This unique Colorado landscape is beautifully represented in the illustrations of Helle Urban, as the rhyming verse and expository text of Louise Whitney defines those images and expands our understanding of the Rockies, Blue spruces, Springs, and Yucca plants that paint this land. An excellent addition to our state alphabet book series, C is for Centennial entertains as it educates and its multi-tiered format makes it accessible for readers of all ages and at all elevations.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Book about Colorado!.......2002-10-19
"C is for Centennial" by Colorado native Louise Whitney is a wonderful and informative book about the beautiful state of Colorado-written in the alphabetical letter format. This delightful book celebrates Colorado's 100 plus years of statehood with rhymes and facts about selected Coloradoans, historical landmarks, natural resources, and even the state song. The text is creatively and well written, the corresponding illustrations are well chosen, complementary, and beautifully done, and the entire book is a treasure to read. Each new alphabetical letter that is introduced is so interesting that you want to immediately turn to the next page to see what the following letter represents!
Many of the well-known sites (especially to visitors of the state) are represented, such as Mesa Verde, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, Four Corners, and the Royal Gorge. But you will be surprised by the numerous additional facts about Colorado that you didn't know about such as herbal teas, the poetess who wrote "America the Beautiful", rodeos, the Pony Express, and even bicycles! Bravo to Louise Whitney for her authorship and extensive knowledge and to Helle Urban for her lovely and life-like illustrations throughout the book and the cover. You can really see in reading Whitney's creative work that she holds Colorado close to her heart.
This book is not only for children of all ages; adults will also enjoy the illustrations and facts about Colorado. It is a real treat to sit back and read about a state well traveled and loved by many. "C is for Centennial" is a splendid book that needs to be in homes and on the shelves of school and community libraries. It will prove to be a valuable resource book for students who may be assigned the task of writing a state report in their classrooms.
Beautiful Book about Beautiful Colorado.......2002-10-19
This book is just wonderful. I loved reading it and enjoyed the illustrations. The illustrator got the feel of Colorado just right. Younger children will love the rhyming couplets, and will try to memorize them on the spot. Middle school children will find the sidebar texts interesting and full of fun facts about Colorado. As a Colorado resident, I especially enjoyed discovering the places and people the author featured. As an educator I feel this book would be a great addition to children's non-fiction collections at home and school and will appeal to kids ages 5-14.

Book Description
Since 1976 newcomers and natives alike have learned about the rich history of the magnificent place they call home from Colorado: A History of the Centennial State. In this revised edition, co-authors Carl Abbott, Stephen J. Leonard, and Thomas J. Noel incorporate more than a decade of new events, findings, and insights about Colorado in an accessible volume that general readers and students will enjoy.
The new edition tells of conflicts, new alliances, and changing ways of life as Hispanic, European, and African American settlers flooded into a region that was already home to Native Americans. Providing balanced coverage of the entire state's historyfrom Grand Junction to Lamar and from Trinidad to Craigthe authors also reveal how Denver and its surrounding communities developed and gained influence.
While continuing to elucidate the significant impact of mining, agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism on Colorado, this new edition broadens its coverage. The authors expand their discussion of the twentieth century with several new chapters on the economy, politics, and cultural conflicts of recent years. In addition, they address changes in attitudes toward the natural environment as well as the contributions of women, Hispanics, African Americans, and Asian Americans to the state. Dozens of new illustrations, updated statistics, and an extensive bibliography of the most recent research on Colorado history enhance this edition.

The Best of its Genre.......2007-08-03
This book was used as a text book in one of my history classes at CSU back in the mid 80s. I kicked myself later on after selling it when I graduated. I never did consider this book to be a "text" book, but a highly enjoyable factual account written with precision and accuracy. I was only slightly disappointed not to be able to find the 2nd Ed., which is the one I read, but bought the 4th Ed. There are some subtle changes, but changes I did notice. Excellent, excellent book!

