2 out of 5 stars Way, WAY Out of Date.......2003-11-25

First off, this book feels like just another churned-out book in a series, and it turns out that's exactly what it is. That wouldn't be so bad, but the Culture Shock! books are intentionally banal so as to stay away from any hint of controversy.

Although 12 years may not seem like a lot of time (published 1992), it is almost 1/4 of modern Israel's history, so almost by definition this book is outdated. Imagine trying to read a book about the USA from the 1940s and having it be relevant today. That's kind of how it feels.

2 out of 5 stars Practically a waste of money.......2002-06-25

I lived in Israel from 1995-2000 and bought this book just before going over. I thought it might be good to buy the book anyway. Sadly upon getting to Israel in 95 I found much of the information was very out of date and was not much help at all in the "klita" (integration into society) process. There were many things that book left out that would be "olim" should know, but recruiters will not tell you or will whitewash when asked about. As for the great & powerful Israeli army, they may have had a lot of respect at one time, (i.e. the 1950s - 80s)but it seemed popularity was dying (in the years I was there), especially when you think of Israeli politics, religious fanaticism and the territories. Now it has even lost more of it's prestige. There are many other things in this book that could be challenged, but it would take up too much room on this review. I would tell would be buyers not to bother. Standard travel guides, and talking to friends already there helped more than the book did. Many things one will find out on one's one, whether one wants to or not.

5 out of 5 stars I'm ready to move to Israel........1999-04-02

This is the coolest travel book I've ever read! After reading it, I wanted to start packing my furniture and things (3 months early). Mr Winter shows you the vast differences between the Israeli and Western way of life, yet in such a manner that you already feel like you belong there.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and intelligent guide to being Israeli.......1997-08-12

Culture Shock! Israel is not so much a travel guide to Israel if you're looking for physical landmarks and tourist sites. It's a guide to the soul of Israel--its people, culture, and history. The guide explains everything from serving in the Israeli Defense Forces to immigrant society to casual wear. It explains how Israelis perceive the world and themselves, with much humor as well as interesting facts. At the end, there is a cultural multiple choice quiz in which you, the reader, are given a bunch of scenarios and asked to choose the best answer based on what you've learned in the book. And as a special treat, the book even throws in how to walk and talk like a sabra

I Am Happier to Know You is the story of the people, culture, sights and fragrances of Egypt and the Middle East viewed through the eyes and heart of a single, midlife woman. Concurrently, it's a memoir of the joys and challenges author Jeanne M. Eck embraced when, on wings of faith, she left her Western culture behind and moved to Egypt.

loved it, loved it, loved it...my kind of book....easy to read, extremely interesting & informative...if you have a desire to learn more about the muslim culture & to have a greater understanding of the people of egypt this is the book you must read. the author with her wit & charm has done a wonderful job at making you feel you are there with her sharing her experiences. will definately order more copies to give to my friends (there not getting my copy)who i know will think twice before critising the muslim culture & hopefully have a harder look at our own culture.

5 out of 5 stars I am Happier to Know You.......2006-03-26

Written with humor, honesty and genuine caring, I am Happier to Know You takes the reader into a rich and varied culture with social and political perspectives so necessary to our understanding of today's world. This story of a lone, American woman as she finds personal strength experiencing a totally new life is insightful and compassionate. I felt as if I were in Egypt. Her sense of humor took her through many trying circumstances, but brought with it acceptance and understanding of a country and a people she truly loves. I am Happier to Know You provides both learning and understanding of Middle Eastern customs through non-judgmental eyes and an inspiring, courageous story of personal growth.

4 out of 5 stars Easy to read.......2006-02-25

This book is written in a easy way to read, entertaining and informative in some parts but the writer was misinformed in some other parts. I am an Egyptian and while was reading some parts I was feeling like she was talking about another country than the one I know. Either she was misinformed as I said or didn't understand some aspects of the culture. Overall, it is a good book. At least she took the time to know another culture. I salute her.

4 out of 5 stars Love is the Answer.......2005-11-15

"I Am Happier to Know You" written by Jeanne M. Eck is a memoir of a journey within and without. Written with honesty and clarity Jeanne's voice offers the reader to experience Egypt through her eyes and heart. Her growth and wisdom expands in this faraway land and this growth and wisdom transcends the pages for all to grasp. Ultimately, her message is really very simple and beautiful, " Love is the answer, it is the answer to everything.

5 out of 5 stars I Am Even Happier To Know Jean Eck & Her Wonderful Book!.......2005-11-13

What can I say? Jean is so honest when she writes and I truly love this quality in her latest book "I Am Happier To Know You." As an expat living in Egypt, myself (for 7 years), I truly could not of said it any better than Jean. She captures every little detail of life in Egypt. Her indepth explanation of the sounds, smells, and tastes of Egyptian life is brought to life in-front of your eyes, as you read her book. At times, I felt I wasn't reading - I was just mearly watching her life unfold hear step by step and inch by inch. She has truly done the unknown and remarkable endeavours to create this book. Going were most people don't dare go; she went full force into a life of the unknown and came out to tell about it in "I Am Happier To Know You." I highly recommend this book to anyone that simply once to be able to let go of all you ever known but, just can't! Jean Eck makes it all come true for you in "I Am Happier To Know You."

