Book Description
"Often plagiarized by other guide writers, Blue Guides have always been a gold standard for accuracy and depth."Daily Telegraph
The best, most comprehensive guide to one of the world's most intriguing cities. With detailed walking tours and helpful guides to the abundance of art, this is an essential guide for anyone interested in an in-depth view of Rome. Color photographs, maps, floor plans, diagrams.
Customer Reviews:
Best for history.......2007-09-04
The Blue Guides are all stellar tools and this one was a gem this Summer.
Probably too dense to take along.......2007-07-08
On his website, travel guru Rick Steves says that Blue Guides take "a dry and scholarly approach to the countries of Europe. They're ideal if you want to learn as much about history, art, architecture, and culture as you possibly can." This is basically true, though I much prefer a "dry and scholarly" tone to Rick's "nerdy and precious" style. He's great when it comes to practical tips, but he can't touch the historical, artistic and architectural content of the Blue Guides.
Blue Guides pack a tremendous amount of information into their pages, much more than any other guide I've used. They're wonderful for reading before and after your trip, but they're probably too dense to pack and take along for most people. Before leaving on my honeymoon to Italy, I photocopied the relevant pages of the Northern Italy book to avoid having to pack it because I knew I wouldn't be visiting most of the cities it covers. On that trip I field-tested three guides: Rick Steves, Eyewitness, and Blue Guide.
Blue Guides are not good to use as your main guide. They're far too light on practical matters such as maps, directions, hotels and restaurants, and they're not updated every year. I used Eyewitness to plan and get around and then pulled out the Blue Guide once I reached a major site. I used Rick Steves so little and found him so unhelpful that I left his books behind in hotels along the way.
Blue Guides have come a long way over the years. I was given an older edition of the Rome guide many years ago, and I couldn't believe how small the print was; it had a lot of detail but would have been very difficult to use while traveling. The publishers have learned their lesson: the current edition of the Rome guide is far easier to use and much more attractive, with colorful maps and an easier-to-read format. They've improved on the practical aspects as well, but you'll probably be in trouble if you rely on this book to get around in Rome. I recommend packing a more comprehensive one-volume guide such as Eyewitness and using Blue Guide to learn about specific sites once the other guide gets you to them. Keep Blue Guide on your shelf as an attractive reference and let it inspire you to return to Rome in the future!
Disaster.......2007-05-24
Given that the product showed as shipped but it never arrived, and I had to buy another one needed for.... a trip to Rome.... I have asked for and been granted a refund.
Incredibly Thorough.......2007-02-13
Unlike the usual guidebook, the blue guide provides an incredibly indepth look at each place in Rome you might visit. This is not a "visual" guide like the DK series, but a text with pages of description. Some excellent maps of the interior of sites and some beautiful pictures. I used this book along with a more traditional guidebook. Armchair travelers would appreciate this book because of the depth of the descriptions.
One disadvantage is how heavy the book is. Another potential disadvantage is the lack of "practical" info. If you want to know what the airport is like in Rome, how to travel with children, or much about hotels or restaurants, this guide is not for you. There is a brief "visitor information" section at the back, but it is very brief.
Blue Guide Rome.......2007-01-11
Has all the information in the Baedeker Guides from the 20's and 30's but better maps and city diagrams. The best guide book for art, architecture and history available.
Book Description
Fully updated and revised, this is the definitive guide to Rome. Rome's remarkable history and culture are incomparable. Soak up the atmosphere of the Roman Empire in the Forum and Palatine, marvel at the size and splendor of St. Peter's and the Vatican, delight in the Baroque architecture of Bernini and Borromini, or follow the trail of celebrated painters such as Michelangelo, Raphael, and Caravaggio. Rome is a city best explored on foot. This Blue Guide has over thirty detailed walks accompanied by a comprehensive color street map, site plans, and ground plans to museums and monuments. Packed with information about the history and artistic heritage of this magnificent city, the guide includes the latest updates on restoration programs and museum re-openings. Also included are day trips out of the city to Tivoli, Hadrian's Villa, Ostia Antica, the Alban Hills, and other lovely locations. Replete with practical advice-from carefully selected hotels, restaurants, and cafés to detailed information on public transportation-this guide provides everything you need to make the most of your visit.
Customer Reviews:
Don't leave home--for Rome--without it!.......2006-01-19
Indispensible during the several days I spent in Rome last February. It covers not only where to find major sites but also the history and relevance of such sites. I had no problem whatsoever navigating the maps, and the only supplement needed was the free paper underground map provided at the subway or your hotel. Even so, you can get along without that if you know where you are going and look at the information on the boards before getting on the train. Even before I went and after I returned home I still like to read through it and think back to my time there and when I will visit again. Very coherent, detailed, and easy-to-use. If you really want to see Rome, I think a Blue Guide is probably more helpful (and can lead to more memorable experiences) than the "bus tour."
The one and only guide for Rome arts and history.......2005-08-21
The essential guide. We toured the Forum with it, and never lost track of which ruins we were looking at! Also very useful and accurate on Vatican museums. A must for art and history buffs.
"Blue Guide" means "Blue Guide" (uninitiated need not apply).......2005-01-26
Let's be clear. This "guide" book is usually standard textbook fare for the 35 American students chosen to study at the Intercollegiate Center for Classical Studies (ICCS) in Rome. Why? Between two covers and kept in your sachel, it offers everything a student would need to know about the Roman ruins that might have been the Temple to Spes or the iconography of a Caravaggio hanging in ... wait, a minute, what church are we in? The Blue Guide series is for those who are looking for a little education amongst their travels. As such, it usually needs supplementing with a more popular, flashy compendium of phone numbers or restaurants. At least now we're clear (but don't begrudge it).
a fine guide to the historical/cultural sites.......2004-06-29
This book divides Rome into 29 walking tours. Each one takes about a day. Maybe you could do two per day in the summer. A few of the tours have a common theme, but most of them just cover a region of the city. The focus is on cultural/historical sites. There's very little about where to eat, sleep, or shop. The author is thorough and provides a lot of insight. The book reads as a folksy continuous narrative by a knowledgeable and perceptive guide. If you have a month in Rome, you could use this book to get a great tour.
Many tourists would find this book difficult to use. Suppose you're in Rome for a few days, not nearly enough time to walk all 29 tours. There is no easy way to use this book to prioritize which sites to visit.
The Michelin Green Guide has a similar aim and focus, but is much more user-friendly for a short visit. It breaks the city into a smaller number of regional walks. In general it's not quite as thorough as the Blue Guide in terms of what it says about each site and the number of sites it includes. The Michelin Guide has a system of one, two, and three stars to prioritize the sites. This makes it easy for the user to just hit the highlights.
Serves a specific purpose.......2004-05-27
If you are looking for a guide to do EVERYTHING, you can probably do better. Certainly, if you only want to bring one book, this probably isn't it. However, I wouldn't dare go to Rome without it. Rome is an amazing city, where the smallest church may seem like nothing from the outside. But go in, open your Blue Guide and suddenly you realize that there's a Caravaggio or a Bernini on the premises. I don't use a guide such as this for planning. I use it for reference while I'm in the city. I'd have missed PLENTY without it. For the purpose it serves for me, it's the best there is!

