Everything you ever wanted to know about mushrooms!.......2000-12-04

If you are a mushroom fanatic, this book has it all. Lots of pictures! It is really a thorough encyclopedia with scientific names and data too. You can look up fourteen deadly mushrooms, 100 poisonous mushrooms, plus every other mushroom in the world. The text is interesting, for example: "Poison Pie mushroom is not as bad as its name suggests, being merely indigestible by people with delicate stomachs." This book would be great for a report on mushrooms or as a handy reference to look up mushrooms.

beautiful, but not so practical concerning edible mushrooms.......2000-09-26

This book is quite beautiful and scientific. There is very little advice on how to identify mushrooms, although the scientific classifications are emphasized. There is a useful glossary of mushroom "terms." There are sections that compare the properties of "look-alike" varieties. I was surprised that it only detailed one species of truffle and could not find any of the chinese mushrooms that I wanted to know more about. The index is not very useful, nor were there very many references to common names. There are many beautiful photographs, so I would recommend this book for those who like to look at interesting photos.

Good but not a complete guide.......2007-10-05

This is a lovely book, but it is not a substitute for a good field guide. It isn't meant to be carried around. It lacks a key to help identify mushrooms. It include separate chapters on edible and poisonous mushrooms . . . which means a lot of paging through to attempt an identification.

Also, the book is from the UK, and the recipe section at the end has a UK slant. It also lists a few ingredients under the name used in England: aubergines, etc.

Very enjoyable, but foraging on your own is still risky.......2007-08-20

This is a nice book that offers an overview of the many varieties of edible, and not-so-edible mushrooms. The photos are excellent, and there's a decent section in the back on mushroom handling and recipes.

HOWEVER, contrary to what the cover implies, there isn't really enough information present for people to just read this book and then expect to be able to go traipsing off into the woods for some impromptu mushroom picking with any degree of confidence. Not recommended !

People should only pick wild mushrooms if they truly know what they're doing - or better still, go in the company of a trained expert (mycologist) who knows what they're doing.

All it takes is a search of the internet, a flip through the phone book, or perhaps a few phonecalls to areas colleges or culinary clubs, in order to find the name of a local mushroom expert who's willing to take people on picking forays.

In any case, this is still an enjoyable book, and if nothing else it'll whet your appetite for dishes like risotto w/porchini, cream of mushroom soup, etc.

WONDERFUL.......2003-05-13

This is only book that mushroom lovers need. It has over SIX HUNDREDED fully colored AMAZING photos!! The chapters are organized beautifuly as well. It goes from propper tools needed and locations of mushrooms, to storing and drying mushrooms. Then there are the two glorious sections of edible and posionious mushrooms. Then the final section is the cook book! It has sections for "wild mushroom breakfast", "soups, starters and salads", "poultry and game dishes","beef pork and lamb", "fish and shellfish", and "vegitarian dishes". Each section has well over 20 fully pictured recipies! Then it concludes with a glossary at the end of the book. What a wonderful book! It is excellent for and artist referrence book as well!!

Lavishly illustrated guide to 1000 European species.......2006-09-09

This guide is on a par with the older Roger Phillips "Mushrooms" and very similar in size and format. Unlike Phillips, all photographs have been shot in situ. With so few guides to fungi available, and each covering a particular selection of species, it's best to assemble a good library - and this should be one of the major works. Even though the focus is Europe, many of the fungi have much wider ranges and this book is invaluable elsewhere in the world too (I use it regularly in temperate and tropical America).

Must have.......2002-09-09

This is a great book for anyone interested in mushrooms. It entails ancient and ritualistic use of Psilocybin mushrooms as well as the Amantia species all the way up to the 90s. The book also breaks down the basic knowlege you must know if you intend to have any voice on mushrooms in general. This was the first book I ever got on mushrooms. I find some of the 90s information inaccurate based on ignorance but regardless you must have this book.

Took Professor Merle Erickson's course (few years ago now) never met a professor who made more of an effort to get the message across, and in this case a very valid/worthwhile message! The book is readable and useful.....where do you think much of Private Equity/Structured Finance profits come from?!

very good book that addresses contemporary tax issues (i.e. savings vehicles, organizational format, tax arbitrage, international, M&A, etc.) by consistently using a few concise, clear frameworks (all parties, all taxes, all costs AND 1 pocket 2 another, 1 time to another, 1 type to another.

authors get carried with away algebra formulas to prove out simple concepts. can be tedious to read at times. use thia book as a guie to understand concept.

Solid treatment of material.......2001-06-08

We used this book as the text for a masters level course in our masters of accouting program. Students responded well and appeared to enjoy the book. They found the treatment of the material to be at an apporpriate level, and they rated the book a five on a five point anonymous rating. The only suggestion they proferred was for some companion piece covering a few of the more currently used planning techniques.

Great Text For a Complex Subject.......2001-06-06

As another reviewer states, the material for this book was used in the Taxes & Business Strategy class at both the University of Chicago and Stanford's business schools. Compared to other texts on this subject, it is actually readable and, more importantly, understandable to a non-tax professional. The are an abundance of examples that you can apply directly to situations which arise in real world situations. The 2nd edition has been updated to reflect most recent changes in the tax law.

The book is a must for anybody in investment banking, law, private equity, and other fields where a tax plays a large role in determining the outcome and structure of deals, compensation, etc.

A good text.......2000-05-01

Excerpts of the text are used in the Taxes and Business Strategy course at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. Scholes and Wolfson have provided an excellent, multi-perspective framework for thinking about tax issues and how taxes can impact the value of a transaction. Unfortunately, S&W have been making too much money in the private sector to update this book so some of the details in the book regarding tax laws are dated.
