    Book Description

    INTRODUCTION

Perched on a series of extinct volcanoes and rocky crags, EDINBURGH enjoys a dramatic natural setting unrivalled by any other major European city. Arrive in the very heart of town - either by day, with an east wind tugging at the flags that seem to fly from every building, or by night, when floodlights float grand architecture above the streets - and you're at once gripped by Edinburgh's romantic historical essence, where ramparts and ridges, turrets and tenements crowd the eye. One native author of genius, Robert Louis Stevenson, declared that "No situation could be more commanding for the head of a kingdom; none better chosen for noble prospects".

In its layout and, many would argue, in its personality too, Edinburgh is divided into its Old Town and New Town, inscribed together on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The former, perched on the spinal ridge leading down from the majestic cliff-girt Castle, is often dark and mysterious, and still predominantly medieval; the latter, with its graceful Georgian terraces and Grecian architecture, is a planning masterpiece of the Age of Enlightenment, when Edinburgh was Europe's hotbed of intellectual endeavour. The Old Town swirls with gory tales of body-snatchers - crowded with Gothic detailing, its looming medieval housing and historic facades lend a very distinctive appearance and atmosphere - while the New Town, with its douce lawyers and canny bankers, captures the capital's deeply dyed respectability. Being a relatively small city, with a population of under half a million, there are also marked contrasts between the closely packed grandness of Edinburgh's centre and the grim, underprivileged housing estates of the outskirts, as portrayed on the big screen in Trainspotting - rarely seen by visitors, but still very much part of the modern city.

A royal capital from its earliest days, Edinburgh's status took a knock when James VI of Scotland left the city for London in 1603 to take up the British throne as James I. Just over a hundred years later, the Scottish parliament also disappeared as Westminster assumed control, and while Edinburgh never lost the style, appearance and trappings of a capital city, its self-importance rang hollow for many. However, the return of the Scottish Parliament to Edinburgh in 1999, after nearly three hundred years of rule from London, has lent renewed vigour to the political, commercial and cultural scenes, and Edinburgh is taking the opportunity to prove itself a dynamic, influential and thoroughly modern European capital. The recent opening of the new National Museum of Scotland, the redevelopment of Leith docklands, the rapid erection of new homes and offices in various parts of the city and the anticipated appearance of the architecturally ambitious Scottish Parliament building, due to be unveiled in 2003, are all contributing to this upturn in the city's vitality and spirit.

Above all, Edinburgh is a cultured capital, in part due to its rich literary and artistic connections, but also thanks to the unique creative outpouring of the Edinburgh Festival, the largest celebration of the arts in the world. The event draws around a million visitors to the city each August, and generates a carnival atmosphere matched only by the much shorter but even more boisterous celebrations at Hogmanay. Edinburgh also maintains a vibrant cultural life throughout the year, with innovative theatre, energetic clubs, live music and heavyweight literary and artistic events. The social life of the city has been equally enlivened in recent years: a number of stylish new Modern Scottish restaurants, which use traditional local produce such as venison and salmon to create innovative new dishes, have begun to earn Edinburgh recognition on the culinary map. Long known as a great drinking city thanks both to its brewing and distilling traditions and its distinctive howffs (old! pubs), Edinburgh now boasts a host of stylish bars and a thriving café culture, fuelled mainly by the presence of three universities, plus several colleges, which ensure a youthful presence for most of the year - a welcome corrective to the stuffiness which is often regarded as the city's Achilles heel.

    4 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-09-06

We just got back from our visit to Edinburgh today. We had such a great time and this book went everywhere with us. I referred to it often. And the maps in the back of the book were really good, too.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful !!!.......2001-06-13

Even though you won't find pictures inside this little book, that problem can be easily solved bringing a camera to your trip to Edinburgh, and/or buying some postcards. Inside this guide you will find a lot of useful information (anything you could need to know). The maps are very clear; it gives you some good advises about when to go to the Scottish Capital; and the prices you will find here are essential (specially if you want to find cheaper places to sleep). I enjoyed my stay there, and without any doubts I would like to visit this beautiful city again. You will be impressed with your first sight of the Edinburgh Castle, and believe me, you would like to read this guide from the start until the end.

5 out of 5 stars Great guidebook - we loved it!!.......1998-07-25

We used this little book all the time on our trip to Edinburgh. We had a great trip, it sure is a beautiful city and nice people too. We found the restaurants and hotels recommended were good. We would recommend this book to anyone going to Edinburgh. We hope to go back for the festival one day.

Whether kids want to recite the Pledge of Allegiance or respectfully decline, this straightforward and playfully illustrated guide clears up what the pledge really means--word by word, and line by line.