Book Description
In 1616, as the last warm days dwindle in the north Atlantic, the men on an English whaling ship prepare to head back toward home. But there is one exception among them: the quiet, headstrong Thomas Cave. For Cave has bet the rest of the crew that he can spend a winter on this Arctic island. Alone.
His shipmates sail away, the days shorten, and the cold weather moves in. Thomas Cave faces months of darkness, ice, and blizzards. He has nothing to his name except his rations, shelter, and a journal—a record in case he doesn’t survive to tell his story. But nothing so threatens the willful sailor as his own mind: he is haunted by the remembrances of another life and a lost love. From his post at the edge of the known world, Cave sees his own past, and begins to reflect on man’s relationship with God and the wilderness.
A beautiful, ghostly tale, The Solitude of Thomas Cave brings us back to the beginning of the modern world, in a story infused with the violence, power and beauty that define both man and nature.
Customer Reviews:
Simple Theme and Storyline, Intricately Woven Subthemes.......2007-06-09
Although it may seem a bit Robinson Crusoe-ish, this novel is one of the more intelligent and thought-provoking books I've read in a long time. It seemed to especially hit home for me as an occasional solo-traveler. At the heart of the story is a whaler named Thomas Cave who wagers on being able to survive a winter on Svalbard island and that his colleagues on the Heartsease will honor his wager and return to find him in a year.
Beneath the numbing and bleak story of Cave's survival lie various themes that I think the author wants the reader to consider.
- what do we make of personal relationships?
- how do we deal with memories, especially painful ones?
- do we suspect and isolate people because of our perceived fears of them, or rather internal fears that are merely the works of our mind?
- how do we deal with the environment around us? does it necessarily take an experience like Cave's to help us realize the environmental damage of some of our routine actions?
I feel that I've been better able to appreciate this story upon completing it. It seems to me that one can only truly appreciate and understand the value of Harding's work after reading all 237 pages of the book.
Definitely a worthwhile read.
THINK IT OVER.......2007-05-09
BEFORE MAKING A RASH COMMITMENT CONSIDER ALL THE RAMIFICATIONS. THOMAS CAVE DID NOT!
a novel of grandeur and profound sorrow.......2007-04-18
Be forewarned! This is not "a bewitching ghost story" (the blurb on the back cover.) There is nothing light or inconsequential about this novel; it is difficult and at times brutal and painful, full of grandeur and profound sorrow. But then, you can't speak truthfully about human nature and human history without these qualities.
This book is an intense experience which also illuminates a brief but important period in history: whaling was perhaps the first episode in modern expoitation of the natural world and a paradigm of what was to come.
Ms. Harding's imagination of the central character is commanding and even awe-inspiring, as is her writing.

