Like a good naturalist or interpreter, this guide provides not only a concise way to identify the most common flora and fauna, but adds interesting facts and folklore. It will surely make the living things in and around Rainier very accessible, and provide even the most knowledgeable biologist/naturalist with enjoyable new information. Illustrations are detailed and beautiful, and the general information and references are an added bonus. And it all fits into your pocket! Great!

The problem with most field guides is that they've forgotten they are field guides and not coffee-table art books.
Not so with Joe Dreimiller's POCKET GUIDE TO THE PLANTS AND ANIMALS OF MOUNT RAINIER!
Sure, this book has plenty of pretty color pictures made by its three illustrators, but they are diagnostic illustrations, just like Roger Tory Peterson emphasized in his bird books. So, you have something pretty to look at but you also have something that will help you identify the common plants and animals to be seen in Mt Rainier National Park.
Pictures are nice, but after you've used the illustrations to identify an Elephant-head pedicularis, Golden-mantled ground squirrel, a Varied thrush, or a Mountain hemlock, Dreimiller tells you the field marks so you'll know what makes these things different from their closest relitives. That way, if you don't have his book next time, you've learned what distingushes each plant or animal from every other plant or animal.
And the help you get from this little gem doesn't stop there. Let's say you've used this pocket guide to identify a False hellebore [Veratrum viride]. Next time you're in the Park, hiking with a friend, and you spot it, you can say, "Oh! Look at that False hellebore! Did you know its botanic name means 'green plant with the black roots?'" And so you look at the roots and, "Wow! They're black."
For all the organisms in this book, there are not only field marks but an extensive list of notes to help you remember why each is so important to know.
Not only that, but there are descriptions of all the groups so you'll learn why mammals are different from birds which are different from amphibians. There is an extensive bird list for the Park including accidentals. And, unsual for this kind of book, there is a mammal list too. And to top off the list catagory, each habitat has a list of common plants as well as suggestions for places to walk.
Did I mention that Dreimiller's book is also pocket sized? How many field guides have you bought in recent years that don't even fit in the pocket of your daypack?
I also liked the short reference list at the end of the book, referring me to other helpful resources. The index is short, but complete.
Evidently Dreimiller worked as a ranger at Mount Rainier for a number of years and it shows. He knows his plants and his animals. All in all, I would reccomend this little gem to anybody who wants to know more about what they see while in the Park. And the best thing about this field guide is that it teaches you things that can be used elsewhere in the Cascades.
I write for a number of newspapers in the Seattle area and I'm pretty sensitive to writers who wastes my time trying to copy the prose of Muir, Leopold, Pyle, and all the other good nature writers. I liked this book because it tells me what I need to know without the usual cumbersome "awesome beauty of nature" rhetoric that encumbers so many field guides. Leave the literature for the coffee table. Take Dreimiller's book into the field.

An excellent guidebook to the Mount Rainier area. As a former Mount Rainier Ranger, I would recommend this book to anyone considering a visit to Mount Rainier National Park. The illustrations are beautifully rendered and the accompanying text is accurate and insightful. The book is small enough to fit in a daypack or take it along for a backpack along the Wonderland Trail.

Perfectly wonderful introduction to Southern Spain.......2007-04-24
This was a great guide for a recent trip to Spain; both I and my young daughter thouroughly enjoyed looking through the photos...sometimes when I couldn't find the book, I'd look in her room and she'd have fallen asleep with it in her hands--no doubt dreaming of adventures to come! The info within is limited to Andalucia, so be aware of this if your travels take you beyond the borders of Southern Spain.

Madrid Guides Compared.......2001-12-28
I am an experienced traveler (30+ countries) who is nearing retirement and plan to travel extensively, who has recently become obsessed about finding "good" guidebooks. So this review is a comparison of the books I looked at for Madrid.
I started with the Insight Guide. I was seeking to get background, history, etc. The Insight Guides seem to vary enormously from one to the next in both quality and orientation. I think they are good for an entire country if you are trying to decide where in the country or what parts you want to see. I thought the guide for Madrid was useless. It provided very little information about the city or the culture. It seemed to be best if you were planning on moving to Madrid and wanted to find out the differences between the various suburban areas. I suggest you forget this one.
I looked at the Mini-Rough Guide. I didn't like the format and it was too terse for my taste. In my opinion, Rough Guide still needs to produce a guide for Madrid that is a regular, not a mini Rough Guide. The LP Guide to Madrid seemed pretty mediocre. The stiff covers also made it awkward to use or hold open to a particular page. The information and descriptions were inadequate compared to some other guides. The Eyewitness Guide to Madrid is, I think, the best overall guide to Madrid. (Generally I prefer Eyewitness guides for City's much more than as a guide for an entire country.) The maps are good, the pictures of the food and other items are very helpful. The hotels and restaurant sections were pretty good, but not great. If you are looking for hostels, you will need the LP guide. Eyewitness does not give great historical depth, but it gives you some, probably enough for most tourists. Guide Books are not the best source for detailed historical and cultural information anyway. The Time Out guide was almost like a tourist's yellow pages, primarily a listing of hotels, restaurants, sites, services, etc. It had the best listing of restaurants and hotels and covered all price ranges. It wasn't as good as Eyewitness is describing the things to see and do.
I ended up getting the Eyewitness Guide to use while sightseeing, supplemented by the Time Out guide for picking hotels, restaurants and being able to look up things. Another reviewer recommended this same combination in order to visit Tapas bars. I'm not that much into Tapas, but I still think these two are the best combo.
Incidentally, the Spain Rough and LP guides Madrid sections do not cover Madrid as well as the Madrid-only guides. You are looking at a 60-page section, compared to the Madrid-only guides of around 300 pages length.