Two pledge-loving literacy experts (Michael Sampson and Bill Martin, Jr.) and one polite pledge-abstainer (Caldecott Honor-winning illustrator Chris Raschka) have come together to explicate America's time-honored oath in plain, kid-friendly language: "I pledge (A pledge is a promise) allegiance to (Allegiance is loyalty) the flag (A flag is a symbol that stands for a place, a thing, or an idea. Making a promise to a flag usually means the same thing as making a promise to whatever the flag stands for.)." Sampson and Martin's annotations adequately convey the essential meaning behind the words, although understandably less so in the thornier sections: "under God (Many people believe that a democracy is a reflection of how God thinks--every single person is important.)"

I Pledge Allegiance also covers some of the history behind the pledge and the flag, but what kids will probably remember best--aside from the pledge itself--is Raschka's clever, winning collage work, which somehow manages to sum up ideas like liberty, justice, and God with a few quick strokes and scraps. (An 18-by-24-inch flag poster is included with the book.) (Ages 4 to 8) --Paul Hughes

        Book Description

"Finally, here's a picture book that helps young children move beyond rote recitation of the Pledge to find meaning in its language. This is the book parents and teachers have been waiting for." — BOOKLIST (starred review)

        "I led a pigeon to the flag" . . . "and to the wee puppet" . . . "one
nation, and a vegetable" . . . What was that again? Children in the United States have been reciting the Pledge of Allegiance since 1892 — and for about that long, they've found its big words confusing. Now, beloved children's book author Bill Martin Jr (BROWN BEAR, BROWN BEAR, WHAT DO YOU SEE?), fellow literacy expert Michael Sampson, and Caldecott Honor-winning artist Chris Raschka give America's children a hand, and explain this patriotic poem once and for all. A new paperback edition offers notes and suggested activities to help parents and teachers make this book even more interesting to and fun for children.

I think this is a nice book to teach a child the pledge of allegiance and to explain to them what the pledge means. This book breaks down the meaning of each word and explains them in a way that children can understand. It gives the history of the pledge, a little about the flag, what to do while saying the pledge and touches on what this great country is all about. From other reviews I have read, it appears that Francis Bellamy, who authored the pledge, did not include the line "...under God". Nonetheless, it was included in this book and is the version of the pledge that I recited every morning during my school years...and it is the version I will teach my daughter.

5 out of 5 stars I Pledge Allegiance by Bill Martin Jr.......2004-02-07

Very well-written book. It could use more historical information about the topic addressed. For example, the early Pledge of Allegiance was the origin of the stiff-arm salute. The Pledge was written (1892) by Francis Bellamy, cousin to an infamous author of the time, Edward Bellamy, and they were both self-proclaimed socialists in the Nationalism movement and promoted military socialism. They wanted government to take over all schools and impose robotic chanting to flags. The Pledge was the origin of the salute of the National Socialist German Workers Party. American socialists (Edward Bellamy teamed with the Theosophical Society) also bear some blame for German socialism's notorious flag symbol, which evolved into overlapping S-letters for socialism under the National Socialist German Workers Party. The Pledge's early salute was not an ancient Roman salute, and the 'ancient Roman salute' myth came from the Pledge Of Allegiance. It is amazing that books don't examine the issue of whether the pledge should be dropped entirely, especially for young children in government schools. The socialist dogma led to the socialist Wholecost: 60 million dead under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; 50 million under the Peoples' Republic of China; 20 million under the National Socialist German Workers Party. It might be the most tragic part of world history.

        3 out of 5 stars Noble try........2003-01-12

The goal--nicely attempted--of breaking down each line of this too-difficult-for-the-kids-who-have-to-say-it speech falls short.

While they explain the large words in kid-friendly phrases and credit Francis Bellamy, they make the significant omission of the fact that Bellamy DID NOT write the phrase "under God," and that it was added without his permission. The text says, "Many people believe that a democracyis a reflection of how God thinks..." without mentioning that the pledge, in its current form, misquotes its author.

A book that is designed to clear things up should be more accurate. Nonetheless, the illustrations are eye-catching and the language accessible to kids. It's a good idea to give them a better understanding than their often-quoted, "I led the pigeons to the flag..."

5 out of 5 stars What Our Pledge Really Means............2002-10-05

Every morning millions of children stand and face the flag, place their hands over their hearts, and recite the Pledge of Allegiance. But what do these 31 words really mean? Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson have taken the pledge apart, and explained each word (pledge: A pledge is a promise), or phrase (one nation: Our states and territories have bonded together to form one nation. One nation means one country), in simple, kid-friendly language. Add to that some history, fun facts, witty asides, and the clever artwork of award winning illustrator, Chris Raschka, and you have the makings of an engaging, entertaining, and informative book. Perfect for youngsters 6 and older, I Pledge Allegiance is a creative and straightforward look at the meaning behind America's most often recited words, and works well with Syl Sobel's Our Pledge Of Allegiance.