Book Description
Traditional accounts of whaling celebrate exotic locales and dangerous exploits but shed little light on the lives of the men who went to sea. Rites and Passages places sailors at the center of a social history of whaling and explores the ways in which the history of the sea and the history of the shore have intersected. Drawing on the evidence of ship logs and sailors' letters and journals, Margaret S. Creighton examines American whalemen during the industry's peak--the mid-nineteenth century--and argues that whaling life and culture were shaped by both the American mainland and by the exigencies of ocean life. Unlike other accounts of seafaring, this work brings gender into the maritime equation, not only with a discussion of the ways that women figured in this male-dominated world, but also with an examination of the ways that seafaring served as a rite of passage into manhood. Professor of History at Bates College, Margaret Creighton is the author of Dogwatch and Liberty Days: Seafaring Life in the 19th Century and co-editor of Iron Men and Wooden Women: Gender and Maritime History. She has been guest curator at The Peabody Museum of Salem and the U.S.S. Constitution Museum of Boston.
Customer Reviews:
A compelling and beautifully written account.......2002-12-08
This overview of American whaling was by far the best account of the hardships and the social dynamics of the fishery that I have read. It sensitively details the human relationships between sea captain and crew, between sailors and women at home, among the sailors themselves. It also describes the mechanics and challenges of the whale hunt. The author is a wonderful writer, too, bringing the research to life.
A Humorless and Passionless Study of Whaling.......2002-04-25
The average whaleman was poor, prejudiced, and liked to drink; capitalist owners were exploitative; sea captains were often harsh and unfair; and sailors didn't often socialize with women in positive contexts. If this comes as a shock, this book might be for you; but to anyone whose read more than a page of nautical history or fiction, Creighton's work doesn't offer much. What it does offer is a joyless and often tendentious study of whaling by a student secure in her modern superiority. Partial to using phrases like "rituals of indoctrination" to describe being dunked in water, and "bourgeois ideals of hygiene" to connote the desire to be clean, Creighton seems to overshoot her mark, suffocating a rather exciting topic under the wet blankets of politicized academia. Do we really need a Marxist critique of an antiquated industry so transparently exploitative? Do we really gain anything by analyzing nineteenth-century sailors under the lens of modern gender and culture studies? (The average white, uneducated sailor from New England didn't find heavy-set Black natives attractive -- astonishing!) One wonders why Creighton even wanted to write this book, as she demonstrates precious little sympathy for her topic. She exhibits neither the contagious passion of an enthusiast over a favorite arcane subject, nor any understanding of possible non-political motives that might have driven some men to the sea to hunt a dangerous prey. (It's not that her sympathies lie with the whales, either. She barely discusses the hunt at all.) While I understand that there's value in clearing the deck of misplaced Romantic illusions, Creighton's study is utterly humorless, and she goes to great lengths to pull her examples from worst-case scenarios. Even her language betrays her distaste -- the captain of a ship is never called "captain," but always "master;" the officers are the "afterguard;" inviting prostitutes onto the ship leads to an "orgy;" and anecdotes of garden-variety racism rate labels like "virulent." Worse, she displays little to no desire to get *inside* the world of men, with its rough humor, sexual frustrations, notions of fraternity and nobility, and spontaneous brutalities. Indeed, much of her account feels like she's studying an alien culture which she has no desire to actually meet. Happily, this adds an occasional bit of unintentional humor. (For instance, after a sailor's diary cheerfully describes a hazing ritual akin to a nautical snipe-hunt, she interprets the following free-for-all water fight as a sign of resistance to being "strong-armed into the sea-faring brotherhood.")
Of course, Creighton's study is not wholly without recommendations. A careful researcher, she does some good work in applying both factual data and common sense to debunk a few whaling myths, and her discussion of homoeroticism among sailors is a welcome topic often "overlooked" in other books on the subject. It's also refreshing to read an account so unilaterally supportive of the sailor's complaints, even if one gets the impression that she doesn't dig too deeply to understand "the other side" of an issue. But her tediously superior tone, her evident moral and political distaste, and her total lack of empathy with her subject do not make "Rites & Passages" a very instructive work, much less an enjoyable one.

Book Description
During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the whaling industry in New England sent hundreds of ships and thousands of men to distant seas on voyages lasting up to five years. In Captain Ahab Had a Wife, Lisa Norling taps a rich vein of sourcesincluding women's and men's letters and diaries, shipowners' records, Quaker meeting minutes and other church records, newspapers and magazines, censuses, and city directoriesto reconstruct the lives of the "Cape Horn widows" left behind onshore.
Norling begins with the emergence of colonial whalefishery on the island of Nantucket and then follows the industry to mainland New Bedford in the nineteenth century, tracking the parallel shift from a patriarchal world to a more ambiguous Victorian culture of domesticity. Through the sea-wives' compelling and often poignant stories, Norling exposes the painful discrepancies between gender ideals and the reality of maritime life and documents the power of gender to shape both economic development and individual experience.
Customer Reviews:
Better then Sena Jeter.......2000-10-27
While Lisa Norling certaintly did not write a book to change our times, she has written the best Ahab's wife book we have. Our only other real chioce seems to be Sena Jeter, and she is not an exeptional writer of any magnitude. So when choosing between the two, Lisa is the way to go.
