    Product Description

Mr. George L. Shivas was a well-known evangelist, commended to the work of the Lord from the Domion Street assembly in Orillia, Ontario in 1911. His labours were in Northern Ontario -- he helped on the farm where he was staying in the morning and preached the Gospel at night. He kept a diary almost every year after he was saved, and this book is based on those diaries. It contains a genuine history of the blessing of the Lord in Northern Ontario over the first sixty years of the 20th century.

                    2 out of 5 stars Limited scope.......2007-05-30

LP, like all guidebooks, varies in quality depending on the author. While this guide on Syria/Lebanon isn't the worst, it could be much better.

The main problem is that it is extremely limited in its scope. Both Syria and Lebanon, but Syria in particular, have literaly hundreds of sites to see, but you wouldn't know it with this LP. It only gives you the most popular sites and then a few it claims are "off-the-beaten-track" but really aren't. It misses some of Syria's best out of the way castles and ruins. Great stuff that if you only relied on LP, which promotes teh beaten backpacker track, you would never find.

I would give it a 1-star, but it is saved by the hotel recommendations. Syria is a place where knowing what hotels to hit up can be hard, and LP does a good job giving you affordable ones that are tourist-tested.

Still, though, the guide lacks any real historical or cultural insight and really only gives the illusion of leading you down the "road-less traveled."

I lived in Syria for a year and tried to take in as much as possible and thus found myself sifting through numerous guides. The one I found to be the best was Footprints, but they haven't published an updated version since 2001. The new Bradt is quite promising, but if you really want to know what Syria has to offer, you need "Monuments of Syria" by Ross Burns. It doesn't have many glossy pictures, but it does have every single cultural and archaeological site worth seeing in this great country.

                    5 out of 5 stars Great guide!.......2006-09-07

I used this guide for travels in Lebanon this past summer, fortunately, before the war. I explored Beirut and Tripoli, and this book provided excellent information on both cities. I found everything from hotel descriptions to guides on inter-country travel via bus and taxi to be accurate and helpful. Whatever information you could require for travelling through Lebanon and Syria is found here. Overall, a solid and reliable guide to an amazing region.

4 out of 5 stars "As you wish".......2000-12-29

"As you wish" is the response to most questions in Syria, making the LP Guide very necessary. It contains excellent information on rarer sites and ruins along with very good historical information about them.

The hotel information was very helpful since good lodging in Syria can be hard to find. The information on the souks is very good for those that like to shop. Finally in the same vain, their food section was very helpful for different budgets.

The LP Guide is more detailed than the new Neos Guide published by Michelin, but unfortunately the maps are awkward to read in the LP guide and the detail maps to some of the less well traveled sites are not very reliable and the directions are poor. (I searched for a specifically described site near Aleppo for over an hour.) Overall though, it contains very detailed information, which is definately necessary in Syria since one is unable to find such information locally without considerable effort. I would recommend the Neos Guide for an overview and quality maps, and the LP guide for more detailed information. Both guides are necessary for a meaningful and hassle free trip.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for all your travel needs (in Syria, of course!).......2000-06-01

I've just arriving from a travel to Syria. I've travelled a lot and I've ever used LP guides. This is one of the best. During my travel in Syria sometimes I had asked to myself: where can I find this, that, those...all the answers, the most weird too, are in this book. During my visit to the dead towns (near Aleppo)the guide wared me about wild dogs. So, you can't believe it, I'll find the dog. The guide don't say how can I save my pour legs...but this was a my problem not of the book. Is like to have a friend with you who knows everything about this country

Having travelled a lot using the LP guides with no problems I can only recommend them... but even if your not planning a trip to Lebanon- this book is amazing as a reference to the region; making order out of the chaos of Lebanon's recent history in an unbiased and moderate historiography- unswayed by religous or cultural persuasion and remaining sensitive to Lebanon's unique history of generally fruitful co-existance and co-operation between some 15 different religous/cultural groups who inhabit and interpret such a dramatic and tiny country, especially in a region characterised by the sometimes not-so-happy collision between east and west. This is an extremely valuable guide for travellers, people with an interest in the Mediteranean and the Near East, or for that matter, any one of the 13 million Lebanese descendants living outside of that tiny piece of heaven. The section on Mount Lebanon was particularly good, though the author could have covered more of the awesome hiking trails and forest overlooking Beirut to be found in the Metn valleys (midway between Jenkins & Jousiffes Mt Lebanon & Chouf)... but no body's perfect!! :) This book is excellent and very well written- the authors deserve great credit.