        1 out of 5 stars Pure Propaganda.......2007-06-22

I leafed through this book at a hotel gift shop one day, expecting to find a history of the pledge, or perhaps some interesting facts and trivia. Instead I found an agenda-pushing piece of propaganda. The book includes numerous quotes from George W. Bush and clearly displays a Christian agenda. One of my favorite quotes from this little book is "And although we, in times of peace, disagree and engage in loud debate about whether to express our faith in the public arena...we all rally in the Great Throne Room of the Almighty when tragedy strikes and our hearts are humbled by fear." I think my fellow atheists would agree that such a statement would be laughable if it wasn't so frustrating and irritating. And yes, the author did use the phrase "the Great Throne Room of the Almighty", whatever that is.

Which brings me to my next point. If you can get past the religious and political slants to this book, you will surely be appalled by the horrendous writing. I Pledge Allegiance: A Recommitment to America includes such glorious prose as "Dignified men uncover their heads in obeisance, and ragamuffins stand at attention when she [the American flag] passes by" and "The open wounds of oppression still oozed the blood of the patriots".

A quick look at the copyright page will give readers a clear indication of the publisher's agenda. "Our purpose at Howard Publishing is to: Increase faith in the hearts of growing Christians, Inspire holiness in the lives of believers and Instill hope in the hearts of struggling people everywhere. Because He's coming again!"

I thought I was going to look through a book about an American tradition, but instead all I got was a right-wing bible-thumping treatise on the importance of submitting to the government and glorifying god. Unless you are a hardcore conservative evangelical Christian, I recommend you don't go anywhere near this propagandistic bit of tripe.

        4 out of 5 stars obvious.......2002-10-22

        obvious but useful
If you want to help your children understand the meaning of the pledge of allegiance, that's the book you need. The pictures are okay, but I would prefer more pictures and less text.
The story of the pledge is missing.

5 out of 5 stars Struggling to be a Big Man.......2003-04-19

One of the most horrifying aspects of this tale, a horror story, is the apparent blitheness with which these ordinary people entered into an enterprise that ultimately yielded them hundreds of years in prison.

It goes like this: you meet an old navy buddy for drinks and he tells you he's got a business proposition for you. He admits it's a little illegal, but notes too the chances of getting caught are slim. So it makes good business sense-low risk/reward ratio, opportunity galore, and anyway you've sort of been at loose ends since retiring from the navy. Heck, you've got to be bold and take some risks to get anywhere in this world.

Or it might go like this: you're a young man and you admire and respect your dad. Nothing unusual in that-he's your dad! He was in the navy and he wants you to follow in his footsteps, so you do. And he says he'll pay you good money for classified documents-sure it's a little risky, but if you want to be a Man you have to take a risk now and then. Or, you could live your life as a wimp. It's your choice. So that leads to the most bone-chilling scene in the horror story: Dad smirking and wise-cracking while his son, his own and only son, is gets life in prison. Well, 25 years, but to a 22-year-old, that's life.

Howard Blum did a lot of research for this book: countless interviews, reams of technical documents on law and espionage and naval procedure, letters. But it doesn't read like some legal tract or academic research project. It reads like a B movie script, tawdry and melodramatic, with much attention given to the day-to-day problems of international spies and their families: the alcoholic wife, the wayward children, the ... struggle for respect. And when it's over there is the melancholy realization that the alcoholic wife and the wayward children were the lucky ones, if you can call it that. They avoided the lure of the psychotic monster at the center of the drama. The son was next luckiest. I read that he got out on parole after 15 years.

              5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book!!!.......2004-06-11

What an excellent board book! Star Spangled Baby did a super job with the wonderful pictures of patriotic images and really adorable kids!!!! EVEN BETTER than "O Say Can you See...", which is saying a lot since my children (aged 5, 3 and 1) enjoyed that book as well! Every child (and adult!) should be taught the Pledge of Allegiance - what a super way to explain what we're talking about. Also worth checking out is Star Spangled Baby's dvd "Yankee Doodle Days"! My kids were glued to the t.v.!!!!!!!!

              5 out of 5 stars I pledge.......2004-11-07

The author, June Swanson is a historian with the pictures done by freelance artist Rick Hanson. I Pledge Allegiance consists of forty pages with the first printing completed in 1990. This is a children's book offering easy to understand background on the history of The Pledge of Allegiance. The idea behind the book is to help children learn more about what they are reciting daily in their respective classrooms.

