Exploring Ancient Egypt, the fifth volume in the Places in Time series, reveals the excitement of science and history as it tours archaeological discoveries from ancient Egypt. Each of twenty chapters treats a particular site, reflecting a variety of site types (pyramids, rock tombs, temples, and most of the major settlements such as el-Amarna and Alexandria) and offering a balance between daily life, religion, and funerary practices. Each site-chapter features a map showing its location, a site reconstruction, and a chronological table covering the span of occupation. Each chapters narrative describes the history of the sites excavation, the principal finds, and a discussion of the particular method being used. Exploring Ancient Egypt offers a fascinating lens in which to view the culture and lifestyle of the people of ancient Egypt, their technological achievements, their relationships with and ways of exploiting the environment, and the spiritual ideologies that motivated them. Here are some of the places visited in Exploring Ancient Egypt Hierakonpolis: The First Egyptian City Abdyos: The Tombs of the First Kings Saqqara: The Step Pyramid of Djoser Giza: The Great Pyramid and the Sphinx Abusir and Abu Ghurob: Royal Tombs and Sun Temples Aswan: The Tombs and Shrines of the Nomarchs El-Lahun and Kahun: The Pyramid and Town of Senusret II Beni Hasan: The Rock Tombs of the Oryx Nome South Sinai: Turquoise Mining at Wadi Mahara and Serabit El-Kaham Elkab: The City and Necropolis of Nekheb

creative way to present history.......2000-05-25
This book presented some events from Egypt's history in the form of newspaper articles. It was a very creative way to give children an introduction to Egyptian history. It presented lots of interesting informationa, and also some neat pictures. This book is good at sparking a greater interest in history in children while entertaining them at the same time.
This book captured my child's attention.......2000-05-12
As a homeschooling mom, I highly value books that inform my child about historical facts, while captivating them with exciting stories. I highly recommend this book as a supplement to any Egyptian studies. Written in "newspaper format", it is a joy to read aloud to my children. Using imaginative headlines and wonderful illustrations and photos, this book has definitely captured my child's attention. The plethora of historical facts presented are accurate and entertaining. I would recommend this book for children between the ages of 5-12.
Shedding Light on Ancient Egypt.......2000-03-28
This is a delightful book. It has wonderful color illustrations on every page, and it's loaded with facts and information about the history of Ancient Egypt. It covers a 3000 yr. period, and contains a detailed, colored map of ancient Egypt, articles on pyramid building and the mystery surrounding the death of Tutankhamun, a list of the most important Egyptian gods and pharaohs, and charming colored "ads" for goods and services in use at that time. This informative book should appeal to kids, teenagers and adults alike, who want to learn more about the fascinating realm of ancient Egypt.
Book Description
Ancient Egypt may have been, to paraphrase Herodotus, "the gift of the Nile," but Egypt's civilization was no less the product of her god incarnate, the pharaoh. These twin themes--the overwhelming importance of the annual inundation of the Nile and the rise and fall over three thousand years of the power of the divine king--provide the unifying thread running through the fourth edition of this classic text. The late Cyril Aldred was Keeper of the Department of Art and Archaeology at the Royal Museum of Scotland, and served as Associate Curator of the Department of Egyptian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Aidan Dodson, Visiting Fellow in Archaeology at the University of Bristol, has completely revised this "masterpiece of compression" (Jacquetta Hawkes), carefully preserving Aldred's succinct and lucid style. Many significant and recent finds are investigated, and new thoughts on the first unification of Egypt, her early kings, and the Third Intermediate Period are included. The dating has been revised throughout, many new photographs have been incorporated, and a complete list of kings is included for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent customer service.......2007-02-25
I received the book the following day and it was in excellent codition. I could not have asked for anything better, even if I had gone directly to a store and picked the books out myself.
great.......2001-06-01
this book has 14 chapters the loss and recovery of pagan egypt, the ancient places, the natural resources, the settlement of egypt, predynastic egypt, the archaic period the pyrimid age of the old kingdom 1 and 2, the first intermediate period, the middle kingdom, the second intermadiate period, the new kingdom, the third intermediate period, and egyptian social groups. when i bought this book i thought it would more about the people but found that it was more about the times, i was alittle upset but i found this book to be one of the best books i have yet to buy. but if you are looking for books more about people joyce tyldesley is another great writer who has books on women in generl, hatchepsut, and nefertiti. but i really do think you should buy this book its great.
Emergence of Egypt: 'Antiquity' to the ancients.......2000-09-16
This is a good bird's eye view of the emergence of Egyptian civilization as it appears almost in parallel to the rise of the Sumerian world. The earliest period of Egyptian civilization after the unification of the upper and lower kingdoms is, as Aldred suggests, the most creative, and the entire cycle of civilization stretches as long as the period in our tradition from the Classical Greeks to modern times, a tremendous range, with an amazing overall continuity. A closer look shows the change in character of the civilization and many interior transformations. This account is a fine beginning to Egyptian history. To the ancient Greeks this world was what they meant by 'ancient'
Ideal introductory book for beginners to Ancient Egypt.......2000-06-14
I recommend Aldred's "The Egyptians" more than Grimal's book "A History of Ancient Egypt," which is vague and confusing. Aldred's book is definitely a much better and more reliable introduction to all aspects of this civilization, from history to religion, geography to social ranks.
Ideal introductory book for beginners to Ancient Egypt.......2000-06-14
Well illustrated, this classic book, written by a remarkable Egyptologist, is a comprehensible overview of Egyptian civilization. The author discusses the discoveries which led to the beginning of Egyptology; he presents Egypt's geography starting with Sudan and Nubia, ending with the Delta; he describes the history and formation of Egypt from the Predynastic to the Late Periods; he describes Egyptian social groups from the pharaoh to the peasants. Extensively updated by Egyptologist Aidan Dodson, it is an excellent introduction for all students.

Book Description
Who were the ancient Egyptians? Why did they mummify their dead? Why did they bury people with their possessions? And why do mummies still fascinate us today?
The remains of seven mummies from the world-famous British Museum can answer these questions and many more. From Ginger, a simple prehistoric farmer, to Katebet, a wealthy woman buried with her jewelry, to Hornedjitef, a grand priest of Amun, the lives and culture of ancient Egyptians are uncovered in thrilling detail. Nearly a hundred color photographs detail what these people looked like, how they worked, the foods they ate, and why they prepared so elaborately for the afterlife--revealing that the life of ordinary Egyptians was different, and yet not so different, from our lives today.

Customer Reviews:
Build your own miniature pyramid - for ages 10 and up.......2007-07-25
I bought this book used on a whim, but am happy I did. In about an hour and a half, we (well, I should say mostly I) were able to create the pyramid and temple structure almost exactly as it is shown in the picture. The caveat: My daughter is six, and I thought that we could do the project together. Unfortunately, the folds and insertions require some finesse: About 10 minutes into the project, my daughter decided that she would rather do some coloring. So, I rate this as a good project for 10-12 year olds with parental help, or for teenagers by themselves.

An Idea Whose Time Has Come.......2004-10-29
Robert K. Greenleaf published his seminal essay, The Servant as Leader, in the early 1970's. Since then, leaders committed to finding a better way to serve their organizations have embraced the idea. This volume contains a rich olio of essays by writers, drawn from diverse fields, looking to bring servant leadership from theory into practice. James Autry's essay, "Love and Work" is stunning in its message and based on the fact that the messenger is a former CEO of a large publishing company. Others explore the links between servant leadership and board chairmanship, restorative justice and ethical leadership. Don't pass up Meg Wheatley's essay, "From Hero to Host."
