Yorkers.

Will King's essays and Jimmy Hahn's moody black-and-white photographs show just why each featured romantic location makes the cut. Will King's short, engaging essay about each romantic venue includes tips on how to find it, when to go there, why it is unique, what to do there, what to order, and who you will see there. ROMANTIC NEW YORK CITY contains fifty of Jimmy Hahn's beautiful, full-page black-and-white photographs of each romantic club, restaurant, bar, hotel, or outdoors location as well as numerous small "incidental" photographs of memorabilia associated with each featured venue.

ROMANTIC NEW YORK CITY is both an art book and a useful guidebook for lovers and romantics of all ages. Beautifully designed, the book is appealing to look at. It also includes street addresses, including cross streets, and phone numbers for each romantic location. ROMANTIC NEW YORK CITY will appeal to readers who are familiar with the venues it features as well as to those who merely wish to become habitues, at least temporarily, of the most romantic spots in the most exciting city in the world.

      1 out of 5 stars shlock quality.......2007-02-16

This was by far the worst quality purchase of the thousands of dollars in purchases i've made through amazon in the last few months. Once I removed the shipping plastic around the book and turned the first page, the binding on the package immediately cracked releasing the papers from the book. Plus theres only like 50 pages in this book total with various headings. The content is ridiculously elementary in the suggestions contained. A google search would have resulted in better reccomendations then were contained in this book. I can not emphasize enough what a wasted purchase this is.

Armed with my copy of this book and The RoMANtic's Guide, my wife and I were off to New York for a special romantic weekend. I couldn't have done it without these two books. My wife was amazed at the places we saw, slept and ate.

This book revives a romantic vision of New York that has been forgotten. It offers intimate insight into wonderful corners of space in New York. The writing is clever and descriptive and the full-page bleed photographs are dramatic and stunning.

Stunning photography and excellent writing. If only I had the money to visit all these places. I hope they write about other cities.

          Product Description

In this collection of natural-history essays, biologist Joan Maloof embarks on a series of lively, fact-filled expeditions into forests of the eastern United States. Through Maloof's engaging, conversational style, each essay offers a lesson in stewardship as it explores the interwoven connections between a tree species and the animals and insects whose lives depend on it--and who, in turn, work to ensure the tree's survival.

Never really at home in a laboratory, Maloof took to the woods early in her career. Her enthusiasm for firsthand observation in the wild spills over into her writing, whether the subject is the composition of forest air, the eagle's preference for nesting in loblolly pines, the growth rings of the bald cypress, or the gray squirrel's fondness for weevil-infested acorns. With a storyteller's instinct for intriguing particulars, Maloof expands our notions about what a tree "is" through her many asides--about the six species of leafhoppers who eat only sycamore leaves or the midges who live inside holly berries and somehow prevent them from turning red.

As a scientist, Maloof accepts that trees have a spiritual dimension that cannot be quantified. As an unrepentant tree hugger, she finds support in the scientific case for biodiversity. As an activist, she can't help but wonder how much time is left for our forests.

          5 out of 5 stars A life changing book!.......2006-08-17

This is one of those books you read and it can change your life. It's an intellectually beautiful read by a biologist who has spent her life studying the relationship of trees, forests, organisms, insects and animals and explains their connections simply. I think it's an important book such as Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring". It should be in everyone's library and read over and over.

5 out of 5 stars A series of lively, scientific essays on connections between tree species and the animals and insects which use it .......2005-11-08

Biologist Joan Maloof's ventures into the forests of the Eastern United states provide a series of lively, scientific essays on connections between tree species and the animals and insects which use it in Teaching The Trees: Lessons From The Forest. In leaving lab for direct environmental observation, Maloff's firsthand observations are lively and personal as well as scientific, exploring some of her favorite trees and their importance.

4 out of 5 stars A plea to keep the trees.......2005-10-11

In this slender volume of short essays, gracefully accompanied by the illustrations of 19th century naturalist and artist John Abbot, Maloof makes her impassioned plea for the lives of trees and forests by introducing them to us one by one.

Local rambles in Maryland provide the settings for her meditations on the lives and strategies of common species like beech, oak, maple, pine, and sycamore and under story trees like dogwood and holly, as well as bald cypress, walnut, redcedar, sweetgum and more. She breathes in the special qualities of "old-growth" air and mourns the lack of "grandfather trees," but most fascinating are the tales of interwoven life in the trees.