                    5 out of 5 stars Perfect reference!.......2001-12-11

I returned to Lebanon after many years away. This book had everything! My family (who have never left Lebanon) were also amazed by the detail and accuracy of the book (even the cost of a Taxi from Homs to Beirut to within 50 cents US). Insightful and straightforward. Arranged very well. There is very good detail, even on places that the Ministry of Tourism is scant on. Highly recommended!

When I decided to move to Lebanon three years ago, I bought the first edition of this book, and it was like a bible for my husband and me as we got our bearings, traveled around the country, and branched out on our own. We still use it as a reference when we go back to visit our favorite places. The information is clear and easy to follow, the historical sections, information about the culture, and practical information are all up to date and accurate. All in all, this is an excellent resource for anyone coming to Lebanon. Enjoy your stay!

For thousands of years Lebanon has occupied a position in history that is entirely out of proportion to its size. Nearly every Westerner has read or heard about this tiny country, yet its past and present, its inhabitants, and the land itself hold countless secrets. Ann Jousiffe's "Lebanon" will help you explore this legendary corner of the eastern Mediterranean, discover many of its unique treasures, and savor its seemingly infinite variety. Her book provides historical, cultural, and political commentary, advice on food and accommodations, extensive background on archaeological sites, a useful language section, and a glossary. It also includes maps and color photographs.

A perfect companion to Jousiffe's book is "Recipes and Remembrances from an Eastern Mediterranean Kitchen: A Culinary Journey through Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan," by Lebanese-born Sonia Uvezian. An astounding achievement of culinary, historical, and cultural research, this masterly volume is a godsend for anyone who plans to visit Lebanon.

                          Book Description

For the past three decades, the federal government has targeted the poorest areas of American cities with a succession of antipoverty initiatives, yet these urban neighborhoods continue to decline. According to David Rusk, focusing on programs aimed at improving inner-city neighborhoods-playing the "inside game"-is a losing strategy. Achieving real improvement requires matching the inside game with a strong "outside game" of regional strategies to overcome growing fiscal disparities, concentrated poverty, and urban sprawl. In this persuasive book filled with personal observations as well as his trademark mastery of census statistics, Rusk argues that state legislatures must set new rules of the game.

5 out of 5 stars fighting the big lie.......2001-01-24

The biggest obstacle Americans suffer to any sort of progress on urban problems is the Big Lie that after being forced to lie in their own excrement for decades, America's poorest cities can right themselves through a little more efficiency (in the conservative version) or Great Society spending on "community development" (in the liberal version). Rusk shows why community development doesn't work, and also shows why most cities (other than a few immigration hubs like NYC and Sun Belt cities with unlimited annexation powers) simply can't compete with their suburbs without outside help (or at least without a termination of outside hostility, such as highway spending that drags development ever further into the suburbs): if a city has no tax base and poor people who make public services more expensive, it can't compete with the suburbs, efficiency or no efficiency. Like Cities without Suburbs (also by Rusk), this is a masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars A "Must Read" for Those Concerned about Urban Poverty.......1999-12-23

Rusk's book roots out the causes of concentrated urban poverty, proposes solutions, and provides examples of success stories. Rusk convincingly argues that poor racial minorities should be welcome to live in functional neighborhoods, such as the suburbs. I attended a conference at which Rusk discussed "Inside Game, Outside Game," and I was delighted to hear one politician declare that that book should be required reading for every politician in my state. I agree.

                            Winning the Chain Restaurant Game

                            Are you ready for success?...

Find out what it takes in this insider's guide to making it in today's most exciting growth industry.