The book begins with the 1880s as Henry Ford is building a buggy that runs on gasoline and electric lights coming into homes. Most of the pages contain a paragraph with a matching image, such as the skyscraper that stood eleven stories high being built in Chicago. Next the frontiers were becoming States. In 1888 there was a children's magazine called, the Youth's Companion that was delivered weekly through out the United States. " It was filled with adventure stories".

The text within these pages has the key words to learn in bold - pledge, allegiance, Republic, Nation, indivisible, liberty and Justice. While the first four words were used within the same page to make comparisons of the meaning, the others needed one to two pages to guide the students. Republic was explained as a kind of government where everyone can vote with Nation being another term for country. The illustrations show the students in the classroom, people voting and the White House. Indivisible is when something cannot be divided or pulled apart. The illustration shows a war between the northern and southern states as an example.

Most of this was difficult for my son to absorb, partly due to his disability and also he was not interested in learning this in one session. It helped to go over a few pages in I Pledge Allegiance daily so he could comprehend it fully. The students in the book all knew that liberty meant freedom and then learned that Justice was about being fair with the same laws for everyone. " The children now understood that they were promising to help the government of the United States give freedom to all and treat people.

Deploying Oracle applications in any organization is an enormous task, and Oracle Financials Handbook should be considered prerequisite reading for any technical or business process specialist involved in such a project. The applications provide core business processes based on Oracle Corporation's database architecture, and the book discusses some of the most popular applications in the suite.

The book opens with a brief executive summary of Oracle Financials. The authors place financial applications in perspective, explaining where they fit into the overall Oracle Applications strategy and what the benefits are of choosing them for core business processes. This section also presents some of the important organizational choices you must make at the outset of deployment.

In the middle section of the book, the authors discuss the modules: general ledger, receivables, payables, asset management, purchasing, inventory, order entry, and others. The General Ledger module forms the core of the strategy and is discussed in great detail. The book provides plenty of flow diagrams to explain each module. The authors devote an additional chapter to budgeting and allocations, and address different accounting models.

Oracle Financials Handbook closes with technical details on deploying Oracle Financials in an enterprise. The entire computing environment is considered in this discussion, which includes information on customizing and modifying the modules to meet your needs. The final chapters cover project management and training issues that you need to work through. --Stephen Plain

5 out of 5 stars OCP Advisor's recommended reading for 11i OCP exam.......2007-10-07

OCP Advisor advises his blog readers at ebizocp dot blogspot dot com on study materials, preparation tips and exam experiences for 11i OCP exams.
OCP Advisor recommends the Oracle Financials Handbook as a must read to review your concepts and use the book to prepare flash cards and exam cram checklist. While a handbook cannot replace user guides and other documentations, it serves as an excellent tool to revise the fundamentals tested in the certification exams. The book should be undergoing a makeover pretty soon as Release 12 introduces radically new features for the Oracle Financials foundation. Read more about R12 at oracler12 dot blogpsot dot com. 1 out of 5 stars Amazon doesnt have this book and did not deliver after 2 months too!.......2006-04-29

I have tried to buy this book from Amazon. When buying it says it will ship in 2-3 weeks, but even after two months Amazon keeps mailing that it would still be delayed by a month. Be careful while buying this book from amazon, as in my case the purpose is finshed before i even got the book.

4 out of 5 stars Might be ok but..........2001-07-02

I bought this book because I was trying to teach myself enough to become a Financials Developer. This still MIGHT be the right book for me. However, this is not a step by step guide to the installation. In addition, the book assumes some familiarity with accounting systems.

1 out of 5 stars It's not a handbook, just an brief overview.......2001-05-16

We should appreciate that this is the first book published on market talking about Oracle Financials. However, this is the book that contains only general introduction. It doesn't have any detail information either for functional users or technical persons. As an Oracle Financial developer with many years of experience, I don't get any useful information out of it. May be it's good for somebody who don't know Oracle Financials at all.

3 out of 5 stars Worth Reading Once.......2000-01-03

I must appreciate the efforts of David and Graham to come out with such a book. Those who are used to read Oracle Apps Help and other documentation may not find some thing appealing. The authors have tried to mix functional concepts and some technical info with practical Do's and Don'ts. So may be they are not able to satisfy both to the fullest. This obviously is not possible in single book (in first edition too). Still I would expect the authors to include more of Tips that are not documented and extend the content to include manufacturing, HR and CRM to meants meant for Oracle Applications. This book is definitely worth reading once for all levels of professionals !
