5 out of 5 stars This is the Best Backpacking Guide for Alaska!.......2000-02-02

3 mos. in Alaska and I used this book extensively! I plotted numerous trips from multi-day trips to long "all day" hikes with the aid of this book. I did about a 3rd of the trails in this book (maybe more) and the trail descriptions are accurate. Additional information regarding lodging was extremely useful....... If you are planning a backpacking trip in Alaska, buy this book! It would have been difficult finding backpacking information without it.

5 out of 5 stars Honest, Off-the-beaten-path advice, Great book.......1999-07-30

Jim Dufresne does a great job in outlining excellent hikes to take throughout Alaska. We used this book in a number of areas. He gives the backpacker's view of things, not the typical tourist's. Mr. Dufresne also wrote a great book on Glacier Bay. The only guidebook we used to kayak the area. We would have never done that area had we not come acrossed his book in Michigan where he is from.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-09-04

A great book for people who want to know what should be on their lifelong "to hike" list. I have found the maps to be very accurate, and the overall selection of hikes to be excellent.

This book shouldn't be used alone - for many of the hikes, there are numerous variations that can be figured out with a more detailed, area specific guidebook, and a map, of course.

    Happy hiking!

4 out of 5 stars The Best Hikes in the USA.......2002-12-07

This book is quite unique in terms of hiking selections and a valuable book for anyone who wants to experience some of the best of what the U.S. has to offer in terms of hiking and backpacking.

One of the most unique aspects is that it focuses on a handful of the best hikes in the most scenic locations in the U.S., not just the best hikes in every state. Let's face it, the scenery in every state is not created equal! You would have to read 40 books and thousands of pages to try and figure out which hikes are the most most spectacular, the hikes most worth the effort that hiking and backpacking can demand. This is the only book I have come across that has done this for you and done a good job at selecting the some of the very best hikes.

Another unique aspect is the hiking maps, which I found very easy to read with out knowing anything about maps. I am sure that topographic maps are more detailed and required for wilderness survival, but these mini trail maps are user friendly and easy to understand without having mapping knowledge.

There are certainly many other great hikes in these and other locations, so I am hoping for a sequel. And also another edition that will follow the same format entitled "Hiking Our Planet!! Can I pre-order before it is written?

3 out of 5 stars Too much space, not enough time.......2002-06-27

This tries, although admirably, to cram a lot of country into one book.

2 out of 5 stars Incomplete and impractical for the domestic traveler.......2001-09-13

As a fairly avid hiker, I found little to no value in this book whatsoever. On a positive note, it did provide minute details on what to expect on the trails, as well as important safety precautions for individual parks both with regard to weather conditions and wildlife. Nonetheless, its shortcomings outnumbered its merits.

First, the book is geared almost exclusively towards the foreign traveler. It spends the first section of the book covering issues of concern to those unfamiliar with customs and practices of the United States. This was not the major difficulty I had with the book, however. The hikes and travel routes suggested all expected the reader to enter the park/trail from one side, hike through, and exit from another side of the park. In some parks there are shuttles provided to and from sections of the park (i.e. Zion), but in my experience that is the exception rather than the rule. Many of the hikes spanned twenty or more miles in a single direction and unless you had a car waiting on the other side of the park, they present a huge logistical difficulty for most people driving to their destinations.

I was very disappointed to find no round-trip backcountry hikes in this book and wound up returning it several days after purchasing it because it was useless to me. Serious hikers are better off consulting ranger stations at the individual parks to get detailed information on hikes. Rangers can advise you on what types of hikes are best for you based on your skill level and how long you want to be in the woods or on the trails. Though I can see how an international traveler might find some of the information valuable, this book was disappointing and impractical for my purposes. The useful information it provided can easily be found in a multitude of other sources.

5 out of 5 stars Hiking in the USA (A hikers's AAA guide).......2000-11-05

I have bought many hiking books that tell all about the suggested hikes. After reviewing this book, I felt that it was more than a guide to trails, it goes beyond the normal. It is a compact book that can be carried in your pack that includes a lot of resourceful information. It includes facts, flora & fauna, health & safety, and transportation from various locations. It also includes topo maps of each region (small scale), information of each hike from start to finish. This book also tells you whether you need a permit to hike or not.For those that would like to know about surrounding towns or places to stay or eat, it's all included. Each description of the various hikes were very descriptive to the point of making me feel as if I was already on the trail, ie. seeps where tadpoles reside and fresh mint grows in abundance. There is also a section that includes long-distance trails. For a book in it's first edition, I was well pleased. So much information in one book. Great job!

5 out of 5 stars Best hiking in the Rockies in one small package.......2006-08-02

My husband and I used this book as the primary reference for three separate hiking & backbacking vacations over the past four years in the Rockies: Rocky Mtn Nat'l Park + Maroon Bells + Holy Cross + Mt Zirkel Wilderness in Colorado, Grand Teton Nat'l Park + Yellowstone in Wyoming, and Glacier Nat'l Park in Montana.

The hikes covered in this book really are the cream of the crop for these areas. The table up front, together with the nice tabs throughout the book help find hikes by area, interest, and difficulty quickly. Doesn't swamp you with quantity, you know that each of these hikes is exceptional--perfect for those of us travelling into the area who have only a week or two to soak up whatever we can. There's even color pictures from some of the most scenic hiking spots in the book to help get you excited to go and give you a little taste of what to expect for that region. Each hike has a map and description with enough detail to almost ensure that you don't go wrong. There's also good information on nearby towns and facilities, local campgrounds, and some detail on permits and when to go.