Many of these have to do with insects. Black locusts produce extra nectar, which feeds the ants and ladybugs that protect the tree from other insects. Except aphids, which the ants protect in exchange for their "honeydew," a euphemism for aphid urine. Ladybugs eat aphids, but there are still plenty of them and that honeydew is also the substance found all over your car when you park it under a tree, that stuff you probably call sap.

Exploring the teeming life of a tree (without the sycamore alone nine other species would be lost) Maloof, a biologist, distills numerous studies and traces the relationships among the insects, lizards, fungi, mammals, birds and people who obtain benefit from the tree. With a winning combination of science and poetry, Maloof makes her case for compassion and wonder.

5 out of 5 stars An environmental awakening........2005-09-08

When I was young, my neighbor told me that when she was a child in early 20th century Philadelphia, she thought that a tree was a particular kind of plant and that was that. Imagine her amazement the first time she left the city and discovered that there were what seemed to be an infinite variety of trees!

Joan Maloof takes the reader to the next level. She explains that far from each tree being merely a unique organism, that each tree is an entire ecosystem; indeed, that each tree is an interdependent universe of organisms that depend on each other in the most unimaginably wonderful and intricate ways.

I have spent my entire life in a rural area surrounded by trees, yet reading this book awakened a new curiosity, a new appreciation, a need to explore and learn that I never felt before.

Anyone will be enriched by reading "Teaching the Trees", but for the young person steeped in consumer culture who thinks that trees are for shade or lumber and that "bugs" are pests, it could be a life-changing experience, leading to an appreciation of the wonders of the forest, and perhaps a lifetime of study and enjoyment of the miracles of nature.

Studying the environment to gain insight into organizational behavior can be a fascinating exercise, with advocates from Jane Jacobs to Margaret Wheatley among those who have helped us envision the inherent possibilities. What We Learned in the Rainforest takes a similar but uniquely focused approach, as Mitsubishi Electric CEO Tachi Kiuchi and environmental advocate Bill Shireman tie development and sustainment of the rainforest directly to progressive practices of businesses such as Hewlett-Packard, Coca-Cola, and Nike. Employing an interesting format--each section begins with the authors describing an ongoing parachute descent into the rainforest in order to illustrate a specific principle--Kiuchi and Shireman explain how concepts such as feedback, profit, design, and diversity aid both their natural laboratory and their corporate examples. In the "Succession" chapter, for instance, they relate a rainforest's "four phases of life" to the cycle of innovation, growth, improvement, and creative destruction that is experienced by successful businesses. With the goal of drawing on nature's wisdom rather than drawing down its physical resources, the book advances a vision of sustainability en route to profitability that is as provocative as it is potentially practical. --Howard Rothman

          Book Description

What We Learned in the Rainforest presents a surprising new business principle: by applying strategies and practices gleaned from nature -- by emulating what it once sought to conquer -- big business can attain greater and more sustainable profits.

With clear, direct language and dozens of real-world examples, the authors show how a company can become, like nature, a complex living system that doesn't merely balance competing interests but truly integrates them. Examples from leading companies include Coca-Cola's use of diversity to drive sales; 3M's technique of managing for innovation; Coors's "all waste is lost profit" theory; and Shell's "industrial ecosystem" approach.

1 out of 5 stars Rainforest? These Guys Leave No Rainforest Behind!.......2004-02-07

Well, as soon as our species can survive on information rather than calories, this book MIGHT be of some use.

In the meantime, I find it a questionable, if not pathetic, apologia for megalomaniacal outfits like Coca Cola. Coke is a leader among the pack of those who apparently share a neverending pseudo-quest to combine illusory humanitarianism ("Coca-Cola does a great service because it encourages people to take in more and more liquids") with an unquenchable thirst for global market dominance ("until, eventually, the number one beverage on Earth will be soft-drinks-our soft drinks").

Can we contemplate the notion that 'unlimited growth' and 'sustainability' just might be mutually exclusive? Look up Ecological Economics, my friends. I beg you.