Only if you are interested in Art, Arch., History, etc........2000-11-14
I miss these books most when I am in a country for which they are out of print (recently Spain) as other guidebooks provide little information on these topics. However, I also buy a standard guidebook for general (hotel, etc.) information as the Blue Guides are useless for that. If you are not that interested in more details on these topics (there is no reason you should or shouldn't be), then you'd probably be wasting your money buying this book. In that case I would give this book one star.
I think the previous review expresses the same point but in a different way. Perhaps it is partly in reaction to this type of review that recently there seems to have been a dumbing-down of the books, which is a shame. Now that is a snotty comment.
A Wealth Of Information ........1999-08-06
This lists interesting sites in many towns and cities. This has more detail than is needed for the rushed tourist with only a couple of days to do the "highlights" of Italy, but is great for the more serious visitor with more time. Info on both the famous sites and many possibilities for going off the beaten path.
Art and Architecture guide, not travel.......1999-07-09
The book is for the art and architecture historian/student. Not meant for the casual traveler to Europe. This book is an authorative on the subjects it involves. The perfect book to have when you want to know what the archtecture in the region is about and wish not to carry a huge "textbook". Not some lame book that tells you of hotels and restaurants to visit with lots of pretty pictures.
Way to snotty and confusing for the "real" traveler!!.......1998-06-09
I searched for a great comprehensive book on Italy for a long time. This one was recommended by a friend, whose advice I won't follow again!!!! It is such a tough nut to crack!! A plethora of information in rammed into this book, it's overwhelming and VERY CONFUSING!!!!! I recommend a Fodor's Gold Guide for the truly practical traveler!! Great little cities that you would hate to miss out on aren't even included in this book! Check out a more practical guide.

Customer Reviews:
Il Mezzogiorno.......2006-11-25
The American traveller to southern Italy should be warned that this region is much different from the more heavily visited and promoted areas of Tuscany, Cinque Terre, and the Amalfi Coast. While those northerly provinces are focussed on tourism and cater to visitors, the south in general can seem almost indifferent. That is not to suggest that it be avoided. The Mezzogiorno is a charming, down-to-earth region that has much to recommend it, particularly to the visitor interested in obtaining a more realistic, everyday sort of insight into Italian life and culture.
That said, because most of the larger guidebooks that give an overview of the entire Italian peninsula provide only sparse information about the southern third, I would not recommend venturing there without Blue Guide Southern Italy. This little volume provides invaluable background and detail about the major cities such as Bari and Lecce, and also covers the lesser known, smaller towns, beaches, and countryside. From the Sassi of Matera to the Trulli of Alberobello to Bitonto's beautifully maintained, 1000 year old cathedral, Paul Blanchard's readable, accurate, entertaining text is enriching and invaluable.