Looks good!.......2007-06-16
I got this little book a few weeks ago and it seems pretty helpful. There's a lot of information about the each specific area in costa blanca (especially the main ones, of course), which is good because in general Spain travel books, it's hard to find a lot. I think it will be useful, but I haven't taken the trip yet!

Living in Alicante now, I bought this guide before we moved here. It is really great. Compact and with lots of useful information. I recommend it even on my alicante-spain web site.

The only redeeming thing about this book was the map, otherwise save your money and buy something else. I believe this book was written in 1999. The pictures are laughable and the information is just not helpful.

Robert P. Watson has edited a brilliant tribute to the life and legacy of George McGovern. As a young man, Robert took the easy road to what turned out to be a life of self indugence, lust, power, greed, money and eventual brutality.
His rehabilitation is a testament to his belief in God and his strength and will to get back on the right road, the hard road.
He's made his peace with God, family, friends and former enemies and his good virtues and love have been rewarded with a second chance.
This book is a must read for those that have been and could be tempted into a destructive lifestyle and the friends and loved ones of those who find themselves trapped in the same circumstances.

I've known Robert Vidal for a very long time, first as a friend of my father and then my friend. After I read his book, I learned new things about him that opened my eyes to a new world so many unfortunate people must live in. This world is a world full of drugs, crime, and killing. This book is one of the most powerful I have read and influences to stay away from a life of crime. This book is not only a well-told tale, but it also teaches you that in life some decisions we make can turn our lives in a totally different direction. Very interesting book, I couldnt put it down........2006-04-04
Fantastic book. I read the entire book on a flight from NYC to LAX. The best part is you can hear Robert talking when you read it. Its written as if Robert is there telling you the story using his own words. That helps keep it real.
Its is how I would imagine I would write a book. I thought the cover was a little cheesy the first time I saw it(sorry Robert!)
However, it proves the line about judging a book by its cover. Probably the best true story I have ever read. Its an eye opening book into the world of cocaine and crooked law enforcement. Its probably just as true today as it was in the 80's and it teaches just how easy it is to get pulled into that world.
A MUST READ .......2006-04-01
This book is a must read. A true life story of a man who fell into a life of crime and violence, but paid the price with 12 years of his life in prison, and in those 12 years found the LORD and learned a skill which helped turn his life around. This book is a real inspiration for anyone who thinks it's too late to turn their life around. The book will keep you entertained,while teaching you a lesson. I have recommended this book to all my relative and close friends, and now I am doing the same to everyone how wants to read a good book.
A man's life.......2006-03-31
Of all the books I've read, and those are many this is the first in which I'm featured.
I grew up with the author Robert Vidal, and later while a police officer I became involved with Robert and his crew.
The Newark police department with it's abundance of unethical supervisors, blatant nepotism, and Newark's corrupt city goverment had taken a toll on me and I became associated with Robert Vidal's organization. Robert became a close associate, and I turned a blind eye to his operation. I got to know most of his crew and often went to discos on limousines provided by Robert. Most of the things he mentioned in the book are true facts, and need to be told.
When I read the book I found that It was written based on court testimony and it shows how the allure of the good life and drugs can ruin lives.
Bloodcaine is one of the best books I've read. The way Robert Vidal turned his life around is quite inspirational.
Today Robert is a chaplain who councels prisoners, and his life is a real inspiration to those who have the courage to turn their lives around.
This book is a must read for anyone who likes to read real life stories.

I gave this book 4 stars simply because there were some spelling errors but overall the book was a touching life story of a man who got caught up in a dangerous lifestyle and fell to the many temptations that life offers us. It's good to see that he turned his life around and is doing positive things, i for one am proud of him but if a lesson should be learned from this book it would be to learn from other peoples mistakes.

As a customer of Rob Vidal's(the author's)barbershop, I was intrigued overhearing him sharing some of his experiences with prison to keep kids off the street. When he told me he had a book coming out, I couldn't wait for its release. When I purchased his book, I read a chapter a night. Once I got to the fifth chapter, I couldn't put it down. If you are entertained the Sopranos, Scarface or any other mobster show or movie, definitely pick up this book. After all this is the real thing.

I personaly have the pleasure of knowing the author.Like I stated earlier, this book is the real deal. Not a movie,unfortinately my friend (Rob)had to experience prison life. But Rob turned a negative expererience to a positive one. I can understand the reason why the author would be pulled in to a uderworld lifestyle. I personaly have been tempted by the lifestyle,but books like this make you think twice. GOD BLESS Mr. Vidal

Frustrating..........2002-12-04
It is truly unfortunate that such a compelling story was so poorly written. I don't quite understand how a publisher would put out any book without having an editor cut through the grandiloquent rhetoric and eliminate what is unimportant. As an avid reader, I was disgusted by the countless typographical and grammatical errors found in this book. Apparently no one proof read this one! It is also a real crime that so many good vocabulary words were used in improper context. I'm giving this book 2 stars simply because the story itself is intriguing. However, the writing is lacking sincerity and true depth. Especially the psychiatric evaluation he goes through in the genesis of the book. I live in the local area where the "writer" (I use this term loosely) lives, which is why I was motivated to read this book in the first place. I wish him a lot of luck. However, if you're [a stickler] about the written word as I am.... don't bother with this one. It becomes more and more frustrating with each page you turn! For much better reading, try these real-life Mafia stories: "For the Sins of My Father" by Albert DeMeo or Nicholas Pileggi's "Wise Guy: Life in a Mafia Family", which is the book that the film Goodfellas is based upon.