Only issues: failed to mention that a lot of trails in Glacier may not be accessible without ice ax and crampons until mid July due to snow (certainly we weren't prepared for the trips we really wanted to do when we were there in late June, and the Ptamigan tunnel doesn't open until it has been cleared using dynamite every year), and we did count on being able to buy fuel and other supplies in a town recommended by the book and turned out that the grocery store and camping goods store had almost nothing (this could have been that the book was 4 years old by this time).

I still give the book 5 stars for its excellent coverage of the entire Rocky Mountain area which inspired us to travel to places we might not have otherwise, its usefulness in actually helping us figure out which hikes to do once we got there, and that I would pick it over any of the other books we used for our trips. I picked up Hiking in the Sierra Nevada also by Lonely Planet on the strength of this book, but haven't really tested it yet.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet is the best overview of Rocky Mountain hikes.......2006-05-04

I first used the LP guide in 2005 to safely get me through a solo 6-day hike. (Highline Trail / Ptarmigan Tunnel Loop in Glacier National Park.)

It is excellent. The best guide for the entire Rocky Mountain region.

Once you decide on a specific hike, compare against the available local guidebooks. For Glacier National Park, for example, this is still the best option.

Glacier-Waterton International Peace Park - Spring, 2003 is not bad.

Hiking Glacier and Waterton Lakes National Parks - Erik Molvar, 1999 - the most widely available guide, is surprisingly weak.

Lonely Planet has the best maps. And the succinct style makes it easy to find what you are looking for.

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-07-13

I have used Lonely Planet guides for several years, and have found them to be uniformly excellent -- except for this one. An experienced climber, backpacker and hiker, I recently completed a loop hike described in this book (Needle Mountains, Winnemuche Wilderness in Colorado). Surprisingly, my hiking companion and I found the time estimates given for each section of the hike to be laughably incorrect (i.e., at least 50% too short in duration). I then checked time estimates given for other hikes I have done in past and found the same problem (e.g., backpacking into the Cirque of Towers in the Wind River Range from the Big Sandy trailhead takes 6 hours -- pure rubbish). I am now quite suspicious of the book's accuracy, and wonder whether anyone who wrote the book actually undertook the described hikes. I was also quite annoyed with the gratuitously sniffy descriptions sprinkled throughout the text, such as "the poor food and urban sprawl characteristic of the Rocky Mountain region" -- remember, however, that the book's authors are British. Save your money for better books written by local writers/hikers who actually know the trails.

            Product Description

Latinos/Latinas are the largest “minority” in the United States, but the field of U.S. Latino/Latina studies is still in its infancy. This work represents the first single volume ever published on the U.S. Latino/Latina religious experience, an area that is even less explored. A carefully selected group of experts examines the major sub-groups of Latinos/Latinas including Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, and Cuban Americans, along with some of the lesser studied groups such as Dominicans and Central Americans. In addition, the volume includes important thematic chapters on the roles of art, film, health care, literature, music, politics, and women’s influence in the U.S. Latino/Latina religious experience.

I read Saito's book for a course he taught at UCSD in San Diego. I felt that from his book I was given not only a unique and fascinating sociological examination of the interworkings of perhaps the first Asian suburban neighborhood in America, but I was also enlightened to a relatively new notion of 'whiteness' and its effects on the American scene. This book may be read by high school students or academic scholars, the topics of which address some of the most controversial issues in contemporary society.

5 out of 5 stars Intense, worthy read.......1999-03-02

I came upon the book in an unusual way. I was having dinner with a group of educators and happened to meet the author. Over dinner he talked about some of the issues he came across in his research and I decided to pick up a copy a few days later. I read the book and it surprised me. It was interesting to me because I'm from Hawaii, and the experiences of Asian Americans there, I think, are different, and the text let me experience a major community outside my own. And while I don't see myself as politically driven, I found myself caught up in the alliances/divisions he sees forming in the San Gabriel Valley. As the text examines the theoretical aspects of the politicking in that community, it also presents detailed accounts of actual events that took place during the various stages of grassroots organizing. The depth of the cross-referencing is impressive, but what strikes me most are the insightful, sometimes very personal observations offered to the researcher by participants as events formed --observations that exist almost as sub-themes to the research. He sifts through then traces back lines of political theory through to actual events as residents began to change their community. A worthy read. It has caused me to look at my own community and makes me want to understand more about the forces and processes of change.

            Book Description

According to bestselling marketing expert Sergio Zyman, many companies rely too heavily on innovation to solve their problems. Whenever a brand or business gets old and tired, the impulse is to scrap it and start over with something fresh. It sounds great, but more often than not, innovation simply doesn't work. Zyman knows this firsthand— he was the chief marketing officer at Coca-Cola during the disastrous launch of New Coke.

So what's the alternative? Zyman now preaches the power of renovation, not innovation. Recapture the essence of your existing brands, products, and core competencies, and do more of the things that made you great in the first place. For instance, Coca- Cola's essence was about authenticity, continuity, and stability, and New Coke undermined all three qualities. It seems obvious in retrospect, yet too many managers are so impressed by innovation that they approve ideas no one will buy, such as premoistened toilet paper or smokeless cigarettes.

With Renovate Before You Innovate, Zyman explains the tools managers need to revitalize their marketing strategies and improve their growth rates. This book will challenge the conventional business wisdom and help companies make smarter decisions.

5 out of 5 stars Growing a Business the Right Way.......2004-10-22

Fascinating approach that skewers the notion that innovation is the savior of business growth. Sergio Zyman provides examples galore showing how innovation has derailed many a company from its true course.

His notion of leveraging the essence of a business to do more of the things that made it great in the first place is very powerful, and it really leaves you scratching your head at how some companies can still focus on continually seeking out the new thing rather than the RIGHT thing for their business.

Excellent anecdotes and many solid approaches to relooking at a business in order to uncover growth opportunities that make sense.