As an Italian who comes from Southern Italy I found the Blue Guide covering this area to be absolutely on target and extremely detailed. I have been so impressed by the Blue Guides, that it has become the first item I pack when ready for travel

Book Description
Meet Fred.
In his powerful new book THE FRED FACTOR, motivational speaker Mark Sanborn recounts the true story of Fred, the mail carrier who passionately loves his job and who genuinely cares about the people he serves. Because of that, he is constantly going the extra mile handling the mail – and sometimes watching over the houses – of the people on his route, treating everyone he meets as a friend. Where others might see delivering mail as monotonous drudgery, Fred sees an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of those he serves.
We’ve all encountered people like Fred in our lives. In THE FRED FACTOR, Mark Sanborn illuminates the simple steps each of us can take to transform our own lives from the ordinary – into the extraordinary. Sanborn, through stories about Fred and others like him, reveals the four basic principles that will help us bring fresh energy and creativity to our life and work: how to make a real difference everyday, how to become more successful by building strong relationships, how to create real value for others without spending a penny, and how to constantly reinvent yourself.
By following these principles, and by learning from and teaching other “Freds,” you, too, can excel in your career and make your life extraodinary. As Mark Sanborn makes clear, each of us has the potential be a Fred.THE FRED FACTOR shows you how.

The short and sweet of customer service.......2007-10-19
This is a quick read and it hits right at the key elements of providing exceptional customer service. Grab a copy and read it on your next plane ride. You'll hit the ground running with a few simple changes in your perspective that will help you to have move 'Fred-like' moments. As a training support tool, you'll find additional resources to use at www.fredfactor.com.
Let's be more like Fred.......2007-09-14
The Fred Factor
The Fred Factor is a rather small book that gives the details on how someone can, by its own motivation, get the extraordinary out of something rather common. The book gives an explanation of how the behaviour of someone can change when and if they commit to it. Some of the topics in the book are rather obious, but re-reading them every once and a while makes one reflect again on how we sometimes can go the extra mile and make a huge different.
We all have values. This book is about making sure that we don't forget about these values when we are doing our job. Let's all care and have a little Fred in us..
This book is worth the reading.

Fred Factor.......2007-09-10
Buying new from Amazon is almost always the best way to go. As a school secretary having them delivered to our door is always a plus. You are quick and accurate. As a college student I like to buy used and you take your chances doing this. BUT if you review who you are buying from FIRST you should have no problems. I have greatly appreciated the deals that I have gotten thru Amazon.
Choosing to Make a Difference is Leadership.......2007-08-28
Every day, in every individual interaction, we have a choice; a choice to make the interaction transactional or relational. That choice will make all the difference in the world to the quality of our lives.
In "The Fred Factor", motivational speaker Mark Sanborn tells the very real story of his postal delivery person, Fred - and how he gave definition to his job as a `service provider' by making mail delivery a relational interaction. Sanborn says that Fred exemplified 4 principles: Everyone Makes a Difference; Success is Built on Relationships; You Must Continually Create Value for Others and It Doesn't Have to Cost a Penny; You Can Reinvent Yourself Regularly. All very real and very useful principles, but perhaps the most valuable principle in this story and the other examples in the book is the principle of choice: Everyone has the choice to be a Leader, by making a difference in the lives of others. This book is highly recommended as a gift for those who say, "Why bother?"
Learn to be a Fred.......2007-08-23
This is a pass it forward book. I am a Fred and I have helped others find the Fred in them. I really enjoyed this book and recommend it for everyone who is tired of seeing grumps in the office or in their home and wants to make a change. One person can make a difference if that peoson is a Fred.

Customer Reviews:
This book is pretty short, but good.......2007-01-22
This is a very short book: something like 113 pages with not a lot of page surface for words. It's one of those books that should really have been longer (to get your money's worth) but couldn't really be without distorting the clarity of the message.
It is a quick and enjoyable read, and it has a lot of real life examples and ideas. Most of it is commonsense, but that doesn't mean it isn't useful. It is all about the excellent service that a mail carrier provides over his career, and why he chooses to go "above and beyond" all the time with his dedication.
It reminds me a lot of another book called "Fish! A Remarkable Way to Boost Morale and Improve Results". We read both books for our workplace book-club and enjoyed both. Both were written by motivational speakers, and both try to work their way into a whole teaching program with awards and special terms and the like. Personally, I don't care for this type of commercialization, and I'm not about to go out calling people "Freds" or hand out "Fred" pins, but I darn well am going to look at the message of the book seriously and take it to heart.
I recommend this as a book that will appeal to a lot of people because it is not intimidating (especially to non-readers) and because it is written in an easy conversational style. (I think it is a good book for reading clubs.)
And finally, as one of my favorite lines in the book said (spoken by Abraham Lincoln) "Whatever you are, be a good one."
The Fred Factor.......2007-01-09
Outstanding look at excellent customer service and what it takes to deliver it!
Fun and easy read.......2007-01-06
This is a very motivating book. I shared it with my team of guest service reps at our hospital and they loved it. It is a fun read and a great discussion piece.
The Fred Factor.......2006-11-10
Not an easy read, kind of slow. There is some good advice that we already know, but just don't utilize. I still haven'r finished reading.
great tool for team and conference.......2005-08-15
I thought this book was extremely helpful with ideas on how to improve service and thereby improve business