In this instructive and inspiring book, award-winning authors and foodservice industry experts Charles Bernstein and Ron Paul tell how the most successful restaurant companies win with bottom-up management, putting the customer on top. Based on interviews with more than a hundred industry executives and packed with enlightening examples as well as a few historic failures, this unique book teaches important lessons for restaurateurs and other entrepreneurs:

Few success stories so thoroughly embody the twentieth-century American dream as those of restaurant chains such as McDonald's, KFC, Pizza Hut, Wendy's, Little Caesar's, and Taco Bell. But besides the "true grit" demonstrated by entrepreneurial heros like McDonald's Ray Kroc and Wendy's Dave Thomas, what does it take to build and maintain a successful restaurant or retail chain? Find out in this first book to give a broad, long-term perspective on one of the nation's leading growth industries and to offer crucial lessons for all entrepreneurs, no matter what the business.

Winning the Chain Restaurant Game, by award-winning authors and noted foodservice industry experts Charles Bernstein and Ron Paul, documents the critical success factors required for one of the toughest, most competitive industries.

Highlighting the winning styles of more than a hundred chain executives, their triumphs, trials, disappointments, and turnarounds, this fascinating and instructive book identifies the eight strategic "links" that lead to victory in the chain restaurant business. With surgical precision, Bernstein and Paul explore such key factors as leadership, motivation, bulk purchasing, marketing, identity, consistency, and expansion. But they place focus ahead of everything and conclude that the entrepreneurial passion of an executive who deeply believes in his concept is the ultimate catalyst for success.

Small- to medium-size chains are going public at a dizzying pace and there are enormous financial opportunities for savvy restaurant owners. Winning the Chain Restaurant Game arms operators with the vital know-how needed to win the game.

                            Book Description

Winning the Service Game details an explicit set of rules by which organizations can meet customer expectations and needs as well as capitalize on customer competencies as a source of competitive advantage. Drawing on an extensive body of research, the authors reveal the important relationships across three tiers in any service organization--customers, front-line workers, and management--and demonstrate how management can ensure that all three tiers work in harmony to produce an environment where employees flourish and customers experience superior service.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant - A Shining Star among Service Books.......2001-11-29

Ben Schneider has written a book of extraordinary value here. Having read several dozen service books, this one ranks with The Service Profit Chain, Call Center Management on Fast Forward and The Discipline of Market Leaders. As a psychologist, Schneider demonstrates a profound understanding of customer (and employee!) behavior. Some may criticize its mildly academic approach, but anyone who wants to get beyond the fluffy prose and jaded case studies of American-based service needs to read this book. Unlike so many publications today, this one cannot go out of date.

2 out of 5 stars Not for practioners, but great for students.......1999-11-07

I must say that I was quite dissapointed with the book. The book was stale and at times too disciptive. Perhaps, it was meant for students and not real world practictioners. However, to be fair, I am quite sure that both the authors are experts on the subject and would be great if they had written a more applicable / practical follow-up for us in the (service) game. Like I said, this would be a good text and that's about it.

5 out of 5 stars Service oriented managers MUST read this book!.......1998-12-09

I am in the service business. Training people in service has been my job for many years. I have read dozens of books on service. However, this book presents a total shift in mind when speaking about service. We all have a lot yet to cover if we are committed to generate service excellence. Don't miss the opportunity. One of the worst books about gambling that I ever read (and I read many of them).

First of all, it is too old: written in April 2001, that's more than two years ago, and that's not good for a world (the internet) that's changing daily.

Even not considering this, it doesn't give any particular advice or original consideration. Every chapter is filled out with questions that are, in the end, not answered efficacely. And if you ever played at least one online casino, you'll know more that he does.

But the worst part is that he gives wrong indications about Blackjack, Roulette, and Craps strategy. Anyone who knows the odds and basic strategy for these games can understand that. And the money management part is wrong, too.

My suggestion, go find another good gambling book.

I bought this book in hopes of navigating the jungle of office politics. Unfortunately this book reads like a very poor term paper, scraping to come up with material to meet the required length.

This book will soon find it's way to the garage sale or the fireplace.