                            Book Description

A Thousand Miles of Dreams is an evocative and intimate biography of two Chinese sisters who took very different paths in their quest to be independent women. Ling Shuhao arrived in Cleveland in 1925 to study medicine in the middle of a U.S. crackdown on Chinese immigrant communities, and her effort to assimilate began. She became an American named Amy, while her sister Ling Shuhua burst onto the Beijing literary scene as a writer of short fiction. They were both Chinese modern girls who sought to forge their own way in an era of social revolution and followed trajectories unimaginable to their parents' generation. The journeys of these extraordinary women spanned the twentieth century and three continents in a saga of East-West cultural exchange and personal struggle.

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Story.......2007-09-28

Amy was my Grandmother and I learned so much about my family history from Sasha's book. I loved the exploration of the truth between the stories that we heard growing up and Sasha's extensive research on the reality of the stories. I loved Sasha's book and consider it an important part of my roots.

                            5 out of 5 stars Exceptional.......2007-04-08

Professor Welland proves that extensive research and good storytelling are not mutually exclusive, which does not hold true for many of the academic books I have read. This book is unmistakably academic, with Welland adding a scholarly and critical perspective to the events she describes, but that is certainly not a bad thing. Layered with incredible detail, her graceful writing style made the stories of both her ancestors, and the search to reconcile their differences, extremely engaging. Certainly a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Chinese history.

I strongly recommend this book for anyone with Polish ancestry who would like to grasp a phase in the history of their nationality, as well as anyone who liked the storyline of Angela's Ashes. Part I is an amazing and shocking account of a family's endurance of dreadful hardships in the early 1900s in Poland and their eventual migration to Canada. Were the story embellished with more prose, it would be a Polish counterpart of Angela's Ashes! (and easily go on as a box office hit). I was constantly in awe of the determination and comradery of the women in overcoming astonishing obstacles in order to simply survive.

Scores of articles and books have been written about Mitterrand, before and after his death. In Memoir in Two Voices Mitterrand gets a chance to have the last word and "express my deepest thoughts on a variety of subjects." The book is a record of occasional conversations between the French leader and Elie Wiesel, the Nobel Peace laureate, and is the third Mitterrand book released posthumously (Interrupted Memoirs and On Germany, On France are the others).

2 out of 5 stars A Window on Their Conversation.......2000-10-16

This book is written in the format of a conversation between two friends, Francois Mitterand (former President of France) and Elie Wiezel (Nobel laureate). This format makes for easy reading, but tends to gloss over hard discussion of the interesting issues. On the upside, it rolls along very quickly, at the pace of conversation.

I had serious problems with this book. Both the dialogue and the concept of this book are incredibly arrogant. The supposed "conversation" has the air of a Doonesbury cartoon, with Gary Trudeau lampooning political figures-- except the authors do it to themselves. It is arrogant also because the authors presume that readers care about their opinions on everything outside of their specialty. Who cares about Mitterand's opinions on religion, Nature and childhood, except as they relate to his specialty (politics)? What makes his opinions on these subjects any more interesting than mine? He tends to oscillate between banality and a forced profundity. He tells readers that "courage isn't the absence of fear; it's being able to dominate your fear." True, undoubtedly; but common knowledge, commonly expressed. If this is the best he can do, this book should have been circular-filed by the publisher.

The format also contributes to this. The few times they stumble onto something profound, like the importance of names to a culture, they stumble right back off it. Wiezel is generally more profound in his musings-- of course, his reputation and living have been made by seeing deeper trends and implications in society. It is a shame, if only for this reason, that the book focusses on Mitterand. When discussing religion, Wiezel notes, "I can remember the first time I failed to put on the phylacteries. . . For me it was terrible, because I was so devout. But the world did not collapse under my feet. And yet, I had been convinced that if I committed such an act I would be struck down on the spot."

Both authors point out that they've never been psychoanalyzed. Perhaps this is the impetus behind the book. Mitterand was near death when this project was completed, and tells readers that he wishes to be understood. The authors know each other well, which makes for much more interesting reading because the interviewer knows what questions to ask. The downside is that some questions whose answers are already known to the interviewer but unknown to the reader may not be asked. Therefore, we need aperceptive and intelligent interviewer, which we luckily find in Wiezel.

The two obviously go over well-trod ground. This means that they don't explain their thoughts very well, knowing that the other understands it. This book could have used a good editor to say, "I don't understand this thought." At one point Mitterand says that "I'm interested in the kinds of questions religions pose . . . Fundamentally, I admit the existence of a principle, and of an explanation, but my mind falters at the forms of the explanation."

There were some interesting points in the book, but they were mostly incidental. For instance, for those who didn't already know, a strong pro-Israeli bent can be detected in Mitterand. Some of the "forward school" thinking about war that Mitterand displays in his dismissal of retreat in war characterized strategic thinking in France before WWI. The statement "peevishness, however, has never been a substitute for rage" could be straight out of Tushman's Guns of August.

The book does improve if you can get through the first chapter. The chapter on faith is better than the one on childhood, and the chapter on war is better still. The book is disingenuous, though, as Mitterand paints himself not as a human being, but as a saint forced to negotiate in this world. Sad, really, because he is an interesting, complex character, who stood in a unique position during a number of historical events. Ultimately, books can be found about all of the topics they cover that are much more interesting, in-depth, and profound.

After chapters on such topics as childhood and the meaning of faith, Mitterand says "I believe we should be strictly professional and talk only about what we know." This would have been a much better book if he had done so.