1 out of 5 stars Waste Neither Money Nor Time..........2002-08-08

This title of this book is an alluring theme but the book is, upon reading, virtually worthless. The analogy between a natural ecosystem and an economic system is clear enough and certainly not an earthshaking discovery - the rhythms, cycles, feedback mechanisms, etc., of any dynamic system are obvious similarities. But try to draw too much parallel between a natural system and a man-made system will inevitably lead to meaningless conclusions.

The author proposes a theory and then cites real-world examples that conform to that theory, sometimes rather forcibly. One example: In a section on information, the author said that the Indian auto industry was protected by high tariffs and that it led to its stagnation and decline. The author claimed that it was because the industry "failed to encourage the use of information." Anyone with the slightest knowledge of free market knows that lack of competition was the real cause. Does the rainforest add anything?

At another point, the author pondered on how the eye was (or was not) the result of evolution, and after postulating that incremental evolution was not possible for certain very complex biological structures (such as the eye), he cites the new notions of "intelligent design" and "downward causation". High sounding names, but how do they come about now?? Well, intelligent design must be because evolution is not...As to downward causation, it is, as illustrated by the rainforest, a series of adaptation. Wow, I thought that was evolution.

There was also a lengthy tirade denouncing the Wintel platform's dominance "threatening the infospace." This was taken right out of the annals of the cyberspace sour grapes.

Finally, although the author tries to appear apolitical and centrist, his liberal bias was all too clear - from his dismissive comments about Dick Cheney to his proposal of (government?) setting rules on how software must be created to be modular, with open interface, etc., etc. Whew!

This book was recommended by a number of big name business people, whose businesses got a fair bit of free PR from this book. My recommendation: waste neither money nor time on this book. Do enjoy the rainforest, but learn your business skills by studying the free market instead.

5 out of 5 stars Great primer on sustainable business principles.......2002-03-01

Bill Shireman and Tachi Kiuchi's book is an accessible, well written treatise on the economic and social power of applying natural principles to business. Unlike other books on industrial ecology, which can be heady and boring, Shireman and Kiuchi have broken down the natural cycles of the Rainforest into easily understandable principles and then provide brief case studies illustrating the application of those principles in a business setting. The book is a great primer on corporate sustainability.

The parallels in the authors' experiences with contemporary business issues are very compelling. This book offers a fresh perspective on some difficult issues, and can give managers a new way to think about their company's relationship to our world.

            Book Description

Deforestation is occurring at an alarming rate in many parts of the world, causing destruction of natural habitat and fragmentation of what remains. Nowhere is this problem more pressing than in the Amazon rainforest, which is rapidly vanishing in the face of enormous pressure from humans to exploit it. This book presents the results of the longest-running and most comprehensive study of forest fragmentation ever undertaken, the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project (BDFFP) in central Amazonia, the only experimental study of tropical forest fragmentation in which baseline data are available before isolation from continuous forest took place.

A joint project of Brazil's National Institute for Research in Amazonia and the U.S. Smithsonian Institution, the BDFFP has investigated the many effects that habitat fragmentation has on plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates. The book provides an overview of the BDFFP, reports on its case studies, looks at forest ecology and tree genetics, and considers what issues are involved in establishing

                  Book Description

This book focuses on the diverse impact of forest history in general, and of forest continuity, fragmentation and past management in particular, on the diversity and distribution of species. The implications for the conservation of biodiversity in forests are also addressed. Chapters have been developed from papers presented at a conference held in Leuven in January 2003. The emphasis is on temperate forests in Europe and North America, but the information may also be applicable to other regions or biomes.

                      Book Description

If you’ve never camped on a sandbar in the Congo or met rebels in the mountains of Mexico¡attended a wedding in Thailand or Christmas dinner in Bangladesh—hop on board. Here’s your chance to explore the rivers and forests of the world, meet some unforgettable people, and share their adventures.

A good story will take you to places you’ve never been and teach you things you didn’t know—especially when you put yourself in the hands of a master storyteller like Ben Mathes.

As an explorer and world health advocate, Dr. Ben Mathes has traveled the world since 1978; gotten himself into and out of predicaments, been surprised, excited, frightened, and most of all, enriched by the lessons he’s learned along the way.

He founded ROW (Rivers of the World), an international exploration and development agency that uses rivers to reach people in remote places, discover their needs, and help them solve their problems.
